            ****IMPORTANT NOTES****

ATTENTION: NETWORK ASSOCIATES WILL DISCONTINUE
.DAT FILE UPDATES FOR THE V3.X PRODUCT SERIES
WITH THIS .DAT FILE RELEASE. NETWORK ASSOCIATES
RECOMMENDS STRONGLY THAT YOU UPGRADE YOUR
SOFTWARE TO CURRENT VERSIONS TO MAINTAIN
YOUR ANTI-VIRUS SECURITY. THE END OF SUPPORT FOR
THE V3.X PRODUCT LINE DOES NOT AFFECT SUPPORT FOR
THE V4.X PRODUCT LINE.

The 3212 .DAT files are compatible with all
Network Associates v3.x anti-virus products,
except for VirusScan* anti-virus software for
DOS versions earlier than v3.1.5. These .DAT
files will NOT work with v4.x.xx scan engines,
with v2.x or earlier product versions, or with
any version of the VShield* TSR. The .DAT files
WILL, however, work with all 3.x versions of
the VShield scanner for Windows.

To learn which engine version your software
has, choose About from the Help menu in
products that have a graphical user interface.
If you use a command-line version of Network
Associates software, the engine version number
will appear at the top of your screen whenever
you start a scan operation.

Network Associates recommends that you upgrade
to the latest version of the v3.x engine for
optimal virus detection and repair.

Beginning with last month's .DAT file release,
the file name for this release notes file has
changed from WHATSNEW.TXT to README.TXT. The
contents within the file remain the same.
This file name change will occur for all
Network Associates products.

Similarly, the license file now called
README.1ST has changed its name to LICENSE.TXT.
Please review this file for the terms of your
license to use the Network Associates products
you install.

Please send any questions or comments about
this change to tvd_documentation@nai.com.

WD1 - WHAT ARE .DAT FILES?

Virus definition, or .DAT, files contain
up-to-date virus signatures and other
information that Network Associates anti-virus
products use to protect your computer against
the thousands of computer viruses in circulation.
Network Associates releases new .DAT files
regularly to provide protection against the
approximately 300 new viruses that appear each
month. To ensure that your anti-virus software
can protect your system or network against the
latest virus threats, download and install the
latest .DAT files.

____________________________________
WE1 - WHAT IS THE 3212UPDT.EXE FILE?

This executable file minimizes the need for
you to closely manage your .DAT file updates.
It takes care of shutting down any active scan
operations, services, or other memory-resident
software components that might interfere with
your updates. It then copies the new files to
their proper locations and enables your
software to use them immediately.

_______________________
WU1 - WHICH FILE TO USE

You can use either the DAT-3212.ZIP file or the
3212UPDT.EXE file to update your anti-virus
software.

* If you want to minimize the time it takes to
download new .DAT files and you want to
control how and when you update the files,
use DAT-3212.ZIP. See "Using DAT-3212.ZIP to
Update .DAT Files" later in this file for
  details.

* If you would prefer to run an automated
routine to update your .DAT files and you
do not mind downloading a larger file to do
so, use 3212UPDT.EXE. See "Using 3212UPDT.EXE
to Update .DAT Files" later in this file for
  details.

DC1 - DOCUMENTATION

Network Associates provides each of its products
with an extensive set of documentation, which
usually consists of one or more product guides
saved in Adobe Acrobat Portable Document Format
(.PDF), and an online help system, whose form
can vary, depending on the platform on which the
product runs.

Acrobat .PDF files are flexible online documents
that contain hyperlinks, outlines and other aids
for easy navigation and information retrieval.
You can also install an Acrobat plug-in file
that allows you to read .PDF documents from
within your web browser while online. Copies
of the product documentation come with the
product CD-ROM or are available on the Network
Associates website at:

ftp://ftp.nai.com/pub/manuals/total_virus_defense

A copy of the latest version of the free Acrobat
Reader also comes with the product CD-ROM, or
you can download the latest English-language
version from the Network Associates FTP site at:

ftp://ftp.nai.com/pub/manuals/acrobat_reader

To download other Acrobat Reader versions, visit
the Adobe website at:

http://www.adobe.com/prodindex/acrobat/readstep.html

IMPORTANT: Most Network Associates TVD product
           documentation produced during and
           after September 1999 requires the
use of Adobe Acrobat Reader v4.0.
           Exceptions include documentation for
products that run on Windows 3.1x
systems and products that run on
           OS/2 systems. The most current
           Acrobat Reader versions available
           for these platforms are v3.x
           versions.

IN1 - INSTALLATION

* PREPARING TO INSTALL .DAT FILES *

Network Associates stores .DAT file updates for
the v3.x product series in a compressed format
to reduce transmission time, and makes the
updates available in two formats: as an
executable file that includes a setup feature;
and as a .ZIP archive that you can extract and
install yourself. These files are:

* 3212UPDT.EXE. Download this package to
   update most Network Associates anti-virus
   software, including all VirusScan software
versions except the VirusScan Command Line
application and the VirusScan for UNIX
   application. Visit the Network Associates
   website at:

   http://www.nai.com/asp_set/download/dats/mcafee_3x.asp

* DAT-3212.ZIP. Download this package to
   update the VirusScan Command Line
application and the VirusScan for UNIX
   application. Visit the Network Associates
   website at:

   http://www.nai.com/asp_set/download/dats/mcafee_3x.asp

* USING 3212UPDT.EXE TO UPDATE .DAT FILES *

To use the .DAT file update with its own Setup
feature, create a temporary directory on your
hard disk, then copy the file 3212UPDT.EXE to
that directory. Next, type 3212UPDT.EXE either
from a command line or from the Run dialog box
in Windows to start Setup.

Setup will unload Network Associates memory-
resident software or stop NT services that use
your current .DAT files before it copies
updated .DAT files to the appropriate program
directories. Setup will then restart the
software components needed to continue scan
operations with your updated .DAT files.

NOTE: 3212UPDT.EXE does NOT support VirusScan
      Command Line software.

* USING DAT-3212.ZIP TO UPDATE .DAT FILES *

Some Network Associates anti-virus products,
such as VirusScan Command Line anti-virus
software and VirusScan software for UNIX,
cannot use the executable version of the
.DAT file update. Instead, you must copy
.DAT file updates directly to the product
directory.

To do so, follow these steps:

1. Create a temporary directory on your
hard disk, then copy the .DAT file .ZIP
archive that you downloaded to that
   directory.

2. Unload the VShield* TSR software from
memory, if your anti-virus software has
a VShield version and you have it running.
To do so, type VSHIELD /REMOVE at the
command-line prompt. This step is not
necessary if you have not started the
VShield scanner or if your anti-virus
software does not include a background or
   on-access scanner.

3. Back up or rename the existing .DAT files
stored in the program directory for your
   anti-virus software. See "Primary Program
Files for Virus Definitions" later in this
file for a complete .DAT file list.

4. Use WinZip, PKUnzip, or a similar utility
to open the .ZIP archive and extract the
updated .DAT files. You can save the
extracted files directly to the program
   directory for your anti-virus software.
Allow the updated files to overwrite the
   existing .DAT files.

5. Copy the new .DAT files to the program
directory for the software you want to
update. Allow the new files to replace
   the existing files.

6. Restart the VShield TSR, if your anti-virus
software includes a VShield component, to
enable background or on-access scanning. To
do so, type VSHIELD, followed by the scanning
options you want to use, at the command-line
   prompt.

* PRIMARY PROGRAM FILES FOR VIRUS DEFINITIONS *

Files located in the installation directory:
============================================

CLEAN.DAT = Data file for virus cleaning
POLYSCAN.DAT = Data file for advanced
                    polymorphic virus detection
NAMES.DAT = Data file for virus names
SCAN.DAT = Data file for virus scanning
INTERNET.DAT = Data file to detect hostile
                    Java/ActiveX objects

* TESTING YOUR INSTALLATION *

The EICAR Standard AntiVirus Test File is a
combined effort by anti-virus vendors
throughout the world to implement one
standard by which customers can verify their
anti-virus installations.

To test your installation, copy the following
line into its own file, then save the file
with the name EICAR.COM.

X5O!P%@AP[4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*

The file size will be 68 or 70 bytes.

Next, start your anti-virus software and allow
it to scan the directory that contains
EICAR.COM. When your software scans this file,
it will report finding the EICAR test file.

Note that this file is NOT A VIRUS. Delete the
file when you have finished testing your
installation to avoid alarming unsuspecting
users.

KN1 - KNOWN ISSUES

1. If you have already used VirusScan v3.x
anti-virus software for Windows 3.1x to
detect a virus or clean an infected file,
you might not be able to load the Virus
List into memory. Viewing the Virus List
more than once might also cause your
system to run out of memory.

2. Because of memory limitations, these .DAT
file versions will not work with versions
of VirusScan anti-virus software for DOS
    earlier than v3.1.5. Network Associates
recommends that you upgrade your copy of
VirusScan anti-virus software for DOS to
    the current version.

3. If you have more than 20 viruses on your
    system, VirusScan v3.1.0 anti-virus
software for Windows 3.1x might display
the error message "Unable to allocate
memory" during a scan operation. Network
    Associates recommends that you upgrade
your VirusScan software to the current
version in order to avoid this issue.

DV1 - NEW VIRUSES DETECTED AND REMOVED

* NEW VIRUSES DETECTED *

The 3212 .DAT files detect these 24 new viruses:

ASSILEM.D
ASTIA.D
BABLAS.C

NOTE: If your anti-virus software detects a
virus with the message NEED V4 UPGRADE
in its name, you MUST upgrade your anti-
virus product to v4.0.1 or later in order
to correctly detect and completely remove
      the infection.

      Although v3.x anti-virus products will
usually detect these viruses to some
      degree, limitations in v3.x scanning
      technology prevent your software from
      completely detecting and removing more
complex viruses. The older scan engines
      can detect some complex polymorphic
viruses in memory, for example, but
cannot detect them in infected files.

* NEW VIRUSES REMOVED *

The 3212 .DAT files remove the 15 new
viruses shown in the list below. Network
Associates software removes a virus either
by removing the infecting virus code from
files or by removing the file from your
computer.

UV1 - UNDERSTANDING VIRUS NAMES

Network Associates anti-virus software typically
follows industry-wide naming conventions to
identify the viruses that it detects and cleans.
Occasionally, some virus names deviate from
strict industry standards.

The first virus with a given set of
characteristics that mark it as a distinctly
new entity receives a "family" name. Virus
researchers draw the family name from some
identifying quirk in the virus--a text string,
perhaps, or a payload effect.

Some family names come from the virus "kit"
or software package that the author used to
create the virus. Virus authors have created
a number of these virus creation packages and
made them widely available.

A family name can also include a numeric string
that designates the byte size of the virus.
Researchers use this name as a convenient
shorthand to distinguish among very closely
allied virus variants.

Names for variants within a virus family consist
of the family name and a suffix--<VIRUS>.A, for
example. The suffix designations continue in
alphabetical order until they reach .Z. At that
point, they begin again with .AA and continue
until they reach .AZ. Still later variants
receive the suffix .BA through .BZ, and so
forth, until the suffix designations reach .ZZ.
If yet another variant appears after that, it
would get the suffix .AAA.

As new virus strains appeared, industry naming
conventions evolved to include more information.
Some names, for instance, include prefixes that
identify the type of file that the virus
infects or the platform on which it can run.
Viruses that infect DOS executables do not
receive a prefix. Network Associates virus
names can include these prefixes:

 A97M/ Macro virus. Infects Microsoft
               Access 97 files
 O97M/ Macro virus. Infects Microsoft
               Office files

               Basic scripts
 W32/ File-infector or boot-sector
               virus. Runs in 32-bit Windows
               environments (Windows 95,
               Windows 98 or Windows NT)
 Win95/ File-infector or boot-sector
virus. Runs in Windows 95 and
               Windows 98 environments
