Anybody know anything about the NEC V20 replacement processor
chip for the 8088 in a Tandy 1000EX? Would this increase download
speeds. Claims 5-50% faster processing speed at same mHz.

Also, I notice my downloads are no faster at 9600 bps than at
2400. ?????

The NEC V20 will provide about 5% faster operation, probably not
enough to make the change (also, some CPU's are soldered in and
not easy to change). 9600 bps downloads are usually much faster
than at 2400 bps; if not for you, then something is wrong and you
are not actually getting 9600 bps operation.

I noticed several replies to your questions about internet
access. Your computer probably uses an 8250 UART, and could never
handle more than 9600 bps without many errors that would greatly
decrease throughput. A 16550 UART or equivalent is needed for
speeds above 9600 bps. You could get one in an internal modem is
you could use that. I think Robert described a way to rig a slot
for the EX, into which you could put an internal. However, I
agree with several of the replies that a used computer upgrade
would probably be most sensible. Also, files on the internet tend
to be large, and a HD is almost a necessity. They are going
fairly cheaply these days, since multi-GB modems have become
common. Getting a HD in used computer would be almost like
getting it free.

Thanks, Horace, for your usual good response.

Yes, my UART is an 8250. I spoke to Tandy Ft. Worth and they said
my
processor just won't run any faster at 9600 than at 2400 and that
is
why downloads are no faster, and I am losing characters in the
display. I believe the 1000EX runs around 7.5 mHz. I'm not
certain
what that means, actually; bits per cycle per second? (If I knew,
then
maybe I could understand why 9600 bps doesn't square with it.)

I did look at used systems and will continue to. All I found was
high
priced junk sold "as is", cannibalized (HD's and modems pulled),
no
keyboards, at $200 to $400. This is a tough area to find bargains
in
anything.

One thing I did was to set up a Vdisk so I didn't have to go
through
mechanical action to download. This speeded up things by about
25%.

Bryan.

Bryan, I recently purchased via the classified ads here on
compuserve a lugable compaq 386 computer for $129.00 from a place
in utah. It came with a small hard drive, and a 5 1/4 inch
floppy drive. I had laying around a 3 inch floppy drive, and
thru the classified, I found a 185 meg hard drive for under
$100.00. I had my son replace the hard drive and the floppy
drive, and now he is using this computer in the lab at the
university. Its a great fall back for him if he has problems
with his main computer, or if he needs to have a computer handy
for his work where-ever he is at.

The place that I bought the computer from, is a part time
business. I think the rest of the time is spent on the ski
slopes... Company name is L&K Trading. Their Compuserve
address is 70733,232. And their phone number is (801) 229-1800.
Maybe you would like to give them a call. The company is ok,
even if they seem a little slow to deliver at times.

Just to let you know I gave in and got a new Pentium 120 system,
16 meg, 1 gig HD, CD-ROM, Wind 95, modem, etc. It's a US Tech
Vision (hope it's good), CTX SVGA monitor, $1048 total. Just
couldn't find anything decent used and the prices were not too
much below the new price I paid on the combo. It seems to do a
good job, 'cept it's sooooooooo slooooooow on CS and AOL compared
to what I'm used to with the ancient Tandy Terminal (which I'm
using at the moment...to save time!) The Tandy just didn't do
very well with the WWW, although I could access it. I'd like to
write a faster CS program that would run on Windows, but I
suppose that would take me a few years! We'll see what happens.

Great, I am sure that you will enjoy your new machine. Its going
to be a while before I can really upgrade. Too many kids in
school is the problem. But my Tandy 3200, which is a 486sx seems
to be quite adequate for now.

I think you made a good choice. Dunno why your system should be
so slow on CS and AOL. You might look into that to see whether
it can be corrected; I'd think you could.

The more I talk to others, it seems the graphics and site
accessing system with non-DOS programs just runs slow. I am using
Windows HyperTerminal for CS part ofthe time in a DOS-ish mode so
I can get even faster action with the Pentium than the 1000Ex (if
you can imagine that!)

I prefer to use DOS programs when possible. However, I use
Windows programs on the internet and find no lack of speed there.
Extensive graphics do take more time - a waste in my opinion in
most cases.
