      HELP! HELP! HELP!

I was handed a copy of CALIFORNIA GAMES by my niece. She had this awful
look on her face. Yes, that's right, the disk was corrupted in some way. I
cauldn't even get a directory at first. After using the Norton Utilities Disk
Doctor on it, I was able to get a directory. Norton also found 8 lost chains
and gave them temporary names. Well I got the program running again by
plugging the names of files that error messages gave me and substituting them
for the temp. names. Needless to say, this is a lot of trial and error.
I have most of the program working, but not all. I really need the
directory from the factory original copy. PLEASE! is there someone out there
who has this stupid game and can send me a copy of the directory so I can
attempt to finish the job? I think that it may be impossible to completly fix
it, but I have to give it my best shot.

                         Thanks,
                         >Chucky

P.S. This would be the MS-Dos version.

     A peek at Tandy's Thesaurus
     From: JIMREED To: ALL

I have just taken a look . . .

. . . at a copy of "Thesaurus," part of Tandy's DeskMate Companion series.
It is so easy to use -- assuming you already know how to use DeskMate 3.0.

All I had to do to install it was to remove the file DMTHES.RES from my
floppy, so that the system would look for the the identically named replacement
file on the Thesaurus diskette.

If you have a hard disk, you just get into the DeskMate directory, then put
the floppy into a drive and use COPY *.* to copy the three files onto your hard
disk.

Using it is easy. You just place the cursor on the word you wish to research,
hit F3 and highlight THESAURUS (or just hit the "T" key). You can put the cursor
anywhere within the word, as long as it touches the word. A window then pops up
with a selection of synonyms for that word.

Furthermore, by using the LOOKUP key in the pop-up window, you can also find
synonyms for any of the alternatives, too! You can then pick a word and press
the OK button, or CANCEL. If you hit OK, then the word that you have selected
replaces the original word.

The only awkwardness I encountered was that I decided to seek an alternative
to "unfortunately" and, from the selections, I picked "unhappy," since
"unhappily" was not offered. So, I had to add the LY, once back in the Text
application.

Taking two extra keystrokes to add the LY was no big deal, of course, but it
did surprise me since Thesaurus boasts "220,000 synonyms" -- and DeskMate's
dictionary claims just 80,000 (as best I recall).

Most words in my own text I was using to try out Thesaurus were accepted, but
I did try "wildcats" and a No Matches message with a display of similarly
spelled words, suggesting I try one of them. This disappointed me, since
"wildcats" is hardly an esoteric word.

By the way, it did have selections for some, but not all off-color words.

Overall, I thought it was neat and liked the way I could hit F3 and T and
there was the pop-up window. It does make things simple to fashion it so that
DeskMate users know how to use it as soon as they open the package.

The documentation, though sort of stretched out to eight pages, could all have
been written on one single page. THAT, I like.

I am not sure what your present memory configuration is, Scott. The older Tandy
1000 has 128K on the motherboard and has no switches to set for any extra
memory. This is taken care of on the memory expansion boards.

It would seem logical that you wish to add two rows of 256K chips to your
expansion board. In doing so, you must set certain jumpers on the memory
expansion board. This tells the DMA (Direct Memory Access) what to look for.
Your expansion manual should contain this information.

Once you have the expansion board configured, the T1000 will accept it without
any changes to its motherboard.

Let me know if you are using a combination of 64K and 256K chips, and how many
"memory banks" your expansion board allows. supplement.

then it hung up, rebooting just went through the same process. I'm using chips
that were advertised for a Tandy 1000SX. Right next to the E1-E2 jumper there
is a E3-E4 pins, and the guy at Radio Shack said to try the jumper at all
positions to try to get it to work. So far it hasn't worked.

I have a Tandy 1000SX with (2) 51/4 drives, a 30 Meg Hard Drive, Copy II PC
Board, Practical Peripherals Internal 2400 Modem, and the 286 Express Board. I
went to Radio Shack to get a mouse, and was given the Logitech C-7 Serial Mouse.
They installed a serial board and after a day of effort gave up on making the
mouse work. Calls to Logitech showed the mouse to be ok, so Radio Shack] said
that the problem was from the 286 Express board. I talked to another Radio Shack
and they said that the problem could be fixed and that they would rather put in
the Radio Shack mouse. Again, no go. A note to Tandy on PC-Link came back with a
need for a serial adapter, a PLUS card, a serial board, and a mouse set for
COM2. Sounded EXPENSIVE and complicated. I went to a place here and explained
the situation. They had a Logitech C-7 BUS mouse in stock. Installed in a matter
of min. and it works like a charm. Purchased bundled with Logitech Publisher
(Looks like PFS: First Publisher). This is a super package, and I got a lifetime
warranty on the Logitech Mouse vs. Radio Shack's 90 day. Rodney C.

You must install it properly for it to work by using a Shift-F1 (Setup),

RE: Expansion (con't) (Re: Msg 13901)
     From: MISAL To: SCOTTBARBER

From what I see in the Tandy catalog, the Memory Plus board is 25-1062. The
Memory Plus by itself only adds 256K. Your T1000 has 128K on the motherboard.
This only totals 384K. To get 640K, you would need to connect the additional
PLUS board to the existing board.

On the Plus board there are jumpers to allow different configurations. You have,
I assume tried these different configurations. I believe that they do not work
due to the different "bus" configuration that the older 1000's use (bus lines 2
and 5 are reversed). The Memory Plus being configured for the 1000EX and HX may
not work on your older 1000.

I hope that these are recent purchases. If they are, then you might want to
return them and purchase a PBJ MFB-1000 Multifunction board. This is "for" the
older 1000 models. I had one in my T1000 and it worked great. You can get one
from COMPUTER PLUS (800-343-8124) for around $200. It already contains 256K and
has room for another bank of 256K chips. This effectively brings the older
1000's up to 640K (there is a DMA chip on the PBJ board, a serial port and
real-time clock/calendar).

Now, the bus being different on your 1000 may not affect the Plus board you have
as it is a different part number than the newer ones - but - the new add-on
board probably will.

Let me know if I am on target here.

      I have a question about my hardcard - a Seagate ST-125 with a WD1002-27x
controller.
If I understand correctly this drive is a MFM drive but the controller is
a RLL controller.
The drive is supposed to be 20 MB and indeed that's what it gives me. But
if it's hooked up to this RLL controller it should give me around 30 MB or I
would have thought so anyway.
I bought it for 20 MB so that's not the problem. The problem is when I run
a program called SpinRite. It won't low level format the drive because it
recognizes it as RLL encoding which is reporting 17 sectors per track instead of
26. This is all as it should be. The fix for this controller according to the
SpinRite manual is to remove any jumper from position 5 and place one onto
position 6. In addition, remove the jumper W9.
The rough drawing below shows the jumper positions on my controller - no
jumper on position 5 but rather position 7. It did me no good to simply place a
jumper on position 6 and then remove the jumper from W9.
The other features of the program work just fine.

Any ideas on any of this? I use a Tandy 1000 TX.

Being as you already have a 10 megger in there, am I correct that you
set the jumper for disk 1 as disk 0 would be the 10 megger? Check to see
that there is such a jumper and that the jumper on the hardisk is set
the same. I know with Ontract, which writes software for Seagate, it prompts

I have not checked for a disk 0 or disk 1 jumper. I removed the 10 meg and
replaced it with the 20 meg so the 20 meg would remain drive C:, that is, disk
0. I did check with Seagate on the proper location of the jumper on the drive
and they assure me it is correct. The jumper is on the last pair, closest to the
20pin cable. The low level formatter does prompt for drive 0 or drive 1. I
forgot the exact sequence. Tonite, I will reassemble the new configuration and
record the prompts from the formatter.

Yes. Here comes the good stuff you need:

          NOTE 2: TANDY 1000 SYSTEMS - The WD1002A-WX1, WD1004A-WX1,
WDXT-GEN2 and the WD1004-27X can be modified to operate in
Tandy 1000 series computers, models SX, TX and the original or
"A" version. These computers utilize an interrupt of 2 (IRQ2)
instead of IRQ5, the IBM standard. To modify the WD1002A-WX1 or
the WD1002-27X to operate in these systems, you must cut the
etch between pin 1 and pin 2 at jumper position W-7. Then
solder pin 2 and pin 3 at the position (W-7). To complete the
modification, a jumper must be added to position 7 of switch S-1
(2 rows of 8 pins). PLEASE NOTE THAT ANY PHYSICAL MODIFICATION
TO YOUR WESTERN DIGITAL HARD DISK CONTROLLER VOIDS THE WARRANTY
ON YOUR BOARD. To modify the WD1004A-WX1, WDXT-GEN2 or the
WD1004-27X for your Tandy 1000 system, a zero ohm resister must
be soldered to jumper position W-27. This will change the
          interrupt from IRQ5 to IRQ2.

The error 80 is telling you that your controller is either incorrect or bad.
Reggie has provided the correct information for you to configure a WD
controller. This is as I told you earlier to supply the correct interrupts (2
and 5 were switched on the 1000 and 1000A) to the controller I/O.

I am going to assume that your controller is not a 10 meg controller (although
it may be, as it was produced in 1984). This being the case, you must cut the
traces to interrupts 2 and 5, and jump them, as Reggie explained. You simply
take a knife and cut out a small piece of each trace (an exacto knife or razor
blade works well). You then hardwire 2 to 5 and 5 to 2, by soldering "copper"
conductor wire (don't use the white metal conductor, stranded copper is best).

Tin the ends of the wire and tin the traces on the board, then solder them in
place. Use a soldering iron - NOT - a soldering gun (too hot).

Be sure you have the correct controller ROM - Good Luck - Keep us posted.

It would be very unusual if the controller were an RLL and the drive MFM. Being
a hard card, this would be very strange.

The only thing that comes to mind is that you are using this with an older T1000
(yes?). If so, there is a current thread in forum on this topic. It has to do
with Tandy's use of interrupt 2 and 5 on the motherboard - they are switched as
compared to the IBM standard.

board and its OK. WD said "jumper??!!" like they knew nothing about it. They
also told me to get a new controller BIOS, which is #62-000094-002. At Reggie's

Yes... I think I may see light at the end of the tunnel (no trains, please).
The controller is WD1002-WX2. It is the original controller that came with the
T1000-HD and a Tandon 10MB drive. I ordered the new controller BIOS from WD
#62-000094-002, installed it location U14, jumped W7 pins 2 & 3 and SW1 pin 7. I
still cannot get the drive to respond. What is the difference with the WX1
board? Is WX1 a standard 100% PC board that has to be modified? Will the WX1
board support the ST225 and the Tandon? What I would eventually like to do is
put the 10MB & a 3.5 floppy in an external case, assuming my motherboard floppy
controller can support it. In the meantime (like until there's enough cash to do
all this), I would just like to replace the 10MB with a 20MB. If the WX1
controller is the answer, I'll get it right away.

RE: Tandy 1000 Better Video (Re: Msg 13980)
     From: MISAL To: JEFFPYNE

You can drive the composite monitor from your Tandy machine, Jeff - but, if you
have a TTL (hercules compatible) card, why not get a TTL monitor? They are very
inexpensive ($69). Your composite monitor probably boasts 700-1000 lines to
center, and while this sounds great, it really isn't. A TTL monitor will produce
720 by 348 resolution (RGB is only 640 by 200) - this, I know you will
appreciate.

If you really want to drive the composite monitor, you must know if it is
'postive' or 'negative' video that it requires. Your screen going blank may
indicate a postive "Y" signal, while the monitor expects a negative "Y" signal
(Y=bright - pix tube gun firing at the raster).

From your Tandy's video drive find the RED signal pin and the GROUND pin. If you
connect RED to the center of an RCA plug (like a stereo plug) and the ground pin
to the outer casing of the RCA plug, you have the connection you need to drive
the composite monitor.

DOS try MODE LFOFF. If this doesn't do it, find pin 14 on your printer cable and
place a small piece of scotch tape on it (don't cover any pin except 14). This
will effectively stop the Linefeed, as that pin controls it!

I've seen in a catalog the Seagate ST-125 referred to as MFM and I've also
seen the WD 27x controller referred to as RLL. SpinRite reports it as RLL also.
The strange thing is the drive is a 20MB drive. With an RLL controller it should
be around 30MB. I wonder if the controller has been "adjusted" to give 20MB with
this drive like it would with a MFM controller. Then if a customer wanted a 30MB
drive the controller would be left as it's supposed to an deliver 30MB. Hmmmmm.

That changing of switch 2, at least on the SX, was only needed if you
were going to use Tandy's SPOOLER.COM. It seems that it fights for the
same interupt thus, they advise you to change switch 2. I did it when I first
got my hardcard but have since changed it back to the normal "on"
positon. I would bet it's the same story for the TX. If you aren't using
the SPOOLER program, I bet you can leave it at the default.

From what you have described, it sounds like you are using a print spooler. I
have had a problem with missing characters using spoolers. Your situation would
be compounded (missing whole lines) with a daisywheel.

Run a little test - from DOS (with no spooler of TSR's installed) send a text
file to the printer using the TYPE FILENAME.EXT >PRN command and director. Let
me know of this prints correctly.

You are correct - the TX should work just like and IBM compatible, when it comes

solution - if the controller is configured for the older 1000 then you have
effectively "re-introduced" the problem a T1000 would encounter!

John, it sounds to me that there is a problem with the NEC's internal
buffer. All printers (all modern printers) have an internal buffer. It
sounds as tho the buffer is being overrun. When the buffer fills up,
it's supposed to send a signal to the CPU to hold on until it catches
up. In other words, you probably need service. I suspect that your Word
Processor has it's own buffer that might flush the printer's and take control
of that function. Try installing Zucker's Spooler, feed it a file, and let
us know what happens.

Your problem is indeed strange, John. One WP allows you to print without sending
data to the "bit-buket", yet DOS will lose whole lines. I am beginning to
suspect your printer cable. On the lines of the cable there is one line that
handles a "busy" signal. This halts output from the computer until the printer
catches up (it is especially helpful for printers without built in buffers).

The second thing that comes to mind is the bps rate at which the printer can
handle character input. Is this a serial daisywheel, using COM1? If so, then the
TYPE FILENAME >PRN should not have worked.

     From: MISAL To: JLPRATT

A call to Perry confirms that EGA "can" be used on the T1000A, but one has to
"cut traces". This is due to the odd way that Tandy set up the video driver on
the motherboard. If they had just set a dedicated circuit for the video, you
could have popped in an EGA card. However, they use this circuit for other
system calls. The configuration (surgery) for EGA is extensive and may cause
problems (due to minor mistakes, bridges, etc.).

A VGA card on the T1000 or T1000A, I am told, is next to impossible.

The SX and TX now have switches on the motherboard to disable, or at least not
allow the mother-driver to interfer with expansion video cards.

Sorry that I don't have better news - I had thought that there was a fairly
simple way around this.

I'm talking about DIPS in your Computer. What kind of 1000 is it? SX, EX,
or plain old 1000 or A? If it is an SX, then you have 4 DIPS. There is
a little known addendum that came with the manual, that tells you to turn
DIP 2 off if you are using a hard drive and a spooler. And yes. The IBM
BIOS is different than Tandy's. What seems to be happening, is the WP is
sending code (IBM) that your printer understands. I would take a guess
here that the program is bypassing your Tandy BIOS and taking complete
control over the printer. The printer, being IBM Compatible, has found
someone who understands it's language. (Your WP) I'm not sure if that
BIOS chip is the most current. I'll check mine (1000SX), the next time
I power off. I would guess that an upgraded BIOS would be the ticket if
yours indeed is an early model.

Will let you know what mine is next time,

I logged off, rebooted, and got the numbers for you.

Mine is 01.02.00. My machine will be 3 years old in November.
I would ask Tandy if there is an upgraded BIOS for your machine.

You seem to be lacking a DEF SEG pointer in your Basic program that "points" to
the first byte location of your assembly routine. Assuming that the data lines
are present, it should go something like this:

10 DEF SEG=&H3000
20 FOR N=0 TO 9
30 READ Q
40 POKE N,Q
50 NEXT

Once the routine loaded (and manipulated) in memory is ready to be called, you
must again use DEF SEG (&H3000).

An easier way to poke it into memory without worrying about memory allocation
is to use VARPTR...something like this:

10 DEF SEG
20 ' subroutine code goes here
30 Y=VARPTR(subroutine data string - we will use X$)
40 Z=PEEK(Y+1)+PEEK(Y+2)*256 <-- calculates the address
50 CALL Z (call the subroutine)

I think my machine has 2 chips but I'm not sure. The upgrade for your machine,
takes 2. I remember reading something about it here on Delphi. If I'm correct,
it involves cutting of traces. Mike (MISAL) can probably shed more light on
this than I can. I do know that RS won't give the info out as they like to
get those service $$ and they don't want to accept the responsibility of
something going wrong. I will look in my SX Technical Ref. book to see the
location and quantity. I think on my machine they are under the disk drives.

The BIOS ROM chips are definetly under the drives, as I have upgraded to

upgrade I would appreciate it. My 1000 does have two sockets, and my 01.01.00
only usessocket, the other o ne is currently empty. The local Radio Shack
dealers are driving me crazy! I went to two of them today looking to order the
upgrades and no one can give me any info! I will have to keep trying dealers
until I can find one that I can order them from. I hope you or Reggie can give
me the installation info. I don't mind spending the money, but I hate to lay my
machine up for a couple of weeks. Thanks for the help. John

I am Reggie! You must have thought you addressed this to Mike (MISAL).
I can't ( Reggie ) tell you how to do the upgrade. If there are 2 sockets
one empty and one begging for a chip, I would assume ( keyword ASS ) that
all that is needed, is to buy the two chip set and install them. I have
Tandy's National Parts number here somewhere but I can't find it. Maybe
you can call information for it. Their address is:

Tandy National Parts
900 E. Northside Drive
Fort Worth, TX 76102

Tell them you're an independent computer tech and you've just recently
started servicing Tandy products. They are reluctant to give tech info
to the average guy.

It's an 800 number. I called them for some white plastic keyboard parts
and didn't have a part number or nothing. The local RS didn't know what
I was talking about. If you call them and give them your Model number
and serial number, I'm sure they will help. Ask also, if they have an
instruction sheet to accompany the parts.

     2-harddrive tandy 1000sx
     From: SABIOG To: ALL

My Tandy 1000SX is equipped with two 5.25" 360K floppy drives, a 32-meg harcard,
an internal modem (1200 baud), and a multifunction board (AST Research
SixPakPlus). I am planning to add another storage device by removing one of the
floppy drives and installing a half-height hard disk drive (such as Seagate
ST238, 14.8 watts). Is this possible? If it is, will the built-in controller for
the 2 floppy drives support the new hard drive? (The harddrive kit includes a WD
controller, but I don't want to use up another slot.) If it can installed, which
of the hard drives will be designated as C> or D> and from which drive should
the computer boot? Are there any switches/jumpers positions on the motherboard
that have to be changed? Also, with the added harddrive (less one floppy drive),
would this overload the 67-watt power supply of the Tandy 1000SX?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Lots of interesting questions here Steve. You say you already have a 32 meg
installed. The controller for that should have another set of pins to support
another HD. The controller on the mother board of the SX will support NOTHING
but another floppy. The power supply question is just that. A QUESTION. I
think you'de be safer if you installed an external HD with it's own power
supply at this point. That 67 watts can only stretch so far. You would have
to set the jumper on the hard drive number 2 to positon "1". You have a 32
meg installed now. Is it an ST238 also? If so, you'll see the jumper I'm
talking about set on "0" right now. This would be drive "C" and would be
your boot drive. The controller you got with the new 238 will support 2 RLL
drives. I will E-Mail you some info on the drives and controllers.

The BIOS upgrade for a hard drive, on "some" of the older T1000's required
cutting a resistor and jumpering the cuts. This is dangerous if one does not
know "exactly" what one is doing in this upgrade. You can FRY your computers
memory along with assorted support chips.

I do not and will not give out this information, as I would not want to be
responsible, in way, for a French-fried-bit-churner!

     From: MISAL To: SABIOG

No, your SX does not have a dual floppie/hard drive controller. You would need
to purchase a controller (or replace your present floppie controller with a dual
- to save a slot).

I suggest that you would be starting to "push" your power supply if you add the
new hard drive and another controller. However, by removing the floppie
controller and replacing it with a dual hard/floppie controller; and removing
the 2nd floppie to add the new hard drive - your power consumption would remain
about the same (whew - long sentence).

By leaving the "terminating resistor" in the last hard drive and removing it
from the primary hard drive - you can control which is primary and which is
secondary. This is, of course, after you have moved the jumpers on the hard
drives, telling the circuitry which actually is "0" and which is "1" ("1" would
have the terminating resistor). The "jumper blocks" are easy to see and access.

Now, for the question - does your Hard Card support 2 hard drives? Some will and
some won't. Last - if your controller will support another hard drive, make sure
that you stay with RLL or MFM - whichever the controller support - don't mix
'em!

Hi John,

I know your printer is a 3500R But.......................

I found some info on the cables for the NEC 7000 line. The pin-outs
are as follows:

   Serial Port Printer
   1 1
   2 3
   3 2
   4 5
   5 19
   6 & 8 20
   7 7
   20 6 & 8

It looks almost like your configuration except for the way the 6,8, and
20 pins are wired. This configuration, allows the printer to inform the PC
that it's receiving buffer is full.

I hope this helps as that's all folks!

products. I'm not sure of the correct use of ARC600. I will mail you a help
file on ARCing, Dearcing and the such. I recommend that you download
PK361.EXE. The file I'm going to mail you will explain what to do after
you get it. As long as you used the XMODEM on Deskmate, the file will
be good. Don't use buffer-capture for binary files. When you get ready
to download, tell Delphi "XMD" for Xmodem Download. Then follow the
prompts and start Deskmate's proceedure. If you have Qmodem, by all means
use that and try Ymodem. At the download prompt you would type "YD or YBD"
for Ymodem Download or Ymodem-Batch download.

I'll mail you the file on how to ARC and Unarc files.

Which version of Deskmate do you have? I think some of them DIDN'T have
Xomdem. If you have Qmodem, use that. If you don't have a way to use
Xmodem, I can send you a file that you can use with Deskmate, that's
memory resident, that will give you Xmodem. With that file, you can
download via Xmodem, PcPlustd, Telix, or one of the other popular Comm.
programs.

Reggie: First off........HAPPY EASTER!!!. I was wondering why you sent me
that. No problem. By the way, I followed your suggestion about running Norton
Utilities with the printer driver program that lets my printer support
bidirectional printing. In r eviewing it, I can't find anything to see what
code is bidirectional in the driver program. Most frustrating! All codes sent
to this printer begin with an escape code, and there are no escape codes in the
driver program. I do notice that my printer is a
model 3500R, and the driver program is for the NEC models 2010/2030/8010. I
wonder if there is some different code to support the bidirectional printing,
but I tend not to think so. What I find curious is that according to my printer
manual it does not support bidirectional printing, yet this WP program makes it
do it. The plot thickens!! Thanks for the help. John

First of all thanks for all the help, both you and Mike have really helped. I
down loaded qmodem because of the article where he said it was a good telecom
program. As you can see I don't know that much about all this yet. I wanted
something that may b was on the easy side to use. Later on when I get versed in
this I would like to get info maybe from the library etc. I have th original
DESKMATE from a few years ago, it has a buffer of only 170000KB etc. I just
felt that a newer program might be better I won't beable to use the qmodem until
I can't dearc it. Do I pay someone for the program? I'am trying to learn as
much as I cI can but sometimes things arn't found in the books or are poorly
explained. But throught trial and error and good info (you an Mike, and of
course the others) I'll learn. Thanks again

The program I mailed to you, you can capture with Deskmate's Buffer. Then follow
the instructions and run the programs in BASIC and they will create a small .COM
program that you use on top of Deskmate for Xmodem transfers. When you get it
working, download PKX361.EXE and follow the instructions I sent you on ARCHELP.

We'll get you going. Two years and a piece ago, I was asking these same
questions of MISAL and JOEPIERCE. I know it seems that everyone else has a
handle on this stuff but, we've ALL been where you are now. Believe me, it gets
better.

If you have managed to download Qmodem, then you should be able to download
PKX361. This will "dearc" Qmodem for you. You will find it in the Utilities
Topic.

Try Qmodem for awhile. If you like it, then register it. The doc's (once you
have deacred it) will explain.

Mike

(if you have trouble downloading PKX361, let me know. I will make it a smaller
package for you to get started)

Is it possible to use a video card, specifically the Tandy Dual

The service technician at my local Radio Shack Service Center says there would
be a conflict, ie: the Express Card expects certain DIP switches to be set.

1701 means the system doesn't see the hard card anymore. You will have
to probably do a "Low level" format again. Before you do that though,
you might first try " FDISK", then if that takes, do a "FORMAT C: /S".

Something happened to trash your system files most likely. Let's hope
it's not a complete crash. How long have you had it?

Actually, I would never have known that the controller on this hardcard was
RLL were it not for SpinRite reporting it as such.
As for the drive being mismatched to it, I'm not completely sure. It's a
Seagate ST-125. I did see it advertised in a catalog and it was called a MFM
drive. Perhaps it was a misprint. Does anybody know for sure if the ST-125 is
MFM or RLL?

It's confusing alright! Let me clarify:

It is a hardcard. The ST-125 drive is physically attached to the WD 27x

to a MFM controller?

No Doc. When ever I want to print anything and still whistle while
I work, I use DOS's PRINT.COM. I seem to get the same results without
locking up the machine. You could buy one of those dedicated hardware
buffers that are external to the system. Try the PRINT command first.
You can put up to 32 files in the print queue. The default is 10 files.
