John, I put a 3-1/2" drive in my SX, replacing the 5-1/4" it came with in the B:
slot (I have the original two drive version), with no problems, DOS recognizes
it, with no extra call to let it know there's now a 3-1/2" where there was a
5-1/4". This is with DOS 3.2. 3.3 may not be as tolerant, but I sold the
superfluous 5-1/4" to a TX user, who installed it as his B: drive, with no
problems.

  Hollie,

  I have a Tandy 1000TL and the way . . .

. . . you disable DeskMate being loaded on boot up is to reconfigure
a rom-resident program called SETUPTL. I would think that a similar one,
likely called SETUPSL, would be used on your friend's SL.

Use of this setup facility is explained in the operator manual under "Changing
  Computer Defaults."

On second thought, the SETUPTL (or SL) routine to change the EEPROM may be on
the DOS diskette. I'd have to log off to look for sure. Anyway, just locate
that SETUPSL and run it. It is self-prompting. One of the several choices you
have is whether to run DeskMate on startup or simply land at the DOS prompt.

     Tandy VGA monitors
     From: JIMREED To: ALL

  I was at a Radio Shack Computer Center today . . .

. . . taking a close look at Tandy's new VGM-200 monitor and must say
I was disappointed. Their old EGA monitor looked much better to me.

Has anyone seen the VGM-300, which I hear is much, much better?

The dot pitch on the VGM-200 is only .42, I think, whereas the higher priced
VGA monitor has .31 dot pitch, so it *should* be a lot crisper.

If the VGM-200 had type as big as CGA or EGA monitors, then it would compare
more favorably, I think. But, that monitor does little for me since they sort
of softened its impact by also reducing size of type.

I am looking for crisp text and don't care much about graphics. I was spoiled
by the Tandy 2000's crisp type face and now this 1000Tl and CM-11 just leave
me wanting, . . . but that new VGM-200 seems to be no improvement to me.

Also, does anyone have any comments concerned Tandy's VGA board as compared to
  the Paradise VGAplus board?

Frankly, the Tandy EGA monitor looks like a big improvement over the CM-11,
but so many people say it is not that much of an improvement. If EGA were
cheaper, I'd probably go for it, but VGA seems to be the smarter thing to do,
since it costs almost the same as Tandy EGA (monitor plus board). But, that
VGM-300 had better look a LOT better than that VGM-200.

Would appreciate any help! As I said, number of colors and graphics capability
not important to me; I just want crisp text when using ProComm and word
  processors.

Well, yes, afraid that is, indeed, the case . . .

          . . . that the cheaper Tandy VGM-200 has only a .42 dot pitch.

There are several factors determining the resolution of a monitor and dot
pitch is only one, but an important one. Bandwidth and convergence also are
  major factors.

Overall, though, just sitting in front of the monitor and seeing what you get
is the proof of the pudding for me. Candidly, I have yet to see many mointors
(except for monochrome and multisync color) that will outperfrom the CM-1 I
had on my old Tandy 2000. I liked that character set, too, and I'd still be
using that machine were it not so lacking in compatibility.

You know, yesterday I called all over Louisville trying to find someone who
had a Tandy VGM-300 I could come look at. After finding a store that had one,
I asked if it was in stock. "Yes." Is it there is the store? "Yes." May I come
and look at it? "Yes." So I drove some a small distance to get their only to
find that I could "look" at it, but I could not see it in operation since they
had nothing but 1000s and no boards! (Grrrrr!)

I may find that old Tandy CM-1 hard to beat, since Ed Ellers tells me it has
400 scan lines, compared with 350 in many of the monitors I have been looking
at. That compares with 525 scan lines, I believe, on TV screens, but a techie
I'm certainly not. You'd think -- at least I would -- that monitor technology
would start with 525 scan lines and evolve from there. I mean, in Europe, for
years and years, they've had 600+ scan lines and, therefore, sharper TV
  images.

Why is it monitors have so few scan lines?

Anyway, what I am learning is that VGA, by itself, means little. You need a
quality monitor to enjoy the fruits of VGA technology or you might as well
  stick with what you have.

Here's part of the scoop -- North American and Japanese TV uses 525 scan lines,
but only 483 actually carry the picture. (The other systems use 625 lines, with
575 being "active.") However, the lines are "interlaced;" each vertical field
(59.94 per second here, 50 for 625 lines) carries only half the number of lines
needed to make up a full picture. This allows the TV system to have the benefit
of the high (50-60 Hz) field rate (25 or 30 would cause a LOT of flicker) while
not requiring the wide bandwidth that a full 525- or 625-line picture would
require.

In computers, however, interlaced scanning can still result in a flickering
image in detailed areas of the picture, so nearly all computer displays are
"progressive" or non-interlaced. To go beyond 192 (for Color Computer) or 225
(Tandy 1000) active lines you have to run a higher horizontal scan rate -- more
lines per second, and therefore more lines per field. The VM-1 and CM-1
displays ran their horizontal sweep at approximately 25 kHz, as opposed to the
15.734 kHz rate of U.S. TV, to get their 400-active-line non-interlaced display;
EGA monitors run at about 21.85 kHz, and VGA gets up to 31.5 kHz (about 35 kHz
for 800x600 SuperVGA). These monitors are also "underscanned" so that the
active picture area is completely visible on the picture tube surface. (If you
were able to set up a TV monitor for underscanning -- some will, many won't --
you would see every bit of the picture but you'd probably also see the test and
data signals that are transmitted before the active area of each field. TV
studios often run their monitors this way.)

          . . . but I know I don't understand all of it.

Regarding your statements in the last paragraph, I do remember when I worked
in a TV station years ago that our monitors could see more of the picture than
the home monitors could. Is that a result of "underscanning"?

For instance, when the Johnny Carson show was on, at the studio we could see
the boom microphone going back and forth above Johnny and his guests' heads
even though those at home could not see it -- not getting as much of the
picture as we did. Sometimes you see some funny stuff "on the edges."

Cutting through the technical stuff, do you agree with Mike Salisbury, I take

  Ed,

  Having reread your message . . .

. . . are you saying that all EGA and VGA monitors are underscanned?
If so, is that why there is a dark, non-picture area all the way around the
screen? None of the computers at the local Tandy Computer Center had a picture
that was (as they used to say in sandwich ads on TV) "spread to the edge."

Or, was that simply because I had DeskMate booted up on all three monitors so
I could see the same image all the three different screens? I guess if I had
ProComm running on them, the screen would have been "full."

And does interlacing account for the flickering you see in IBM monitors?

Also, I take it the best monitors are able to produce noninterlaced 1,024 x
768 resolution, but that many monitors simply cannot make the grade. I also
take it that since I am unlikely to get a multisync monitor, the matter of
noninterlaced ultra high resolution does not concern me anyway.

My personal opinion of any monitor greater than .31 dot pitch is that of a
wasted effort. True, they are cheaper to manufacture due to the lesser amount of
phosphor used, but then the quality of the display suffers.

I was not aware that they even made .40+ dot pitch for VGA - YUK!

You have the main idea, Jim. On a 14" VGA monitor, the horizontal scan does not
cover the whole width of the screen. Depending on what type of monitor, you may
have 1/2 to 1" of unused area, both left and right.

Now, doing a physical count of the phosphor dots and subtracting the ones that
the scan does not reach - wouldn't you rather have a lesser dot pitch (more dots
per sq. in.)?

I am not sure why you will not get a multisync monitor, but if it is the cost
you could get the NEC Multisync GS (GS=gray scale). I have one and it is a super
piece of video equipment. It is not color but you can get 64 to 256 shades of
gray. Looks super with Aldus of PFS First Pub.

Jim, that's exactly it -- TV stations often use underscanning for exactly that
reason, to see the WHOLE picture. (By the way, the newer "full-square" 20",
26", 27" and other such sets usually don't show the whole picture because the
sets are adjusted to fill the whole screen under all operating conditions. )

As for the .42 dot pitch, it may be okay for an economy monitor for a CGA or
Tandy 1000 system but if you care enough to go for EGA or VGA then you really
need something at .31 mm or less.

RE: Tandy VGA monitors (Re: Msg 14314)

Jim, the underscanning is EXACTLY why you see a black border, just as you saw in
TV studios.  The text border is only available on CGA and Tandy 1000 displays;
you won't see it on EGA, VGA or higher.

The only IBM monitor I know of that uses interlacing is the 8514 display, which
shows 1024x768 with a special board (only on Micro Channel systems). Now if
you've seen flickering on an IBM green monitor that would be because of the low
field rate of 50 Hz used in monochrome boards. The multi-frequency monitors you
speak of are using a different 1024x768 mode with a very low field rate, and
these have to have long-persistence phosphors to reduce flicker because of this.
(In fact, some VGA boards like the Video 7 VEGA will flicker on most monitors
even at 800x600; we had to step one down to 752x410 at the office, while a
Paradise VGA Plus looks fine at 800x600.)

Mike, it's not a greater or lesser amount of phosphor, but the difference in
precision needed for the different dot pitch and the resulting yield of good
screen/mask assemblies. Also, tubes are NOT "made for VGA" or any other
standard -- CRTs are designed to meet pitch, convergence, focus, colorimetry and
other tube-dependent requirements and THEN engineers specify tubes for their
monitors, so it's not a matter of someone making a .42 tube for VGA but of
someone choosing to put a .42 tube in a VGA monitor. You could actually put a
normal TV tube in a 1024x768 monitor, if you were dumb enough to do it; all
you'd have to do is set up the CRT drive stages for the optimum voltages for the
tube, as with any CRT.

a matter of time. There are better ways to send your messages up. You can
create them with your Word processor as long as it saves the files in ASCII.
Then, when you type REPLY in the forum and receive the old "Please enter your

is transfered, you can add to it or press CONTROL Z to record it. Saves lots
of $$$ that way. The other more cumbersome way, would be to upload to Work

"REPLY REGGIE.DOC" or whatever name you gave your file. You then have to
remember to go back to delete the file in WS as you will have to pay storage

Yes, I understand that it is not the "amount" of phosphor, Ed (guess I didn't
make that clear). It is the choice of the manufacturer to put a .40+ pitch tube
in a monitor that bothers me. They may go with whatever design philosophy they
deem adequate for special orders, I suppose. The point I was trying to make was
that a .42 dot pitch cathode ray tube, in a VGA monitor is almost absurd. To the
unsuspecting public, the prices of such monitors are appealing - UNTIL they
actually see the "lousy" resolution.

After Joe-User has checked to see that his video driver is not at fault, or his
system - he is past the "30 day refund period" (if one was even offered). This
leaves them to pack it up, send it back and pay a 25% restocking charge (not to

So, I maintain - STAY AWAY FROM ANYTHING OVER .31 DOT PITCH.

The one by DataDesk that's advertised in PCM Magazine. They call it the
Turbo 101. It's made for the Tandy 1000 line and, you don't need an adaptor
card like you do for the one Tandy sells. Just plug that sucker in and
you're off and running. Datadesk advertises it for $169.00 plus $10.00
shipping. They're bundling a software product called "ThinkTank" with it
as an added incentive. I bought it from CDA who is also an advertiser in
PCM Mag. for $139.00. You still get a software offering of either ThinkTank,
Turbo Lightning, or SuperKey.

     From: JOHNMYSELF To: DOUGFOGG

I don't know about the partitioning with the software seagate provides. I have
the disk (not yet installed). I was told that the ONTRACK Disk Manager software
does a low level format, will handle the partitioning, but may not do the high
level format. I know hformat will work to 33 Mb. I checked that using HEXED to
read the image file. 33 Mb was the upper limit.

Then there is the fdisk program. again, not sure if it will run on the 2000 or
if there is a version that will.

What I expect to do is set up the new drive with a 10 or 12 Meg partition for
the dos as drive c, and use the rest as the normal user disk as drive d.

thanks so far folks. I really appreciate it.

     hard disk
     From: GENVESTINC To: ALL

    I am running a 1000sx with a Seagate 238R. Every time I use the machine, I
make sure to run the parking program at shut off time. Recently, I renovated my
office and moved the computers around to take advantage of telephone jacks.
Before moving the Tandy, I made sure that the head was parked. When I re-started
the PC, I made one small change in its configuration. I placed the CM-11 monitor
directly on top of the 1000 SX. When I tried to start it up, the hard disk
would not boot. I tried unsuccessfuly several times to boot up the machine with
the HD. Finally, the unit booted up with a floppy 3.2. When I tried to access
drive C, however, the machine told me that a C: drive was invalid. I tried
several times more by re-booting the machine through the floppy to no avail.
It was then that I remembered that when the 1000SX had been in its previous
location, the monitor was located adjacent to it. Has anyone ever run into this
before? Should the Tandy support the weight of the CM-11
and still run the hard disk. AM I LOOKING AT SOME COSTLY REPAIRS HERE??
Any suggestions would be very helpful. Thanks.

     Sony Trinitron Monitor
     From: JIMREED To: ALL

  Just found a sweet deal on a Sony Trinitron . . .

         . . . multi-syn monitor and grabbed it. So far, I love it -- and I do
not even have the VGA card yet. I am running it in CGA at the moment, but it
is enough of an improvement in CGA to satisfy me until the VGA+ card arrives.

I have the CPD-1303 (a store demo) and I decided on it because the picture
simply looks better on it (I looked at it in three different stores) than any
other monitor I looked at. I restricted my looking to monitors within my
price range; I know there are ones to beat it.

I read a review in the current PC Magazine that gave Sony down the road for
its monitor technology, but I think it looks great and what else matters.

It is one of the few with no antiglare screen and I can see a couple of things
reflected, but other monitors seem to lose a lot with those antiglare screens.
I think it is not worth giving up the clarity and color brilliance I get on
this monitor to add any antiglare device.

Well, anyway, so far, so good.

The Tandy CM-11 was a good one, I thought, and it had a great antiglare
screen, but it would not do VGA, etc., thus, the reason I got the Sony.

     New KLOK2K Ver. 4.4
     From: DOUGFOGG To: ALL

I just uploaded KLOK2K.COM Version 4.4 to the Tandy Specific library. It's a
utility for all Tandy 2000's which puts 24-hour time in the upper right corner
of the screen in all video modes. It also has an integral screen blanker. Both
time display and blanking functions can be toggled on and off with the "hot"
keys of your choice. Blanking interval is adjustable at any time from 1 to 1638
seconds. Default blanking interval is 5 minutes (300 seconds) and default hot
keys are ALT-K and ALT-B, for clocK display and Blanker, respectively. Full
instructions are on KLOK2K's sign-on screen.

Blow away any earlier versions of KLOK2K you may have and get 4.4. It fixes
some nasty bugs that seemed to show up mostly, but not exclusively, when KLOK2K
was resident in memory above the first 256K. Disk-reading errors and random
crashes will no longer occur with 4.4. The program's 6309 bytes, but uses only
2096 bytes once resident in memory. This is a tad larger than earlier versions
but well worth it.

I hope this is absolutely the LAST version of KLOK2K. If I have to type
"MASM KLOK2K---LINK KLOK2K---EXE2BIN KLOK2K KLOK2K.COM" one more time...! (I
know, I shoulda used a batch file.)

Now let's see... I could make the 24-hour format switchable to 12, make the
display position selectable, put in an alarm...

Before we go thorugh a voice session, Mike, which version of Deskmate are you
using. Earlier versions did not have the Xmodem protocol. This is a binary
download format, which we use in the SIG (and is used everywhere, now). It has
an error handling capability, so that you will not receive corrupt download
files.

We can get you downloading no matter which version you have - but, we need to

John, Logictech provides a 1-2-3 menu driver with their mouse. All that is
needed is to place the driver in the 1-2-3 subdirectory, and call it first when
invoking 1-2-3. I found it to be more time consuming than the keyboard entry
system. It failed to respond instantly to single key presses on the mouse, and
took too much time to align on the title bar to get the correct menu pulled
down. The single letter keys selection was superior.

     T1000HD expansion
     From: DBAN To: RLYOUNG

Reggie, I bring you the continuing saga of a 20MB drive in a T1000HD. I have
reached another brick wall. Neither of the DISKMNGR programs that GREGL sent me
can access the ST225. I have recontacted Western Digital who swear that the
WD1002-WX2 controller will work with the ST225. I have added BIOS #62-000094-002
and jumped pin 7 on SW1 as well as moved the jumper over pins 1 & 2 (instead of
2 & 3) on W6, per their instructions. I even reinstalled the old BIOS in an
attempt to get 10MB formatted with the same "Error-80" result. The only thing
left that I can think of is this...If the power supply does not have enough
juice, will it run the ST225 and just not make it come up to speed? If I
remember correctly, you have a config somewhat near mine: I have all 3 slots
filled as follows:
Memory Plus with add'l memory to get 640K. RS232 serial plus board piggy-
backed. PC Technologies 286 card in slot 2 (it does get hot). The WD controller
in slot 3. Once again, the 10MB works fine. I wouldn't think that the Seagate
takes more power than the Tandon but maybe its just enough to mess things up.
What do you think?

No...I don't think it's the power supply Dave. One other thing you might
check...The spot where you attach the cables to the hard drive has some
pins marked as 0 1 2 3 or 1 2 3 4. Make sure the jumper is on the first
set of pins, the furthest to the left. These are the drive select pins.
According to a book I have right in front of me from Western D., error
80 is in there own words " Drive select jumper on the hard disk drive unit
is set incorrectly. or the cables are backwards. Also bad cables, no power
to drive, or bad drive".

Here are a few things to check (maybe again), Dave. The Seagate St-225 should
have a jumper across DS1 if it is used in an XT and across DS2 if an AT.

The controller should have the narrow 20 pin ribbon cable attached to J2 (the
top connector) and the 34 pin ribbon cable attached to J1 (also the top
connection on the controller). Both cables have a colored stripe on one side.
This stripe should be facing the front of the controller (opposite the metal
connection bracket that goes to the chassis). The opposite ends of these cables
should have the colored stripe at pin #1 of each hard drive card edge connector.

Also, when using Disk Manager from ONTRACK, you can use the MANUAL low-level
format mode - BUT - you must use either DOS 3.3 or 3.31's FDISK and FORMAT to
partition/high-level format the drive -or - it will not boot.

Experiment a little with the DS1 and DS2 jumper settings on the ST-225. Any
small mistake in the areas outlined above could cause the problems your are
experiencing.

You could make a script file for your program at have it say GR TA. That'll take
ya straight to the Tandy SIG. You could also go to SETTINGS and choose TANDY as
your default upon logon.

There are two ways - you can place the needed commands (to get to Tandy Forum)
in an Autolog File or simply type them. Delphi will accept "stacked commands".
That is, if you type following after you get the "What do you want to do?"
message at Delphi's Main Menu:
GR TAN{enter}
FOR{enter}
{enter}

you will will go directly to the Tandy SIG, go into Forum and start reading
either the first message waiting for you or the highest message you have not
read.

This "command stacking" works all over Delphi. For intstance, if I wanted to
leave the Tandy SIG and go the PC-Compatibles SIG; enter the Databases area,
choose the Business Topic; read the first description therein, I would:

EX PC{enter}
DA{enter}
BUS{enter}
READ{enter}

You "DO NOT" have to wait for the prompts before typing in the commands, if
you know where you are going!

You could get a V-20 chip and faster memory. The V-20 is not too expensive but
memory is. There are also expansion (ram-charger) boards that will help in the
speed area. I believe that Reggie has one in his Tandy. I will have to check to
see if these 'ram-chargers' will work with the old 1000 bus.

The 286 Accellerator card that Tandy sells (PC Technologies), works in the
1000SX, 1000A, and the plain old vanilla 1000. It installs as-is in the SX
and the 1000A but, the 1000 needs a different daughterboard. I don't know
how I got along without the extra speed. I still kick down to 8088 mode for
some of my games.

This is a very useful upgrade. I understand Tandy in Canada had them on sale
for $150.00.

Mike, in your last exchange with Reggie, you suggested that the furthest pin

moved the jumper to the next set of pins and VOILA, "FORMAT SUCCESSFUL"!

Reggie, I'm with you. In my "UNIVERSAL INSTALLATION HANDBOOK" written and
supplied by Seagate with the Drive, it lists the pins as DS1 thru DS4, with DS1
being nearest the J2 (20 pin) connector. In the section marked "DRIVE SELECT
JUMPERS", it says to configure the drive as Drive Select 1 with an untwisted
cable and Drive Select 2 with a twisted cable. My cable is NOT split and twisted
at either end! It is a straight ribbon cable, Pin 1 to Pin 1. But, when I jumper
what is supposed to be DS2, it works!

OK! here's the final configuration:
    CONTROLLER--WD1002-WX2, Pins 2 & 3 jumpered at W7, Pins 1 & 2 jumpered
at W6, Pin Set 7 jumpered at SW1, BIOS replaced with

You can get it over in the databases in the PC Compatibles SIG. Enter the
Databases and choose TEL for Telecommunications. The type SEARCH and
PROCOMM. Hit RETURN to see a list of all the files that meet the Procomm
search criteria. You need either Procomm 2.4.3 or PCPLUSTD. I recommend
the latter as this is a shareware version of the commercial product.

And YES!!! Procomm is FAR superior to Deskmate's Telecom. Deskmate is
a program designed to have a little bit of everything and thereby can't
pack all the needed features into the program.

It appears that we got out wires crossed. When you use the SEND or WAITFOR
commands in Deskmate, they automatically place the "" around the text that is
sent or received. If you use SEND and type "DELPHI^M" while in DM's autolog, it
will then look like this ""DELPHI^M"".

You see, I explained that if you use an editor, you must place the quotes around
the text yourself - but - if you use DM, it does it for you.

You have to go into the PC Compatibles Sig. All the files are there. Choose the
option DATABASE from the menu. From there, you'll receive another menu of
Topics (Tandy Specific, Utilities, Tele-comunications ect.) I would advise
choosing the General Topic and downloading the Help file on Downloading. From
the General Topic, type SEARCH DOWNLOAD. It will present you with the filenames
of files that fit that criteria. Once you see the name of the file, type D for
DOWNLOAD and when prompted to "OK, receive !", start your programs XMODEM or
YMODEM protocol. You can also just do a Buffer Capture if the file is in ASCII.

If you used it with Deskmate, then the switches are good. It's got to
be the settings in Procomm that is hanging you up. Look in your manual

When you first set up Procomm, you set a default modem speed. Yours may be the
300 bps default. You can tell by first using ALT-P to make sure that you are set
to 1200, N, 8, 1. If you are at 300 baud when this screen appears, change it to
1200. Then try to dial out. If this works - reconfigure Procomm to 1200 bps.

     From: MISAL To: RAFLES

In order to download, you must be in the Databases menu. This is
accomplished by typing DA at the main SIG menu.

You are then presented with the Databases Topic menu from which you
choose the Topic you wish to download from.

Once in the Topic of your choice, you may type DIR to see a listing of
all the files in that Topic or a READ {filename} to get a description of
one of the programs. Let us assume that we have chosen the BUSINESS Topic
and that we want to download FILE EXPRESS. The following is the sequence,
with prompts and prompt answers to start the transfer:

ACTION> (Next, Down, Xm, List) YM
Type three consecutive <Control-C>'s to abort.
Ok, receive! (7292 bytes = 8 ymodem blocks, 57 xmodem blocks text)

At this point, we are in the DBASES, in the BUSINESS Topic, have typed
READ FILE EXPRESS, and typed YM for Ymodem download - the system is
telling us that it is ready to send and we should go to receive mode.

Your problem with printing and getting a disk full message may stem from the
fact that whenever WP50 prints from the edit screen, it makes another entire
copy of your document file to print from while you continue editing. In other
words, this means that you must have at a minimum 2 times the original file size
available on disk to print.

Now complicate this situation with automatic document backup creation and timed
file backups with an exceptional amount of editing and block moves or copies and
I can postulate a situation where WP50 can require up to FIVE times the original
file size while printing.

If it works with Deskmate, it's got to be in the setup of Procomm
Carole. I'd go over the setup screen very carefully. Oh! I told you
to put a ^M at the end of your Modem Intit. String. Procomm 2.4.2
uses a "!" without the quotes for Cariage Return. Instead of ^M at

internal modem. Supposedly the modem is hayes smartmodem 2400mb compatible .
Every time i try to run it the modem init does not work. I have also tried
numerous other BBS's(RBBS,WWIV,ADOUS?) they also just sit there. I have been
using X00.sys as a driver. Is there anyone out there who has a suggestion on
what BBS works with my machine. If so what is it? If you can offer any insight

I am using a Tandy 1000SX with MS-DOS VER 3.2 and a Practical Peripherals Model

function via the CTTY command with three separate Communications/Bulletin Board

"Hang up". I am unable to determine if the problem is with the Tandy 1000SX,

The three aforementioned programs (Procomm, Minihost, and RBBS-PC) purportedly
allow access to DOS and Standard Input//Output by redirecting the Standard
Input//Output through COM1. When configured in this manner you should be able to
access your DOS machine via any type terminal over the modem. But for some
reason or other after execution of the "CTTY COM1" command the System comes to a
screeching halt. I have tried to invoke this feature on both another Tandy
1000SX and two IBM AT's connected via modem to my System. I have followed the
instructions for each of the programs to the "letter" to no avail.

Yes but....What type of cable are you using? For that type of connection,
you need Null Modem cables instead of your normal cables. Did you use this
type? It's the same as the normal cable except it crosses lines 2 & 3.

     From: GO_OSU To: ZION

I have had a little bit of trouble with QBBS's modem init string. Check out the
C and F parameters, as they seem to be two of the lesser-implemented commmands
in Hayes compatible modems. Take the commands out, which I think are C0 and F1.
Thenm try initializing it. Also, when you set up the connect strings in QCONFIG
change the 300 baud connect string to CONNECT| . The | is translated into a CR
Do this on all the modem connect strings, like CONNECT 1200|, etc. The reason
for that is, say someone calls on at 1200 baud. The modem will return CONNECT
1200. When QBBS gets CONNECT, it will think that the caller is 300 instead of
1200. The same holds true for all other higher speeds.

I hope this helps some, but if it doesn't, give me some more info and I'll try
and help some more....

It is my understanding that the Null Modem is used only in applications where a
Modem is not used ie. connecting two computers directly via the RS232 Port. A
real modem automatically knows which is TD and RD, but in a direct connect
situation the two lines must be switched so the output from one computer goes to
the input of the other and vice verse. It must be remebered that my problem
used a modem to connect two remote computers. I can think of no application were
a Null Modem and a Modem are used

If you have switches on the your internal modem, set DTR low. If not, look at
your manual and find out how to set it to OFF. Do this in your intialization
string. Many BBS's want to control "Data Terminal Ready" (DTR), directly. You
may also have to set CD (Carrier Detect) to OFF, as well.

if you're looking for Games, Utilities ect. Two files in the Utilities Topic

I too have been having some trouble with 3 1/2 diskettes (720k variety).
I was able to finally read the diskettes with a disk utility (Take Charge!).
What it told me was that the FAT was too big and wasn't in 512 sectors anymore!
"FAT" lot of good that info did me though because I still don't know how
they got that way. If you have some sort of utility (such as Norton or PC Tools)
maybe you could get more info and "perhaps" find a fix.
Meanwhile, they probably have just developed bad sectors on track 0 in
which case they're unusable. I really doubt it's a problem of changing from a
1400 LT to a 1000 SX. Do you get the clicking sound with both drives on the 1400
LT and the drive(s) on the SX?

I know it is not a DOS problem. As usual Tandy has come up with another way of
screwing things up for there loyal followers. Don't dispair, sooner or later
they will learn. It is a definite compatibility problem. I just installed a
SL1000 for a customer with a Packard Bell CGA monitor and guess what, it did'nt
work. Tandy is IBM compatible (bullsh__)!!!!! I started with an original
color computer and worked my way up to a 3000 and then to a clone. I can't
believe Tandy still gets away with there balony.. When Tandy decides to make a
true compatible (no hole bars) they will blow the market place apart. I am
sorry I got carry away, you should call Quaid Software and explain the problem
they will help you.

Zmodem is Faassssssssssssstttttt!!!!! What I like is the "Crash Recovery"
feature. If you get half way through downloading a file and get cut off or
something, when you call back to download the file again, it picks up where
it left off instead of starting from the beginning.

I'm afraid the TRS-80 was before my limited computer experience Carri. I'm
sure someone will jump in and give you a hand. It is possible that the disk
got corrupted though. Before going through any exaustive diagnostics, I'd
ask your friend to find another Boot Disk.
