Overview

SysViewer is a tool for users of Microsoft Windows95/98 which provides you with a single environment from which to view and edit your important system files. It's designed as a replacement for a similar tool that ships with the Windows operating system, introducing enhancements such as the capability to back up your files.

2. Installing SysViewer

1. Close all open programs.

2. Extract the contents of the Sysview.zip file to an empty folder (make one if you have to, by right-clicking and selecting New, Folder, from the context menu. The name is unimportant, so long as it's empty)

3. Click Start, Run, and click the Browse button. Navigate to the folder where you extracted SysViewer.zip, and double-click Setup.exe. This will launch the InstallShield setup.

4. The default installation path is C:\Program Files\SysViewer. If you wish to change this, follow the directions provided during Setup. If you select a folder that doesn't exist, Setup will create it. You'll also be asked where you would like SysViewer's Start Menu shortcuts to be placed; the default is \Programs\SysViewer.

5. Like many applications, SysViewer requires the Microsoft Foundation Classes shared library (version 4.2), also known as MFC42.DLL, to be present in your Windows\System folder. The latest version of this file is included with Setup, and will be installed if it is not already present, or if you have an out-of-date version. However, if Setup detects a NEWER version (planning ahead) on your system, it will NOT overwrite it.

6. When installation is complete, you should reboot. This is not necessary for SysViewer itself, but if your MFC42.DLL has been updated (or installed new) then the system might need to be restarted before the file can be registered properly.

NOTE to Microsoft Windows98 users: If your copy of MFC42.DLL has been updated or added by Setup, then at some point you may wish to run the System File Checker, so that you can update the version information to reflect the newer file.

3. Uninstalling SysViewer

To Uninstall SysViewer, go to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs. Select SysViewer, and press the Add/Remove button (or just double-click the entry for SysViewer). InstallShield Uninstaller will launch, and ask you to confirm the uninstallation. Choose "Yes" at the prompt.

NOTE: MFC42.DLL is NOT uninstalled. This is a shared library provided by Microsoft, and is used by a large number of applications. In other words, you most likely have other applications which require the library's presence, and removing it would prevent them from functioning.

4. Contact Information

SysViewer is pretty much a no-brainer. That, plus (let's be honest) the fact that I'm not making any money from it, means that I cannot guarantee support for this product. However; time permitting, I will try to answer any questions you might have. I also welcome comments, suggestions and other feedback.
