     VGA
     From: NYMAN To: ALL

I just bought a used VGA card and monitor and wonder if anyone could tell me if
they are any good and also if anyone has any experience and advice to pass on.
Such as any known bugs or problems or special ways to set them up. I am using
this on a TL/2 on which I will have 5.0 Dos as soon as summer is over and I move
back to town from my lake home.

I did put the card in and hooked up the monitor and find if I don't use the
keyboard for a few minutes the computer will lock lock up and I have to reboot.
I haven't looked into the problem yet and I imagine I may have to somehow tell
the computer I am using VGA or else I might have to use one of the programs from
the disk that came with the card. Then again maybe I will have to get in touch
with the company to see if they have any modifications to use with the TL/2.

The card is from RenaissanceGRX called SuperRVGA II and the monitor is a Samsung
CN4551 which is called Sync Master which I take to mean Multisync.

Any comments and advice will be appreciated.

thanks - jim

    Jim,

Are you using DeskMate when this lockup occurs?? If so, it could be
DeskMate's screen saver trying to kick in. Did you tell DeskMate that you're
using VGA.

I'm not sure about this, but it's just a thought. Also, if this is a 16-bit
card, there should be a jumper block on it to tell the card that you're using it
in an 8-bit slot. Make sure that it's set correctly.

Thanks for the info. By the way did you see someone speculated that your 32K is
coming from unused video memory? Are you using the onboard tandy graphics or
have you installed an ega or vga card? If using Tandy graphics they may have a
valid theory since the memory is set aside. Otherwise I think they are wrong
since on T1000sx the video memory is returned to DOS and becomes a normal part
of DOS 640K memory.

I just ignored the tandy reinstall disk. Instead booted from A: and typed
format C: /S and used my backup disks. Everything is fine now. I guess what
happened was command.com was somehow (could have been something I did) moved off
track 0, causing setup to not see it on C:. Thanks though, it is sure nice

Delphi is making some adjustments to the Tymnet lines. This will cause
ramdom results until the adjustments are finished. Till then, if you get the

on with the login.

No, you didn't do anything wrong.

able to register yet, but am going to soon, so that I can get a manual that

doing. So far I just use autodial, then I use the macros (alt and a key) to
call up my user names and passwords. Since they are changed just about the time
I'd get them memorized, I let the macros memorize them. The last couple days
when I have gotten on. Things have gone ok. I wonder if it just wasn't a
quirk. The Scramble game was real slow the night I had trouble logging on. But
thanks for your answer. You will send me looking for answers to the questions I

It is almost impossible for the system (Delphi) to enter your name and password
after you connect, Deb. This is usually done by a "script file" (Procomm has an
auto-record mode which records every keystroke sent and received) which can
"waitfor" and then "send" answer to prompts.

As I recall the signal lines for the CM-11 needed the CM-11 monitor cable.
Without this, it would not function. Also, I beleive that the pinout of the
video driver was not standard. I *think* that you may have to make you own cable
to get this to work with a standard video output. Let me see if I can get the
pinout info.

     ADVICE
     From: NYMAN To: ALL

I just bought a used unknown brand XT type PC compatable with DTK/ERSO Bios 2.37
with a 3 1/2 & 5 1/4 and a Seagate ST-225 20 meg HD. This also has what I think
to be a parallel/serial board with a clock (no docs or disk). This board takes
up two slots. Since I didn't get a manual with this I have no idea what I have.
Could anyone please help me identify what I have.

Can any one please tell me if I can buy a 286 or 386 mother board to replace the
8088 mother board that is in it now? They seem to very cheap in price. Also
would it be to my advantage to do it. Would I have any problems running my
software if I was to go 386? Any recommendations?

The 3 1/2 inch drive is a Panasonic JU-257A023P D H1037 and it has a pin that
goes in the hole of a HD disk so I am wondering if it might be a HD. The 5 1/4
is a Copal M2551A. Never heard of this brand.

thank you -- jim

About that Copal drive you thought you had.. it is actually a Fujitsu 360k

be the serial and parallel port cards with a second port added..but without

Les,
Well I went out and bout QRAM today and you're right, it will access 32K of
EMS for UMB on my Tandy 1000 TL. I've only got one file using it right now
called RAMBIOS.SYS which loads my VGABIOS. It takes a full 32K. I tried loading
my MOUSE.SYS HI, but I'm using MOUSE.SYS version 7.04 and it takes 33K so it
won't fit. I've tried a few variations, such as loading TANSI.SYS Hi which is my
VGA's ANSI driver and it only take's about .5K so having my RAMBIOS loaded HI
seems to be the way to go for now since VGA is funky without it. I'm not sure it
was worth $65 buck yet, We'll see. Chat at ya later...Jax...

You will have to give us a better description of the board in question, Jim.

Yes, you can replace the XT board with a 286 or 386. Your old software will run
and your machine will be slightly faster. You can then also take advantage of
DOS 5.0's capabilities and run Windows if you wish.

There are several programs in the Utilities Topic of the PC-SIG that will help
you determine what your system is comprised of. Do a SEARCH DIAG to find these
programs.

Sorry 'bout the slow reply ... haven't been in the TANDY SIG in a while...
The 128 k of video on the TL is unavailable to DOS... QRAM is supposed to
get around that ... assuming you have the right memory management hardware.

The 32k is actually in DOS range, but I forget where. I'm sure QRAM could
find it. I'm not sure about the 128 k extra Tandy put in the 1000T_ series.

Like I said, it was a guess... Norton SI didn't give addresses for the 32k
it found (beyond the 640k main memory). I think video is at B000 or B800
depending on whether you have monochrome or color. Tandy Video is a whole
'nother story. Of course the various advanced boards can have memory from
other locations as well.

The only problem you will have if you switch to a 286/386 board is the hard
drive controller. You can use an XT HDC, but you have to tell the AT setup
program that there is no HD. The XT controller has a ROM that automatically
patches the BIOS for HD use. This will happen when you boot the AT and the HD
WILL be accessable.

Well for some reason MOUSE.SYS refuses to load hi with RAMBIOS loaded HI. It
only takes about 14K when RAMBIOS isn't loaded so I haven't figured out why it
won't load, but I'm working on it. As it is set now, RAMBIOS.SYS and TANSI.SYS

Mike, it doesn't surprise me. I wonder if Tandy really does make so much money
by selling their crippled products to the unsuspecting public that it cancels
out the losses they suffer from all of the frustrated customers who throw in the
towel and leave them for the likes of EPS, Zeos, etc. I suspect that somewhere
down the road it is going to come back to haunt them. So many people I've know
love Tandy at first and swear by them, but then over time they slowly get
frustrated. The frustration hasn't been limited to just the 1000 line either.
I've known folks who ran into problems with the 3000 series. The model 600
didn't make to many friends either the way Tandy abandoned it.

And mentioning Zeos above, I was talking with them the other night and learned
that their newest 386-25 comes now comes with an upgradeable (sp?) CPU. The
computer (without monitor, graphics, or harddisk) is just around $1300. Have
you heard of EPS going the route of the upgradeable CPU?

Thanks for the reply and I'll wait your further news concerning the CM-11, if
any. --- Jay

     From: JAYSTEIN To: JAXOMSTEVE

No, I haven't done anything yet with the monitor, so no damage done to the
wallet yet. Anyone who's owned a Tandy computer for as long as I have will have
gotten the wallet walloped a few times at the very least. It comes with the
territory and is one of the reason I'll probably not buy another Tandy computer.
(I'm apparently a little dense headed as I've got more than one! The main
reason I won't buy another Tandy is the attitude of the service department,
especially customer service in Fort Worth.) My question was for future
reference. Thinking of adding a computer and looking to see if I could save the
cost of a monitor and then later when I've got more bucks, get a multi-sync and
then when I've got a few more bucks, get a VGA card of some sort.

In the long run it some times costs more to do things in stages, but it keeps my
budget in balance. Of course, the way computer prices drop so much over time,
it occasionally comes out cheaper to buy in stages.

By the way, I was going through some of my stacks of paper which I've read
aren't supposed to exist in the "paperless society" that our computers have
brought about and I found copies of two messages between you and someone called
"BJ85" in which you were asking BJ85 about his column in which he wrote that his
friend who had a Tandy 1000A was able to add VGA graphics with a ATI VGA
wondercard. Was this some hoax or did someone mistake the 1000SX or later model
for the 1000A.

I've got an original 1000 I'd love to upgrade to VGA. So far everyone has told
me that isn't possible. Various reasons are given, but the conclusion is the
same - it can't be done.

I did once hear a rumor that one could use the bios chip from the 1000SX, but
other's I've talked to said that the SX's chip couldn't possibly work in the
1000 or 1000A.

The messages I refer to apparently are not longer on the forum. Thanks for the
help all the same and I'll see what Mike or someone else turns up.

a tandy serial card. I tried cleaning the mouse but still no luck. i Maybe I

Hello everyone.I am a new member so I just wanted to introduce myself so you all

Compuserve veteran<for any of you fellow CI$'ers that may be out there>.I do not
yet own any Ms-Dos machine but plan on getting one sometime in the future and
plan on it being in the 1000 line. Right now I am operating on a Color Computer

on upgrading just about all that stuff soon> and am only using RS-Dos right now
but will be operating on os9 soon. You can also fin d me on the Coco sig and OS9
sig on Delphi. Since I am going to get a tandy computer<so I can get a lot of
features not offered yet for the now orphaned COCO>,what would anyone out there
recommend?I am looking for something with a lot of expansion slots<I don't know
what the maximum is so far>,runs that is completely compatib;e le with IBM
PC<which I believe all are>,and that they run all languages such as Pascal,C,
Cobol, and others.I am basically looking for something with a lot of expansion
capabilities but isn't too hard for someone who isn't "great" with computers
yet<G>. Well this looks like a great place for tandy support and I can't wait to
jump in! Thanks in advance! Chris<the Newcomer> Perrault

According to the "weekly" rags -- the Zeos (and others) who have made their
motherboards "upgrageable" -- are rather embarassed over it. The price of
upgrading to a new motherboard is actually less than the "upgradeable" packages
offered.

EPS does not offer the "upgrade" bus adaptor -- and neither will the others,
very soon.

You can set up a print queue (page 544 of the DOS manual) to print text files
under DOS 5.0, Chris. I have not tried the 3.3 SPOOLER with DOS 5.0, but if you
test it -- make sure it is with *test* data. There are spoolers under the
Utility Topic (PC-SIG) that will work. Type SEARCH SPOOL when in that topic.

Just thought I'd jump in if you dont mind. I am using a spooler program called
"DMP". It is a great spooler in my opinion. It lets you spool to any kind of
extra memory you have or to the hard disk. I am new to Delphi so dont know if it
is available here or not. it is shareware and is really worth it . it is a TSR
prog. and doesnt use much memory. I only have 640k so i use the
hard disk as the spooler. it is really fast even though i use the hard disk.
it knows when you are accessing to the hard disk if your working with the hard
disk while printing, and it waits till it is free and continues printing.
if it is here it is worth checking out. I also use DOS 5.0.

especially if you are used to Procomm or Telix which i use. if You go back to
Deskmate Telcom after using any of these excellent programs it seems
like your back in the Dark Ages!. I also am at 2400 baud. And locally I
usually have transfer rate of 230 cps. but Delphi seems to have a lot of noise
so my transfer rates really slow down any where from 80 cps to 185 cps.
So this may be your problem also.Dont know. Try Telix or Procomm. You
wont be sorry. And if i'm not mistaken you can run it directly from Deskmate.
Correct me if i'm wrong. Not sure.

Hi 'all'! I'm a relative newby in the Tandy arena, and am experiencing a little
difficulty making my T3000 hook up to my hard drive. I've got a 16-bit 2fd'2hd
controller, and a Seagate st251 42 meg with 6 heads and 820 cylinders. The drive
list in the ' setup.exe has no such drive, and the HSECT program, which it
appears will let you format other than standard drives (you choose the
head/cylinder arrangement) sits idle with a formatting message when used.
Everything is mechanically hooked up correctly, n and the drive was in use when
I purchased it, so is already formatted and loaded with programs, but I just
can't seem to access it! How do I get the 3000 to recognise a 'C:' command and
quit giving me that dang 'not valid' crud? I've set my 'confid.sys' to
drivparm=/d:1 /f:2 but no bananas... Any ideas?? Appreciate any help someone
can offer, as I feel crippled without a hard drive!

Kermit is a trasnfer protocol -- not a telecommunications program. Under the
Telcom Topic of the Database (in the PC-SIG -- Tandy's sister SIG) take a look
at TELIX. This had Zmodem "built-in" -- it is also a very full-featured program.
I think that you will like it.

I believe that you need to perform a "low-level" format on the drive before your
3000 will recognize it. You can call the controller ROM routine to do this for
you. Let me know what brand of controller you have (Western Digital, Adaptec,
etc.).

Software Solutions: Disk Manager or Speed Stor Hardware Solution: New
controller with on-board bios A BIOS upgrade where you can define your own drive
parameters is also a solution. I am running a 3000 with a BIOS upgrade
(Phoenix) from Upgrades, (206)881-7997 in Washington or (818)884-6417 in
California - Toll free #'s are (800)541-1943 for Washington or (800)955-3527 for
California. Both the AMI for the 3000 and the Phoenix work. I am using the C &
T 286 BIOS because the 3000 has a NEAT Chip Set in it. Each of these BIOS's
will activate the NEAT Chip Set, at least it has in my 3000. The Phoenix see ms
to be the most compatible. The only problem I have found using it is a
reluctance on the part of my 3000 to recognize the CTRL-ALT-DEL as a warm boot
(my machine crashes). An irritating characteristic of this BIOS is its need to
do a memory check - tw ice- on a cold boot. Very slow when you have 8 megs of
memory.

The AMI BIOS is also very compatible but will, for some unknown reason, slow
floppy drive access time to about 7 seconds if you use any speedup programs in
the autoexec.bat or at all. No speedup programs, like QFRESH or ZIP, and no
problems. It also allo ws you to skip the memory check. I have two 3000's so I
use the Phoenix in one the AMI in the other.

My hard drive is a Tandy 70 Meg (Actually a Rodime 5090 MFM). I purchased a
DTC7187 RLL controller and now have 91 Megs of storage and a 15ms access instead
of 28ms access. NO - I have not lost ONE SINGLE BYTE - AND I KNOW I WILL NOT.
Some say it is dan gerous to format MFM drives RLL, and for some that may be so,
but the Rodime 5090 does not seem bothered at all.

I would check with Hard Drives International in Tempe, Arizona. Tell them what
kind of hard drive you have and ask them what they recommend. They are very
knowledgeable and can probably recommend a solution. Good luck and let me know
the outcome.

RE: T3000's and Hard drives... (Re: Msg 19304)
     From: TAHITI To: RANDYBARRON

The 3000 has a floppy drive controller built into the motherboard. Even when
turned off the fact that the 3000 has this built in controller makes the machine
incompatible with third party controllers which control both floppies and hard
drives.

I tried an Adaptec on my machine and it simply would not work. I called Hard
Drives International in Tempe Arizona and their tech support informed me that
the 3000 NL was only compatible with controllers which handled hard drives
only. That is not to sa y that two floppy/two hard drive controllers cannot be
made to work but the effort is not worth the reward. I upgraded to a DTC7187
RLL controller and low level formatted my Rodime 5090, a 70Meg drive MFM, to
91Megs RLL. It has its own BIOS and will hand le hard drives with greater than
1024 cylinders. The Rodime 5090 has 1224. I did have it formatted with Disk
Manager but that created problems with Smartdrive. In any event you should
check with Hard Drives.

I know some MFM drives can be data unreliable when formatted RLL. Mine has no
problem with it and I know that there are a lot of Seagate drives rated MFM
which can very reliably be low level formatted RLL. Besides the capacity you
get a speed advantage.
An access rate of 28ms was cut to 15ms in my case. Good luck.

Help! Can anyone tell me how--if there's a way--to disable the PRINT key on the
HX 1000? I don't use a printer of any kind, and the problem is, without a
printer attached, if I accidently mash the PRINT key and another] key (doesn't
matter which one), the computer locks up and it takes a cold start to get it
back into operation. Needless to say, this, besides being slightly disgusting,
is dangerous to the health of un-filed documents... I'd appreciate any help
anyone can give me.

Just wondering, is it the Kermit term. program from the folks who have designed
the Kermit protocol?

I've version 2.30, and no, it doesn't support Z or Y-Modem.

However, I suspect that since you can shell to DOS or run DOS commands without
leaving the Kermit Terminal program, I think it is possible to run "external"
programs that support these protocols.

DSZ comes to my mind, if I'm not mistaken should do what you want and *should*
work under Kermit (but I've never tried that) and there are other similar
programs.

Probably that you'll have to twickle parameters on both Kermit Term. and the
external programs til both are happy.

Nevertheless, this is a TEDIOUS route (of course, 'til it works!) and I think
you should stick with Procomm, it would be a LOT easier that way!

By the way, I was *NEVER* able to make Procomm's Kermit work at all, after I
tried all settings on both computers (and that inclmainly on IBM mainframes).
When I HAVE to file-transfer via Kermit, I use Kermit, otherwise, I use Procomm.
