with the 286 Accel. card. Had to set it to the alternate address. This has

Sorry for being so late with this reply. I have been following the thread on
your VGA problem. The first thing you must do is run the CMOS SETUP program to
tell your system that you are running VGA. If you can't find this program on
your system disks, look in the IBM Topic of the Databases. There is a generic
CMOS Setup program that you can use.

Also, if you are loading ANSI.SYS or TSR's (memory resident programs), this may
cause a problem.

Switches 5 & 6 on your Paradise card should be set to ON, and as Greg told you,
switch #2 must be set for PC/AT and not PS/2.

Paradise sends "test" programs with their boards. Run the test programs and let
us know what they report.

I have switched over to TYMNET to avoid the charges that are coming to TELENET.
I'm having a problem though getting TYMNET to disconnect when I'm through on the

To logoff, I have tried going to the main menu and typeing "EXIT" and going
to the main menu and typing "BYE", but in both cases I get the same results . .
. . I get logged off of DELPHI, but the carrier remains connected to TYMNET.
As it is I have to make a long distance call to get the TYMNET nbr, so
needless to say, I'm interested in having the connection drop as quickly as
possible.
Can anyone tell me if I'm doing something wrong???? I haven't changed any

David A. Lein, in his BASIC book, said that before formatting a disk, it should
always be erased with a bulk eraser. Something about agitating the iron oxide
particles to be sure they are "awake." Does anybody actually do that? Even to
new diskettes? I bought one of the bulk erasers, but found the instructions
clearer for use with cassette tapes than for diskettes. Does one place the
front of the machine in the middle of the disk and make a series of pulls toward
the outside? Or place the front of it in the middle and turn the back of the
eraser in a circle around the outside? Or place the middle of the eraser in the
middle of the disk and turn it in a circle? Should the eraser come in contact
with the disk or be held carefully above it?

Best results bulk erasing diskettes that I have found, come when you hold the
eraser over the disk and move it in a circular motion. Physically touching the
media with the eraser is not necessary, and could be harmful if theire is any
dust particles that you could grind into the surface of the media.

I've only found a few occasions where bulk erasing was necessary, but if you
prefer to use this method, that's the way to go about it.

The following piece of instructions can be addeded to the end of your auto- log

the string in the WAITFOR command to match what you get from TYMNET at sign-off.
This works for me.

WAITFOR "network: call cleared by request" FOREVER

I see your point in your script, of putting in the message you get from TYMNET,

The way you have it now, *one* little piece of line noise will cause your script

     From: GREGL To: MISAL

Mike,

No quite. First he is using a Tandy 1000 TX which does not have any CMOS or
EPROM setup. What should be done is to flip switch #1 on the motherboard to
disable the on-board video and flip switch #2 on the motherboard to get external
sync from the VGA card. This way the sync on the motherboard doesn't "bleed"
into the VGA card.
Also, the VGA board should be set to PS/2 style video. You can set it either
way, but PS/2 style is best. That way you can use color and mono video modes on
either a color or monochrome monitor. Otherwise you can only use color modes on
a color monitor and monochrome modes on a monochrome monitor.
From what I gather in our discussion, when he turns on the computer it shows
640K on the CGA monitor (built-in video), which is normal. The system appears to
boot but he gets a bizarre "test pattern" on the VGA monitor instead of a steady
cursor and letters. He also says that he tried the VGA card by removing all
other boards and the 128K memory upgrade so that the system was "stock" except
for the VGA board and gets the same results. The only off-color thing I find is
that he is using a Paradise VGA 16-bit card. Yet, I tested the same card in my
TX at home when we were doing the VGA round-up and it worked fine.
Well, not exactly the very same card - but a Paradise VGA 16-bit video card.
The only outstanding question remaining is the type of monitor he is using.
Could it be as simple as using a standard VGA monitor with the VGA board set for
a multi-sync monitor?

Ed,

I know of a company that sells the diagrams for an adapter that will allow
you to use Atari-type joysticks with the Color Computer. This should work on the
Tandy 1000 as well since both use the same joysticks. Both the Color Computer
and the Tandy 1000 use analog joysticks, meaning that you get differing levels
of X/Y movement. This is absolutely fantastic for applications like drawing and
what not. A lot of the other systems, such as Atar, IBM, etc. use digital
joystick that use switches instead of potentiometers so that the joystick is
either centered, up, down, left or right - and nothing in between. If you are
interested, I can look up the name of the company and send you that information.
It appears to be a very simple circuit requiring a minimum amount of soldering
and the parts are available at the local Radio Shack store. The cost is about
$10 or so.

Exactly Kevin, and that's where the Pascal keyword comes into play. From within
a C program you can call a Pascal procedure - but you must declare it as Pascal
(such as int Pascal pMoveXY(int x, int y);) The compiler will handle those
differences automagically - providing your compiler recognizes the Pascal
keyword.

Delphi will automatically reformat your lines so that it can make them readable
for users with other that 80 column screens. If you want to be sure that the
message looks exactly the same as you typed it, use a dot command. Put the
following line at the beginning of your message:

".LITERAL" <--- don't use quotes, and be sure the . is in the first
column

At the end of your message, put:
     ".END LITERAL"

These lines will not be printed when the message is read, but it will keep
Delphi from reformatting things on you.

P.S. I think these can be abbreviated as ".LT" and ".EL", but I'm not sure.

Switch #4 has me guessing now -- in the ON position it supports 16 bit BIOS

it be that the TX is reacting abnormally to the 16 bit?

Has he told you if he has run the 16TEST program that comes with the board? If

    Keith,

Correct. If you had an HST Dual/Standard, then you can talk to other HST's
as well as V.32 modems at 9600. The non-Dual Standard HST's can only talk to
other HST's at the high rate.

The &D command tells the HST how to handle the loss of the DTR (Data
Terminal Ready) signal.

&D0	Causes the modem to ignore DTR.
&D1	Causes the modem to go to command mode when DTR is lost.
&D2	Causes the modem to disconnect when DTR is lost.
&D3	Causes the modem to reload the registers from NRAM when
		DTR is lost.

Most communications programs with a "Hangup" command assume that you have
&D2 set, and simply drop the DTR signal to get the modem to hangup.

Only difference between ANSI and VT102 for the most part on Delphi is that some
of the VT100 sequences will clear your screen if you're using ANSI, where that's
not the intended purpose. If you have a VT100 emulation, it certainly won't
hurt for you to use it on Delphi.

The next time you do a download, issue the "DOW MENU" command to start the

I agree about the posible monitor conflict. I Tried a Paradise and a kTrident

meant it would not
work correctly. It did work but no better than a regular VGA card. I was
trying to get 640x480x256colors on an amdek 732 vga monitor I know it supports

In order to obtain 256 colors, you must have Extended Graphics VGA. This
requires an 800 x 600 mutli-frequency monitor and at least 512K of memory on the
video board.

You can only expect 16 colors (640h by 480v) with a fixed frequency monitor and
256K.

changes to the SCREEN and PALETTE routines, which was fairly simple. The Model

I do recall a program the did a BASIC conversion (Tandy/IBM) but I believe that

I also have the TL/2. I got the 20 meg IDE drive when I purchased it, and was

since purchased a 40 meg IDE drive, and found that it is possible to daisy chain
two IDE drives together. The drives are both Western Digital, so I called them
for more info. Again I was told that it is possible to daisy chain the two
together, and got the proper jumper placements. I even logged on to the Western
Digital BBS and downloaded specific instructions to get the two running
together. However, I have not yet been able to get the computerr to boot with
the two drives connected. Either of the two will boot if connected as singles,
but not in tandom. Perhaps it's a power supply problem, but I doubt it as I kept
power to both drives at all times.

paid Tandy for the 128K Video Memory expansion chips? I hate to tell you this,
but those chips are only for VIDEO memory and can only be used for the special
Tandy 1000 Video Graphics modes. They are utterly useless to you if you're using

HEY ALL YOU TANDY 1000 PROGRAMMERS!!! GRAFIX Version 2.5 is online in the
Tandy Database now. It has added support for TRUE Video Paging for swifter
animation and cleaner screen changes.
GRAFIX 2.5 contains the following enhancements:
Video paging is now supported for high performance animation.
GRAFIX and ADJMEM will now protect up to 128K of video memory.
The protection of video memory is skipped automatically if the Tandy 1000 has
  a 128K memory expansion option.
The sound interface has been rewritten to produce better quality sounds and
noises. The system timer chip can now be programmed to produce sounds,
noises, and delays that last less than 1/18th of a second.

TANDY11 problem:

The TANDY11.COM program that enables 640x200x16 color graphics does not work
properly on the Tandy 1000 SL/2, TL/2, and RL. When the 640x200x16 color
graphics mode is used, all graphic modes except that one are distorted. The
only two ways I have found to get around the problem so far are to reboot the
computer or go into DeskMate and then exit again. The program works fine on
the Tandy 1000 SL and TL. Until the problem is solved, do one of the two
things mentioned to get the other graphic modes to work again. I will try to
correct the situation as soon as possible.

REGISTRATION:
GRAFIX Version 2.5 Now includes a Registration form for the purposes of
Testing the water's for it's popularity. If you use GRAFIX, Please Register
it to encourage further Enhancements. The Author has spent many hours and
months preparing this program and is curious as to how many people with Tandy

Steve,

That's not quite true. Microsoft Windows 2.11, for example, will not run on
a Tandy 1000 TL without the 128K memory chips installed - regardless of whether
or not you have a VGA card. If you installed the chips prior to installing a VGA
card, keep them installed - you may need it later. But I wouldn't buy those
chips if I had a VGA card already unless I specifically needed them - such as to
fix MS Windows.

Jim,

I wasn't aware that PFS: First Publisher had problems when the extra 128K is
installed. Thanks for the information. I do know of a few games that won't run
with the video memory installed, but those are usually cheating in some way or
another. I will say that the Tandy 1000s are very bizarre in the may video
memory is set up and I think that Tandy was very brilliant for designing such an
asinine setup. Of course, I'm being really sarcastic on that. :)
But, on the original topic, if First Publisher doesn't work with the extra
128K installed, it must be doing something that it shouldn't be. I think the
fact that it uses so much memory may have something to do with this. I'm not
real sure exactly what happens with and without the video memory installed to
even hazard a guess - except to say that it's the most bizarre thing I can think
of at the moment.

     RE: tl2?? (Re: Msg 16919)

The first answer to that question is that CHKDSK only reports the amount of
memory used by DOS. The area between 640K and 768K is not used by DOS - it is
used only for video memory. DOS has no idea that memory is there in a real sense
of the word. Of course, it assumes that the text display starts at B800:0000 but
even that is really handled by the BIOS.

Chaining hard drives? I presume that you have more than one hard drive and want
to access them as one drive? There is a way you can do that using the SUBST
command. For example, let's say you have drives C, D and E, and you want drives
D and E to be a part of drive C. First create two directories that don't have
any files or subdirectories in it - this is VERY important. If the directory has
files or subdirectories in it, those files will disappear when you SUBST to that
directory. So, start with the following commands:

    C:\> makdir DRIVED
    C:\> makdir DRIVEE
    C:\> subst D: C:\DRIVED
    C:\> subst E: C:\DRIVEE

Now if you CD DRIVEE, you will see the root directory of drive E the same as if
you had typed E:. Does that answer your question?

Jim,

GREGSHULTZ and myself daisy-chained two Miniscribe 40 meg IDE drives in a
Tandy 4020LX today. Needless to say, it was an all-day affair! The first thing I
did was remove the original, working 40 meg drive and connect the secondary 40
meg drive. Once the system booted, I ran FDISK and FORMAT on the drive to make
sure it worked. Then I powered down the system, connected both drives, and
powered back up with the Utilities disk to run SETUP. (You don't need to do this
on the TL/2.) Of course, it didn't work!
I called Miniscribe and talked to one of the tech support representatives.
What a waste of time. He was very arrogant and even gave me the WRONG jumper
settings for the secondary drive. So after that didn't work, I called MS-DOS
Support at Tandy and spoke with a very nice woman. Of course, she didn't know
all of the answers but was patient and understanding. She had to go through a
couple of manuals to find the jumper settings for my drives and told me that the
primary drive should be jumpered across pins 5 and 6, and the secondary drive
should be jumpered across pins 1 and 2. I would have never thought of that,
particularly since the primary drive was jumpered across pins 1 and 3! So I
moved the jumpers as she told me and tried it again. It still didn't work!
So I powered down the system, booted with the Utilities disk and ran Setup
again. This time I told it I had one 40 meg (Type 17) drive and it booted fine.
I ran Setup again and told it I had two 40 meg (Type 17) drives and it finally
worked!
I wish we were trying the exact same drives and system that you are so I
could be of more help. But it may help, seriously, to remove the primary drive
and cable up the secondary drive. FDISK and Format it to make sure it works,
connect the primary drive again and make sure the system still boots. Finally,
jumper the primary drive the way it should be (it may be jumpered for a 1-drive
system now) and make sure it works again and then jumper and install the
secondary drive. Perform everything in logical steps so you'll know what and
where is going wrong. Call MS-DOS Support at Tandy and get the jumper settings
for BOTH drives. Some of the people there are very curteous and really try to
help and some of the others may seem to be not so helpful. :) If you don't get
it the first time, call back.

I'm not sure if you're the one to address this too regarding PFS: First
Publisher and the 128K Memory upgrade, but here it is. The SL/2 and TL/2 and RL
address their video memory slightly differently than the Original SL & TL, so
that may be part of PFS: FP's problem. It's also probably why the TANDY11 driver
has quirky problems with resetting the GRAFIX modes on those machines. I'm
betting (Until told otherwise) that the PFS:FP will run fine on a regular TL

power lead from that to supply power to the 20 meg, but left the controller
cable connected to the 5.25. Maybe that's the problem? Didn't think it could be,
as the drives will boot singly. Oh well, I'll give it a couple more tries.

Thanks. BTW...what's the number for the Tandy msdos support?

Although the editor in PCP is not bad -- there are better ones. You are not

Take a look in the Business Topic of the database. Use SEA EDITOR to find those

The jumpers only identify the drive number for DOS. Reggie is talking about a
resistor (looks like a socketed chip) that is known as a "terminating resistor
(for the last drive in the system)". This usually pertains to floppie drives,
however. Mike

Mike,

I don't think the IDE drives have removable terminating resistors. At least
neither of the Miniscribe 40-meg AT-IDE drives had one. Note that most of the
newer floppy drives are using 1000 ohm terminator resistors, which means you
don't have to remove them and, in fact, should be left in the drive. I think IDE
drives are using this same concept.

problemsgging in to Delphi and PC-Link, but mainly the problem was that when I

file. Now, in addition to that, a lot of the programs I use regularly just
stall in the middle of execution. Such programs are: Timeworks Data Manager,
Practical Software's Moneymate, and NOW even my brand

Anyways, I need advice from anyone who has ever had this problem , in case it is
something I can correct myself, or if I have to take it in to Radio Shack. Any

Sure Keith -- there are a number of control codes that can be used in Script
files or from the Delphi commmand line. The CTRL-U is used in a Script file as
"^U". From your keyboard, you simply hold the CTRL key and tap the U key. This
"clears" anything on your current "send" line (before you hit Return) --
including any garbage that may have crept in. Here is a list of the control
codes for Delphi:

CTRL-Z exit or return to previous menu (like EXIT)

CTRL-C cancel current operation (like BREAK)

  CTRL-S stop scrolling (PAUSE)

  CTRL-Q resume scrolling (RESUME)

CTRL-O tells Delphi to stop sending text (OUTPUT OFF)

CTRL-Y exit from independent programs, like games

CTRL-U clear current line and start again

CTRL-R redisplay current input line (REPEAT)

CTRL-X clear typed ahead commands (or erase text in conference)

With only one drive, he will have some problems. Have him set up a RAMDRIVE (
virtual memory drive). Depending on which version of DOS he has, he would use
either VDISK or RAMDRIVE to set it up. Then he can download to that.

He must remember to copy the files over to a regular floppy before he turns off
or reboots the machine. The RAM drive is made up from memory. It and
everything in it dissapears when you reboot or turn off the computer.

Mike,

A SCSI host adapter doesn't need a lot of chips. Mostly it converts signals
from the XT or AT bus into signals used by the SCSI bus. But I think $45 sounds
reasonable for such a board. Did you ever see the $150 hard drive adapter Tandy
sold for the Color Computer? It has two 18 cent chips on it.
SCSI drives are very nice and inexpensive compared to IDE and ESDI drives.
The only problem is that SCSI isn't very well supported in the MS-DOS world for
whatever reason. Probably for the same reason that IBM likes to fool everyone
into believing that whatever it builds is best, so everyone uses ESDI drives for
high performance.

Hilton,
If you have VGA installed (Which I think I remember you saying you did),
the VGA Bios may be over taking the System Bios and not reporting the additional
128K of Memory to the Monitor. Let me do some checking in my utilities and see
if there's anything that will report on those chips.
If there's not one, I'll get back with you on it. Of course the easiest way
to check if they're ok (Well not easy really but reliable), is to remove your
VGA card and monitor and put the CGA back online and then boot up. If the system
sees them it'll report 768K on boot up. Like I said, maybe not so easy, but if
they're there and the VGA's gone the TL should say so on boot up. I hope this
was a little helpful. Chow Fer Now...Jax...

Mike,

Isn't new technology wonderful? <grin> I really like embedded SCSI drives,
particularly the small price, high reliability, and small form factor of the
larger drives. For example, you can get the Seagate ST-196N and, I think, the
ST-1144N (80 and 120Mb) 3.5 inch drives with embedded SCSI controllers. For the
ST-506/ST-412 interface, you'll have to get the 5.25 inch versions.
Even so, keep in mind the limited support of SCSI drives in the IBM world.
Noone has yet standardized the port address for the host adapter so you may need
to get OS/2 and Zenix/Xenix drivers from the manufacturuer of the host adapter.
Of course, this may not have any effect if you are strictly a DOS person.
SCSI can help save a lot of real estate (bus slots) by allowing you to daisy
chain multiple hard drives and tape drives. If you decide to go the SCSI route,
look for combination SCSI host adapters with on-board high denisty floppy
controllers.
Should you decide against SCSI, ESDI and IDE seem to be good alternatives.
IDE drives, like SCSI, require only a host adapter or perhaps only a small chunk
of the controller on the card. Many people here are professing the excellent
quality, high-speed, and quietness of the Conner IDE drives. Although when I
asked Tandy Tech Support, they told me that I should, under no circumstances,
low-level format an IDE drive. This was rather puzzling, indeed. No explanation
was given except that it can cause a lot of problems. Albeit I don't think you
can take this advice at face value.

Terminating resistors aren't limited to floppies only. They are on Seagate
drives, for sure, and reading the WD WDXT-GEN2 Plus installation guide, page
1-10 says and quote:

The drive termination resistor should only be on the drive, which is the last
physical drive installed in a daisy chain configuration. When you have two
hard disk drives, remove or disable the termination resistor from the drive,
which you plan to attach to the middle connector.

Appreciate your relating this experience. It prompts me to look much harder

     RE: tl2?? (Re: Msg 16980)
     From: GREGL To: MISAL

Mike,

I have to agree. Although I dearly love SCSI drives, the lack of support in
the IBM world doesn't make them so attractive. Given other computer, I would not
even hesitate to install massive SCSI drives and tape streamers on a SCSI bus.
It is rather humorous, taking into account that many systems (Macintosh
especially) have really flocked to the SCSI bus in droves. (Although the Mac is
weird, it seems with exhorbatant prices for everything.) It should also be noted
that many new systems are being introduced with the SCSI bus on the motherboard.
But not IBM, for whatever reason.
Taking into consideration all that is left (ST-412, ESDI, and IDE), I have a
tendency to go the ESDI route. It is basically, for all intents and purposes, a
high-speed ST-412 interface that uses NRZ encoding instead of MFM. (Note that
RLL, as some abashidly assume, is not really an 'encoding scheme' and is used by
all interfaces. For example, ESDI drives pretty much use either NRZ or NRZ/RLL
like ST-412 uses MFM or MFM/RLL.)
At the moment I am being very wary of IDE. Mostly because of all the secrecy
involved and that none of the manufacturers I've spoken with will admit anything
about it. Perhaps I haven't reached the right person yet, but everyone seems to
be keeping a very hush-hush atitude about it. I guess I should say that I am
more paranoid than wary. <grin> But I'm sure you know about my paranoia for
things unknown.
Greg Shultz was trying to do an in-depth article on IDE and he, too, has
been kept in the dark by the manufacturers so far. If I recall correctly, he
called Conner and Miniscribe (perhaps a few others that I'm not aware of) and
Conner said they would 'look into it' and call him back.

Cecil,

The Tandy DMP-240 emulates the Epson color printer so you can use it with
*any* program that supports an Epson color printer. The print quality is nice
but you can still tell that the pictures are printed with a dot matrix printer.
If you want better quality I would suggest moving to a higher price range - ink

Mike, The article on VGA cards in the latest PCM magazine made very interesting
reading. One area it did not address was GW Basic programs. The Tandy GW Basic
manual only shows support for EGA and Tandy enhanced CGA. I've read a message
somewhere that said if you want to run a TCGA program you must pull the VGA
card. I and I imagine scores of PCM readers have typed in dozens of TCGA
enhanced Basic programs from PCM magazine. If the above is correct it would be
a major inconvenience to use all those fine programs, if the VGA card has to be
pulled each time. Yours and anyone elses comments on this problem would be
appreciated.

Unfortunately that 128K upgrade for your TX is for Tandy Video Graphics

The driver program that comes with "most" VGA cards allow the emulation
necessary to run CGA programs. For example on my Paradise card, I have a driver
called VGAPLUS.EXE. By loading it as VGAPLUS CGA, I can emulate CGA on my VGA
display.

Now, Tandy's enhanced graphics are a problem with non-Tandy machines, or non-
Tandy video drivers within a Tandy machine. What I tend to do is change the
SCREEN and PALETTE commands in these (PCM) programs to accomodate my display.

Your point is well taken -- you have given me an idea for a program to modify

It gets many IBM-style programs whose only sin is writing direct to video memory
to run on the T2K. dBASE III+ is one example. Download both files, read the
documentation, and give T2KIBM.COM a try with as many IBM-type programs which

There are two solutions to that problem. The first of which is to get rich

386 system with a large hard drive. The second solution is to purchase Minix,
which is prominently displayed in source code form in the book "Operating

complete system on disk (ready to run with source code) is $79.95. You can order
it through Prentice Hall, Route 59 at Brook Hill Drive, West Nyack, New York

down one or two screens to where it say's Video Memory. Set that to 128K. That
extra Memory is for Video Use only! It free's up your 640K of DOS (64K of which
was being used for Video Memory for the Tandy's enhanced Graphics.) This 128K
set of Chips which bring's you to 768K can only be used for Video Memory. If
you're wanting Extended or Expanded memory, you'll need to buy a memory board
dedicated to that purpose. Hope this helps...Jax...

Yup...this 128K upgrade is essentially usless for anything but video memory. You
might want to contact Invisible Software for info about their EMS board. It's
real LIM 4.0 hardware and works in the TX. Call them at (415) 570-5967 or FAX
(415) 570-6017 and they'll send you a brochure. I talked to a couple of guys in
the Tandy forum on CI$ who have them and they were prety impressed. The board
can be bought bare or with up to 2 meg of EMS chips.

Good observation!! I never thought of it because in over a year of use, I
have never had it fail to shut down the connection. Probably would not be too
catastrophic though if you recognized that your script had hung. Just do an
alt-h and Procomm + asks if you want to abort the script, answer yes then things
are back to normal. BTW, if you want to see a rapid exit from the system, put
this in your Aspect file, then re-read my posting. It will kick you off every
time!! Took me a bit to figure out that one!! I got the idea from the
DATASTORM Forum on CIS. It was a popular bit of advise over there, appearing
about once a week. After I added it to my log-in file and had sung their
praises for a week, I started getting kicked off the system every time I read
the same string being passed on to someone else!! I finally talked them into
putting it into a file on the databases then referring the people who asked the
question to that info file. Thanks for the insight.

Thanks for the help. I found GRASP and the program CAP.COM. Now I have another
problem. I am using Deluxe Paint II in Tandy 320x200x16 color mode to create
graphics screens which I then save in B [A [A save with CAP.COM's BSAVE option.
I then load the screen from my basic program. Everything works fine until I try
using basics get/put statements. I'm trying to capture a small part of the sc
screen in a GET array and write it to a sequential file on disk so that I can
later read it back from the disk. This would allow me to save more images per
disk since they don't take up 32000+ bytes per image as does the BSAVE option.
I have went exactly by the book (Graphics and Sound for the Tandy 1000) but when
I try to display the image after reading it from the disk, I get an illegal
function call error every time. Using the GET/PUT statements without writing or
reading to/from the disk works fine, but when I read the GET array from the disk
file, and then try to PUT it on the screen I get the Illegal Function Call
Error. I have looked at the actual values stored in the array, and some of them
are negative and some are over 20000. I set up the array with dim A%(1661,0),
using the formula for calculating the array size that was given in the book.
Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated.

You can add the chips. You need 8 chips I believe they are 100 nano second chips
n the manual for the expansion board. Its easy. Just line up the notches on the
chips and push. this is easier with the board out of the machine. One word of
caution Check the metalic shield on the bottom of the expantion board after the
chips a are instaled. If there are any pins pocking through this, pull on the
shield to free them. I have made this mistake twice.

    DIM A%(1661,0)

    SCREEN 5,1
    F$ = "frame.bas"
    DEF SEG = &HB800
    BLOAD F$
DEF SEG Everything works fine so far. The graphics screen is loaded and
displayed. Next:
     GET (2,2)-(81,84),A%
PUT (0,85),A%,PSET This also works, the imaged is saved in the A% array and
PUT on a different part of the screen. This is where the trouble begins, I'm
trying to save the graphics data in the A% array to disk as a sequential file to
be read in and displayed later.
OPEN "test1.dat" FOR OUTPUT AS #1
     FOR I = 1 TO 1661
     WRITE #1, A%(I,0)
     NEXT I
CLOSE 1 Still no error messages so far. Now I'm trying to open the file
and retrieve the data into a different array and display it.
OPEN "test1.dat" FOR INPUT AS #2
     FOR I = 1 TO 1661
     INPUT #2, B%(I,0)
     NEXT I
CLOSE 2 Still no problem but when the next statement is executed I get an
Illegal Function Call Error everytime.
     PUT (10,10),B%,PSET

I am working on a graphic adventure game, and would like to read the
graphics (which will only occupy the upper left hand corner of the screen) in
and display them as needed. I've thought of 2 alternatives, is it possible to
BSAVE only part of the screen which would not occupy as much disk space as a
full screen, or could I possibly load 3 additional screens (pages) at once, and
then get the image I need from 1 of them and then display it on the current
screen being viewed. I've programmed in basic for quite awhile but not much
with graphics, once again, any help you can give will be appreciated.

I have seen all the video types at home, work and friends house, but nothing is

     From: DRSPOON To: RVCUSER

Ray,
I just spent the last 5 minutes looking for my owner's manual for my ATI
VGA Wonder video card, but couldn't find it. So the following remarks are to be
considered a result of my faulty memory, and as such are my OPINION, subject to
change upon the submission of correct data!!

1. I THINK that a large number of the current video cards for other modes, such
as EGA and VGA support earlier modes as well, so going to one of these modes
should not keep you from using your current HGA software, providing you choose
one that is advertised to support HGA too.

2. VGA and more recently Super VGA (SVGA) are rapidly gaining in popularity,
while HGA is on the wane (in my opinion).

3. VGA (and SVGA) can do MONOCHROME!! In fact the monochrome VGA monitors are
considerably cheaper than the color monitors. I'll bet that you could tolerate
monochrome VGA (or SVGA) just fine, and would probably get a noticable
improvement in resolution.

4. Hurculies has just entered the SVGA market and their video card is causing a
bit of a stir among the graphics gurus. It is apparantly VERY fast, and has a
wide range of graphics capabilities. I would SUSPECT that their new video card
would (might?) support their oder HGA mode. May I suggest that you send them a
short note outlining your visual problems and asking about support of the HGA
modes and the newer SVGA modes?? The draw- backs to this approach are that the
card MAY not work in your TANDY, and from what I have heard, you may need some
special drivers to use some of the common software available. If you ask about
the card, might not hurt to ask what common software packages support the card
or which ones they provide video drivers for.

5. If you stick with what you have, I am afraid that you will have ever
increasing difficulty getting current or new software to support the HGA mode,
and will be stuck in a dead-end branch off the mainstream of computing.

RE: HGA Popularity (Re: Msg 17065)
     From: GREGL To: RVCUSER

Ray,

If you like the resolution of VGA, you should at least consider a VGA card
with a monochrome VGA monitor. This is almost exactly like color VGA except that
the card automatically adjusts the colors for up to 64 shades of gray. The
difference between gray-scale VGA and color VGA is invisible to the application
and the display is a tad crisper with the gray-scale monitor. I used a Paradise
VGA Plus card and a Magnavox gray-scale monitor for over a year before upgrading
to a color monitor and really enjoyed it. You get all the benefits of Hercules,
CGA, EGA and VGA graphics without the problems of actual colors. Of course, I
suggest you take a sneek preview at one of your local computer dealers before
making the final decision. At the present time it appears that Hercules may be
slowly fading from the market so you may run into compatibility problems down
the road if you by a Hercules card. Besides, gray-scale VGA monitors cost $150
and less.

Much of the business software either intalls to monochrome or can be switched
when loaded. Although you have a CGA monitor, you can still choose to install
(or load) the software in the monochrome mode.

I realize that the Hercules mode and a monochrome TTL monitor has better
resolution, but I am not at all sure your Tandy machine will get along with a
Hercules video board.

If you choose VGA, you can always run a paper white monochrome monitor, however.
I have a Paradise video driver and a NEC Multisync GS (Gray Scale), that does a
super job for Word processing and the like.

I will stick to this mode until I can afford a VGA card and a B & W (or what

My eye doctor told me this would happen but I wanted to try color for a while

You've misunderstood the speed rating. In fact it's exactly opposite what your
thinking. Yes your T4000 could handle faster chips [C ps but it won't work any
faster. If you put in slower chips computer may hang-up because chips aren't
able to keep up with the demand the computer is putting on them.

Basically faster chips don't make a computer faster.

Yes, your 4000 can handle faster SIMM's, just don't mix them. Also, unless you

Adding more memory is as easy as installing the hardcard. For this I suggest
Computer Plus (800-343-8124). Adding 256K of memory is around $49. You can also
get the hardcard here, if you desire ($269).

     autolog problem
     From: BRANDY84 To: ALL

I'm having a problem creating an autolog, using a 1000SX, Tandy Plus 1200
internal modem set at 300 baud and Deskmate II. The autolog is for Compuserve.
The computer dials OK, then gives two distinct tones. At that point I
always have to hit the Break button to bring a Connect to the screen. I then hit
Control C and complete the logon manually. If I don't hit the Break button,
there's a long wait th en Connect, a garbage symbol and No Carrier flash on the
screen in quick succession.
Nothing I do substitutes for hitting the Break button. Shift 6 C and/or
Shift 6 M inserted in the autolog sequence don't do the trick.
My autolog for Delphi works fine - get through in a flash. But the other
one always trips over the need to hit Break. Any solutions? All suggestions
gratefully received.
N.B. I have Deskmate 3 and maybe one day I'll use it. Right now it still
drives me crazy shuffling diskettes.

I don't want to sound too flip, but dump Deskmate once you get the idea how to
run communications (or any) software. The sooner you ween yourself from the
Deskmate environment, the better off you'll be.I know some take offense to this
attitude, but when you think about it,it's true. Most other software that does
what deskmate does, does it better. It's nice to get you started, a real dog
after. Ron

Good store Computer Plus, I get stuff there in person.I don't know where you got
those prices from.My 32 meg hard card (the one that died) cost over $400. One
note about Computer Plus, I brought my deceased hard card back after only using
it for 3 months.I for the life of me could not find the slip.I had been there a
few times before,so I think the Tech person recognized me.He took the unit back
to check out, then called to say he re-ordred another. No problems. This
unsolicited testemony is for those looking for a reputable shop.I have found
some real weasels out there. These Computer Plus folks are O.K.

I think Ive found what ya need... I started to develop the same thing for our
Biz, but found a Shareware Version Right here in PC C Bus Database. Go there and
SEARCH SALES. Its called the Sales automation sys. Ive left Misal notes about
it.. But I looks real good.

Also this months PCM reviews two very good looking Systems. But the price is too
much for me. I'd rather develop it or reg a shareware product first.

If ya find anything Else.. Im interested too. Drop me some mail.

Ok....This can get *quite* involved. The standard UNIX compression utility is
called simply, "compress". It is a Lempel-Ziv compression program, and does
quite well at compressing files. Now, as for where to get it, it is available
for anonymous UUCP from a system in Meadville PA, of all places. I will have to
dig for the number, in the meantime let me know if you know how to use UUCP, if
not, I'm going to have to write a tutorial for you. UUCP (Unix to Unix CoPy) is
part of the Tandy 6000 development system, if you don't have the development
package, then you don't have UUCP.

     MGA/Herc and the SL
     From: RVCUSER To: ALL

Hi all,

Just want to let you know that I was able to get a hold of a VM-5 monitor for my
1000 SL. I am also using the built in Hercules/MGA monochrome mode. This is a
great setup for my eyes. I am very budget concious so I'll use this set up
until I can get a VGA card and a MONO VGA Monitor.

A fiew tips to pass along in case anyone wonders.

1. This etup works great with PFS First Publisher. I can see as much of my
publication as on My VGA at work.

2. The letters and graphics are much sharper and easy on my eyes.

3. This setup is also compatable with the following software and these also
produce great text and graphics. PFS First Choice, LOtus 1-2-3 ver 2.01,
Wordperfect 5.0(In the display option choose Hercules mono), Gramatik IV, Dbase
III+, and I'll try more and let you know.

4. One other thing. Under this mode the Tandy 1000SL needs all of the 64K
video RAM on most aplications that run in the herc. mode. So if you have any
video memory protect routine, get rid of it. It plays havic with most programs.

5. To solve other problems with software that only support color graphics I
have donw loaded SIMCGA from the PC database. It works great and also gives me
the crisp mono resolution that I need.

Just thought I'd pass along my findings of the MONO graphics mode of the SL.

Have you tried resetting the rom with SETUPSL /f . this swithcg is to set it
back to factory settings. The part should b available from the shack (special
order) you should not have to go to a repair center. If the local shack does not
do well at getting the part, try calling Tandy. You should be able to find a
customer service no. at 1-800-555-1212 (this is directory Information). Tandy is
in FT Worth Texas. I have heard of some good responses from this avenue.
