System Requirements
-------------------
Windows95/98/ME/NT4/2000/XP.
5 MB diskspace + room for database and images
32 MB memory
Pentium 100 MHz
Graphic resolution of at least 800x600 and 65535 colours
is recommended. Will work on 640x480, but 256 colours will
not work well.

Installation
------------
Install by clicking the file setup.exe in this archive.
The installation procedure will be automatic, but you
can choose where to place the program files. By default
all files will be placed in \program files\PhotoArchiver.

Uninstall
---------
This program can be completly uninstalled from the
Control Panel as long as you don't put any new files
into the program directory.

Just another image organizer?
-------------------------------------
The idea behind this program is different from most
image cataloging programs. Instead of browsing directories
of imagefiles, you import a reference to the files into a
database. You can then forget all about where the files are
located. Enter a description for each picture describing
where and when the picture was taken, and a general description.
This can be done very fast; either by using the text
entered for one picture as default for the next or by
specifying a range of pictures to update. All words in
the description are searchable. Each picture may also be
assigned to one or many categories (or albums).
You may choose to search within one or all categories or you
may display all pictures in a certain category.

This makes a very powerful system for locating a certain
picture. Some time ago, I needed to locate a picture of
a Portugese Man of War that I took some years ago.
I didn't remember which year it was taken so locating
the picture by browsing directories would have taken time
(I have several thousands pictues on my hard disc sorted by year).
I just entered 'Portugese +man' in the searchfield and
the picture was located (and displayed) in less than one second.

Getting started
---------------

HISTORY FOR BR'S PHOTOARCHIVER
-------------------------------

Changes in version 4.0.5 (12-Jan-2003)
-----------------------------------------
- IMPROVEMENT: A checkbox for setting default categories has been added to the
category page of the annotation form.

- BUGFIX: The bottom horizontal scrollbar of the Navigator Window did sometimes
disappear below the edge of the window.

- BUGFIX: Thumbnails would display very slow if you were running a CD created with
  BR's PhotoArchiver on WindowsXP.

- BUGFIX: It was impossible to enter the letter 'z' in the search field.

- BUGFIX: Volume name information would sometimes get lost when adding photos from a CD.
This caused an error when trying to display a photo from this CD.

- BUGFIX: Viewing the photos of an offline volume in the Navigator View did not work
if the volume name contained spaces.

Changes in version 4.0.4 (08-Dec-2003)
-----------------------------------------
- IMPROVEMENT: You can now change the name of the pre-defined data fields.

- BUGFIX: Contact sheets would claim the image does not exist if printing large number
  of images (>500).

- BUGFIX: It was possible to import files stored at root level on a network drive more than once.

- BUGFIX: If you choose to print file names with the contact sheets, the same file name would
  be printed with all pictures.

- BUGFIX: It was passoble to add photos already added photos from a CD if you left the file
  category empty.

- BUGFIX: An error in the Create CD routine caused an missing DLL error when trying to display
  the pictures on that CD.

Changes in version 4.0.3 (10-Nov-2003)
-----------------------------------------

- NEW: Support for CRW, NEF, and X3F file formats added. Will support RAW formats for
most Nikon, Canon and Sigma SD9. This implementation does not support CRW for Canon cameras that
store lossless JPEG compressed CRWs (EOS-1Ds, EOS-1D and EOS-D2000).
DISCLAIMER: This is a test and we do not guarantee this will work without problems.

- BUGFIX: Images where the name had certain combinations of upper/lowercase letters would
not show up as already imported in the add photos screen.

- IMPROVEMENT: Kodak PictureCD and some older CDs made by Wal-Mart had the same volumename which
confused PhotoArchiver to believe the files had already been imported. This has now been changed
so PhotoArchiver can see them as different CDs.

- BUGFIX: Selecting Refresh Thumbnails from the right-click menu if the photos where stored on a
CD that was not inserted would cause the thumbnails to be lost. The refresh will now be skipped
for photos that are not available online.

- BUGFIX: The filenames of data imported from a version 3.5 exp file were not converted
correctly so it was possible to add the same files twice to the same Photo Index.

- BUGFIX: Filename and volume name were not exported to CSV file.

- BUGFIX: Full screen display was only displayed on the top half of the displays on dual monitor
  systems.

- IMPROVEMENT: The 19 characters limit for categories has been removed.

Changes in version 4.0.2 (27-Oct-2003)
----------------------------------------------
- BUGFIX: Bulk Update would crash when used on User Defined Fields createded in 4.0.

- BUGFIX: The Display on Screen checkbox did not work for User Defined Fields.

- BUGFIX: A File Category was not automtically set when importing exp-files created
  with version 3.5.

- BUGFIX: Some problems relating to switching between multiple Photo Indexes have been fixed.

- BUGFIX: Full screen display should now work on Dual Monitor systems. There are still some
issues with placement of message boxes.

- IMPROVEMENT: You can now activate full screen mode by double-clicking on the right hand image.

- IMPROVEMENT: Save button is now the default button for the annotation screen.

- IMPROVEMENT: Description field in Anntotation Screen now has a scrollbar.

Changes in version 4.0.1 (22-Oct-2003)
----------------------------------------------
- BUGFIX: If the last record accessed before a Rebuild of the Photo Index had a 'keyword'
longer than 25 characters, the rebuild would hang and PhotoArchiver must be stopped with
alt-ctrl-del. Any attempts to restart the program would also cause hangs. Running a Reorganize
Photo Index with this version fixes the problem.

- BUGFIX: A problem reading the EXIF information for some Pentax cameras has been fixed.

- IMPROVEMENT: New items are now dynamically added to the Navigator Window without having to
close/open a branch of the tree.

- BUGFIX: Categories were not copied to the CD when using the Create CD command.

- BUGFIX: The field labels for User Defined Fields were not updated in the Annotation Form
when you selected another Photo Index and the two indexes had different User Defined Fields.

Changes in version 4.0.0 (10-Oct-2003)
----------------------------------------------

- NEW: A Navigator Window have been added. This lets you browse through your
  categories, events, places, and folders.

- NEW: Full screen viewing. Double-click on a thumbnail to see full size picture.
Can be displayed scaled to display or actual size. Panning possile when actual size and
photo is larger than display size. Go to next photo by arrow keys or mouse wheel. ESC or
  right-click returns to thumbnail view.

- NEW: Simple slideshow. The photos are shown full size. You can pause the slideshow
  by pressing p. ESC terminates.

- NEW: You can attach multiple files to a photo. I.e. you can have several versions
of the picture under the same description. Also non-image files can be attached. They
will be displayed using the default program for this file type.

- NEW: Hierarchical categories. You can now define categories in multiple levels.
Ten levels are possible, but I assume more than three or four is not practical.

- NEW: Function to look for and automatically attach files with the same file name.
  File type may be different.

- NEW: When you edit a photo using your image editor, you have the option to ask
PhotoArchiver to make a new file so the changes do not overwrite the original. The new
file will automatically be attached to the original description.

- NEW: You can now edit the description text for a removable media (CD).

- IMPROVEMENT: Improved annotation form. This new form is free floating so you can place
anywhere you want. You can still use the controls in the main PhotoArchiver window while
the Annotation form is open. It's also resizable and will remember it's last position and
size when you close it. User defined fields now appear as any other field and can be navigated
  the tab-key.

- IMPROVEMENT: The program will now give a warning if you change the name of an image file
and the new file does not exist.

- IMPROVEMENT: Directory selector now uses system icons when running on Win9x/ME/NT. Win2000/XP
  already did this.

- IMPROVEMENT: Also the ID will be highlighted when you select a thumbnail. It could
be hard to see the highlighting if you had square pictures.

- IMPROVEMENT: It's now possible to select which data should be displayed in the textbox under
  the large picture.

- IMPROVEMENT: You can now select which text to display on the Album page when you
  create web-pages.

- BUGFIX: Folder Selector for Win9X/ME/NT didn't allways expand the folder when you
first clicked on the expand 'button'.

- IMPROVEMENT: You can now view hints at any time by selecting Help->Hints.

- IMPROVEMENT: On-line help is updated to reflect changes in version 4.0.

- IMPROVEMENT: A progress bar will now be displayed while you delete pictures.

- IMPROVEMENT: You can now refresh a range of thumbnails by first selecting the thumbnails
and then select Refresh Thumbnails from the right-click menu.

- IMPROVEMENT: You can now use KPAD+ and KPAD- to zoom in and out in the fullscreen view.

- IMPROVEMENT: You can now disable the fields you don't want to use. You can also choose which
data items should be displayed on the screen, on web pages, or when you create a CD. Disabled
fields will not appear on the Annotation Form.

- IMPROVEMENT: The Bulk Update Form can now optionally reset the TO_BE_DESCRIBED flag.

- IMPROVEMENT: The resize bar of the thumbnail window will now snap to the thumbnail size.

- IMPROVEMENT: Full PhotoArchiver will now be installed on the CD when you create a CD.
This means that you have the same functionallity on the CD (minus editing) as you have
  on your full PhotoArchiver installation.

- IMPROVEMENT: If you use more than one Photo Index, PhotoArchiver will keep the other
indexes in a most recently used list on the File menu. This makes it easier to switch
  between indexes.

KNOWN BUGS IN BR's PhotoArchiver 4.0
-------------------------------------

- the zoom keys in print preview do not work. The screen will turn white and you have to
close the preview and select preview again to see the pictures.

- some alignment issues when running on dual monitors.
