3. Using Extended Memory for VROOMM Object Caching
-------------------------------------------------
QUATTRO PRO can use up to 512Kb of extended memory to store additional
executable modules in memory. This feature is called the VROOMM Object
Cache. To use it, include the /X parameter when executing QUATTRO PRO:

		   Q /X

Generally, when more memory is available, QUATTRO PRO runs faster. This
feature in particular is ideal for use with computers that have a total of
1Mb memory available with no EMS (Expanded Memory Specifications) driver
installed. When working on large spreadsheets, QUATTRO PRO can use the
extended memory to significantly enhance performance. However, when more
than 1Mb of total memory is available, an EMS driver should be used because
QUATTRO PRO can use the additional memory for storing more spreadsheet data
and/or executable modules.

WARNING: Some disk cache drivers, RAM disk drivers, and TSR (Terminate
and Stay Resident) programs may also use extended memory in such a way
that QUATTRO PRO cannot recognize their presence. Therefore, we STRONGLY
RECOMMEND that you do not use any disk cache drivers, RAM disk drivers,
or TSR programs when using the /X parameter because these programs may
clash with QUATTRO PRO's use of the extended memory.

4. Notes on Spreadsheet Printing
--------------------------------
QUATTRO PRO has two basic printing modes, referred to on the /Print
Destination menu as "Draft Mode" and "Final Quality."

Draft mode printing (destinations Printer and File) is basic spreadsheet
printing that is compatible with industry standard spreadsheets. When
printing in Draft mode, fonts and shading are ignored.

Final Quality mode printing (destinations Binary File, Graphics Printer,
and Screen Preview) is new to QUATTRO PRO. In Final Quality (graphics)
mode, many new features are available, including text in various
typefaces and sizes, and graphs printed alongside spreadsheet data.
Using these new features to their best advantage requires some relearning
about how to print a spreadsheet.

Column Width

When printing to a graphics printer, QUATTRO PRO uses the font selected as
font 1 (set in the /Style | Fonts menu) to determine column width. By
default, this is 12 point Bitstream Dutch, which, when used with the
default column width and margin settings, results in 10 columns on a
typical graphics printer.

If you change font 1 to a smaller point size (with the /Style | Fonts |
Edit Fonts | Font 1 command), then QUATTRO PRO will create narrower columns
(more per page). A larger point size will result in wider columns (fewer
per page).

More precisely, a printed column is the width of <n> numeric characters
in font 1, where <n> is the number of character positions allocated on-
screen for the column. (Characters '0'-'9' are the same width in every
font.) A small amount of this space is reserved for line drawing. Note
that QUATTRO PRO never splits columns across pages. If a column doesn't
fit entirely on one page, it is moved to the page to the right.

How Many Characters per Column?

Generally speaking, a small point size will result in more characters per
column than a large point size. However, the number of characters per
column can vary because of the proportional spacing of QUATTRO PRO's fonts.
For example, in the Dutch font, the 'I' character is one-fourth the width
of the 'W' character: 12 I's fit in the space of 3 W's. Two of QUATTRO
PRO's fonts are monospaced, meaning that every character has the same width
(this is the situation on typewriters and the default fonts of most
printers): Bitstream Courier and Hershey Monospace. Rather than counting
characters, we suggest you use QUATTRO PROS's Screen Previewer to
interactively determine optimum column width.

How Many Rows per Page?

QUATTRO PRO puts as many lines on a page as will fit, given the margins you
specify. Each row is as tall as the largest font on that row. Small point
sizes result in more rows per page; large point sizes in fewer.

Margins and Spreadsheet Printing

Margin settings (in the /Print | Layout | Margins menu) are interpreted
differently for graphics printing than for text mode printing. For example,
consider the following margin values:

	Lines Per Page 66
	Left 4
	Top 2
	Right 76
	Bottom 2

The lines per page setting is ignored; QUATTRO PRO prints as many lines as
will fit. The left and right settings are treated as standard characters,
tenths of an inch. The top and bottom settings are treated as standard
lines, sixths of an inch. Therefore this printout will start 4/10 of an
inch from the printer's left-hand margin (not necessarily the left-hand
edge of the paper), and 2/6 of an inch from the top. The printout will
stop 7.6 inches from the printer's left-hand margin, and 2/6 of an inch
from the printer's bottom margin.

Escape Sequences

Text mode escape sequences (to set compressed printing and alternate fonts,
etc.) have no effect when graphics printing; use the /Style Fonts menu
instead.

Printing Inserted Graphs

Inserted graphs are sized according to the print-time width of the rows and
columns they occupy on screen.	Use a larger font as font 1 and graphs will
print larger; conversely, a smaller font 1 will result in smaller graphs.
If a graph happens to fall across a page break, part of the graph will
print on one page and the rest on the other. Use the previewer to determine
where page breaks fall.

The Graphics Quality Option

Note that the distinction between draft and final quality printing is
unrelated to the Draft and Final options under the /Options Graphics
Quality menu.  The Graphics Quality switch simply controls font building;
set to Draft, QUATTRO PRO will not build new Bitstream fonts as the
program runs.

5. Notes on Printing to a PostScript Printer
--------------------------------------------
POSTSCRIPT PRINTERS: HANDSHAKING PROBLEMS using serial I/O

When connecting a PostScript printer to a serial port, it's a good idea
to use "XON/XOFF" handshaking. Be sure your printer is set up to use
"XON/XOFF" mode handshaking. Most printer manuals describe how to do
this.

When printing complicated images, improper handshaking can cause
problems.

POSTSCRIPT PRINTERS: COLORS AND PATTERNS

We recommend that you use "Normal Mode" printing for most printing jobs
on PostScript printers. Choosing "Normal Mode" causes filled objects to
be filled with solid grays; it is much faster than "Use Patterns" mode.

In "Normal Mode," screen colors are converted to tones of gray; the gray
tone matches what you would see on a black and white television
broadcast of a screen image.

"Use Patterns" mode works well for simple images -- for example, pie
charts containing fewer than 15 slices.

You can change the current PostScript printing mode by choosing:

	/Options|Hardware|Printers.

POSTSCRIPT PRINTERS: THE QMS COLORSCRIPT 100

When printing spreadsheets to the QMS color PostScript printer, you must
specify larger than normal top and bottom margins to compensate for this
printer's larger than normal unprintable zone. A half inch at the top and
1 inch at the bottom works nicely. When printing in landscape mode, apply
the correction to the left and right margins instead.

We recommend using "Draft Mode" when printing with the ColorScript 100.
This will cause filled objects to be filled with solid colors.

"Final Quality" mode causes filled objects to be filled with black and
white pattern fills.

To save color PostScript images in EPS files, choose "Draft Mode" and
then write the EPS files using:

	/Print|Destination|Binary File for spreadsheet printing
or
	/Print|Graph Print|Destination|File for graph printing

6. Color Mapping for Plotters
-----------------------------
AUTO MODE

When outputting graphs to plotters, QUATTRO PRO maps its standard colors to
pen numbers; black through bright white corresponds to pen 1 through pen
16.

For example, on a six-pen plotter (e.g., HP's 7475), black graph
elements are drawn with pen 1, blue elements with pen 2, green with pen 3,
and so on. To reproduce a graph's screen colors, you must install the pens
in the order in which they appear in QUATTRO PRO's color selection menus;
for a six pen plotter:

	Stall # Color
	------- -----
1 Black, Brown, or Light Red
2 Blue, White, or Light Magenta
	   3 Green, Gray, or Yellow
4 Cyan, Light Blue, or Bright White
	   5 Red or Light Green
	   6 Magenta or Light Cyan

MANUAL MODE

In manual mode, QUATTRO PRO considers the plotter to have 8
virtual pens:

	Stall # Color
	------- -----
	   1 Black or Gray
	   2 Blue or Light Blue
	   3 Green or Light Green
	   4 Cyan or Light Cyan
	   5 Red or Light Red
	   6 Magenta or Light Magenta
	   7 Brown or Yellow
	   8 White or Bright White

7. Bitstream Fonts: New in QUATTRO PRO
--------------------------------------
With this version of QUATTRO PRO, type quality has been greatly enhanced
through the use of Bitstream's Fontware Typefaces and enabling software,
producing high-quality bitmap fonts. However, when you look closely at
printed output from QUATTRO PRO, you may occasionally notice extra white
space between pairs of characters. This is not a problem with your
fonts. This extra white space is commonly reduced using a composition
function called kerning. At the present time, QUATTRO PRO does not
implement kerning.

8. Testing Your Expanded Memory Specification: EMSTEST.COM
----------------------------------------------------------
Included with QUATTRO PRO is a program to test your Expanded Memory
Specification (EMS) hardware/software. The test will verify that your
EMS hardware/software is working correctly. If you have problems using
QUATTRO PRO with your EMS, run EMSTEST.COM (type EMSTEST at the DOS
prompt) and follow the instructions.

9. Notes on Sample Clip Art
---------------------------
Included with QUATTRO PRO is a PicturePak (TM) Clip Art Sampler of 35
different images, from PicturePak by Marketing Graphics Inc (MGI). The
installation program will automatically unpack the clip art images to
your QUATTRO PRO directory. To include any of these images in your
QUATTRO PRO graphs, choose / Graph|Annotate to go into the QUATTRO PRO
annotation feature. Choose / Clipboard|Paste From and pick the .CLP
file you wish to paste into your graph. There are many other images
available from MGI.

Please see the enclosed brochure for further information regarding clip
art images for QUATTRO PRO.

10. Using Mouse Drivers with EGA and VGA Graphics Cards
-------------------------------------------------------
Early versions of mouse drivers don't support screen display modes larger
than 80 columns by 24 lines. As a result, your mouse driver might not
work correctly when you use QUATTRO PRO's enhanced display modes EGA
80x43, VGA 80x50, or EGA/VGA graphics modes. The following chart will
assist you in determining if your mouse driver will work correctly with
the enhanced display modes.

Mouse Version that supports EGA 80x43 and VGA 80x50
      ----- ---------------------------------------------
      Microsoft 6.0 or higher
      Mouse Systems 6.01 or higher
      Logitech 4.0 or higher
      PC Mouse 6.01 or higher

11. Corrections to the Manual
-----------------------------
Translating files, p. 233. Table 8.2, Files Quattro Can Translate
indicates that Quattro can directly translate .DIF (VisiCalc) and .SLK
(Multiplan) files. This is incorrect.
