LAN             Local-Area Network. A computer and communications network
                that convers a limited geographical area, allows every node
                to communicate with every other node, and does not require a
                central node or processor.
LANACS          Local Area Network Asynchronous Connection Server. LANACS
                provides both dial-out and dial-in asynchronous
                communications through a dedicated server.
LAP             Link Access Protocol.
LAPB            Link Access Procedure Balanced.
LAPC-1          A professional sound card featuring eight-voice polyphonic
                and 128 preprogrammed sounds, that can also be modified. It
                is a creation of Roland.
LAPM            Link Access Procedure for Modems. An error control protocol
                incorporated in CCITT recommendation V.42. Like the MNP and
                HST protocols, LAPM uses cyclic redundancy checking (CRC) and
                retransmission of corrupted data (ARQ) to ensure data
                reliability.
LAT             Local Area Transport.
LATA            Local-Area Telephone Authority.
LCD             Liquid-Crystal Display.
LCR             Line Control Register.
LCSS            Local Church Software System. LCSS was a relatively complex
                dBase II application that was being sold in churches in the

LISP            LIst Processing Language. Lisp was designed for problems in

                supports the LLC functions of one or more logical links.
LM              Local Memory. In a multiprocessor system, memory a processor
                can access directly without using the interconnection network.

LRC             Longitudinal Redundancy Checking. The LRC uses all character
                bits to form a check character at both the transmitting and

LRC             Lossless Real-time Coding.
LRU             Least Recently Used. Refers to a replacement policy, e.g. in
                paging, where the system replaces the page of data the 
                program referenced least recently.
LSAP            Link Service Access Point.
LSAPI		Licensing Service Application Program[ming] Interface.
LSI             Large-Scale Integration. Characteristic of integrated
                circuits having thousands of transistors of them.
LSI-11          A microprocessor having the instruction-set architecture of
                the PDP-11; used in the CM*.
LSL             Link Support Layer.
LSR             Line Status Register.
LTM             Long-Term Memory.
LU              Logical Unit.
LV              Logical Volume.
LVM             Logical Volume Manager. LVM manages collections of diskdrives 
                in the HP-UX 10.0. It partitions drives, mirrors data for 
                redundancy, and stripes data across multiple disks for higher 
                performance.
LVQ             Learning Vector Quantizer.
LZW             Lempel-Ziv-Welsh.
