			     Birthday Monitor

This program was written to help me remember birthdays and anniversaries, but maybe you can find other uses for it.

The setup program installs Birthdbf.exe and Birthdaz.exe in the same directory. (They must always be in the same directory for Birthdaz.exe to work properly.) Birthdbf.exe creates a data file (Birthdaz.dbf) in this directory, which is read by Birthdaz.exe. I STRONGLY urge that you use the data entry program "Birthdbf.exe" to make any changes or deletions, to avoid any data errors causing you to loose your data!

				Windows 3.1

Each time you start Windows, any birthdays that you have entered that are within 7 days of the date stored in the system cmos, will be displayed in a message box. Press the "Enter" key or click the "Ok" button to continue. The program unloads itself from memory. If you choose not to run "Birthdaz.exe" each time you boot up your computer, you may put it in any group you please and access it by double-clicking its icon. (Needless to say, if no birthdays fall within 7 days of the system date, no message will be displayed and the program will terminate and unload itself from memory without any intervention.)

				Windows 95
Most of the instructions of Windows 3.1 also apply to Windows 95 with a few changes. If you run Birthdaz.exe from the "start up" group, at the completion of the start up of Windows 95, you will find a "Birthday" Item in the Task Bar, but only if there is a birthday within 7 days.

				Commands:

ADD - adds a record to the data file
DELETE - deletes a record from the data file.
UNDELETE - cancels the "delete" action.
RESET - ends the record search and returns display to "add record" mode.
CLEAR - clears all the fields in the display.
CHECK - Allows you to check for birthdays from the data entry program and print the results.
SAVE - saves an edited record unless you "Click" the "UNDO" button. To change a record, first find the record, then make the desired changes, then "click" the SAVE button to save the changes. When you exit the program, you will be asked if you wish to save the changes you have made. "Click" YES to save your changes
UNDO - returns an "edited" record to its original values.
EXIT - exits the program and saves any changes.
LIST - lists all enteries containing the character(s) in the "text" box by the "option" box that is "checked".
EDIT - begins the search process by choosing the string in the box next to the "find" option boxes. If nothing has been entered, then all of the records will be displayed in "Search" screen. If field next to the "option" button contains data, then the data that is in the box next becomes the "searched for" string. To search for "edited" or "deleted" records, check the appropriate "option" button, and then "click" EDIT and choose the record you wish to change.

Birthdbf.exe creates a backup data file "Birthdaz.bac" for emergencies. If you lose your data file, this file can be renamed "Birthdaz.dbf" and is your most recent record of data. If you don't wish to rename it, just delete the original data file "Birthdaz.dbf" and run the program. It will restore your data to its most recent form automaticly. Before you delete "Birthdaz.dbf", be sure "Birthdaz.bac" is still in the directory.

			Just a couple of notes.

First, if you install the program correctly and run "Birthdbf.exe" to enter your data and then run "Birthdaz.exe" to watch it work and nothing happens, it may be that none of the events has a date within 7 days of the date in your system. To check, either change the system clock to a date within 7 days of a known event and run "Birthdaz.exe" again, or enter some "test" data with dates within the next 7 days and try it again. You can delete these records later.
Second, if you enter events pertaining to yourself and don't like the way the messages read, try putting a single "space" in the "name" field, and nothing in the relationship field. The "name" field cannot be left blank, but a "space" is acceptable.
And one more thing. The unregistered version of "Birthday Monitor" is designed for 50 or fewer records. I felt that should be enough for a trial run. The registered version of "Birthday Monitor" has a 2500 record limit. I have not "maxed" it out to see if that many records caused any problems, but in theory, it shouldn't. (I have had over 250 records without any problems.)

Please understand, while I have used this program on my system, and many of my friends have used it on their systems, without any problems, I have no way of knowing what it might do on yours. Please use it at your own risk. (I have found in won't run on Windows 3.0)

Birthday Monitor is a shareware program. The price for it is $10 (US). If you try my program and don't find it of value to you, just delete it and don't pay for it. If, agter 90 days, you find it a program that you wish to keep, simply send $10 (US), along with your name, address and e-mail address, to,
