Sorry for cross-posting of the following msg that I first posted
in Tandy 100 Forum, but this forum seems a closer match (although
zip mention of a Tandy 1500 anywhere here that I've found, so
far):

I've tentatively agreed to buy a friend's Tandy 1500 laptop for
$100, but can't find where to check on CIS for more info on this
model, and have no idea whether that's a great or stupid deal.
Second complicating factor is that he bought it in London so it's
set up to use 220 current; whereas I'm in the U.S., and it's
taken calls or visits to no fewer than =5= Radio Shack stores to
find anyone who even =might= know what I need. Apparently the
gizmo costs $32 US, plus another $13 for manual and, if I wanted
to replace the bum or dead battery, $79 on top of that. All I
want it for is to do wordprocessing (Xywrite or old WordPerfect
4.2 ought to work) and log on for e-mail. It does have a modem,
but he's not sure what speed (9600, he thinks). One consideration
there is that Tapcis may not work on CIS much longer because of
the software conversion.

Any advice, or can someone please point me in the right direction
to find authoratative info quickly, please? Need to let him know
yea or nay soonest.

jb

Except for the adapter/charger, the laptop should be independent
of power source, so if you by an adapter/charger in the U.S. for
110V service, that should work. A new battery, if replacement is
required, may also be available from third party suppliers, who
might have a lower price than from Tandy. I'd check further on
the modem speed, perhaps by opening the case and looking at the
modem. Perhaps someone in the Forum who has experience with a
1500 can supply more definitive information.

Judith, the latest version of tapcis may not be compatible with
the 1500 lap top, since tapcis now requires a 386 or better
machine to operate. However there are many dos based word
processing programs that will run on the 1500. I hope that this
will help you with your decision.

Aha, that explains why the guy said he couldn't get Tapcis 6.0 to
work, even though it used to work. I still use Tapcis 5.43, so
let's hope that works. Thanks for your help, Robert.

P.S. So that means the 1500 is a 286, right?

Hi Judith, (I left a duplicate of this message on the "100"
forum for you.)

<< I've tentatively agreed to buy a friend's Tandy 1500 laptop
for $100, but can't find where to check on CIS for << more info
on this model, and have no idea whether that's a great or stupid
deal.
For what it's worth I just bought one today with a 20MB HD for
$99.00, and I LOVE it (but I don't have the 220 volt model.) For
years I ran an old Sharp PC4500 (a twin 720K floppy machine with
no HD) just to type ASCII text files on when my kids would become
too noisy to work at home. I put together a collection of PD
utilities over the years that enabled me to do almost every
common function on that machine that I do using Word 6.0 on my
486DX120 desktop. However, this includes using a copy of the
Boxer Text Editor by David Hamel, which is far and away one of
the most brilliantly written pieces of software that you will
ever see. You might even want to check out a shareware copy of
Boxer yourself. GO PCVENI and look in the Boxer section.
(Gadzooks! It sounds like I work for Boxer doesn't it? HHHmmm..
Maybe I should, I could use the job!) <g>

Hope this helps,

Charles

PS The 1500 I have is definately not a 286. It's more like an
8088.

Hi again Judith,

If you do purchase the machine, and it has a manual with it, I
would gladly pay you for a photocopy of the manual and enough to
cover the postage and your trouble. There's a few buttons and
keys on it that I've no idea at all what they are for. If you
can do this please let me know by e-mail. (I would of course
send you the money prior to your sending me the copy of the
manual.)

Keep a grin,

Charles
