                           1. Introduction

STENCH is a multimedia presentation: it's purpose is to give the viewer
something to think about, in terms of God, and our need for a personal
  relationship with Jesus.

In 1997, The Saviour Project - the predecessor to this disk, was handed
out to 400 students in London, and gave a graphic and powerful visual
account of the life of Jesus, His life and death, and their relevance
  to us today.

Like the Saviour Project, Stench is set out to a song, and the focus of
this particular project is that sin makes us unacceptable to God - it is
like a stench to him, and we cannot hide from the fact that we are in
need of God's grace and forgiveness, which Jesus paid for on the cross.

                           2. System Requirements

          * The minimum requirements are a 386 computer with about 500k
            of free RAM.

+ The recommended requirements are a 486 DX 33 or above, and
a sound card is strongly recommended, although Stench will
            run without.

! Stench runs happily under Dos 5+, Win 3, Win 95, and Win 98.
HOWEVER, if you are using a Windows, you should disable
your screen saver, or change the time taken for it to become
active to 5 minutes, to be safe.

(Note that this is still a big improvement from Saviour!)

                           3. Installation

You have already unzipped stench10.zip, as you are reading this!

Before you run the Stench presentation, you should run the Sound Card
Configuration program, to set up Stench to play the music. You will
need to know what kind of 'Soundblaster' compatable sound card you
have, the address, the interrupt no., and the DMA channel. To find
  this, either:

  1. In Windows 95, look at Settings, Control Panel, Device Manager,
System, then select Sound and video drivers, and double click on your
sound card. Click on the Resources tab, to find the address, interrupt
and DMA channel. Most sound card will be compatible with the Soundblaster
  or the Soundblaster Pro setting.

  2. Alternatively, at a DOS prompt, type 'SET' and look for a line saying
'SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1'. This is a common example of the line, and here,
the address is 220, the interrupt is 5, and the DMA channel is 1.

You will also be asked what mixing frequency to use - select the highest
option available, for the highest quality!

You are then ready to run Stench. There is already a known problem with
Stench - that on fast machines, things go rather quicker than they
should. This will be solved once and for all in a future version, but
for now, try using this commandline to run Stench:

If you have a 486, below 66 MHz, type STENCH
If you have a faster machine, type STENCH /CPG

(CPG being the owner of the first speedy computer I tested Stench on!)

                           4. Troubleshooting

  SOUND CRASHES?

Some soundcards claim to be DOS compatible, but do not work with Stench.
They tend to just make a bad noise, and then perform an Illegal Operation.
One of these is the Ensoniq AudioPCI, which I haven't been able to make
work with Stench. Unfortunately, there is no solution to this as yet -
running SETUP and selecting No Sound will enable you to view Stench in
a rather dull way. Sorry! It would help me greatly if you mail me with
the details of your soundcard, if you can't get any sound working, and
I'll try and get round the problem for future projects.

                           5. Project History

The idea for Stench came early in 1998. The music was written in June,
just after exams finished! Then all through July, August and September,
right up to the early hours of October 6th, the code and graphics were all
slowly but surely added. Stench was distributed on the afternoon of
October 6th, by the four Christian societies at Imperial College. 200 copies
were made, copying disks through the night... The main project was supplied
with two games as well; one of them was also called Stench - a hi-tec re-
write of the Atari classic Pong, for two players, featuring hockey, squash,
tennis and football... and the other was the absolutely wonderful SwordFish;
where two players shoot lilipads floating down a river, using a bow and
swordfish! These two games, especially Swordfish, have made Stench a hit
already, with many people becoming addicted...!! These games are not
included here, but may some day appear - check the website in the contact
section from time to time.

This version is the first edition of Stench - no problems have been
revealed yet, (other than the speed problem, and the occasional sound card
compatibility problem) although if some do materialise, or solutions to the
above two are found, then new versions may be released.

                            6. Freeware

This software is totally free. Please feel free to distribute it widely,
provided that all the files are included, unchanged, for no cost. The one
exception is that you may add local contact information in the CONTACT,
section, if you would like people to be able to contact you, having viewed
Stench.

Here is the copyright information for Stench.... it's very interesting.

     - The music, words, and coding is copyright, the author.
     - The MOD player used is the DSIK SOUND SYSTEM, which you can
download from most major ftp sites, or at www.egerter.com.
     - The pictures... the movie was used with kind permission of
Christian Student Action, (also known as Agap). The copyright
       is owned by Agape.
     - All other pictures used are from freeware sources, and clipart
       archives on the net.

Even more people were of immense help and encouragement when programming
Stench this year, than there were when programming Saviour Project last
year! Amongst those are Rich, who programmed Swordfish single-handedly,
and helped out with some graphics, and inspiration! And he also stayed up
through the night copying disks for the Freshers Fair! Sam helped lots by
by making cups of tea, and letting me program part of the timing code on a
nice fast pentium... Chris was great in giving ideas, and forcing me to
think about what I was doing! Dave and Mark also gave valuable opinions in
the early stages of the project. Frans and Deb gave as much input as ever,
as my campus pastors, and were as ever, extremely encouraging and wise!
Sarah was as always, a great musical encouragement, picking out the good
bits of 'the first hash' of the music back in June. My Mum was also great,
(despite the terrifying nature of hi-tec, confusing and generally horrible
computers!!) in giving an objective and critical viewpoint! Lots of people
tested lots of code, including most the people above, and also Joy, Sam,
Matt and Tim.

And finally, I could never have stuck with a project this big, taking this
long, without the passion, excitement and determination that my creator
equipped me with. Through the hard struggles of life, and the great times
as well, You truly are my Saviour, and my first love.

The project is now complete. Wherever you are in your walk with God, I
hope this project inspires you, and brings you closer to Him.
