     From: JAYSTEIN To: MISAL

Hi Mike,

I had a message all prepared and find that you answered most of the question
that I had. I felt sort of dumb today too. I went out and bought the 256K RAM
chips today and replaced what I thought would be the bad chip. I was a little
confused about where the program was saying the bad chip was located, but
finally thought I had figured it out. I ran the program and still got the same
error. Impatient, I just replace the entire bank of chips (I bought enough to
have extras on hand) and darn if I didn't still get the same results. I must
have sat frustrated for about 30 minutes. Then it came to me. In the start up
of the program it asks for RAM size and not thinking twice I put down 256(k).
When the test found the error it printed "This address is in the 3rd 256K bank
of base Ram (1st 1024K bank)....." I'd noticed the 1024k Bank, but it didn't
register on me what the printout was showing. Finally though I realize
something was wrong here. Then I remembered that when I bought this computer it
came with 128K of RAM. No way that was in 256K chips. Sure enough I reran the
program leaving the RAM size questioned unanswered and I got back the printout

"...This address is in the 10th 64K bank of base RAM (3rd 256 bank)..."

I figured that must mean the bad the chip was in the 64k RAMs located, of all
places, under the drive cage (Just where one would expect the chips most likely
to fail would be located - real smart design!) The message was still not real
clear so I was going to ask you or Reggie if you knew where the bad chip was
located, but you saved me the trouble. I've down loaded the program and will
give it a try tomorrow after I pick up some 64K chips.

Strangely enough, in looking for the 64K chips I noticed that the mysterious
socket is not as big as I thought, but only about 3/4ths as long as a 8088, and
I figured it couldn't be for a 8087. I was going to ask Reggie if he had any
other ideas, but you answered that question too though! (You might read the
next message too that I've left for Reggie as maybe you'll have an answer if
Reggie doesn't.)

I'll let you know how it all works out! THANKS --- JAY

Reggie,

I hate to be bugging you with so many questions, but would you know whether it
would be advisable to place a piece of cardboard between two boards so that they
don't make contact? I hate having to spend more money for a serial port (i.e. -
a new memory board such as a Zuckerboard) and then an external modem. The modem
and the memory board take up a tad bit too much room and the modem will end up
touching, just slightly, the board adjacent to it.

I'd love to get a hold of an old Mathews Electronics Expansion Chassis and
connecting boards. The high price kept away for a long time (and many others
too I'm sure), but finally some outlet that advertized in PCM had apparently
made a deal with Mathews and was offering the chassis for quite a bit less (And
I was getting desperate by then too!), but when I contacted them, they told they
had been unable to get the chassis from Mathews. A call to Mathews (fall of
'88) resulted in learning the firm was out of business. Their phone would only
allow talking for about 20 seconds before it would automatically cut off. So I
really couldn't learn much. I sent a SSAE but never got a response. I called
up about 35 firms that had ads in "Computer Shopper" but none carried expansion
chassis. You'd think with all the new types of boards coming out (Scanners,
EMS, etc.) that there would be a lot of Tandy 1000 uses not to mention original
IBM PC users in need of more slots. Not at six or seven hundred bucks though.
One can get a half way descent clone for not too much more than that price.

Jay, before you invest any more money, I'd take the 286 card with your
computer to the Radio Shack and let them crank it up. You might just have
a bad 286 card. Those 64K chips are for Video. I think there are 4 of them.
That empty socket is most likely a remnant of your old BIOS which consisted
of 2 chips.

When you go to the Radio Shack, look on there shelves for the service manual
for your machine. Sometimes there might be an open package. Look at the
system board diagram, which should also be in your 1000 manual. It will
tell you what chips go where.

Reggie,

Are you sure that RAMTEST works with the original 1000? Using my logic probe I
couldn't find a bad RAM - not that I'm any computer expert in the first place.
Just to be sure I replaced all 16 of the 64K chips and I still got the same
results. I switched out all of the 256K chips with extras I had and still the
same result. Is there some mysterious RAM that I'm not aware of on the 1000?
The RAM I know of are the two rows of eight of 64K chips under the drive cage
and then in addition I've got two rows of eight of 256K chips on the memory
board.

I tried the program, Perror.TXT, that Mike recommended as maybe being able to
help me identify exactly which chip was bad, but I couldn't make sense out of it
when I compared the printout from RAMTEST to what was shown in PERROR.TXT. (The
latter of course was obviously for the IBM PC.)

I was wondering if the fact that Tandy using part of the RAM for video is
confusing RAMTEST. It seems odd to me that I have had no other apparent
symptoms. I wasn't even aware of a problem before trying to install the speed
up board AND I'm still unaware of any problem with the speed up board not
installed.

I've tried getting a Tech manual, but have not yet had success. I must admit,
I'm about ready to take your advice though from last night and take the computer
in to Radio Shack. I sure don't like that thought though, but the problem is
apparently beyond my limited abilities. Thanks all the same.

I have taken pieces of plastic to seperate expansion boards in my T1000, Jay.
That is, when they were "just" touching. You do not want to "bend" a board near
the motherboard expansion socket, however. If you use a plastic, you can cut it
to the configuation that is needed to seperate. You can also _secure_ it.
Ordinary machine vibration (from the fan and drives) may let the seperator move.
As gravity is usually the co-culprit, be sure to make provisions that it will
not "vibrate-down" out of position.

Use as little of the seperation material as possible, so as not to impede air-
flow (cooling).

There was a vendor for the external T1000 expansion chassis, here in the Tandy
SIG. In fact, he has left messages with his companies address. Try doing a DIR
SUBJ EXPANSION /SINCE=JAN-1989. This will give you all messages about the key
EXPANSION.

  Bill,

There is a bit of a "tortoise and hare" analogy . . .

. . . between Xmodem and Ymodem. You see, Ymodem sends in much
larger blocks and if you are on a clean line that means extra speed, BUT if
you are running through a packet switcher and noisy lines, you may well be
  better off with Xmodem.

You see if there is noise on the line, or some other disruption, and the block
has to be resent, with Ymodem you have to resend a much larger block, whereas
resending an Xmodem block is much easier. Thus, if the error-correcting
protocol is actually having to resend many blocks you are better off to be
using Xmodem's smaller blocks (on the theory that many of the small ones will
"make it through" without needing to be resent).

Since Ymodem uses 1,024-byte blocks, if one of them takes a "hit" (noise, or
whatever) the entire 1,024 bytes must be sent again (and possibly more than
once). But, Xmodem divides the transfer into much smaller 128-byte blocks and,
thus, if the same "hit" took place, several of the smaller blocks may have
made it through unscathed and only 128 bytes need be resent.

If you use a good terminal emulation program, such as ProComm, the transfer
screen will show you how many blocks are being resent, so you can decide which
protocol you might be wisest to use.

Personally, if I am using Delphi in prime time (I use Telenet) I almost always
use Xmodem. And, if I am noticing any line noise, I also choose Xmodem. Only
in the wee hours of the morning do I bother with Ymodem.

Just tell your store I have the file . . .

. . . and many others do, too, and that you now have a VGA monitor
and need that DMVGA.RES file. It is not provided with the TL and SL when you
get that DeskMate package that comes with it, but that file IS on the
standalone version of DeskMate. Tell the store personnel to look on Diskette 1
of the PC Compatible version and they'll see all the video drivers that do not
come with the TL and SL.

A reasonable Radio Shack employee ought to let you have a copy of that one
file. I mean, what good would it do you except to use with DeskMate. I use VGA
with DeskMate all the time, but I did not get that file with the machine when
  I bought it.

     New Tandy announcements
     From: NICKOLS To: ALL

Some pretty interesting new developments from Tandy are mentioned in this week's
Infoworld.

First, a version of Lotus 1-2-3 is being released making use of the Tandy
Deskmate graphical interface. Called the Lotus Spreadsheet for Deskmate, it is
described as a version of 1-2-3 Release 2.01 minus several features (no macros,
no expanded memory support, and no add-in facility, so existing 1-2-3 add-ins
will not work).

Another major software announcement using the Deskmate interface is Symantec's
Q&A Write, a word processor that includes a card file, page preview and undo
feature. Surprisingly, it is reported that Q&A Write will be put in the ROMs of
new 1000 SLs and 1000 TLs, presumably replacing the current Deskmate word
processor.

In the just-released 1990 Tandy product catalog are two new 80386 desktops, the
4025 LX and 4020 LX, both running at 25 MHz. and featuring VGA on the
motherboard and an Intel 82385 memory cache controller. The 1400 laptop is now
available with a 20-megabyte hard drive built in for $2,499. Both it and the
standard dual 3-1/2-inch floppy drive models have been redesigned to improve
slow hard disk booting and battery-drain problems.

To be announced later this fall, according to the Infoworld report, are a slim
DOS laptop, a 33-MHz 80386 desktop, and a model of the Tandy 1000 using the
Intel 80386SX central processor.

Bob, how are power supplies like viruses? Everybody worries about them, but very
few have ever had a problem with them.

In the newer machines, you can presume that the manufacturers have pretty much
allowed for whatever users will put in all those slots. Newer PCs have hardier
power supplies, and newer add-ons consume less power. Don't worry about
something until you really detect a problem. Life has enough real problems
without creating more for yourself.

Don't worry, be happy. Right? :-)

Here's the info on setting the graphics modes on the 1000's thru INT 10h:
It's straight out of the Tech. Ref. Manual

AH = 11 BH = 0 Set background color (0-15) to color value in BL.
      BL = color value (0 = black / 1 = blue / 2 = green / 3 = cyan /
      4 = red / 5 = magenta / 6 = yellow / 7 = gray / 8 = dark gray /
      9 = light blue / 10 = light green / 11 = light cyan / 12 = light
      red / 13 = light magenta / 14 = light yellow / 15 = white)

      or

BH = 1 Set default palette to the number (0 or 1) in BL.

      In black and white modes:

           BL = 0: 1 for white
           BL = 1: 1 for black

In 4 color graphics modes: (This is the one your interested in)

           BL = 0 (1 = green / 2 = red / 3 = yellow)
           BL = 1 (1 = cyan / 2 = magenta / 3 = white)

In 16 color graphics modes: (This one also you want to know)

           (1 = blue / 2 = green / 3= cyan / 4 = red / 5 = magenta /
           6 = yellow / 7 = light gray / 8 = dark gray / 9 = light blue /
           10 = light green / 11 = light cyan / 12 = light red / 13 = light
magenta / 14 = yellow (must be a misprint and really mean light
           yellow) / 15 = white)

Also included is this Note:

For alpha modes palette entry 0 indicates the border. For graphics mode
(important for what your looking to do) palette entry 0 indicates the
      border and the background color.

I believe this is the information you want.

Hi Ray. IBM DOS 3.3 should run just fine on your Tandy 1000 HX. Tandy's version
of the DOS likely does have some utilities that would be specific to your
machine, and so work a little better perhaps. But if it works, it works. No
software you run is going to hurt your machine.

What you should keep in mind is the gray area of legality. Your friend likely
does not have the legal right to hand down his previous version of DOS to you,
and you likely do not have the legal right to use it. By all rights, you should
contact Tandy about upgrading the DOS that came with your machine to Tandy's
version of 3.3--which I believe is available.

Now, having said that, enjoy IBM's DOS 3.3.

IBM DOS 3.3 will not hurt your computer. The computer is not a very intelligent

The external serial port on the Tandy 1000 TX is always COM1. Therefore
the serial mouse will always use COM1. The internal modem must use COM2.

Thanks for the post, Willbill, I just got my pc version from Paul's board for an
evaluation. I'm a registered GT1403 user and I wanted to see what changes had
been made in the new version. The biggest change I've seen so far is better
support for external protocols. I almost hate to admit it, but I never got
Zmodem working correctly with 1403. It was a perfect download first time with
GT1500. Heck, that's worth the upgrade price by itself. I'm glad to know Paul
is still continuing the fossil version for the T2K. Now that I've replaced old
HAL, (it's my backup actually) I find the old boy is still supported. T2K users
ought to support this product if they want to see such work continued. J im

I was told by my Radio Shack dealer when I bought my 1000 TL that it had an EGA
640x200x16 color mode that software mfg's would soon be writing software to be
compatible with it. Well, I know that my machine has this mode, but I havn't
seen ant software that includes the compatibility with this new graphics mode,
nor the new sound capabilities, either. (I know Deskmate uses them both). If
anyone knows of any other comercial software that yet supports these two
features, please let me know...thanks. JBL85.

I don't have an answer but presume that some 3rd party vendors will come up with
something if the 1400 is popular enough. (It's what I have also). I am
particularly interested in a MIDI interface which would fit that slot since I
can't seem to find one wh ich operates on the serial port. (This was one of
several reasons for buying a computer in the first place). By the way...It's
nice to hear from another 1400 owner! There aren't too many of us in this SIG!

     Windows on Tandy 1000TL
     From: JIMREED To: ALL

Well, FINALLY, I now have . . .

. . . Windows 2.11 running on my Tandy 1000TL. It has been a battle, as you
know. It's one I have been waging for two month!

After upgrading from 2.03 to 2.10 and now to 2.11, the latest, as far as I know,
I still could not get it to get past the blue title screen. It would just lock
up there, regardless of whether I ran in VGA, CGA, or even monochrome.
Initially, I blamed the VGA board and then the hand scanner and removed both
boards without improvement. I reduced files and buffers to bare minimums, got
rid of TSR's, ran SETUPTL/A about 40 times. Three phone calls to Fort Worth
yielded little in the way of help.

Recently, I sent a note to Tandy's computer support service. This yielded the
advice to upgrade from 640K to 768K. The only explanation was:

RESPONSE: This has been duplicated by us and the solution that we have come up
with is to upgrade your memory to 768k. To do this you will need to install the
128k Memory Chip Kit (catalog number 25-1078).

THANK YOU,

RADIO SHACK COMPUTER SUPPORT SERVICE SV/cd

That put me in a spin, as I saw no need for the extra 128K, since I have a VGA
card with on-board memory, and, therefore have 610K free before running Windows
(which needs 512K) that seems like enough.

However, adding the extra 128K did the trick, and I use the term "trick"
purposely as I do not think Windows actually uses any of that extra memory, but,
rather, the very presence of that extra memory makes Windows look elsewhere for
video memory -- or something like that. So, in my nontechnical perspective, the
extra 128K acts more like a doorstop, telling the system to "use the other
door." How's that for a technical explanation, huh!

Several people have offered advice as to why that might work, and, I am grateful
for all the sympathy and advice. I really do not know who is on target, as far
as explaining the need for the extra memory, but adding the 128K did get Windows
running. Unfortunately, spending money always seems to be the most promising, if
not palatable, option.

It is great to be able to get on Delphi and obtain expert assistance for such
exasperating problems, though. A comment by Marty Goodman, for instance, let me
postpone the expense of the chips for a while and still get the problem solved.
He mentioned that the memory chips I needed, if I wanted to cave in and do the
memory upgrade, were the same as those used in the CoCo 3. So, having three
Color Computers, I decided to rob one of them of its memory chips and install
them in the 1000. It worked easily. Yes, I still have to replace them in the
CoCo 3, but as I seldom use it, and have two other CoCo's anyway, I can now shop
for good prices on the chips -- likely from Marty and his world-famous "swap
meet" finds.

So, Windows is now working fine, though I still believe that there must be a way
to make it work on the TL without adding the memory. Now, my biggest problem
will be getting Kevin Nickols to let loose of the mouse I lent to him a few days
ago!

Again, I am grateful for the empathy, sympathy and advice.

If you use an internal modem in a bus slot without configuring it for COM2, it
will "allocate" COM1 for itself. This will leave you with the external serial
port, useless - unless you configure "it" as COM2.

Now, if you place the mouse card and modem card in the bus expansion slots,
without configuring either - they will BOTH fight for COM1.

The only way to shut off the tone is to reset or run a program that resets the

It is definately constant ... the programs continue to work ... I can switch to

sound chip but its faster just to save what I'm working on and then reset.
