newer grpahics did start with the TL. I'm not sure where I got the other info

All bds come with 256k min. With memory prices low right now I'd get as much as
I can. You need a mult-scan monitor for res above 640x480. If your just
getting a std Vga monitor 512K total memory will get you 640x480 at 256 colors
which is the best a std fixed frequency VGA monitor can do. Be aware that the
more colors and/or resolution you try to use your computer's response time will
slow. Also above 640x480 at 16 colors programs need special video drivers to
use the higer resolutions. Many programs now come with these drivers.

You might want to shop around for memory chip prices once you know what kind
Usually 256x4-100ns type chips especially in the newer designs. Check out sept
1990 PCM for some suggestions.

My 3.5 in my 1000sx didn't need any drivparm or driver.sys. In fact when I
tried to use drivparm in my config.sys I got an error message that the command
didn't exist. Checked spell/syntax etc no luck. Tried with both Dos 3.20.00

yes you can use 100ns. Chips go in regular chip sockets not in expansion slots
make sure you orient them right. Look in your manuals they may have a section
showing where and how the chips go.

Should be ok if the expansion box works as advertised. I have what you have
except 80287 chip/adlib card. But I do have VGA everything is fine. Also I
have 65Meg drive but I have to split in two because dos 3.x only 32M max I tried
4.01 and it seemed fine and was able to use entire 65Meg as C drive
it wasn't mine, borrowed from a friend. I also would like to ad expanded (can't
do extendeded unless you move to true 286+ computer) and Hi density drives.
Make sure your controller is designed to work in 1000sx.

Or as you said sell it all except ad-lib and maybe modem.

Another person answering your plea. I'm not sure if the TL has the F3 option
but to check it out first make a system disk in your b drive ie Format b:/s
should also copy command.com at same time. The hit the big red button. As soon
as you do hold the F3 key down until computer beeps. Then let go Assuming
system disk is in normal B: and F3 works the computer should boot from B which
is now A: and your normal A drive will now be B drive.

Good Luck Greg Lentz(Glentz) PS You could just try F3 without any disks in A or
B and See if B drive lights up and tries to boot. You'll get an error message
but you'll have your answer. Just reboot with normal disks in.

Sherry,
There's not really a lot of software other than DeskMate and Games
software that uses the Tandy's Sound capabilities. You can always write stuff
for the sound capabilities yourself if you program any. What software there is
for the Sound Abilities of the Tandy 1000's other than DeskMate and Comercial
games, is probably just the few shareware programs found in the Tandy Database
over in the PC Compatibles SIG. Do a Search for the Keywords "Sound", "Music"

a friend that has an Tandy 1000 SL who reported not being able to access his B:

jumper on the motherboard to a different setting. Remember, though, his was a SL

have since you have VGA on your SX. It has something to do with the interrupts
used. Hope this helps...Jax...

Henry,
Well it's obviously a case of a missing File. You must have that file
somewhere in your path on the TX so it finds it fine, but on the SL/2 it's not
in your current directory or in your Environment's path anywhere. That file will
most certainly be in your Deskmate Directory on the TX since it's the video
driver that deskmate uses to display 16 color graphics. Simply copy that file
from your deskmate directory onto a disk and transfer it to the SL/2 and your
Print Magic directory.

reset to it's factory settings. Only a Repair center technician can do that if

scalable fonts and will allow more than one item on the clipboard. Clipboard

Give me your address and I will send you some terminal software that works great
on the Tandy 2000. I also own a few 2000's and have amassed quite a bit of
shareware programming for it. How much ram is in your machine when it boots up?
384k? if that is what you have and also have the 20 meg hard drive, there are
many programs on here in the Tandy specific database that will run great on it.
If you want to spend a few bucks and upgrade it to 768k of ram, a program named
T2KIBM.COM will help it gain IBM compatibility. I just upgraded mine by
modifying the ram board to hold 256k chips, bringing that board up to 640k
total, which when added to the machine's 128k base memory gives you 768k, the
maximum ram that Dos will support. Since I upgraded mine to 768k, I can run alot
of things on it like the Norton Editor and a host of other programs (text
intensive) and a fair amount of graphics viewing. I also recently uploaded a
file called TWOBIT.COM to the database here that will view all GIF files..
really a neat program.

So if you want the software, either leave me your address here or in private
mail and I will get a disk off to you immediately.. Why should you suffer
without great software !!

enough about MS-dos a nd IBM Compatable to make a good decition on a IBM

this is not fully compatable either but it is some and should help me learn

correcting Mode like X-modem or Y-Modem etc. I was mainly wondering if anyone
new of a progra m I could download in ASC II that might have X-modem or such.
Otherwise I guess I will have to go Shopping. Almost all Program Downloads Need
a Error correcting Download Format. Thanks though! ****BSettles****

Not in my opinion. I don't use deskmate at all myself. I do like the features
that the RL version offers, but Quicken has a better check book manager, and
there are more powerful databases available at a reasonable cost. Deskmate is
just easy to use, and therefor good to get started with.

Have enjoyed using the 1100FD for over a year. For the price and what was
available at the time I made good use of it. Always amounts to price per use
/value in the long run. Would not mind having the 1500 at all except for the
fact that with security the way it is I don't think it would be worth it right
now. I would want it for travel and with the hassle right now it wouldn't be
worth it. If I lost the 1100 right now it would be a pain but not a financial
loss like the 1500 would be.

DOS 4.01 is now available for Tandy, which should take care of the hard disk

When you say that your computer does not boot, do you mean that you get nowhere
in the boot process, or does the computer physicaly ask on screen for a
password. The 1000TL had an option for monochrome that would cause an appearance

PROGRAM WOULD OVERLAY OTHER "DIR" ON DESKMATE AND WOULD NOT ALLOW "CREATE" TO BE

Did you try Install instead of create. That is the proper way. You cannot create
a Deskmate application under deskmate. If you could, you would have to Deskmates
running at the same time, the one in rom and a runtime version. In fact, you
could end up with 4 or 5 copies, and thus run out of memory.

Henry,
No it's not possible that that file is built into the TX and not the SL/2
but it is possible that it is somewhere on the HardDrive of the TX that is being
found by DeskMate. Otherwise DeskMate is not using Tandy Graphics. What you may
have is a difference in Screen configurations if it runs on the TX but not the
SL/2. Strike that whole theory! I just saw the problem, Deskmate on the TX is
probably got the file named DMVDTC16.RES not RRS. Check for that possiblility. I
know the files are the same except for their extensions because I had to get a
copy of DMVDTC16.RES from Radio Shack and all they could find was DMVDTC16.RRS.
We just made a copy of that file with the RES extension and my problem was
solved. Try that solution and let me know how it goes...Jax...

If you are using TYMNET, you will get garbage characters when you first log on.
After you type "A" (uppercase) this should then produce readable characters.

Tymnet requires that your parameters be set for 2400,E,7,1 -- OR, you will get
garabage "after" typing the "A".

If you are using TELENET, after you get CONNECT 2400, type @D {press enter}.
When you get TERMINAL=, type D1 {press enter}. This signals Telenet that you are
coming in at 2400 baud.

Let me know how this works.

Relaxed Xmodem will help with the problem you are having, but it will not solve
it. Your problem is almost "always" associated with a modem that has poor filter
circuitry. At one time, I had the same problem. I tried everything to get rid of
the line noise that was messing up my file transfers. Finally, I got a new modem
and the problem simply "went away."

I know that you probably paid good money for your present modem. However, I am
very confident that this is the problem. A new 2400 bps modem with good filter
circutiry will be worth the money in the aggravation and amount of money ate up
in aborted downloads.

The ZOOM modem is a very good choice (about $89). This has a "Rockwell chip set"
-- very good filtering and over all fine performance.

Remember I installed the program on both my SX and my wife's RL which starts
right out with Deskmate and the installation went perfect. The problems occurred
afterward when the program was in. It had a special config. that seemed to do a
real job on the system. Got my money back for the program and am now very leary

    Terry,

Here's the settings for the best performance for your Dual Standard. First
of all, if your dual standard supports V.42 (check the manual), issue this
string first. Skip the first string if your Dual Standard isn't V.42
compatible.

AT &K3&A3
AT C1F1X4S13=1&B1
AT &A1&G0&H1&I0&M4&N0&P0&C1
AT &R2&S0&Y1&D2&W

The &w at the end of the last string will save the settings so that you won't
have to issue the commands everytime you turn on the modem. Also, ATZ will
revert to these settings if you want to play with the registers unless you
overwrite the settings with an &W command.

     Memory upgrade for Tandy 1000

I'm looking for information about upgrading the memory of a Tandy 1000 (the
original version). The machine came with 128K (I think). A 256k upgrade board
was added (25-1004 ?). With the board in, there is 256K of RAM. However, the
board still has 2 rows of eight empty sockets. I believe that both the board and
the motherboard have 64k chips.

Is it possible to add 256k chips to the empty sockets in the board?

If not, where can I find cheap 64k DRAMS? Would I just add them to the board,
or is there a jumper to set or something?

I would like to upgrade the machine to 640K as cheaply and easily as possible.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Glad to hear it!! Sounds like the 16550 is working fine. Only thing that
would squeeze a few more CPS out would be DSZ's MobyTurbo option. You have to
have a registered copy of DSZ for that though. ($20 for lifetime registration).

The RL stuff is different. RL has the financial program (checkbook, loans,

other things. The 3.5 is more like regular deskmate but and translator. 3.5
also has an upgraded printer capabilities with a long printer list. The Draw

little good here.

Well, the control box is the key. It is $169.95. Some stores offer a special
deal if you get the whole system (wire, sirens, magnet switches, the works). It
comes with a manual and you can add on things like an auto dialer, and motion
detectors. There is one a bit cheaper but it doesn't have the 4 loop
capabilities. It is in the 1991 catalog, around page 155 or 156 I think.

     mail order modem dilema
     From: PCWORKER To: ALL

The mail order dilema. The following is what happened to me when I decided to
upgrade from a Tandy 1200 baud internal modem to a 2400 baud modem.

I mail ordered a 2400 baud modem through an outfit called Perry Computers
through a magazine and when it arrived I got very excited and immediately took
apart my TL/2, and installed it. The mail order modem did not work! Perry
computers wanted to send another but I chose a refund. Well, again I anxiously
ordered another 2400 baud modem from Megahous. I have ordered memory chips from
them before and had no problem. This modem arrived in a few days and again, I
quickly opened and began installation. Much to my suprise the pins were not
alligning with my slot in the TL/2. They were just a bit offset.

Has this happened to others mail ordering periferals for their Tandy computers?
If so let me know. This is a very curious situation as several companies
advertise in magazines we all love to read that they have merchandise to fit our
Tandy's. Is my situation rare or have some of you o other folks had this happen
also?

trouble with your SX and RL. You might try getting a Radio Shack person to help

not just sells them). This is often more helpful to get some hands on training

From what you describe - the memory expansion board may have 256K chips on it
now. How many rows of sockets does the board contain (filled and empty)?

The original T1000 came with 128K of memory, using 64K chips on the motherboard.
The memory expansion card should allow you to take it to 640K (I am fairly sure
that it will).

The 256K of memory on the board will either contain 4 rows of 64K chips or one
row of 256K chips. There are various configurations of these two types of chips
-- usually accompanied by "jumpers" that must be set. Give us a fairly complete
description of the rows and jumpers that appear on the board.

`install disk' (9 of 10 backup), the install program will see them. I think you
have to then copy them to your installed sub-directory, or startup disk. The
limitations so far are MAJOR, CGA320bw.drv displays the verbage boxs as
readable, and the graphics is limited, and CGA320c.drv displays a reduced
graphics (passable, but unreadable verbage boxes). This is a start though, and
the game IS playable without marjor expense to upgrade. I talked to Sierra about

don't have.

The following information is from GEnie which is another
on line service like Delphi.

Pray For Peace
Lois

You can still send FREE messages to individuals stationed in the Persian Gulf
with the U.S. Armed Forces through "Letters from Home". In fact, now more than
ever it is important to keep the morale of our service men and women high.

According to the U.S. Military, mail traffic to the Persian Gulf has dropped
off "dramatically" since the holiday season. Our troops have noticed the drop
off and are anxious to hear from their friends and loved ones back home.

While you may not know someone currently stationed in the Gulf region, it is
very likely that your friends or neighbors do. Pass the word about Letters
from Home along to them. If they don't have access to a personal computer and
modem, perhaps YOU can help them out!

To access the "LETTERS FROM HOME" system, type the word "LETTERS" at any menu
prompt. Non-subscribers can dial any GEnie local access telephone number and
access Letters from Home by typing LETTERS at a U#= prompt. AND, THERE ARE NO
CHARGES TO SEND A "LETTER FROM HOME"!

Offered in cooperation with the U.S. Armed Forces, the Saudi-American General
Electric Company, GE Rents and Pitney Bowes Inc., "LETTERS FROM HOME" allows
individuals in the United States with access to a personal computer and modem
to send personal messages to loved ones serving in the Persian Gulf region.

Letters are sent electronically via GE Information Services' worldwide
teleprocessing network to GE's local telecommunications facility in Saudi
Arabia. The letters are received and printed on computers and printers
supplied by GE Rents. The mail is then folded, inserted and sealed in
envelopes using state-of-the-art equipment provided by Pitney Bowes. Finally,
letters are then given to the Military Postal Service for delivery to the
designated serviceperson - some in as little as two days!

To send a Letter From Home, you must know the Name & Rank, Social Security #,
Unit or Ship and APO or FPO of the recipient. The Letters From Home system
automatically prompts senders for the appropriate information. Note - Letters
bound for the Persian Gulf are now being accepted for APO and FPO addresses
based in New York, Miami, San Francisco and Seattle.

Don't delay! Let your friends and loved ones in the Gulf know you're thinking
about them ... TODAY!

The memory parity errors are stemming from a bad or unseated ram chip on the

to see 768k on bootup.. working fine from the doc file on the database here. If
you plan that upgrade, also download the files to modify the bios on the dos
disk as you will need them if going higher than 768k or memory..Dos will not see
anything higher than 768k without the mods to the files.. As for finding a spare
memory board, chances are pretty slim, unless you happen to live close to a

     RE: upgrade (Re: Msg 18194)
     From: THESTRANGER To: BABU

I'd advise you against this approach for several reasons. First, the SX power
supply is inadequate for a 386 motherboard, and the motherboard power connectors
are different. With a case/power supply combination available for less than
$100, You're much better off placing the new motherboard in a new case and
moving your existing drives & cards into the new machine. Go to a newsstand and
pick up a copy of Computer Shopper Magazine. You'll find several vendors that
sell cases and power supplies for under $100. Also, You will need a new
keyboard if you are using the the SX keyboard, it's not compatible with a 386

I have a DMP132 - Tandy Model, and I bought the refill cartridge ribbon. My
printing is still not dark even though it's a new ribbon. The blue paper lever
is at 2, everything works but the print is not like a new ribbon should be. Any
suggestions? Also, should the Dip Switches be set on the #2 board, up or down.
I have a Smartmodem 2400x.. Am I confused or what? Thanks for the help.

ogy simply refuses to run anymore. It had run fine for over a year. Also, I
usually start my programs for "PCTools" shell program, and starting the same
time, if I try to launch "Telix" from the shell, it crashes. If I run it from
the DOS prompt, it runs fine. MoneyCounts crashes from PCShell, the DOS prompt,
from either of my two hard drive partitions, and even if I try to run from a
floppy. Re-installing it does not help. Everything else seems to work okay. I
think I might have developed some small hardware glitch some- where, but I have
no diagnostics programs that might track it down. Does anyone out there have any
ideas about what might possibly have happened?? Thanks, Jim Swavely (BENONI)

The ribbon should have been sealed in a plastic wraper. If that wraper never
sealed at the factory, or had a hole, or was open on the shelf for any other
reason, You have a dry ribbon. Of course it could be your print head to. A
second ribbon should clear that question up for you.

     286 Deal
     From: SEAKEN To: ALL

Hello. Anybody feel like giving some advice?

I just recieved a catalog from Computer Direct offering what I think is an
incredible buy at first look. But before I leap I wanted to get some feedback or
some experiences with buying mail order systems.
They are offering a "complete 512K 12Mhz 286 computer fully AT compatible
for only! $299.95". The listing says this includes the following: 80286
Microprocessor, 512K expandable to 4M, one 3.5" 1.44M Floppy, IDE controller, 1P
& 2S ports, 200W power supply, 101 key AT keyboard, in a Mini Tower case.
It also includes 5 software packages, but apparently not DOS. No monitor or
hard disk.
Question. What is the IDE controller? Can that drive a hard disk as well as
the floppy? It also doesn't say how many expansion slots are open, though I
imagine in a Mini Tower ther can't be too much room.
I have a laptop PC compatible with an external CGA monitor already. I would
need to buy a card though. Since my laptop has it built in I didn't get it with
the monitor.
So what do you think? I've been wanting to get a faster machine and one
that has greater memory. The 286's seem to be the best buy when you consider the
amount of computing power for the buck. Should I let this one pass by and wait
for the 386's to drop in price. I figure I could have this 286 mentioned up and
running for as little as $600. To get a hard disk for my laptop costs $500! This
sure sounds tempting. Anybody have a better deal? What about Computer Direct?
They say they've been around for 12 years. Anybody heard anything about them
good or bad? I appreciate you comments.
 ........Sean Kennedy

RE: 286 Deal (Re: Msg 18203)
     From: CAPLINGER To: SEAKEN

You say $600? Let's see...CGA cards can run as little as $49, that makes $348.
The IDE controller generally DOES run the Hard drive, and sometimes the floppy
(ies) as well. Just need a hard drive...$239 hardcard from DC Drives (40meg,
39ms) makes it $597. Yep, $600 is pretty good. But you might want to add a
higher res monitor (usually VGA or 800x600), add another $330, MINIMUM (new,
used ones a little less), and you've got close to $1000. You might also want a 5
1/4" drive so add about $50. Pretty good system so far. Also, 512k isn't nearly
enough. You'll probably want to add 1meg or more (do it now, I read that
Japanese chips are going up 10-15% in a few weeks). What type of memory
expansion does it use? DRAMs are harder to install, SIMMs & SIPPs much easier.
By the way, how much memory do you actually add to the motherboard? If it only
holds 640k and the "4meg" requires a proprietary daughterboard to hold the
excess RAM, they could be nickle-&-diming you by infalting the price of
accessories. Also, make sure that's the price of what you are shown...that may
be the price IF you buy the monitor/harddrive combo they advertise (or maybe
don't even mention in the ad) and the price may be higher for JUST the above
configuration. I'm not knocking Computer Direct...I really havent heard much
about them. But the things I mentioned above HAVE happened before. One more
thing: make sure the system is brand new, not a factory-refurbished one, or a
demo or some other "used" system. If it's not new, the above price might be
kinda high. You may be able to wheel-&-deal with a local shop and get just about
the same deal, without the shipping charges ( just tax). Hope this helps. Sorry
so long, though! Ron Caplinger

Sean,
I will only recommend the place I received my hard card from: Dirt Cheap
Drives (I don't like the name, but the price was excellent). I haven't had any
dealings with anyplace else, so it would be unfair for me to judge them. DC
Drives can be found in Computer Shopper, PC Computing, PC Sources, etc., and
seem to be on par with Megahaus Drives and Hard Drives Int'l. I have a Tandy
1000AX which came with 2 5 1/4" floppy drives & no place else to add a drive,
either a hard drive or another floppy. I was left with the possibility of a hard
card (hard drive and controller on a card that you install into an expansion
slot). After looking through all of the ads in the 3 above mentioned mags, I
came across a 40meg 39ms hardcard for $239. Almost every other ad listed a 40meg
28ms drive for $239, but didn't include a controller (an extra $30-$40) and I
didn't have space for them, & the extra speed would most likely be wasted on my
slow XT-class pc. Your 286, though, would definitely benefit from the extra
boost of the 28ms drives, and I found the ad you were referring to. The
controller should already be able to handle the hard drive. So you'd be best off
looking for just a "bare" drive, no controller. If you've never installed a hard
drive, check out the December issue of PC Sources; they have the best info for
beginners on just about every subject and this issue specifically deals with
both buying & installing hard drives. If you need any other help, please be sure
to leave a message here on Delphi; just about everybody here can give you advice
on these things. Like I said, I found your ad. It looks legit. But be sure to
check about the RAM expansion. It may also be possible that Computer Direct
doesn't carry any required porprietary mem expansion board for the thing. But be
sure to let me know how things turn out! Ron

Hi to all, need your help again! My brother has a 1000TL and when looking at the

mine was set at 16k. Since he was worryig about available memory for games, etc,
I suggested he reset video to 16, the same as mine.

a program written in Basic by Greg Law called buildfix.bas and/or vgafix.com
that allows TL owners who have upgraded to VGA to get Norton Utilities (System

Tandy BIOS and the CGA built into the TL motherboard. Anyway, the PCM990.exe
file I downloaded here didn't have the program. It was supposed to be part of

Hi Jeff,
Just got your message. I have been busy with work and the new baby,
and that is also work. We have all been sick too.

My 32Meg HD came from Megahaus. I bought it in 1989 and it has been
a royal pain. I have lost about 720K in bad clusters. The drive has a
built in autopark device that squeeks like a mouse - maybe part of the
problem. I never know when a crash is going to happen during a save so
that's why I have started making direct saves to my floppies.

I am not much of a mailorder person myself and I probably should
have called them (Megahaus) again, but the first time they said reformat
it lasted 5 weeks. That was past their 30 day refund guarantee. I gave up.

I have been interested in the unit listed in PCM by Aerocomp. It
looks much nicer than mine. I like the way the round cable plugs in to
both units instead of the way the ribbon cable connects on mine. In order
to move anything you have to remove the controller card.

Have you heard anything about Aerocomp's HD. If I could afford one
I would get it. Oh well, back to the OLD GRINDER {HA HA - grin}.

     From: CAPLINGER To: JAXOMSTEVE

Hey, Jax. No, that's not a typo, it really IS a T1000AX. The AX was never
marketed by RS; it was the prototype of the SX (according to Tandy Service) and
never really made it to market until recently. I got mine from McDuff's
Electronics (another subsidiary of Tandy) in Clearwater, Fla, about 1.5 years
ago. To makes matters worse, all documentation with the computer refers to the
base model of the AX, which originally only had 384K. This one has: 640k
installed on main board, two 5 1/4" floppies (case only has room for those 2), 2
joystick ports, light pen port, standard Tandy parallel port, and 5 open
expansion slots, CM5 monitor, DOS 3.2 w/GWBASIC, and is XT-compatible (about as
compatible as all Tandy's). It's actually a decent system for the $800 or so I
bought it for. I have since added an XT-IO card, 2400bps modem, and 40meg
hardcard, and still have 3 slots open (full length). I would still like to add a
1.44meg floppy, but according too
Tandy, "the internal curcuitry doesn't support" this. I hope they just mean I
need a new bios. Oh, I have also changed the 8088-2 for a 10mhz NEC V20, and
have altered the refresh rate of the DRAM so I now get approximately twice the
speed of the system from when I first got it. Just another one to add to your
knowledge of Tandy's! Ron

Gee! Thanks for the Info Ron! I was close though with the typo stuff. The 1000
(A) was right before the SX/TX combo in Tandy History, so if the AX is an SX
prototype it fits right in between the two. Must be nice having 5 FULL SLOTS and
you say FULL LENGTH as well? My poor ol' 1000(A) could only dream of such
nifties! Even my new Tandy 1000 TL will still only take maximum length cards of
8 or 10 inches (Whatever they are they aren't full length). Well Chat at ya

RE: 128k upgrade (Re: Msg 18234)
     From: THESTRANGER To: BRUTIS

I assume you're talking about the TL series upgrade to 768K. What this upgrade
does is use that extra 128K for your video memory so that you have more free RAM
for program use.

To have memory available for 4DOS to use as swapping space, you have to have an
EMS memory card. This is the only option available to you on the 1000 series
machines.

If you're willing to give up some of your program space, and you don't have any
programs that require a lot of RAM, you can create a ramdisk (see the DOS

Hi, Deaner. There are utilities in the Utilities database that will perform this
wonderful feat of magic. I don't know the names of them, but I seem to recall
seeing 2 of the I just checked and found QDRAM, and I think I have another that
I downloaded from another board that is a LOT simpler. I will upload it tonight
or tomorrow night as soon as I have figured out how to do it. This other one,
called REFRESH, is menu-driven and will take about 2 hours (I only have 640K, so
if you've got more, it might take longer) to test for the best value to change
it to. It will create about a 14-byte .COM file to load at startup. Don;t expect
a great difference right away. I have so far only increased it by 45% and only
ran it for an hour; I think I can increase it if I can find the time to finish
testing values. I will also see about any other refresh-rate changers. Otay,

Video Memory on the TL/2 is setup slightly different than the original TL. I
have a few programs that will do 640x200x16 Color screen modn my TL mode on my
TL that mess up royally in the TL/2. Tandy did something funkey with the TL/2's
Video Memory that makes it a little different when it comes to protecting Video
Memory for those High Res Graphics screens. Deskmate also uses the 640x200x16
Color screen mode for it's graphics so that's where tha conflict is.

I Hope there is someone out there with the sam interest as I have right now and
has more experience at it then me. I was out shopping for a hand scanner and I
find that the one I was interested in isn't directly compatibly with the machine
I'm running. I run a Tandy 1000TX with 21 meg HD and a 1200 baud modem internal.
When I say directly compatably I mean that the Tech department of COMPUADD tells
me that the scanner they have which includes the software, will work, but it
won't fit into the case of the computer. He told me that he knew of a guy with
the same desire I have, had to bend the metal tabs, which extend 1/4" above the
top of the opening. thus of course voiding the waranty. But it works. Any one
out there with any ideas, or a scanner the will work in this computer? The one
I'm talking about is the HS3000 scanner with soft ware and programing to handle
text and graphics. Sells for $199. -----Jim J

Steve, I have been reading your info in forum about memory upgrade to 768k on
tl/2, and just put a kit in mine. In prev msgs others said they didn't see any
indication of the new memory. Well, when i changed my video memory to 128k, and
rebooted, sure enough there it was - 768k in system!
I also saw notes to the effect that there is no diff in stats when doing a
chkdsk - but now I have 655,360k total mem, and 588,032k avail to other progs.
I don't know but could it be that others are using chips that are NOT quit
right w/Tandy? I bought my set of 4 from DoDads for Tandy(Megahaus), and only pd
$15 + shipping. One final ?, do I only show 588k avail for other progs because
of the 128k video?, or is there something I can do to get this figure closer to
640k?

     From: CAPLINGER To: GOODIEG

Here I go butting in again...just tell me to stop & I will. The 588k is about
right. The missing memory is dedicated to the operating system. If a program
calls for 640k, it is including the DOS memory in this figure, so you're all
right there. You can try to free up a few more k (but not much) by using 4DOS
instead of the normal DOS COMMAND.COM. 4DOS is almost 99% compatible with
COMMAND.COM and will swap itself out to extended or expanded memory or to a hard
disk to free up a little more memory. Please note that it is Shareware and since
COMMAND.COM came with your DOS, you're probably better off to stick with it.
4DOS has a lot of functions built-in so that you don't need as many TSR's in RAM
and when combined with the swapping function, actually it CAN give you more
memory to run things & still give you some of those TSR functions. Ron in
Raleigh

     From: JAXOMSTEVE To: GOODIEG

Bill,
You'll never have an actual 640K on any DOS machine because your SYS files
and COMMAND.COM take up some memory. Depending on your DOS version this can be a
lot or a little. You've got first off, MSDOS.SYS and IO.SYS or their equivalent
files. These two files are the hidden files written to a Disk when you use the
SYS.COM program on your DOS disk. In other words, this is the basic system
operating software that get's loaded even before command.com. You will also have
memory used up by device files in your CONFIG.SYS file like ANSI.SYS RAMDISK.SYS
etcetra. 588K is pretty good and you'll not likely run into any problems with
anything not running unless it's needing to actually break the DOS 640K barrier
and then you'll need to get an EMS board like the Micro Mainframe board which
goes up to 2 Meg. Gee! Did this answer your question? Well, Hope it is helpful.
Chat at ya later...Jax...

Tony,
The Tandy 1000 EX needs a special controller for an External HD there are
many advertisers in PCM magazine for Tandy owners. I reccommend that you pick up
a copy at your local B'Dalton or Waldon Booksellers and check out the ads.
You'll then have a better idea of what controller your father needs and even if
you don't order from them, they may have more info on the specific card he
needs, which you may be able to get through your own company. Hope this helps.

There sure is. How much do you know about DOS ? You can write a batch file to do
all that for you automaticaly, plus return to where you were. These batch files
can be "executed" under deskmate by using the create option to form a selection
box on the screen. Also, there are two menus on deskmate. to get the second menu
press the <ctrl> key and "T" at the same time. You will then have the option of
looking at any directory you want. Just hit <esc> then point to a subdirectoy
from the list on the left, or a drive from the top of the screen. To look at the
origional menu again press <ctrl> & "M" at the same time.

Yes, Ymodem-G is a little bit faster. I tend to stick to Zmodem because
Ymodem-G gains it's speed because it doesn't do any error correction. If there
is one single error in a Ymodem-G transfer, it will abort and you have to start
all over again. The DSZ MobyTurbo Zmodem gives transfer rates that are the same
or in some cases better than Ymodem-G, but you don't sacrifice the error
correction in the process.

The main thing to be concerned about` (assuming the drive works) is making sure
that it dosen't conflict with anything else. According to the manual for the
Tandy HD, the controller should be set to use IRQ2. That is done through the
jumpers. If you want to use the HD as a hard card, you need a controller that is
set up to get power from the card slot.

Tony,
I don't have an EX myself, but from what I've seen in PCM, the card has to
be made specially for the EX due to it's Case design. It still uses basically
the same hardware as a normal PC, it just has to be put on a card that will plug

advertisers in PCM. MegaHaus and Micro systems both served me well in my Hard

their 1 800 tech number (I made many calls due to my complete lack of any

the second drive to the HardCard. Hope this helps put you on the right

Internet routing can be a bear sometimes....as a UNIX systems programmer, I
could explain the reasons to you, but it would bore you to tears! *grin* I
would be happy to help you find a foolproof route. The best way to do this ios
send me a Internet mail message to jrp@bu-it.BU.EDU Looking at the headers on
your Internet mail message will give me clues as to how the mailer at your
Internet site works. Make sure that you include the path that you are trying to
reach, and I'll mail you back a path that should work sure-fire.

As for the second problem, Radio Shack has such a gadget. You plug it into her
phone jack, and then plug the phone into it. If she picks up the phone, she
gets nothing if someone else is on the line.

     T3000HD

I have (or at least my parents have) two T3000HD's and I am having nothing but
problems getting the necessary support from our local RS. I recently purchased
a third party 101-key keyboard for their machine and it di dn't work. I went to
a different comp. store and asked a friend who is also a tech. and he suggested
upgrading the keyboard bios chip. I then went to RS and ordered the upgrade
(after several hours of convincing the sales rep that such a thing does indeed
exct) and they sent me the Phoenix bios upgrade (I already have it).

The question is, can I get this keyboard to work or am I stuck with a $100
loss.

the keyboard is a FC-3001 by Focus.
