I was asked to help my mother install a 30 Mb hard card in her T1000TX
tonight. She bought it from Hard Drives International. It was already low- level
formatted. After the installation I ran FDISK and found it was parti- tioned as
one logical drive. I entered "FORMAT C: /S" and it stepped all the way through
615 cylinders. I then got a "format complete" message, but no A: prompt. I then
went and started from scratch. I did a low-level format using DEBUG. I entered
g=c800:5 at the "-" prompt and answered all the questions. The format went well
( I guess ) and I got a "format complete" message. From there I went into FDISK
and could not partition the disk card with the #1 option. What's wrong?

I guess I can't get it across to everyone just what the problem is. I will try
one more time. If my setup is incorrect, the computer will detect it upon
booting. It will then, tell me my configuration is incorren i am advised to
press the F! key to cont inue.At that point, my computer locks up. The only way
I can get past this F1 prompt, is to try rebooting several (30 - 40) times, then
it will eventually let me in without locking up. When i do get in, I
immediately change the setup to the correct values, and no more problems. My
neighbor has a
computer just like mine Tandy 3000HL. If his setup is wrong, or he changes
monitors or whatever, it will stop upon booting, say his configuration is bad,
then suggest he hits the F1 key. When he does this, his computer keeps right on
going, and doesn't lock up like mine does. I am very frustrated, because I must
always make sure my setup is 100% correct before I boot or I can't get in. That
is frustrating when I change out a drive or monitor or something. I was just
wondering if anyone had the same or
similar problem. Thanks for the reply, I appreciate the help very much.

Don,

Which version of DOS are you using and do you know which interrupt the hard
drive is using? If it's using IRQ 2 you'll need to flip switch 1 on the
motherboard - near the power supply and the first slot. If it's using IRQ 5
you'll need to flip switch 2 on the motherboard. For the TX I'd recommend using
IRQ 5 if it's settable.

is not as complete as in MS-Kermit, but for all work here on Delphi except
Hangman in the games area, it has been just fine. Might try playing with the

The LIMS 4.0 software uses the EEMS additions. As a result it can only map
memory area for which it supplies Ram. It cannot map areas of memory already
filled by your PC's motherboard or by any add-on memory board. For example if
you have 512k of conventi onal memory and let the EMS memory provide the missing
to make 640k, only a single program can use the 512k area- because it is EMS
memory and therefore cannot be mapped. On the other hand, if you disconnect 256k
of convetional memory and let the Ems memor y rusupply 384 (256 +128k) ,
only256k is restricted to use by a single program. The size of multiple programs
that can be running simultaneously therefore increases from 128 to 38k. It
appears to be a method of letting multiple programs of 384k run simulta neously

You can get an upgrade in the form of software only.

When you purchase the MS-DOS 3.3 disk system run the setuphx program and have it

It will also serve you better to get the memory upgrade ( if you don't have it )

David,

When you access any drive in the system, all of the drive motors spin at the
same time. This is true on all PC-compatibles as well as other computers. The
primary reason for this is that it saves time and wear and tear on the drives.
Look at it this way, it usually takes about a 1/4 second for the drives to reach
300 RPM and remain steady plus 1/16 to 1/8 second for the heads to settle (quit
bouncing) when you load them.
If the motor spins only when the drive is accessed that means a 1/4 second
delay every time you access a drive. It also means the drives heads and motors
are going to be doing a lot of starting and stopping and loading and unloading.
If the motor spins only when the drive is accessed and you copied files from one
drive to another you'd have to start the motors on one drive and load the heads,
wait, read a file, start the motor on the other drive and load the heads, wait,
write the file, ad nauseum. If you have head load solenoids you'd hear a lot of
clack-clack-clack as the heads load and unload. That'd drive anybody up the
wall.

     VGA Upgrade
     From: RANEBOW To: MISAL

No, I didn't. When I called the Tandy Repair center in Portland, They told me
that the 1200 was 100% compatible with the IBM and that any VGA card would work.
After I tried to install it I called Compuadd for help getting it to work and
they told we they can't help with any Tandy product because they are not
compatible. I think I need to call Compuadd back and tell them I have a Tandon
XT Clone instead of a Tandy and see if they will help me.

I have one other question while I've got your ear. I have a 2400bps modem. When
I set my communication program to 2400 and call Delphi, (on Telenet) it comes up
in 1200. Do I have to use a different phone number for 2400? If so, where do I
find the number?

Thanks for your help.

  Greg,

While the current solution, as you explained, . . .

. . . is to start all drives when any one is accessed, it sure
does seem wasteful. Seems like certain commands would trigger all drives and
  other commands would not.

It reminds me of a line of 10 cars at a drive-in window, all with motors
running as they inch along every couple of minutes. I mean, car hops are passe
in this day and age, but I'd bet a significant dent in airpollution would be
achieved if all drive-in windows were replaced with old-fashioned drive-in
restaurants, where they actually bring something to you, instead of having you
creep toward it in an automobile.

David,

You can change it so that only one selected drive's motor spins but that
requires changing the jumpers on the drive itself. That is, if your drives have
jumpers on them. A lot of them nowadays have a soldered in jumper instead.

Bill,

Sorry to take so long getting back to you on this but I finally have a patch
program in the databases. It took me quite a while to figure out the easiest
method of getting this done without getting very specific with the version
number in your Paradise ROM and whether or not you had the RAMBIOS.SYS driver.
As it show happens I purchased the book "System BIOS for IBM PC/XT/AT
Computers and Compatibles: The Complete Guide to ROM-Based System Software" this
weekend from Phoenix Technologies. Whew! What a title! As I was thumbing through
the book the solution struck me like a brick. And it's so simple. The resulting
program is in the Utilities topic area of the databases in the PC SIG under the
name "Tandy/Paradise BIOS" - or will be when Reggie makes it available if he
hasn't already. That one program includes the T1KVGA patch so you won't need it
laying around anymore.
Download the program and unZIP it with PKZIP. When you run the program you
will receive a menu to select your video card. Use the arrow keys and select VGA
Color and press ENTER. That's all there is to it. Again, sorry for taking so
long but the previous version of a program to do the same thing was nearing 10K
and still didn't account for several versions of the BIOS. I tried this one and
it seems to work very well on all versions and the source code is included if
you like tinkering. Very short and straight forward.

shorted or something. The self test now prints missing 3 of the vertical dots

Well I got cable 26-288 from Radio Shack (25-pin male/36 pin IBM por and tried
it. Same results as my original cable. Then I got today cable 26-227 (25 pin
male/36 pin Tandy port) and while the machine now turned on with the dip switch
on IBM mode, shortly thereafter it went kaput. I don't know if it's the cable
itself, or if the printer was about to die anyway, or if there was a bad
connection to the port and something shorted.
Anyway, now I don't even get printer on at all. Something clicks inside when
I turn it on, so there is obviously current going in, but the on light or ready
light fail to turn on. Only after switchin the printer on and off many times
repeatedly, do I get those lights on and the carriage return plus centering of
the head. When I manage to get a self-test three or four of the vertical dots
are missing. The paper detector is not working at all. The screen prints (with
the dots missing) when in DOS, but not when in a program.
Guess this is it for the adventures of me and my tandy.

Bill,

OOPS! I made a goof in the original program I had uploaded. <sigh> I
accidently used the poke() function to change the display combination code at
segment address 0040:008Ah. Unfortunately, that function pokes a word (two byte)
value and might alter the Diskette Data Rate for your floppy drives. So if you
get "General Failure Error" when reading from a floppy then kick me, it's my
fault. I just discovered the problem today and have firmly squashed it. It
doesn't have any effect on PC/XT clones or so it appears unless you use INT 13h
Disk BIOS Services instead of the INT 21h DOS Services.
While I was at it I modified the program so it displays the current video
settings in a window at the top of the screen. That way you can run the program
to confirm/deny whether or not your system has the bug and to verify that the
change had been made. Another addition is that you can press ESC in the menu to
exit without making any changes. In the previous version it would set the
display combination codes to 255 and 0 if you pressed ESC. Hopefully the end
result will make the program a log easier to use and more usable. I have
thoroughly debugged this one to make sure that each and every possible bug has
been squashed.

Janet,

The Paradise VGA Plus is guaranteed to work right out of the box with no
problems. I say that with at least some confidence in that I have a Tandy 1000
TX at home and a Tandy 1000 TL/2 at work with Paradise VGA Plus cards installed
in them. However, you may need to beat on the door at Radio Shack to get a copy
of the VGA drivers for DeskMate from them. I don't think any of the Tandy 1000's
with DeskMate in ROM came with the extra video drivers. You'll need to get
drivers specifically for the version of DeskMate you are using, as well. The
Tandy 1000 TL uses DeskMate version 03.00 and uses the DMVDVGA.RES driver. The
Tandy 1000 TL/2 uses DeskMate version 03.03 and uses the DMVSVGA.RES driver.
As far as your Tandy 1400 LT problem, you'll need to use the the PC-
compatible version of DeskMate on it or the version that comes with that system.
DeskMate that comes with the TL and TL/2 will not work on any other computer.
Same goes for DeskMate on the SL and SL/2.

I use Easy Access and Deskmate 3.03 without problems. However I have a TX so
Deskmate is on the hard drive and not in ROM as is your case.
What I do is call the Easy Access menu system from Deskmate. Deskmate itself
is actually called from a batch file called at the end of autoexec. When
Deskmate is exited, the batch file continues on.
When I call a program from Easy Access and the program is finished, instead
of returning to Easy Access, Deskmate appears!
If I had Deskmate in ROM I could try to simulate your problem but of course I
don't. Try calling Deskmate with e:desk and see if it works. If it doesn't then
maybe we can isolate the problem by trying a few different setups.

     From: GLENTZ To: ALL

visited Radio shack hooked up their system same problems still. We finally
trieddeskmate that supports VGA setups. It worked fine. When we renamed the
VGA driver and tried to restart deskmate told us it couldn't find the driver to
start the system even t hough their are EGA, CGA and t1000 16color drivers on
same disk. One problem I am having is with basic. I have GW-basic 3.20.01 and
Tandy/MS-dos 3.20.21. According to the manual I should be able to access screens
7-10 but all it tells me is an "illegal fu nction call." Any body got any
ideas. Question ??? Does anybody know of software on the board here that is vga
and works on the ir VGA 1000sx?? Could be shareware I have is buggy.

    Thanks

Greg,

None of the Tandy 1000s with DeskMate in ROM came equipped with the
additional video drivers - particularly the VGA driver. Apparently Tandy ass-u-
me-d that if you had a Tandy 1000 SL/TL that you wouldn't even both er to
upgrade to VGA what with their super-CGA modes. You'll need to drop by your
local Radio Shack store and pester them for a copy of the VGA driver. Keep in
mind that this driver is specific to DeskMate versions 03.00.xx and 03.03.xx.
Versions prior to DeskMate 3 version 03.03.xx use the driver called DMVDVGA.RES
and version 03.03.xx uses DMVSVGA.RES. The names are very close (dmvDvga versus
dmvSvga) but they are not compatible. IE, DMVSVGA.RES will not work with
DeskMate 3 version 03.00.xx and DMVDVGA.RES will not work with DeskMate 3
version 03.03.xx.

     Boca VGA on 1000SX
     From: GLENTZ To: ALL

Finally found a partial solution. Apparently there are different versions of
basic out there even if they have the same version #. RS let me have other
versions of Tandy basic from non 1000 machines and these work fine for screen
modes 7-9. Screen 10 is
. One is from a TX and the other is from a non 1000 machine. The files have
different dates and sizes. But the real tell teltale sign is when I start each
one up. The tx say version 3.20.01, Tandy 1000 GW-basic and some other things.
The other verson (which supports screen 7-10) says version 3.20.01 Tandy
Gw-BAsic and some other things. It does not say any thing about a 1000 machine.
The non-1000 version does not support screens 3-6(even with cga back on-line).
Also it does not support the enhanced s ound chip present in the 1000, it only
supports the standard commands found in all versions of basic. So it looks as
though I can't have my cake and eat it too. This also brings up a ?. For
people with 1000 machines and upgraded video which basic do you
use? By the way Basic 3.20.00 tandy 1000 version does not support upgraded
video. Basic 3.20.01 Tandy 1000(From a 1000TX) gave me stange results in screens
1 and 2. basic 3.20.01 from a NL class machine(non 1000) is ok except no
enhanced sound chip suppo rt. Anybody know if there is a version that supports
enhanced video as well as the enhanced sound available on the 1000(enhanced
meaning EGA/VGA). Also have basic 3.22.00 which seem same as 3.20.01 for
non-1000 machines. Still looking for some shareware lideshow(vga) software to
check this new combo of mine out.

1.02.00 is recommended but you can upgrade to 1.03 I'm told. Tandy recommends
3.20.21 DOS for 1000 series machines, especially SX and earlier. 3.30 will work
but they say it's unstable on most SX machines. I have used Tandy dos 3.30 and

THe version that came with my 1000sx works on VGA but i assume it's because it

have another version from a 1000tx that does have a t1000 video driver and
mouse support. It says that it is version 1.00.00 Personal Deskmate 2. Would
DMVDVGA.res work with this version. Right now with my VGA it does not work.
Well it does but there is no display, hope you memorized the menu and various

You can put a 3 1/2 inch drive in place of your "B" drive. It can be internal.

JHERALD, YOU CAN ADD A HD 3.5in drive but you need a special controller card
that recognizes the controller built into the SX. Normally it would be a C
drive if you don't have a hard drive etc. You can make it the A drive but from
what I've been told yu= you lose the built in A drive becuse the SX controller
has only A, B drive capability. As far as DOS ver 3.20 and up should be fine.
You may or may not need a config.sys file for the drive. I was read in PCM for
my 720 3.5 I would and I don't. Can't he lp you on the tape drive.

Greg,

Personal DeskMate 2 was developed for Tandy 1000 systems only and won't run
on a non-Tandy computer. I'd pretty much toss that version of DeskMate in favor
of DeskMate 3.
DeskMate 3 comes in two flavors: The PC-Compatible version comes with all of
the video drivers but doesn't support the sound capabilities of any of the Tandy
1000's - no Music or Sound applications. The version that comes with ROM based
Tandy systems (1000 SL, TL, SL/2, TL/2) comes with the Tandy TGA (16-color)
video driver and supports the full sound capability. The version included with
the Tandy 2500 XL comes with the VGA driver and also supports the sound
capabilities.
These three versions of DeskMate 3 are compatible with each other, but not
completely. The PC-Compatible version will run on any IBM PC-compatible
including Tandy 1000s and 2500s. The ROM-based version of DeskMate 3 will run on
that particular system only. The reason is because a lot of the actual DeskMate
Kernel is in the ROM on that system. However, the video drivers that are
included with the PC-Compatible version will work fine on all versions of
DeskMate 3. Perhaps version is the wrong word here. Let's say the video drivers
included on the PC-Compatible version of DeskMate 3 will work on the ROM-based
systems provided the actual version numbers of the two DeskMate 3 packages are
the same.
DeskMate 3 versions 03.00.00 through 03.02.xx are all compatible and use the
same video drivers but DeskMate 3 version 03.03.xx uses a different video driver
that isn't compatible with previous versions. Hmmmph.... confusing, eh?

I think I am beginning to see the problem. You stated that you already have 3
drives in your TL (2 720's and a 360). What is the controller configuration you
are using to accomplish this? I think that your system is confused. It wants the
hard drive to be C: drive and you already have a "3rd" logical drive in the
system - is this 3rd floppie C: drive?

That would explain why the hard drive worked in the "other" TL. I will wager
that the "other" TL had 2 drives or less?

The jumpers you mentioned, the W jumpers, are on the controller. The drive
select (DS) jumpers are on the drive itself. Look closely at the drive
probably near where the ribbon cable connects to it and you should see
some jumpers labeled either 0 1 2 3 or 1 2 3 4. They might or might not be

You can replace one of the 5.25 floppy drives in the SX with a 3.5 drive with no

have to cut and extend the connector wires since the connector is on the right

The EX is expandable to 640K. You can do this yourself with an expansion kit
from Computer Plus (800-343-8124). Computer Plus is a bonafide R.S. outlet, but
is much cheaper (15 to 20 percent discount) than a retail store.

The upgrade is pretty simple and almost anyone can handle it. Give C.P. a call,

If you have the memory installed in the "second" bank - you will get "zip", as
the first bank must be filled to make the electrical connections to the second.

Check to see if the board is marked as bank one and bank two. Then, make sure

My regular system is built around a 512K CoCo III, but I am considering buying a

price ($259), but I'm getting widely varied opinions on this computer. Is it

If it is just a link and you don't see yourself expanding beyond 640K, modem and
a hard drive then it is a good choice. I used an HX as my first IBM clone and
had no problems.

Keep in mind that the price does not include the monitor.

You will also need to buy a serial board or internal modem for connecting to
other computers.

The ideal setup for the HX is get the plus expansion adapter with enough memory
to get you to 640K and add DMA. Get a modem and when you can afford it a hard
drive.

Many advertisers in PCM carry these devices for the HX.

So if all you want is connect with a Clone then yes its a good choice.

     Hex Code
     From: JAXOMSTEVE To: W4KY

Jim,
Hi! In this month's PCM, Listing # 3, RunDemo, you show Hex code's for
the InRegs.cx. I'm totally unfamiliar with HEX stuff. When trying to change
the listing to a filename other than CHKDSK, I looked at the ASCII chart in the
back of QUE's "Using QuickBasic 4.0". It only lists the Last 2 numbers that you
used in the InRegs.cx statements.
          EX: InRegs.cx = &H2E63 'c

I know where you get the "&H" and the "63", but how do I find the "2E" number?
Say I wanted to have the keyboard buffer filled with "Clearmem [Enter]". You've
given me the "C" and now I want the "L". My ASCII Table, which also gives HEX,
lists "l" as "6Ch" and "c" as "63h". Where can I find the middle two charactors?
IE: the 2E between the &H and the 63?

Anyone can jump in and answer this question! I only addressed it to Jim because
it was in his article. Anbody knowing anything about HEX codeing please feel
free to answer this message! Chow Fer Now..Jax...

Wasn't the CoCo drive single sided, John? Also, weren't the control lines
altered on the card edge.

If the drive is a DS-DD standard, then sure it will work. I know the controller
card edge (to drive) was not standard on the CoCo II, and I was under the
impression (or influence <grin>) that the circuitry was the same for the III.

Although, I do remember a controller by Frank Hogg (under OS9) that supported a

Mike,

    The CoCo 1, 2 and 3 all use a *standard* Shugart-style floppy drive. There's
nothing "odd" about the connectors, controller or anything else. Perhaps where
you are getting confused is that Tandy pulled the drive select pins in the cable
so that the drive is jumpered to be drive "1, 2, 3 and 4" and the cable handled
the actual drive-select via pin pulling. The only other "oddity" is that Tandy
used the side-select line as the fourth drive select line. Although, this was
done via software and not in hardware. Via modifications to Disk BASIC you could
use 35, 40, or 80 track single or double sided diskettes. Of course OS-9 for the
CoCo will use 35, 40 or 80 track single or double sided drives right out of the
box.
    I've been using a Teac FD-55B (40 track double sided), FD-55F (80 track
double sided) and FD-35F (3.5 inch 720K) drives on my CoCo's since the days of
the CoCo 1 with a Radio Shack disk controller. Nothing odd-ball about it
whatsoever. Although I've been using an IRQ-driven controller for a few years
now instead of the Radio Shack controllers.

John,

Yeah, Tandy used standard ST-412 drives and those were originally for the
Model 3/4 and they later added a host interface for them to work with the CoCo
3. The oddity with those hard drives is that they used a Western Digital WD-1010
controller. I've yet to find any information on that particular controller and
was told it was specially manufactured for Radio Shack. I do know that Western
Digital has a WD-1010 "chip" but it's definitely not a card. To the best of my
knowledge, I've never found specs or tech manuals on any Western Digital
controllers other than WD1002-xxx, WD1005-xxx, and WD1007-xxx controllers. Got
me on that one, but the drives themselves are completely standard.
