Greg,

A friend of mine has a Tandy 1000rl and says that Radio Shack
tells him there are no programs available for the computer (this
after having the machine repaired at considerable cost).

Could you point me out to some source of programs for this
machine? I would appreciate it if you would e-mail rather than
posting your reply to the forum, since I only joined to get info
for this friend.

Thanks in advance.

Most DOS programs will run fine on the 1000RL. Any version of DOS
will run on it, up to PC DOS 7.0. Just make sure the software
comes on low-density, 3.5" 720 Kb disks, unless you have added an
external 5.25" floppy drive.

Here's a list of good, serious applications that will run fine on
the RL:

Corel WordPerfect 5.1+ for DOS (still being sold; a very good
word processor; GO WPDOS)

WordStar 7.0D for DOS (another word processor, no longer sold; GO
WORDSTAR)

Lotus 1-2-3 2.4 for DOS (spreadsheet, no longer sold; GO LOTUS)

dBase III Plus for DOS (database, no longer sold?; GO DBASE)

Microsoft Works 3.0 for DOS (word
proc/spreadsheet/database/&more; no longer sold; GO MSDESK)

etc. etc. Most of these require a hard disk to run. Not to
mention a whole lot of good shareware stuff available right here
on CIS. Try the IBMSYS and IBMAPP to start.

You are right about there being a bunch of software out there. I
have had boxes of older stuff that I keep accumulating and
passing on to others.

I find that an old XT will run Lotus 2.3, but has problems with
the icons in 2.4. Have you found the same.

Also MSWorks 3.0-have only seen it once-but have found (and
already passed on) several copies of Works 2.0.

Without a hard drive, the choices are a lot more limited, but
there are still programs out there. Right now I have two copies
of Lotus 2.2, two copies of WP5.0, one copy of Lotus 2.0 and a
couple of "no name" programs that run off floppies. Not very
beautiful, but they serve their purpose.

My source for these fossils? Garage sales-I buy the whole box of
old stuff and sort it out later, Flea Markets, Guys who have been
fixing computers for years and don't want to deal with the old
crap and the junk tables at computer fairs.

One word of advice-if you get used stuff, make sure it is the
original disks or you can run into copyright violations and USE
AN ANTIVIRUS!!!!! You don't know where those disks have been for
the past 10 years or so.
