Hi,

I have a Tandy Sensation 25 MHz i486 SX with a 107 MB SmartDrive

(IDE) hard drive.
I am needing more hard drive space so I was trying to decide the
best
way to go about upgrading.
I have contacted several people who say they will not work on
Tandy
computers, so now I am considering doing the job myself.
I was thinking of buying a Western Digital 2.5 gigabyte
harddrive
to use as the replacement.
Would that be a good choice?
Also what would any potential problems/complications be that I
might
get prepared for.
Is replacing a hard drive a fairly easy job?

Thanks,
David Zanchettin

David,

I tuned in here tonight to see if I could get help for a problem
with my Tandy 486...was appalled to see your message had been on
here two months with no reply.

Just wanted to tell you I replaced (and later added a second)
hard drive to my Tandy 486 with no problems...I did talk to a
knowledgeable friend but in the end could've followed the
directions in my Western Digital box that came with the new
drive. Bottm line: if you can use a screwdriver and know how to
be careful around static electricity you can do it yourself.

If you have a spare bay I recommend adding a big drive vice
replacing your small one for your first attenpt. You'll simply
open your case after spraying some static guard and keeping
yourself grounded, move ajumper on two pins on your old drive,
plug in one or two cables on the new drive and set it's jumper,
bolt everythiong back up. You will need to format the new drive
and use a program like OnTrack Disk Manager (comes with the new
drive) so your computer (if not using Windows 95/OS2) will
recognize the big drive.

Good Luck.

For some reason, this section isn't labled on my screen but it
seems to be hardware related so I'll give it a shot.

I've been looking for a motherboard that is narrower then the
standard 8.5 inches. Today I found a tandy motherboard in a
second hand store The CPU is a 386 SX-20 and it has PS/2 syle
mouse and keyboard ports. A video, serial, parellel, IDE and
floppy are built into the motherboard. The motherboard appears
to have been designed to work with a riser board for any
expansion cards.

Part number is 1700444-8 or 8709994. The board is stamped Tandy
1990.

The power connector has nine pins instead of the 12 pins I'm used
to. Does anyone have information on what voltage each pin is?
What was this motherboard used in originally?

Thanks, Morgan
