     From: PACRUISER To: ALL

I need some advice regarding adding a Tandy 20 MB Smartdrive to my Tandy TL/2
computer system. I presently have two (2) 3.5" drives installed but am
interested in getting the Smartdrive as soon as possible.
However, I was told by a Tandy salesman that the Smartdrive should (must ?)
be installed in one of the 3.5" drive slots.
I want to install it in the 5.25" vacant drive slot in the Tandy TL/2 and
still retain the capabilities of my two 3.5" drives. Possible? Suggestions?
Anyone have any opinion of the Tandy Smartdrives versus a hard drive or hard
card option?
Any advice, etc. would be appreciated.

Glentx,
 A few years ago, when i had a Tandy 1000 (original.. now a -tx) I placed 4
floppies on the system. The lines needed to decode a b c d are on the
motherboard, but are not decoded, by using gates from another chip, I was able
to select the lines, although I did use another driver I wrote for that to work.
Once I got a hard drive, I removed the c and d, and never did try this hardware
hack with the hard drives to see if it would work. You can't find anything off
the shelf like this, though.

More than possible. All you need is an adaptor bracket for the 3.5 in.
Smartdrive. Try a local computer store, (Non-Tandy) and tell them you're
looking for an adaptor bracket to mount a 3.5 inch HD in a 5.25 inch drive slot.
Is a pretty standard item for a Businessland or Computerland store.

If all you want is to transfer ASCII files back and forth via modem, then your
COCO III set-up is all you need. If you are talking about "sneaker-net" (
transfering files via disks & taking them to work & back) then you might look
into some of the format transfer programs available. This route could be
considerably cheaper than even the low price of the HX. BUT, if you even
slightly intend to "dabble" in MS-DOS at home, I would strongly recommend going
whole-hog with a good XT or AT machine - not the HX. Once you get started, you
quickly become addicticted and will resent the limitations the HX places on you
as far as expansion. Your TOTAL investment for a reasonable system (monitor,
modem, 512K or 640K of memeory) will be the same or less than the equivalent HX
set-up. Over the years I have accumulated 7 separate computer systems by going
the route you are considering. Although I have had a lot of fun and learned a
lot, I regret the "wasted" money I see whenever I get back in the basement and
stumble over the parts of 5 systems that I have packed away and am not using
because I had out-grown their capabilities. I hope this helps -- it certainly
represents only one view, and most certainly is only one of many that are all
equally correct. It all boils down to doing whatever is right for you at a
particular moment. Good luck. Cheers, -Don Spoon-

Carolyn,

I don't recall if I mentioned this or not, but there are a few software
packages that run on an MS-DOS clone that will read and write CoCo format
diskettes. Two, CoCoUtil and XenoCopy, are available through Microcom Software.
A third, Elite*Xfer, is available through the company selling the Elite-series
software packages. I have used both CoCoUtil and Elite*Xfer and have found that
neither is perfect but they get the job done.
CoCoUtil seems to be a bit finniky with the disk format and will often
report data read errors in cases where Elite*Xfer reads the disk with no
problems. Elite*Xfer has an annoying habit of reporting "Illegal track: Track
999 sector xx." I'm fairly certain that is a quirk (bug) in the software.
Usually if one will not read the disk the other will.
They seem to work fine otherwise except for what I feel is their annoying
habit of convoluted menu selections. You can only copy a single file at a time
where I would like to be able to tag multiple files and copy them all at once.

You must use the Portal (on Main Menu) to get to the PC SIG (Tandy's sister SIG)
. Once there type DA, then TAN, then, SEA M4. You may then type DIR to get a

C:\(1/2 the hard drive), D:\(the other half of the hard drive), E:\(was C:\ but

To anyone who is interested, I have uploaded a file called SAMPLER.ZIP that
gives you access (on a Tandy 1000TL, TL2, and maybe the SL) to two new commands:
RECord and PLAY. These allow you to record any sound from the command line and
play that file back at any time. Very useful for adding voice to batch files.

Included in the .zip file is information about how to get ahold of some better

If you want, I can ship you the special unit (compiled in Quick or Turbo
Pascal) or I can send you the source (I'll have to charge you for the source
code, though).

The compiled unit will let you have access to the following commands in your
pascal programs:

WAITFORSOUND: Check to see whether the sound chip is busy.
CLEARSOUND: Disable the chip.
PLAY_SOUND: Plays the sound, of user-defined length, user-defined speed, and
             user-defined volume.
RECORD_SOUND: Records the sound, of user-defined length and speed.
LISTEN: Instructs the computer to listen to the microphone before continuing.
Sort of like an audio keypress. (This feature is rather erratic owing
to the imperfect nature of the sound chip. You will have to experiment
with threshold values to suit your own voice).

That's the gist of it. I'll send you the compiled unit free, but like I said,
the source code comes at a price, $50.

Thanks, Dave

RE: HARD DRIVE (Re: Msg 16493)
     From: CAMPER To: GLENTZ

Greg,
No.. the hardware change I made was to that. If you look, address
lines 1 and 2, or 0 and 1, get gated to go out as drive select 0 and
1, or a and b. Since 2 lines can be decoded into four:
        1 0 result
        0 0 0
        0 1 1
        1 0 2
        1 1 3
A decoder can be made with empty gates on the board that will allow a
software driver to access these lines. I removed this when I got a
hardcard, so I do not know what would happen if a fixed c: drive
showed up. I think I would have had to change the driver, but never
did try. I do not have that computer or hardware any more, tho.

Dave,
Excuse me for jumping in here, but I had a similar question/problem a while
back with hanging up on TYMNET. The only way I could find to get off was to
issue a hang-up command. I incorporated this in to my logon script file by
waiting for a specific text string to be issued by TYMNET then using that to key
the program to send the HANG-UP signal to TYMNET. The TYMNET script string I
used was "network call cleared at host request" ... or something like that. I
use Procomm + and it has a "WAITFOR {text string} FOREVER" command in its script
language, so doing this was rather easy. No problems at all in the last 2-3
months of using it. Maybe this will give you an idea on how to handle it on
your telecom program. Cheers, -Don Spoon-

which board did you buy? Are you pleased with it? Did you have any

We may "quote" you -- so please send me your comments! Or, send mail

In another vein, I've been noticing a lot of questions about sound boards.

through the whole shabang with my local Radio Shack store and couldn't find the
prob. I finally tried another comm software and WALLA!!! it worked fine.

I also have found from other HX users that they have had the same problem with
the TELCOM that came with their HX. (hmmm I wonder) any way no big deal because
I don't realy care for deskmate.

Carolyn,

When you first enter Telecom, press the f1 key and tab down to where it says
"communications". The three settings here should be COM1, MODEM and PLUS300

From inside Telecom, press F3 - then highlight "set" and enter. The settings
here are 300 baud, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit, flow control on. (I use
Tymnet at 8,N,1. If you usually use a different protocol- substitute that here)
After you press enter, you should see a line on the main Telecom screen that
says :
"SET 300,8,N,1,ON" or something like it. Now press (CTRL) "E". Youll see
a mostly blank screen that says "off line" in the lower right. Now type AT X4
DPphone#. Substitute the number you call for phone#. You should hear the modem
dialing. If all goes well, you should see "on line" in the lower right of the
screen. Hope this helps.

How many ports are on your machine? If you only have 1 serial port then it's
COM 1. If you have your switch box to that port, you can connect the mouse
to the switch box at connector B. What are the drivers called? Are they
COM or EXE files or is it a SYS file that needs to be put in your CONFIG.SYS
file?

Give us a little more info.

smartwatch, also I'v installed the memory upgrade to 640k,along with the rs232
port. I'v also installed an external 3.5"disk drive along with a 20 meg hard
drive. And as i'v said I have a switch box going to the rs232 port. why does
the this scree keep jumping spaces? Anyway I'v also hooked my external
modem to the switch ox. What happened? Yes I have one serial port I'v given it
the address of com1 sence when I tried to tell dos to give it com2 it came back
with an illegal device message. Oh yes I am also running dos 4.0.

Now I'v tried running the mouse driver for the color mouse.and It came back with
"mouse driver not installed- unable to find mouse" message. do you know why it
does this? I thought it was a software problem so I went out and purchesed a
logimouse stk.

# 26-1200 It had a rs232 port plug on it as well as the installation program. I
installed the program and it telles me it doesent recive any data from the
mouse. Next I swapped the modem plug with the mouse plug thinking mamaybe there
was something wrong w ith the switch box. I tried both the mouse and the modem.
the modem worked fine, but I still got the no data message from the mouse. I
was reading the book on the rs232 port. and in it it said that if you planned to
run more then one device on it you sho uld make the address com2. well I tried
that and as i said before my dos said that com2 was an illegal device. Oh I can
change the dip switches on the board and change the modem settings as well as
the mouse but it dident do any good.

so now I'm wounderin g if this is a hardware problem or is it really a software
problem.I'v tried all the things I know. Question? does the rs232portboard have
any jumpers I would have to change besides the dip switches?

These are all tandy products so it would seem to me there should be no
compatability problems. Also do you know why my dos would give me a illegal
device message for a com2 mode command?Anyway thanks for your input and any
thing you might be able to give m
a mouse that fits into my joystick port. but what a waist of money that would

If it is part of the AT command line it just sets the messege that the modem
sends back.

If you had a 1200 baud modem and you wanted the term software to tell you that
you are connected at 1200 baud then set the X value to 4 which is what you
mentioned. Of course all the other options are enabled like CONNECT if you have
a 300 baud modem. The X4 is what I like to call an any situation setting.

The X4 enables all the result codes such as no dial tone, busy, etc. It's not
really necessary but helps when trying to troubleshoot. If you don't want to
type the AT command at all - after you've done the set file, press F3 again,
highlight 'call', and enter the phone number there. Then press (CTRL)E. I've had
problems with this method sometimes (maybe a bug in the program), but it's
easier so you might want to try it. I've never had a problem with the ASCII
filter off, though.

Take it easy.

Ed, I think you're typing too fast for the system. It seems that some of your
stuff is getting cut off. If you only have one RS232 port, DOS assigns it as
COM 1 and you CAN'T assign it as COM 2. You have to have 2 serial ports to
be able to do that. You still should be able to use it on COM 1 in the place
where your modem is connected.

You say you ran the mouse intall program. How is it run? Is a device=mouse.sys
or something like that needed or, is it something you type from the DOS
command line( like MOUSE 1 )?

The RS232 is OK or your modem wouldn't work. As COM 1, it uses interupt 4.
If you put a second port in as COM 2, it would use interupt 3. I think you're
not installing the software properly.

Tell me the name of the command you have to type to install the mouse.

     RE: MOUSE (Re: Msg 16536)
     From: RLYOUNG To: ED605

The mouse.sys goes in your config.sys. You can copy it to your ROOT directory.
Copy the MOUSE.SYS to the ROOT that is. Then you have to edit your CONFIG.SYS
file. It will also have to be in your ROOT directory. You have to add a line
that says DEVICE=MOUSE.SYS exactly as I typed it here.
You'll have to read the DOCS to find out what
perimeters it needs.

You then have to reboot your machine. If you don't get a message saying
INVALID DEVICE or something simular, then the next thing to do would be
to go to the directory that has MOUSE.COM or, you can copy that to your
root also. Then type MOUSE and see what gives.

I don't know exactly what you should do but, that's the general idea.
Without the DOCS, I can only give you general instructions.

Did a manual come with it? If so, you should sit down and carefully read
it.

Let us know how you make out.

If you've followed the Logitech install program, you should have the following:
    Root directory GOMOUSE.BAT
    Mouse directory MOUSE.SYS
                       MOUSE.COM
Possibly a change in your config.sys file that reads "device=mouse.sys"

The GOMOUSE.BAT file will automatically go to the mouse directory and load
MOUSE.COM. If the config.sys file has been changed, MOUSE.SYS will be loaded
when you boot. In either case, you must reload mouse.com after disconnecting
the mouse to use your mod
em. Try the mouse without the switch box, or in the other plug on the box.

If all that fails, get rid of DOS 4.0 and go back to 3.2 or 3.3. 4.0 is a mess
and 4.01 isn't much better.

If you are using Tymnet, use 2400 (or 1200), 7, E, 1. For Telenet, use 2400, 8,
N ,1. Also, with Telenet - for 1200 bps access, at CONNECT, send {enter}D{enter}
, for 2400 bps access, at CONNECT, send @D{enter}. For TERMINAL=, send
D1{enter}.

The "{}" braces are only to show that the ENTER key must be pressed. Notice that
the "D" is uppercase.

Try this and let me know how you make out.

The best thing to do about your local R.S. is to send a letter to the Manager.

Lauren, I recently upgraded my 1000sx to VGA. The card is the BOCA VGA with
256K not ugradeable. My monitor is an amdek 732 640x480 .28 Dot pitch. It works
well and the board is a 16 bit board but is "auto" configuring for 8 bit
machines. I have had 2 problems with the board. The first one just required
upgrading my dos from 3.20.00 to 3.20.22(The old basic wasn't written to handle
the VGA modes). The second one I have not been able to fix yet. The utility
software lets me setmodes for software compatiblity p roblems with certain
programs. I can switch to CGA, MDA, EGA etc but when I try to switch back to
VGA mode it says there was anderror. It usually puts me in mono ega. Boca
research has been helpful, they sent new ROM chips and told me to try some
diffe rent things but nothing has worked yet. As a matter of fact I left the
old ROM chips in because screen 1 in basic gives me a real funny cursor with the
new ROM chips. Other than the emulation switching error everything is fine. I
didn't have to do anyth ing with the board other than install it and hook the
monitor up. I did have to use the slot furthest from the power supply so the
extra connector for a 16-bit slot didn't hit anything(I put tape over the
connector to protect it). The board and monitor w ork great and I also get back
the 16K of RAM that the tandy video steals.

bought an extended warranty (lucky me) so it was fixed at no charge. Tandy
"gave" me the latest and greatest ROM in the process. This has presented me with
a real problem. I've LOST DESKMATE. That is, this new ROM has somehow messed up
DESKMATE so bad I had to dump the whole thing. Since then I've tried to
re-install it but I can't seem to get it to work properly at all. Everytime I
start Deskmate with F/12 it tries to go on a "TOUR" , ugh. If I try to abort the
tour it wants DISKS!!! (I have a 20meg hard drive) Finally if I convince
DESKMATE that a tour is unwanted, it tries to load PLAY.PDM from the drive B
(which is empty) and "locks up"....I've tried everything I can think of. The
article in the JUNE PCM addresses some of this but it's unclear to me if the
article is relevant at this time. Anybody out there know whats happening? I sure
could use some help with this. Thanks!

Let's type in lower case. It's much easier on the eyes.

As I told you in the other message, you have to copy all of those files
to the ROOT directory. I assume you have a hard drive. You then have to edit
your CONFIG.SYS file to add a line that says DEVICE=MOUSE.SYS.

You then have to reboot. After you reboot, type MOUSE and it should work.

I can see from your message that it is a software problem You should get a
beginner's book for DOS to learn about AUTOEXEC and CONFIG files.

Let us know how you make out.

Yes, you can call me Reggie in the message. The header must have RLYOUNG as
that's my DELPHI address.

Reggie..or you can call me John or Slick, or... or...

Look in the database, in Utilities I think, for a file called PARADISE FIX or
something simular. Do a search for PARADISE. It fixes a bug in Tandy machines
for reporting wrong video modes.

Reggie

Edited... The file is in the Utility Topic. Go there and type:

READ TANDY 1000/PARADISE.

Paul,

Could it be that somehow the version of DeskMate in the ROM is different
from the version of DeskMate you have? It certainly sounds like you have two
totally incompatible versions somehow. But, before doing anything drastic, run
SETUPSL2/F and see if that helps any. Also, make sure you have the DMCONFIG
environment variable set so that DeskMate knows where to find its configuration
files. Hope that helps!

Reggie,

You don't have to put all those files in the root directory. As a personal
preference, I don't like anything except what is absolutely necessary in the
root directory. In my CONFIG.SYS file I have:

    DEVICE=C:\DOS\MOUSE.SYS
    DEVICE=C:\PCTOOLS\PC-CACHE.SYS
    INSTALL=C:\DOS\SHARE.EXE
    INSTALL=C:\PCTOOLS\PCSHELL.EXE

It also keeps the system a lot cleaner. You wouldn't want duplicates of PC Tools
utilities hanging around in the root directory. Especially considering that they
have overlay files you'd end up with a mess mighty quick. In case you are
wondering, INSTALL is new in DOS 4.0 and is designed to load TSR software much
more efficiently. Each TSR loaded via INSTALL= in the CONFIG.SYS file doesn't
have memory allocated to it for environment space and it's loaded a little
tighter in memory.

Just for the heck of it --- if you have DEVICE=MOUSE.SYS in your config file,
you shouldn't have to type MOUSE after booting. At least I don't on my 1000
original. You only have to type MOUSE (using MOUSE.COM) to reload the mouse
dirver if you are using
the same com port for both mouse and modem and your returning from the modem
and want the mouse.

I see. I don't have the Logitec mouse. The user is having problems getting
it up and running. I asked him what files came with it. Mouse.Com and Sys
were the files so I knew Config.sys was necessary. I figured after loading
or should I say rebooting, Mouse.Com was the next step.

He has the DOCS. I guess after he changes the Config, he'll figure the rest
out.

we'll incorporate a BASIC test for sure.

have one problem: I am using a VGM-200 monitor connected to the VGA board that

other times rather extreme. Anyone have any ideas? Local Radio Shack does not.
I would appreciate any help since my eyes dislike following the bouncing balls.

Yep. It was just about a year ago that I was recommending people buy a 1200
baud because the price was so cheap. Now it is the 2400's. Maybe in a year or
so the 9600's will be where I can afford one. I bought my first 2400 for $355,
and it was a SYSOPs special for 1/2 price. Just bought a ZOOM 2400 the other
day with a FAX send option for $119.

A big difference from my first 2400 $$$ amount.

I think that within the next 18 months we will see a significant drop in the
9600 prices.

I seriously doubt that 9600 will *ever* come down to the price of a 2400. The
major reason being that to get that kind of bandwidth out of a standard phone
line, the modem has it's own CPU. When you consider the technology involved, I
don't think that the curent 9600 baud modem prices are at all unresonable.
