Hello,
    I have a 3100 (model 10) which i have upgraded to 12mb memory
by adding two more 4mb simms. A friend gave me an 8mb simm from
his pentium system when he purchased more memory. The new chip
is also 72 pin but I believe it is at 60ns since the serial
number has a -6 at the end. I see nothing on the chip regarding
32 or 36 bit. I do see a manufacturers name (smart) and the date
of 1994.
When i put the new simm in, i place it in the first bank and
moved the existing 4mb simm to the last bank, as the manual said
20mb was available in an 8,4,4,4 combo. On start up the machine
locked before I even got the BIOS message, no memory count etc.
I also tried moving the new chip to the last bank and replacing
the 4mb simm in the first bank. This gave me the BIOS message
but the machine again locked up before DOS was started. What is
causing this? I removed the new chip and put everything back
like it was and things are back to normal.
I would like to use the additional memory since it was free. The
manual says the system will take either 32 or 36 bit simms. Is
there a parity check? How do I access the BIOS to disable this?

    Any help would be appreciated,
Thanks, Bob

You might check the manaul to see what memory configurations are
allowed. It's usually not possible to mix freely, but only to
use certain combinations of chips to give allowed amounts of
total RAM.
