Hello,

I have a Tandy 4000 PC. I've been trying to upgrade the graphics
from EGA to VGA, but I can't seem to get very far. I have a VGM
300 monitor with a 15 pin connector. I purchased an EasyVGA card
from SIIG, and tried many, many times to install it, but I get
absolutely nothing on my screen. The setup program on the Tandy
utilities diskette doesn't have an option for VGA. I tried EGA.
 That did nothing.

Has anyone ever successfully upgraded a Tandy 4000 from EGA to
VGA???

If so, please clue me in on the particulars of this process.
Specifically what video board did you use? And what did you have
to go through to get it configured?

Thanx,
Don Wright

Don when you set the bios to EGA it just looks for a card at
that address and the video bios takes over from there. I upgraded
my 4000 to VGA with an old Pine Technologies card from the junk
pile at a computer shop. I bought an old IBM 8513 monitor and
connected it to the card and it worked fine. I also installed
another meg of ram (2 megs total) and installed Windows 3.1. I
downloaded drivers for the card from the internet to get 256
colors and every thing works well. Are you sure both the card
and the monitor are working correctly. I hope this helps. I have
also made some other upgrades to the old 4000. If your are
interested let me know.

Tim,

Thanx for the info. I think my problem may be an incompatible
board. I've little experience with PC hardware, but I've now
learned that the bus is ISA for the 4000. Many video adapters
sold today are PCI compatible, and although the one I tried was
not labled, I suspect it was PCI.

I tried searching the internet for Pine Technologies, but didn't
come up with much. Any idea if that board is still available? I
am interested in other upgrades you've done to your machine. If
you'd like to contact me via e-mail, please send to suendonw@
tristate.pgh.net (my home), rather than this adress (work).

thanx,
Don

You definitely need an ISA-bus video card. They're about $25 or
$30 at Fry's.

Once you put in the card, you'll have VGA.

Don't know about Don, but I have a 4000 as well and am
interested in what upgrades you've made in the unit.

John:
I have installed a CYRIX 486 DLC 16/32 upgrade processor. The
only problem I had with the upgrade was that it will not
recognize a single bank of memory. You have to run either
2megs(8-256K chips) or 8megs(8-1meg chips). I also use aGsi-18 HD
controller with an onboard bios and a 512k svga video card.
Windows 3.1 runs great. Have fun!
