program anymore how would I get out of the memory? or would I just leave it

I'm not sure if there's a HOT KEY combo tha't remove it. Does it say anything
in the DOCS about it? If not, then you'de either have to reboot or download
one of our utilties for removeing TSR programs. The file "The TSR Utilities"
in the Utility Topic of the Database, does just that.

The 1701 is a controller error, Mike. This could mean several things. First,
check to see that the card has not worked it way loose in the expansion slot.
This will cause such an error. If the card will still not function, try to
reformat the drive (low-level, FDISK and DOS Format).

If you still have problems - when does your warranty expire?

56:0032 DRIVE OVERFLOW. The drive light stayed d on and nothing seemed to
happen. Also when I copied the PKX361.exe to a second disk, the bytes free
message after a dir was less than the original. Oh! what have I done now?

Sounds like you got a truncated ( cutoff ) file Mike. What you should do
if you don't have a hard disk is.... Run your Deskmate from drive A. Put
an empty formatted disk in drive B. When you receive the OK begin your
download prompt from DELPHI, bring up XMATE and when prompted for a filename,
type : B:\PKX361.EXE. That will send the file to drive B which is a whopping
360K bytes of emptyness, screaming for a file. Then, after you log off, go
to drive B and type PKX361. It sounds like the disk might have filled up
during the download. If you are using floppy drives only, always put an
empty formatted disk in drive B before logging on and, put the B:\ before
the filename to be downloaded.

Your 3/4s of the way home Mike,

It sounds as if your modem may not have very good filtering. The garbage you
experience is probably "line-noise". The best course of action would be to sell
you present modem and get a 2400 bps. These have better filtering due to having
to handle the higher baud rates. They (the 2400 bps modems) have dropped
substantially, in price. I have seen them for as little as $69.

This is assuming that you do not have 2400 baud modem, already. If you do, it is
faulty.

What's probably happening is the two HD controllers are clashing. You will
probably have to set the jumper pin on the hard card to D1. It should
be on D0 now. Does the 3000HL have an AT Setup program like most AT
machines? If so, you'll have to go in and configure the CMOS for 2 drives.

I think MISAL has or had a 3000HL. If so, you'll be hearing from him.

The jumper I'm talking about is on the Hard drive itself, not the controller.

Hello Reggie!! I'am back again. Thanks for the help, every thing with the
PKX361 is O.K.. I think I found the trouble. I reformatted the disk that I had
downloaded to and there was a big bad sector in it, when I used a new
diskeverything was O.K. Next problem, I downloaded qmodem 4.0 I thought. I
guess you have to download all five of the files seperately am I right? I
downloaded qm40dsk1.arc and unpacked it, and there were only a few files in
there. how do I get to the second one which I guess is qm40dsk2. and does it
really take so long? The first one took over 50 minutes. That would mean
another couple of hours downloading. I have 1200 baud rate. I would appericate
any hint as how to attack this new problem. Or do I have to start from the
begining again. I hope I don't cause you to turn gray Reggie. Mike

Gray! Noo Mike, I'm BALD < Grin >. Qmodem is 5 files long. To get the
next file, you would READ the file like you did before but, when it
gives you the Action prompt, you'de type XD 2, next time XD 3 ect. until
you have all 5. My suggestion to you is, download PCPLUSTD as it's only
one file I think. That way, you'll have a complete program. Then, once you've
gotten the swing of it, you can always download the rest of Qmodem a file
a week or whatever. Also, PCPLUS will be a little easier on you being you
don't have a hard drive. I suggest you ask Santa or the Tooth Fairy for
a Hard drive for your next wish. Also, get a 2400 baud modem. They are cheap,
the circuitry is better than the 1200s and, DELPHI charges the same for
2400 as they do for 1200.

If your friend has a hard disk in the 3000HL already, that means he has a
controller card installed also. The hardcard is merely another controller card

disk controllers, I would think. Sort of like putting two EGA cards in and
expecting to have two different displays of the same type going.

Hello John! About the Microsoft reply, they need more info about how and in
which condition this happends. Unfortunately, I can't keep restoring my disk
until I find what's causing it. I'm patient but not that much!!!

I haven't used much the graphics package but I do know that QC2 doesn't detect
the presence of the built-in graphic circuitry of the Tandy 1000. If you bypass
the logic test of _setvideomode() function, everything seems to work as
expected. I beleive you know that. On the other hand, I don't understand why
other C compiler's graphics library don't have this problem. I also have Power C
from MIX Software (at the ridiculous $19.00 price) and yet, it is better than
Quick C, it even accepts the Tandy 1000 extra video modes (which are the same as
the PC Jr). Turbo C also has no problems with the video, other people in this
FOrum can tell you that.

I have used Quick C 1.01 for some times and, despite the publicity, I found it
to be faster than Quick C 2.0. Indeed, QC 2.0 compiles faster but it always
links to the disk while QC 1.01 can link in memory if you have the proper quick
library (I built one with ALL external references). Thus, so far, I am less
interested to have a working version of QC 2.0. May be later when things clears
up!

I would like to have your opinion on that.

You could change your clock speed by using a faster (or adjustable) crystal. The
problem with that is you may find that this seems to work just fine - until one
day all hell breaks loose. I wouldn't touch the wait states, you are really
getting into the guts (architecture) and you will find that it causes many
interrupt errors.

If you do decide to change the crystal - put a heat sync on the CPU.

That message usually means your Telenet node is at it's capacity and or,
that Delphi is. Qmodem is basically the same as PcPlus. I just figure that
with you not having a Hard drive yet, and Qmodem being 5 files in it's
entirety, that it would be easier and cheaper for you at this time to
download one file with all the goodies and start from there. They both
have the same look and, the keystrokes are almost the same. If you master

I'm afraid you've got the wrong idea. PcPlus is just as fancy as Qmodem.
Like I said, one really doesn't have anything that the other doesn't have.

It's just that PcPlusTD is bundled with the DOC file, some sample scripts,
and doesn't have a lot of overlay files that Qmodem has. Don't think you're
getting any less quality in PcPlus. On the contrary, many consider Procomm
to be the finest available.

It IS the program that I use. I've tried most of them and I don't find
anything in the others that the big P doesn't have. At least any features
that I need.

format will destroy all data as you mentioned.

     Interleave Factor
     From: FIDUCIARY To: ALL

I recently downloaded the arced program called "HDTESTS" from the PC Compatible

three. The interleave factor test suggest a factor a four for my computer. I
have a Tandy 1000EX with a 32meg hard-drive from Discount Computer Supply. I
used HSECT included in the Tandy Dos 3.2 and it apparently made the interleave
factor 3 on my drive. This means that it is running the slowest possible on my
system. I noticed a re-format utility in "HDTES" that claims to reformat the
drive and change the interleave factor without destroying the data. It says
that it read each track and then re-formats it and redeposits the data back onto
the re-formated track. To make a short story long, I would like to k now if
anyone has tryed this and how safe is it?

RE: Interleave Factor (Re: Msg 14210)

The optimum interleave on SX and EX drives is 4. If I were you, I'd backup
all the files with DOS's Backup.Com. Then run HSECT and when you get to the
Interleave 3 part, type 4. You can use the HDTESTS program. I ran it on my
SX. I had no problems with it but, there's something I like about laying
down a fresh format via DEBUG or HSECT that 3rd party software just doesn't
give me. It's like I KNOW it's done properly and don't have to guess. I
low-level about every 6 months just in case some of those sectors might be
thinking about getting unreadable.

Of course, if you have Fastback or PcTools' Backup program, or anything
other than the DOS BACKUP and RESTORE Utilities, by all means USE those
instead.

I have a 1000 SL with 640K too. You can increase your memory by lowering your

use the arrow keys to get to and change your video size. Doing this helps but I
don't know about g etting the total 640K. I asked one Computer Store (Radio
Shack) but they couldn't tell me either about getting the full 640K. The makers

extract the drive from the card is not the answer. Something is really strange

Perhaps you just have a lemon - any way to return it?

Whether you have 8 or 9 chips has no bearing on how much memory you have. The
ninth bit in IBM machines is merely a parity bit; it does not increase the
amount of memory you have.

The reason you can't get 640K total is that Tandy uses part of that contiguous
memory for the video while everyone else uses separate memory on the video
board. The reason it shows even less memory available is that COMMAND.COM uses
50K+ and that is not, therefore, available memory!

I have an external disk drive from the Tandy TRS80 Model I that I took downabout
two years ago. It was in working order then. I've put an ad in classified for
it, but don't know if it's worth anyone's time/trouble. Can someone use it in
an existing setup, or should I pitch it as being out-dated? (I'm looking for
information, not a buyer, from Forum readers.) Thanks. Marj

I'm trying to decide upon a VGA card for my Tandy 1000TX. It would seem
that a card that handles 8 or 16 bit slots would be the wiser choice since I may
purchase a machine with the 16 bit slots in the future. I know the Orchid
ProDesigner series have this feature but I am not certain if they will fit in
the TX slots. Are they a full size card? Are there other VGA cards that handle 8
or 16 bit slots?

I must say that the Tandy Users Group forum has been a Godsend for me since
I don't know a lot of Tandy users in my area yet.

                       Thanks So Much.

All the files are over in the PC Compatibles section. Once over there,
type DA to get into the Databases. Then type PCM (ENTER) and then
READ to get a description of last months files. To download you would
then type XD for XMODEM DOWNLOAD. This is assuming your communications
program has Xmodem. I guess you're using Deskmate's Telecom. Follow
the prompts and when you see OK! receive, start your program's Xmodem
download. Make sure you have a freshly formatted disk or at least enough
room on your disk to receive the files. Each file has the size listed.

For more help on this or getting around, go to the General Topic of the
Database and do a SEARCH for HELP. Download ARCHELP, DOWNLOAD help and,
you will also need PKX361.EXE found in the Utilities Topic for decompressing
the files you download.

Bob Jack's member name is BJ85. All of the keys have a description on
the Help screen (ALT Z). DOS gateway is just a shell to DOS. Most of
the questions you have, is just getting to know how to use MSDOS.
Procomm or any other Comm. program will tell you this key is DOS GATEWAY,
or this one is ECHO TOGGLE and they assume the user has a working knowledge
of DOS. The program gives you everything you need to get up and running.

The only things the testdrive version that you have leaves out, are some
of the SCRIPTING language commands. They aren't necessary to get the
program running and they feel if you want to get that
involved then you must like what you see and should purchase the product.
Printer Toggle is ALT L and if you press ALT Z, you will see each key
and the function it does. You should print the DOC file out and read and
experiment at the same time. Also, get yourself a good DOS book and
you'll be off and running.

No Vampire SIGs that I know about Jeff. The reason I thought the price
might not be too bad on the motherboard is: The first computer I got was
an EX. I couldn't get the printer to work and, it turned out to be the MB.

When I got it back, the slip said "replaced main logic board" and cost was
$69.00. However, I was still in warranty and it cost 000. Ever since, I've
harbored the thought that for some reason, they priced their MBs at a VERY
reasonable price or, goofed in the billing.

Maybe it was the latter

defining users and setting passwords and two files named PCPLUS.USR &

2400 Baud modem. The GRID has a 1.44 MB 3 1/2 floppy and a 20MB hard drive and
what a difference! I'm not so hung up on the 1.44 MB because the diskettes are
kinda hard to come by, but storage, ease of use and no bent outta shape
diskettes make it real attractive. I know that with 3.2, I could replace the 5

hundreds of 5 1/4 floppies. Any suggestions on who might know those things?

     From: SUPERONNY To: GOOGY

The best shot is probably (I should say surely) to pick Turbo C. I admit Quick C
2.0 help features are excellent but reliability is one of my highest priority.

Indeed, MIX compiler is good but it has no environment at all. That can make a
difference between programming pleasure and programming frustration, especially
if you're used to "friendly" environment like me.

By the way, I have to tell you something about the graphic possibilities of MIX
C on extented graphics of Tandy 1000. In these graphic modes, it is unfortunatly
slow. For example, the painting is awfully slow, slower than the PAINT statement
of my good old GW-BASIC interpreter. I'm not a speed freak but I would expect
more performance from a C compiler (even at such a low price).

Anyway the MIX package is still a good value. Its book contains a fine tutorial
that helped me a lot. Even if I use Quick C for my small programs, I found
myself using MIX C's book. Microsoft is getting better with its documentation
but, in my opinion, they have a tendency to put too much fancy characters and
page layouts.

For now, C compilers are sleeping in their directories and I'm experimenting
with Turbo Prolog. I found the thing very odd at first but I'm beginning to like
this langage more and more.

I'm sorry Joan. I didn't mean it to sound that way. When you first got
your drive, didn't you have to run HSECT or DEBUG to low level format it?
Then, you run FDISK to choose or make the DOS partitions and finally,
the old FORMAT C: /S to high level format and transfer the system. It might
be better to just try the FORMAT C: /S first. That might be all it needs.
If there are any marginal sectors, the high level ( FORMAT C: /S ) will
usually catch it.

using disks larger than 40 meg on the T2K. Anyway, I heard, but I am NOT sure
that disk manager, which is shipped with the Seagate 251 by HDI works on the
T2K---I am not sure about this however. May be someone else is more clear about
it.

I think I may have finally found the problem with my printer when it "hiccups"
and skips at letter in PP 3.0, WP 5.0, and WP 4.2. I heard that there is a
printer interface 26-2820 which works on the T2K to help it interface with
non-Tandy printers. Apparently it is something in the hardware of the T2K that
makes it hiccup on my NEC P7, I will be getting this interface fairly soon.
Thanks.

     dBXL 1.3
     From: DOUGFOGG To: ALL

I just got a brochure from WordTech Systems indicating that official upgrades
to Version 1.3 of dBXL, dBXL/LAN, and Quicksilver are now available to current
owners at reduced prices until May 15th. Upgrade from dBXL 1.1 to 1.3 is $74,
and from 1.2 to 1.3 it's $49. After mid-May, they're $99 and $74, respectively.
The brochure also indicates the list price for dBXL 1.3 will be $249, both
before and after May 15th. It says to allow 4-6 weeks for delivery. A complete
new manual accompanies dBXL upgrades.
dBXL 1.3 works almost perfectly on the Tandy 2000, and there are 25 new
commands and functions in it. The editor has word wrap, memo fields can be
copied to and from memory variables, multiple parent/child database relations
can be set, the menu-driven mode for new users now has a macro capability, and
there's other good stuff dBASE III+ and IV can't do.
I don't know if they'll fix the SETUP program so you can just pick Tandy 2000
from the menu and go. On the beta copy I tested, the function keys didn't work
if you did that. But you could instead pick the 100% IBM compatible choice and
tell it to use BIOS INT 10h for screen writing, and the function keys worked
fine. In either case, you must put a SET RETRACE ON command in the CONFIG.XL
file. Otherwise, dBXL writes invisibly.
The $249 list price is a little steeper than before; I don't know what the
discounters will sell 1.3 for. 1.2 was around $125. All in all, thanks to a
Tandy 2000 hardware loan to WordTech, they've done a darn good job of supporting
us 2000 folks.

RE: tandy 2000 format program (Re: Msg 14247)
     From: DOUGFOGG To: JOHNMYSELF

A 40 Meg Seagate 251 works fine in a Tandy 2000, John. Just plug it in place
of the Tandon 10 Meg it came with. The catch is you can only format it to 32
Megs with HFORMAT, beacuse DOS 2.11 will only handle 32 Megs per logical drive.
Just use the /P switch with HFORMAT so it will prompt you for the number of
heads, cylinders, and interleave. 251's can be HFORMATted to 32 Megs by telling
HFORMAT it has 6 heads and 615 cylinders (it actually has 6 heads and 820
cylinders to make 40 Megs). An installation guide included with Seagates shows
the head/cylinder configuration for all their drives.

I'm not sure the partitioning software included with Seagate drives runs on
Tandy 2000's, but you can get some that will from Envision Designs at 509-547-
1139 (although I think their phone is disconnected right now due to a move).
Partitioning software let's you create several 32 Meg-or-less logical drives on
one physical drive. A Seagate 251 could be used as two 20 Meg drives, for
example.

Joanna, I'm pleased to find that dBXL 1.3 runs fine on the 2000 with just a
few tricks required (if they don't get fixed before it actually ships). See my
message re dBXL to ALL above. If your T2K is hungry for a dBASE superclone,
feed it dBXL.

Expanded Memory on a Tandy 1000
     From: JEFFPYNE To: ALL

After searching high and low, it appears that there is an Extended/Expanded
board for the Tandy 1000 series. A company called Micro Mainframes of Fulton,
California sells a card called the EMS-5150T. They sell to dealers but the card
can be purchased through Radio Shack's Express Order System. For those wishing
to give Micro mainframes a call, their number is: 916-985-7501.

I haven't ordered mine yet, but I will be soon. Now I can get DESQVIEW up
and running the way it should.

P.S. The card is expandable to 2 Megabytes and comes without
any ram. Suggested list is $199.00

     DMP-106
     From: RVCUSER To: ALL

I have just purchased a DMP-106 and use it in IBM mode. It all works fine until
I try to print graphics. What should the 4 DIP switch settings be? The current
settings are:

SWITCH POS ------- ----

1 IBM Mode. 2
Just a <CR> 3 Charecter set 2. 4
Just <LF>

All the switches are on. If anyone who has a DMP-106 please let me know. I am
trying to get it to work with Print Master. I am also getting LOTUS soon and
there is no support for Tandy Mode printers.

MIKE: I HAVE A 1000TX WITH A 5.25 INCH DISK DRIVE AND A HARD DRIVE INSTALLED.
RECENTLY I BOUGHT A PAIASONIC 3.5 DRIVE THAT I WOULD LIKE TO ADD TO THE CONFIGUR
ATION. MY QUESTION IS CAN I HAVE BOTH THE 5.25 AND THE 3.5 TOGETHER? IF YES, DO
I NEED TO MAKE AN ENTRY INTO THE CONFIG.SYS. I BOUGHT THE NEW DRIVE AT THE
TRENTON COMPUTER SHOW AND IT DIDN'T HAVE ANY INSTALLATION

INSTRUCTIONS. THANKS JOHN
