Some modems have a static memory area where permanent setup data
is stored. I'm not sure what you could have done to disable the
modem, but I suppose it is possible (using Debug).

Glad to hear that it is working now, though!

Ok -- take a look at the directory path set up where Telix expects to find
the Script files, Wayne. This may be set to something like C:\TELIX\SLT. If
so, then Telix is looking for the script files in that directory.

It is quite possible that you changed the modem settings by writing to the
modem I/O address. Debug is capable of reaching the hardware level. I am not
sure what you did with Debug, but it sounds like you wrote to the modem ROM
and changed the COM port setting (possibley to 3 or 4 -- out the range of
Modem Doctor).

If this ever happens again, restore the modem to the factory setting with an
AT&F from the terminal screen.

something to do with the round metal part on the back of the disk. They
appear very loose, and if I wiggle it just a little bit, the drive will
"accept" it. AS for installying floppies..hehehee, that was going to be
my next question. I *did* install a high density 5 1/4, but cant seem to
make it work. This is not under warranty , so I cant return it anywhere.
I can hear the drive, but the light never comes on. I *think* I have the
special adapter for the Tandy to see the high density drive (it's attached
to a card). Is there any way for me to tell if it *is* the correct adaptor?
I've tried changing the jumpers, I ran the special program (MEGAMATE) and
it tells me I have the drive installed after rebooting. Is there anything
I'm missing? (Besides technical know-how, that is! :) )

different campuses in our system--there were about 2000 users

You say that you have set the jumpers, Kate -- are these jumpers on the
drive? Depending in what drive the 5.25 is being used as, you must set the
"Drive Select" jumper (on the drive) to the correct setting. Where 1 is A:
drive, 2 is B: drive. Have you done this?

If you are getting the report that the drive is present, then I suspect that
the high density adaptor is present.

[A
oops, for a couple of reasons: one is it is fast, has good error checking and
if you have to abort the download , when you restart it, it will magically pick
up where you left off. I am not aware of another protecol that does this. You
also need to tell DELPHI that you want to use ZMODEM. I think that is on the
USING DELPHI menu. Something like "set preferences" I think. It is where you
tell the service all kinds of minor technical things.

Guess I should say, I assume your deskmate software offers ZMODEM as an option.
If it doesnt, you really ought to use a program that does, like PROCOMM or
TELIX and many others.

I recently re signed onto DELPHI and they gave me a telcomm program to sign on
with. I decided to use the one I was already used to and like, TELIX.

All of this technical stuff has to do with the occassion when you DOWNLOAD
or UPLOAD to or from the service. It has nothing to do with signing on the
service and just browsing around.

Hope this helps

Mike;
DeskMate does not offer Zmodem, which is the premier transfer protocol.
You will have to use xmodem, which will be quite slow. I would suggest that
you use Xmodem to download Telix, or Qmodem which are easy to use, but very
powerful shareware communications programs. You also might consider Zcomm if
you want a higher performance program, but I think that it is better to start
with Telix or Qmodem, as they are easier to set up for beginners.

Good Luck, and you can always get help with any of these programs from the
kind people on Delphi with any of these programs.

Though it was unintentional, the compiler change we made with version
3.15 has caused both CS.EXE and BRANDTLX.EXE to require DOS 3.00 or
higher on some systems.

In other words, some OEM versions of DOS 2.11 (notably, the Tandy DOS
burned into the 1000 HX) is incompatible with the compiler used in these
cases. This does not apply to Telix itself. Once branded, Telix will
operate fine under any 2.11 DOS. CS.EXE and BRANDTLX.EXE will require
DOS 3.0 in some cases.

It is highly recommended that you upgrade your DOS if possible. For
users with the DOS burned into the ROM of the machine, you may boot from
a system floppy of a higher DOS system to brand Telix or compile
scripts.

However, seeing that Microsoft is up to DOS v. 5.0, it is illogical to
continue to use DOS 2.11 unless you are being forced to by your system
(as in the case of the Tandy).

I believe that the only real protocol you have available is
XMODEM. You may find a bunch of people recommending that you
download one of the nifty programs in the Telecom Database of the
PC-SIG (the sister SIG for the Tandy SIG).

Telix might be a good choice to start. You can download it by
doing this from most any prompt (but not all):

GO COM PC DA TEL
SEA TELIX
READ

Then read the descriptions and type XD when you've read the one that says it is
the TELIX communications program. I'm offline at the moment, and don't know
what "compression" format the file is in. Someone may have to jump here with
that info.

This is what the above commands mean:
GO : Basically means go to the Main Menu.
COM : Short for Computer Groups
PC : For PC compatibles in the Computer Groups
DA : Is short for Database area
TEL : Is short for the Telecommunications Topic of the
                Database area.
SEA : is Search
TELIX : You are searching for TELIX
READ : Takes you to the Descriptions for those files the
                search found.

By the way: Just press [ENTER] at the "More?" prompts!.

Once you have typed "XD" - Delphi will tell you to begin your downlaod
protocol. At this point, I am again low on information. I am not sure how
Deskmate starts the DOWNLOAD procedure. I haven't used Deskmate in four or five

months, and just can't remember it!

As a personal note: I am a hardware technician for telephone systems
(specifically for products for private business telephone systems). I use a
communications program called Procomm Plus, version 2.01 and I like it a lot.
But I think Telix (which is Shareware) is probably a good place for you to
start.

wonderful!! And the speed is great.......But my COCO has windows and multitasks.

It just seems the MS-DOS machine should do so much more. But it really doesn't.
It just does things a hell of alot faster.:) Oh, well.I still use both so I
can't complain.:) See ya.--Charlie

You may also find that scale of things that can be done is much
greater on an MS-DOS machine. Spreadsheets with over a million
cells are standard (in fact the newer releases have several
millions of cells), word processors can edit files as large as
your hard drive, and Database files can have huge amounts of data
stored in them. CADD programs that rival workstations are now
available for MS-DOS computers.

The COCO was a much better computer than Radio Shack (aka. Tandy)
ever let on. With the proper operating system, an Intel powered
computer can do Multi-tasking and Multi-User and Multi-Window
applications. Microsoft has been slow to move away from DOS (for
good economic reasons) toward a more powerfull OS. The fact that
PC/AT class computers can run UNIX is a good indicator of how
much power is underneath the hood.

But I know what you mean. I doesn't seem like much of a leap (at
least at first). When Tandy put the COCO III on sale last year I
almost added one to my home environment. I decided against the
purchase, though, because of the lack of support Tandy would give
the COCO in the future.

BTW, have you seen what the Tandy 4033 can do? You'd swear it
was a Mini computer (as opposed to the Micro that it is).

Actually, the VGA bug fix dosen't reside in memory. All it does is to update

Also, you only need to mess with the switch if you are using a mono graphics

The 68xxx series may be more powerful. I don't know for sure. I
do know that support for the Intel family of processors, for the
consumer market, is much greater. Motorola suffered early with a
delivery problem (couldn't supply enough?) and Intel jumped
ahead. Which do you buy, the Ferrari at $75,000 or the Corvette
at $35,000? That's how it appeared pretty early, the Motorola
chip was too scarce to claim the market.

As far as software goes, you should have no problems with the
RLX. You'll be limited to XT compatible hardware, though (I
think). I forget how many slots the RLX has, but it may be
limited there as well. But you will probably find that the RLX
will last a long time. My T-1000 SX I bought in 1986 is still
running and never had any shop maintenance (O.K, so I am
qualified to do a lot of my own, but it never needed any).

Tandy is a big enough name that you can find plenty of suppliers.
PCM magazine is a recommended buy. The advertisers in there
specialize at providing resonably priced ADD-INs for your
machine. Plus, Tandy's TRS-80 2000 hurt Tandy's reputation for
clone computers (in fact they were trying not to be a clone with
that one). And since then non-Tandy owners have delighted in
tormenting T-1000 owners.

So far my T-3000 has accepted all the cards I've put in it.
(Although the 8 bit VGA wasn't appreciated by my CADD program! So
I stuck a 16 bit card in instead) Lets put it another way, how
many of the clones have their own SIG on Delphi?

Did your batch file look something like this:

echo AT DT nxx-xxxx; >com2:
echo Press any key to disconnect modem.
pause >nul
echo ath0 >com2:

Replace nxx-xxxx with the phone number.

I tested that, it works for my setup. I've assumed that the modem uses the
Hayes commands set, if it does not, correct as appropriate. You could possibly
replace nxx-xxxx with "%1" so that you can specify the number from the command
line:

echo ATDT %1; >COM2:
echo Press any key to disconnect modem.
pause >nul
echo AT H0 >COM2:

If your batch program does this already, perhaps the com port has a conflict on
it. I presume you know for a fact that you use COM2 for the modem, since you
have successfully connected to Delphi. And that you can access that same modem
with a comm program.

I didn't try very hard, but I did not duplicate the error message, so something
about my setup is different from yours (maybe).

Don't worry too much about the fact that there is no apparent reasoning for
the type of processor. Tandy 1000 machines have changed to more powerful
processors to remaing competetive in the home market. The 1000 series systems
are all PC/PC-XT compatables due to their having a PC/PC-XT bus on their
motherboards. The 2000 series were non-compatable with any IBM machine.
The 3000 is a PC-AT compatable machine with an 80286. The higher numbered
systems do not seem to have IBM equivalent counterparts, but maybe someone
else can add more information on that point. Although it would not be logical
one could build an XT compatable with an 80386SX chip.

When buying a new computer a PC-AT (ISA BUS) class machine should be the entry
point, with careful consideration given to EISA, or microchannel machines.
My Tandy 1000-TL will always be a beginners machine.

On the nine pin RS-232 connectors pin 5 is connected to ground.
So maybe a 25 to 9 pin adapter and a serial cable is all you
need!

In case you are courious about the pin out of the 9 pin
connector. Here is a short diagram

+--1----------+
 \ O O O O O /
  \ O O O O /
   +-------+

"IBM / AT Style RS-232 Interface"
+-----------------------------------+
| pin | designation |
+=====+=============================+
| 1 | (DCD) - Data Carrier Detect |
| 2 | (RD) - Received Data |
| 3 | (TD) - Transmitted Data |
| 4 | (DTR) - Data Terminal Ready |
| 5 | Signal Ground |
| 6 | (DSR) - Data Set Ready |
| 7 | (RTS) - Request To Send |
| 8 | (CTS) - Clear To Send |
| 9 | (RI) - Ring Indicator |
+-----------------------------------+

I forget the exact command, but you then use MODE to reassign LTP1 to the
appropriate COMx port.

Something like:

MODE COM1: 1200 n 8 1
MODE LPT1:=COM1

I think you have to do the
MODE COM1: 1200 n 8 1
before you do the
MODE LPT1:=COM1

And of course you should adjust the COMx to the appropriate port, and the 1200
rate to the appropriate rate.

First, the card that goes into the RL's slot makes for a tight fit with the
connector cable attached. In fact, it isn't possible for the cable to exit
the RL thru the rear opening. I had to lead the cable out over the back of
the RL and place the cover on top of it. So far I haven't had any hardware

running there really isn't enough conventional memory to laod the EMS driver
and get GW to load as well. And when it does load (without the driver) it
tends to crash when more files are opened.

Oddly enough, when I configure with the board drivers and a ramdisk set up
along with the files=130 and buffers=30 as DRDOS requires, GW loads and seems
to be running well enough as I write this.I think it seems the ram disk as it
starts up and swaps some of its files into the expanded memory as it starts
up. Still its a tight fit!

I'm going to try QRAM with DRDOS to load some of the system into the EMS
memory to get more conventional memory. Hopefully I'll have some good news
to report later. In the meantime I'll keep experimenting. If there are any
ideas out there I'd love to hear them!

You might check out the Tandy specific magizines (specifically

However, I stopped using Deskmate, so didn't make the purchase.

I know Radio Shack sells Q&A Write for Deskmate (I'm thinking

in one of the Tandy specific magazines (like PCM).

Stop by a Radio Shack store and check it out.

     From: SANDLINJ To: EKIMGENIS

The RL must have Deskmate in ROM. Microsoft DOS 5.0 doesn't know
about the Tandy Deskmate in ROM (Deskmate from disk works fine)
so the ROM seems to disappear. It's likely that the people at
Radio Shack would have installed the Disk version of Deskmate on
your hard drive (if you have one) to "Fix" the problem.

I like MS-DOS 5.0's editor and DOSSHELL. Since the RL uses an
80286 you should be able to use the High Memory option (to load
DOS high, which would give you more conventional memory). Plus,
as far as I can tell, MS-DOS 5.0 is as clean (no bugs) as any
other MS-DOS version.

I have the Norton Utilities - So yes, a lot of functionality is
duplicated (and I use the Norton versions).

Hi everyone. Could someone please help me get rid of this fear I have that I
have just purchased a $75.00 paperweight! Namely a Tandy 1000HX.

Mainly, is there a source of reasonably priced expansion cards for it, or can
something be rigged to use standard IBM type cards? Especially interested in
connecting an RS232 card.

What is the pinout of the printer port on the thing. It doesn't use the same
connector as a PC, but I have a cable and it does work to a printer. But I am
thinking about buying the $89.00 video digitizer that was published in the Dec.

and the pinout so that I can make a cable to connect it to the digitizer.

Thanks in advance for any help.

In my personal opinion, the HX is worth $75. And yes you can put
in expansion cards - but there is a catch, you have to buy
special expansion cards! :(

Now the good news: Check out PCM magazine (at your local news
stand or book seller). They have scads of adds (to quote Jim
Reed) for Tandy 1000 HX (and EX) computers.

In fact, I think I have a "Plus" RS-232 card around here
somewhere. ("Plus" is what Tandy called their proprietary
expasion slot). It might be installed in my wifes PC, though.

Sorry, I don't know the pinout of the HX's printer port. If
someone knows if it uses the same cable to tie to a printer as
the 1000SX did, then I can get you the pin-outs.

I'm not sure how similar the 1000RL may be to the 1000TL.
But you might be able to get by with something like this:
If you have a hard drive or hard card, your machine
is probably referring to it as drive C; and then, it is
probably referring to ROM as drive D. So if you set up
a path command which includes D, the system should be able
to find ROM. Also if you set up to boot from harddrive,
then you could probably bring up deskmate by a command
such as
D:\DESK
(that is, you could invoke it from the C:> prompt that way.
Example:
path=c:\whatever;d
oops, I think that should be,
path=c:\whatever;d:
If the RL has a setup command/utility, like the SETUPTL,
you could probably run that and set up to boot from disk
so that at least you can do commands from the C:> prompt.
Good luck!

series? I am wondering if one can use DOS 5.0 to load the system into that
extra memory. I realize that it is not configured as expanded or extended
memory, but has anyone tried it?

Some reports say that it is used for video memory, but when Norton's
diagnostics are run, it shows only 16k available for videao memory. The
setuptl /a option will allow you to allocate 128k of memory for video
applications, but is that memory actually utilized in that fashion?
After running the setuptl /a utility and setting the video memory to 128k,
and running Norton's SI.EXE (Version 5.0), it still shows that only 16k
is being used for video purposes.

WHAT IS THE EXTRA 128K MEMORY FOR? FOR TANDY TO MAKE MONEY ON MEMORY CHIPS
ON PEOPLE WHO THINK THEY'RE ACTUALLY GETTING MORE MEMORY?? Please advise.

The 128K of memory above 640K is for the Tandy video. Without this extra
memory, low RAM is used for the video. This reduces the space in which you
may run programs -- the 128k eliminates this memory shortage.

Not entirely sure who makes the controller. It came attatchded to the drive.
The drive is a Seagate ST-157R. The headparking util says copyright
western digital when I run it. It came with a program called llformat whichh
presumably low level formats the drive but it has no documentation. When the
install utility is run is asks if drive 1 should be as large as possible or
if both drives should be equal size. After this question is answered, it
start the low level format ( I think, it says determining the best
interleave factor and spins the disk. ) Next thing install does is fork to
fdisk, which sees two physical drives. Don't know if this tells you anything
or not.

  Steve,

The only DeskMate upgrade ROM . . .

                                     . . . is Tandy's. By "comparable," I meant

only that the new ROM has the same software as in DeskMate 3.05. As far as I
know, no third party offers any sort of ROM upgrade and I apologize if my
  message somehow suggested that possibility.

Tandy's new ROM upgrade will NOT run under DOS 5.0. It requires DOS 3.3.
Neither DOS 4 nor DOS 5 support ROM-based applications; this was Microsoft's
decision, not Tandy's, even though Tandy seems to be catching the brunt of the

  blame.  DOS 3.3 and earlier DOSes did support ROM-based applications, and a ;
lot of people are mad at Tandy because their ROM-based applications do not
work in DOS 4 or 5, but dropping ROM support, as I said, was a decision made
  by Microsoft.

Tandy does not support use of any DOS after 3.3 on the its 1000 line of
computers, though many of us do successfully use 4 and 5 -- though at the
  sacrifice of any built-in ROM.

Now, while the new ROM-based DeskMate requires DOS 3.3, if you get the non-ROM

or "regular" DeskMate 3.05, it runs fine under MS-DOS 5.0.

I hope I answered your questions without raising still more. ;-)

Are you using the HD controller from the XT, or did you get a new
one with the new motherboard? <you need an AT controller for the
new motherboard, to handle the 16 bit data bus, and that means
you do need to reformat the drive! :( I hope you did a backup!>

If you did install an AT HD controller (or 16 bit HD controller)
you will have to run a low level format on the drive, then FDISK
the drive, THEN High level format the drive. I'm sure I have the
instructions for doing that around here somewhere . . . unless
someone else can tell you first.

     From: SANDLINJ To: ALL

O.K. folks, here's a question . . . :

I have a Tandy 3000 NL with their proprietary memory board
installed. Right now it has 1 Meg of RAM installed using 2 512K
SIMMs. The manual says I can use eight 1 Meg SIMMs to reach 8
Meg.

I was wondering if I can use the 4 Meg SIMMs instead (I've
never even seen a 4 Meg SIMM at this point), using 4 to reach 16
Meg. (I think that's the max memory my BIOS can handle).

If I use 1 Meg SIMMs, then the second 8 Meg would have to go onto
an expansion slot (I really hate to loose my precious expansion
slots).

Has anyone even tried this?

Yes, LLFORMAT is what you need. When asked if you want to make the drive as
large as possible, answer yes. After this is done (low-leveling) run FDISK
and create one large DOS partition (no non-DOS partitions). You then run
the DOS FORMAT program and you are in business. Your hard card will be 40
contigous megabytes of storage space.

Remember that you must have DOS 4.0 or above in order to use the whole
hard drive as one partiton. Also, (of course) all data on the hard drive will
be lost with this format. You must "re-install" DOS (use the /s switch with
FORMAT).

Let me know.

line, you're locked into their physical hardware. About the only way I
can see you could use standard cards on an HX would be to build an adaptor
cable with the proper ends to run from the bus connector to a home-built
"busbox" containing the sockets for the standard cards. The bus connector
is available from Tandy National Parts (special order) for about $15, I ]

Otherwise, you're limited, as you probably know, to three special cards
that fit the sockets in the little cubby hole at the left rear of the
machine. These are the memory expander (which you need to make it possible
to fit anything else), a modem card and a serial port card.

Ok, I looked up the pinout for the Tandy 1000 SX printer port -
hopefully it is the same as that on the HX. This is for a 34 pin
CARD EDGE connector cable (to centronix, but that is irrelevant).

The diagram I got this from did not show how the pins are
numbered physically.

pin Designation pin Designation
--- ----------- --- -----------
 1 PPSTROB* 2 Ground
 3 PPDATA0 4 Ground
 5 PPDATA1 6 Ground
 7 PPDATA2 8 Ground
 9 PPDATA3 10 Ground
11 PPDATA4 12 Ground
13 PPDATA5 14 NC
15 PPDATA6 16 Ground
17 PPDATA7 18 Ground
19 PPACK* 20 Ground
21 PPBUSY 22 Ground
23 PPPAEM 24 Ground
25 PSEL* 26 NC
27 PPAUTOF* 28 PPFAULT
29 NC 30 PPINIT*
31 Ground 32 NC
33 Ground 34 +5V

That is how the data is listed in the Technical Reference for the Tandy 1000 SX.

I couldn't find a note to explain the (*) on some of the pins. I think it might

mean the signal is inverted (using a NOT gate), but I'm not positive.

I'm also not sure but I think the numbering works like this: The odd numbers
are on the bottom, the even on the top of the card edge. They should count from

left to right going from lowest to highest. You should be able to verify this
with a voltmeter, since the 5V pin and the Grounds are listed above.

The version of Deskmate that comes bundled with the T1000
computers requires a certain file on the ROM (and is not on the
floppies) and won't run with out it. So you do need to get the
"stand alone" package.

I think it was a marketing ploy by Tandy. Or maybe just short
sightedness. Or, maybe it is a sneaky form of copy protection.

Also, you'll find that non Tandy versions of MS-DOS 3.3 would not
recognize the ROM Drive either. Tandy had MS-DOS 3.3 customized
to work with the ROM Drive.

hard drive, but with no results. Is this a hidden file you're referring
to? As to this "stand alone" Deskmate program, can I get this from any
"competent" Radio Shack dealer (we don't have one here in Vidalia, Georgia,).
I haven't seen it advertised in any of the mail-order advertisements by
Tandy-oriented sellers in the magazines (such as PCM). Any help on that?
        thanks, Steve.

I believe (and this is pure speculation) that the ROM version is
expecting something only the ROM can give it. I've heard others
try to copy the ROM files to disk, but it never works.

Gee, they have two copies of Deskmate 3.05 at the local Radio
Shack here! (at least, there may be more in their stock room.)
I'll get you the catalog number, then they will have to be able
to find it!

. . . >>> Looking through Apartment for RatShack catalog <<<

. . . >>> Things are flying everywhere as I tear up the
apartment <<<

. . . >>> AH HA! <<<

The catalog number is . . . : 25-1351
The catalog number is . . . : 25-1351
The catalog number is . . . : 25-1351

(I repeated that line three times in case line noise disrupts one, the other
two, that match, will be correct.)

. . . >>> Looking at wreck apartment . . . my wifes gonna shoot me ! <<< <
just kidding >

I think Deskmate is only available from Tandy's Radio Shack stores.

In the Telecom Topic of the PC-SIG Database, there are many Procomm Script

These files (multiple lines) can be invoked from within Procomm with the

     From: EBRENT To: ALL

So far I have had no problems using homemade adapters that simply carry the
signal straight out of the HXs Plus style adapter to a standard card edge
connector. However, there is no 62 pin connector available that I can find. I
have found a few places th
at carry 64 pin crimp on connectors, but they have to be carefully cut in order
to fit in the Plus connector. It's a tight fit. Then the cut connector has to
be glued since the clips on the side are cut off. So there is no room for
error, and there is a
high rate of failure. If it works the first time, it will probably keep on
working, but if it doesn't you can't repair it.

The cable needs to be about 4 inches long. THen you have to experiment to
finnd the best way to seat everything.

The biggest drawback to all this is that after spending weeks locating all this
stuff, and assuming everything works, you will have spent quite a bit on
shippiining. I have seen these adapters sold for $20 to $75 for a real fancy
one from Houward Medical,
but it doesn't do anything more or better as far as I can see.
The total of materials may only be a few dollars, but did you ever try to buy 4
inches of flat ribbon cable? You ususally have to byuy a bunch, and most
places don't carry 64 contact.

So there you have it. No secrets. My first thought was "This is something
Radio Shack shoulda made and sold for about $15. So that's what I would
charge, plus shipping. I wonder if this would be worth putting an ad in PCM?
I have no idea what they cha
rge for an ad, or how many of these might sell.

The RS232 board I found through a local wholeseller, so I can sell those for,
what, $35? That would make the whole thing $50. Any thoughts anybody?

the RL always locked up when I did that. So I decided to cut my losses and go

Right now I'm running GeoWorks under MSDOS 5.0 but I plan to try DRDOS 6.0

Thanks for the info on the printer port. From looking inside the connector on
the HX, I'm pretty sure that the pinout is the same. I can see which pins
aren't connected and which are grounds, and the pattern matches up with the
pinout you supplied.

Comparing the HX pinout to a PC, only one signal is missing. It's called
"SELECT INPUT", and it is used by the digitizer that I want to build. Luckily
the digitizer only uses that signal to control the power on the circuit. I can
replace that with a switch!

Steve, apparently, you have now been told . . .

. . . already by others that the current version of

DeskMate is 3.05 (regardless of what your local salesman knew, or did not
  know).
By the way, many people call it "3.5," but it is really "3.05."

I'll echo others' comments that, no, you cannot copy the files from your ROM
and run that DeskMate 3.03 that came with the machine without using the ROM.
Yes, you can see the ROM files, but they need DOS 3.3 to work right and, if
  you
have DOS 3.3, you can run it from ROM.
And, no, even if you have DOS 3.3, you still cannot run those files, except
  from the ROM.

Since you have gone to DOS 5.0, you must simply forget about using the version

of DeskMate you have now -- or go back to DOS 3.3 to use it. You will not
  find
anyone who can "make" DOS 5.0 recognize the files in your ROM. So, having
upgraded your DOS, you need to upgrade your DeskMate, too. Else, you must
  return to your original configuration.

  Hopes this helps.

  Steve,

  I don't know the specifics of why . . .

. . . you cannot just copy the files on your ROM
onto a disk and run that version of DeskMate. I do know you cannot do it. As
I recall, though, the reason has something to do with those files you see on
the ROM actually being some sort of "loader" files that reach up somewhere
else in the ROM and pull down other files that you cannot see. I won't say
more on this, since I am so fuzzy on it myself. Anyway, yes, you can copy
those files on the ROM onto a disk, but, having done so, you still do not
have all the necessary files, because some are, in a manner of speaking,
  invisible and not accessible.

Actually the RL has an 8086, the RLX is the one with the 80286. It was the
limitations inherent in the 8086 that eventually drove me to the 2500SX/20.

I see no advantage in running MSDOS 5.0 on the RL since the 8086 can't make
use of upper memory. I tried using DRDOS 6.0 with an EMS board and QRAM on
the RL but whenever anything loaded high the thing just locked up. So I think
the RL's had best stick with MSDOS 3.0 unless you need disk compression which
comes with DRDOS 6.0.

 + CM10 Monitor ( $50 )
 + Printer DMP220 ( $75 )
 + Printer DMP132 ( $50 ) depending on condition.
 --------------------------------------
about $450-$550 (he could get a 286 for about that, though).

BTW, these are my best guestimates, not to be taken as
thoroughly researched figures. The 65M drive is probably worth
more, but being used has to be discounted. (My 50M cost over
$300 maybe even $400, but it was new, and very fast!).

My guesses for the printers are pure guess, since I don't
remember much about them. But I just bought a 24 pin Panasonic

DOS and system Docs came with the system (or did with My

Yes, the Boca VGA is an upgraded board Vince. It has been my experience that
although Boca makes some fine expansion boards, the ROM software is sometimes
not very compatible with Tandy video. Paradise boards are driven by Western
Digital components, and they seem to work well with Tandys. Many of the
"off name" boards sport a Paradise (really W.D.) chipset and are somewhat
cheaper than the actual Paradise board -- these "generally" work well, also.

Before buying any VGA board make sure of these things:

1> the board has "at least" a 30 day return policy......

2> ....with NO restocking fee.

3> that the return policy is not geared toward defects only (you can get
all your money back (less shipping)) - if you don't like the board or it
won't function in your system.

Adhering to the above will allow you to test the board *before* you own it!

It is likley that you can get the printer to work with your system. But, you

follow the "standard" PC I/O pinout.

You will need to get this pinout information to make it work. Unfortunately,

ARE YOU SURE IT'S DCS INDUSTRIES THAT PCM IS CHECKING INTO???
I HAVE BEEN DEALING WITH THEM FOR THE PAST 9 MONTHS WITH NO PROBLEMS
WHATSOEVER. THERE ARE DEFINITELY MAJOR PROBLEMS WITH COMPUTER
PERIPHERALS DIRECT WHICH HAS BEEN SHUT DOWN BY THE GOVERNMENT FOR
FRAUDULENT PRACTICES. AS FAR AS DCS, I HAVE JUST DEALT WITH THEM
RECENTLY TO CONVERT MY SLOT BOX TO WORK WITH MY RLX, WHICH THEY DID
AT NO CHARGE. IF A PROBLEM IS BREWING, PLEASE LET ME KNOW SO I
CAN STEER CLEAR OF THEM IN THE FUTURE.

I bought their high end package at the time, of an svga board and CTX brand
multisync monitor and have been very pleased. Their service was fast and
on the phone they were quite patient with my questions. The svga board came
with several video drivers on high density disks, and since my 1000SX only
had normal density disks, they thoughtfully copied the drivers over to 360K
floppies that I could use. I have since also purchased the 1000 series upgrade
book they are selling, and found it to be quite well written. I have seen the
slot box ads and read some reviews, but frankly wonder why one would go to this
expense when they get to the point of needing more slots etc., isn't it
time to get a whole new computer (?) I wished I had high density drives of
both sizes, a larger hard disk than my 32 meg and was at least a 286.....
so will probably give the 1000SX to my daughter to use in college and dad
will go out and buy a 286 or 386.

I agree the article in PCM was excellent. you may also need to use the tiny
program they listed to fool your tandy into recognizing your vga board when
you do upgrade. I had to, and I have a 1000SX. I would recommend the $20 book
from DCS industries, on upgrading Tandy 1000's ....it gives model specific
upgrade nuts and bolts. Sorry, do not have info on the BOCA board.

Just saw your post that you have the new Tandy 2500SX/20. I just recently
bought one. So far I am pretty satisfied with it. My old TX can't compete
with it, although I have no intention of giving up the TX. The only thing
that I am really not to happy about is that it only has 3 expansion slots
and no port for a joystick.
Have you formed any opinions of the 2500SX yet? I would be interested in

So far I am very impressed and pleased with the 2500SX. But like you I'm
disappointed that there are no built in joystick ports. Not only that,
Microprose doesn't support its sound chip in F15 Strike Eagle II so I have
to play in IBM sound.

The main thing for me though is that GeoWorks runs very well on it and the
85Meg hardrive should last for a long time.

MY TX is already filled to capacity with various cards so I would have
to spring for the slot box too. The total cost comes to around $850.00
without shipping. I am beginning to think if it is worth it, I cand get
get a 386sx with 80 meg hard drive, dual high density drives for
around $1500.00. With prices coming down on 386's, I think my TX soon
will become a doorstop or put on the shelf next to my Timex Sinclair and

little about the cards already in this box might make configuring new cards a
bit easier. I'm trying to hammer in a SoundBlaster card at the moment, with

The specific card I am refering to is an unusually narrow RS232 (serial) port.
There are cards which offer both parallel and serial, or even a card with a
parralell and TWO serial cards, very probably for less than what I propose to
sell these for. The trick is, this will fit inside the HX. Those others,
although they will match pi
n to pin, won't fit inside. I have heard of some companies offering serial
cards that sit outside the computer, but I haven't actually seen one. So, I
suppose it is possible to utilize a multifuntion board in, or rather, ON an HX.
By the way, this is th
e only way I know of to use a 2400 baud modem with an HX since Tandy only made
a 1200 baud Plus style modem. Hope this helps. If I wasn't clear about
something, ask again.

I have added hard drives to a bunch of Tandy 1000 HXs, but I have run into an
unusual problem. I used a Longshine controller like most of the others. This
drive is a reconditioned 40 Mb Miniscribe from JB technoligies. After running
the low level format
from Debug (the bios on the card) and partioned and formated with DOS 5 (the
Tandy version), everything is fine for the first few minutes. After a couple
of warm reboots, though, it quits responding to graphical interfaces, mostly.
Like trying to run Ed
it produces a black screen with a blinking cursor about halfway down the
screen. Same with Dosshell and a word processor. The WP works fine in text
only mode, however. Yet some things DO work....like the s Spinrite graphical
interface, Norton Utilites
5.0, and WOrdStar. Wierd, huh? I've seen the same thing happen when running
America OnLine software without the correct Server setting, but these are DOS
5s own programs messing up! Any ideas? Wobbly heads? Bad sectors? Mojo
curse?

     UMB on Tandy 3000 NL . . .
     From: SANDLINJ To: ALL

I'm trying to setup a UMB memory area on my Tandy 3000 NL (with
the NEAT chipset (CS8221 NEAT (tm))). It seems that Shadow RAM
is diabled on my system, and the device driver aborts (doesn't
create a UMB area) with an error message telling me to change my
setup.

Here is what the CHIPSET command from "The Last Byte" package
says:

        You have a Chips & Technologies 82C212.
Shadow Ram is disabled/relocated - Change Setup!

The problem is: I can't find anything to change that would
enable the Shadow RAM! I only have the little bitty "Getting
Started" booklet that came with the PC. The Technical Manual is
$100, and has to be special ordered, so I can't leaf through one
at the local shop.

What I am wondering is if anyone out there has found a way to
enable the Shadow RAM on a Tandy 3000 NL. (The CMOS setup
program doesn't even list it as an option!).

Thanks in advance.

After I read your post I put in the IBM driver and now I have sound. It

installed on my TX and the sound works just fine with the Tandy sound driver.
Now all I have to do is go out and buy a joystick card to put into one of
the 2 remaining slots.
What monitor are you using with the 2500SX? I took my Tandy VGM-300 off
the TX and am using that. I put the old CM-5 back on the TX.

quite busy. But I do enjoy setting up the SX so it isn't so bad.

Tis the season to be busy I guess.
Anyway,my Procomm docs and setup show a ! as Dialing Cmd Suffix. This
gives Procomm a CR after your Dialing Command so the modem will dial the
number. You also need a ! as the last character in your initiation string.
I'm not sure about this, but for a Macro sending several lines,I'd try
a script file called up by a macro key.??...But that may be real slow by
the time the script file loads and runs...depending on the number of lines
of course. You might try it,who knows,it might work.If you just have a few
lines,(like name and address or something)you could use a different macro
for each line(F1,F2,etc).Hope this helps....again,sorry for the delay.

Should I maybe put in a bigger engine or a standard transmission? If I do have

Chevy truck if it can't
pull my boat.! Why don't they make these trucks so they can pull my boat. Any

Sheesh. Tandys are great computers if you use them within there specs. If

The gear ratio is too high and the engine is too small to pull a 47 foot
boat. However, don't blame Chevy. They sell (and sold, in 1980) a
"trailering package," which would have pulled your boat easily. Blaming the
truck's maufacturer is like finding fault with a fly swatter that you
purchased to pound nails into wood.

As for the foreign trucks -- you will never catch me with one.

If a serial mouse on the built in serial port, it may be a driver compat-

in your autoexec. Of course make sure they are in the root directory or
that a full path is specified. (I keep mouse.sys in my dos subdir and
