I agree with the fact that Tandy costs too much when trying to upgrade to 386s
Their low end machines (old EX and HX) offer a good start since you can spend a
little at a time, but when you're ready to move up-so long Tandy! That is my
position now as I am shopping for a 386 now, and plan to get rid of my EX which
I have upgraded to it's max. I am extremely displeased with the warranty Tandy
offers to Don't they have more faith in their products than that!? I presently
have a 1200 baud plus modem that died about 2 months ago-it was onlyabout 8-9
months old, but way past the 90 day warranty Tandy gives. My next system will
have a longer warranty on everything!

WHEW! That is some query! Let me answer a few of these for you. Hit me again

1- You will not damage the EPROM

2- As long as both monitors have power (turned on), you will not damage them
by switching signals from one to the other.

3- Try using the MODE MONO command with your 80C86 and mono monitor.

     RE: modems (Re: Msg 17719)
     From: THESTRANGER To: TERRYW

I have a USRobotics Courier HST Dual Standard. There are two models. The HST
and the Dual Standard HST. The HST will only talk with other HST's at the high
baud rate while the dual standard HST will talk with other V.32 modems, V42bis
(on the newest models only), and other HST's. The HST protocol is a proprietay
protocol that gives up to 18,000 bps on a standard dialup line. I reliably get
around 16,900 out of my local BBS connections and my long distance connections
average out at around 14,800. Getting an HST alone is not really a problem,
because the majority of the PC Compatible BBS's that have 9600 baud modems have
at least one HST or Dual Standard HST. The prices:

	Approx. $550 for the HST.
Approx. $900 for the Dual Standard.

Both of these prices are mail order.

Also, it should be mentioned that the HST's also support 2400/1200/300 operation
with up to MNP 5 error correction. So, when you think about it that way, the
HST is not such a bad deal!

The best HST prices I've seen are via the Channel 1 BBS in Cambridge, MA. Call
617-354-8873 Once signed on hit B for the bulletin menu and look for the
bulletin marked "Channel 1 Store".

One word of warning however. Some mail order houses are selling the older
revision HST's at discount prices (around $400). What you get at that price, is
an HST that has a maximum 9600 transfer rate. Which if you want the higher
rates, you must send the modem, along with $175 to USR for upgrade. If you go
elsewhere, make sure you get assurances that you are buying the HST 14,400. This
restriction doesn't apply to the HST Dual Standard, all Dual Standard's are
14,400 (but only the newest models are V.42).

One more note: Since you have a TL, which is a slow machine (relative to a 12
MHz AT), you will need a serial card that has a 16550AFN UART chip to handle the
extra speed reliably. I haven't found such a serial card stocked with the chip,
I've had to buy a serial card and then replace the UART on the card with the new
chip. Older serial cards simply cannot handle the speeds above 9600, and this
manifests itself into retransmitted blocks at the high speeds.

Run a memory check program and find out at what address the bad chip (or cell)

TX is not exactly standard when it comes to video memory. You may need to swap
good chips with the ones on the motherboard until you find the bad one.

Switching the interrupt for the hard drives, on the controller should do the
trick. Give Hard Drives International a call -- they can tell you exactly.

Thanks for the info. I'm not sure the US version of the TL & 2 is 67 Watts. In
the TL manual, it only sayes that the Europian version has a 67 watt power
supply. What unit did you get? I just got my new modem today, and discovered
that my HD takes up 3 slots because it's so big, it is 28 ms and 49 megs w/ a
built in controler, so that should explain it. So, if I need to add any more, I
techniclly have 3 slots, but only one is useable. Plus it took 10 minutes tring
to fit in the card. Where do you live anyway to get such poor phone service,
even in the rural areas outside of Sioux Falls, SD, where I live, they have
touch tone. I'm surprised you don't just yell into your computer to tell the
operator who you want to call. Good Luck. Hear from you.

If you're staying with Tandy Graphics, yes you can add most any CGA Monitor
to it. I'm using a Packard Bell monitor on my Tandy 1000 TL and it does superb
Tandy Graphics (Even the TL's Enhanced 640x200x16 Color Tandy Mode). I
reccommend you check out the DOT Pitch of the monitor you buy. The more DPI it
has, the better quality Graphics you'll get.

I will probably boost the ram again. The real value of the 2000 for me is that
I can use it to do the business-type jobs and be free to tear the OS9 machine
apart and play with it. (I'm in a repair-type business). I have moved my
customer, equipment, parts and customer history databases into the 2000, so I
can do letters and bids on it. Its not quite as flexible as the OS9 system, but
it does the job very well. Now I can start a hardware project without worring
about having to slap the thing back together to reply to a request for a bid on
upgrading somebodys air conditioning system. I will be diving head-first into
OS9/68000 soon, and I expect it to eat up most of the "hobby-computer" budget (
and time) for a while. JohnW

Using a hard drive larger than 32 meg, you'll need a device driver that does
partitioning since there is no fdisk program on the 2000 DOS, Also keep in mind

dir of 3.5 disk returning dir of prev di
     From: FINDER To: ALL

I couldn't find the correct msg to reply to, however I had the same problem.
Doinr a DIR cmnd on my 3.5 disk after changing diskettes resulted in getting the
dir of the previous diskette. This could be corrected by doing a DIR on HD, 5
1/4, or rom. Most of the new 3.5 disks have the ability to set a flag when a
disk has been changed since the last status was read. Some systems d and if
this flag is set, will read the directory. The directory of the previous disk
is still in memory, so if the flag is not set, it is faster to read up the
memory instead of accessing the directory on disk.
Some drives have jumpers to eliminated the return of the DISK CHANGED line
for use in systems that don't use the capability. When the problem described
happens it can be (a) the drive doesn't sense the disk change. (b) the
controller has a problem. Or (c) the cable from the drive is bad. My problem
was a bad cable. I hope this willhelp someone in the future if they have this
proble.

You are right about the 32 meg and larger drives and also it must be MFM.. I am
having a real problem with the 2000 right now though.. just followed Jim Brown's
text file from here on the database, and was trying to get it upgraded to 768.
problem is, I followed the article to a T and it still just shows mem 256k at
bootup..I know the chips are fine cause I have pulled em twice and reinstalled
em in the clone here. the board is also fine cause after reversing the mods made
to it, reinstalling all 36 64k chips, it once again says 512k ram present. Am I
missing some important part? I have removed both jumpers on the board as per
instructions..

Does it make a difference what chips I used? I got TMS4256 chips at 100
nanosecond speed... instead of the mentioned 41256-120 chips in the article.. is
that my problem or are they a typical replacement?

I find that when I try to load the program that I get "invalid machine". I think
this is Tandy's way of making sure that the program for the RL is only used on
the RL. I use Deskmate 3.2 on my 1000SX, which I like, and really just wanted to
try out the "special" RL deskmate so that I could use the screen saver and the

I agree on the price situation. I just happen to have a CM11 that I bought when
I got my 1000SX to many years ago now to want to recall. I did buy a 40 meg hard
card from Perry in MI for the SX which is working great and was $200. less than
Tandy wanted @ their sale price and $400. less than their "normal" retail price.
Will also check with Perry on an Enhanced keyboard for this ol' SX.

Make sure you tell them you have a 1000SX as it needs a different connector than

BruggerT,

My TL/2 was made in the good ol' U.S.A..

Good luck with the new hard card. I read somewhere that inserting a card like
that in the proper slot will buy you some extra room (overhang and all that).
49 Meg should keep you busy for a while.

I live in Wolcott, CT. When they offered only pulse dialing, my modem worked
fine with tone dialing. Now the phone company changed services, (added
touch-tone dialing, I think) the only way my modem will work is in pulse mode.

Sure, I can subscribe to Total-Phone and pay more, but I was given this fix
for the DeskMate dialer. When adding a telephone number to the list, preceed it
with DP. (DP555-1212). Looks funny, but it works like a charm, and it's one of
those things you know you will never see in an owner's manual.

Why do you run 2) 3 1/2" floppy drives when you have a hard card. or was this
just your original configuration? Do you need both 720K's for any particular
applications?

I'm keeping my ears open for info on a VGA card and monitor. I guess it's
time to get the old checkbook out again. I've heard of cheap cards ($150), and
I wonder if they are rip-offs. Also, what kind of monitors are compatible with
these.

Good to hear from you again.

RE: EGA on CM1 (Re: Msg 17851)
     From: MISAL To: CDRDS

The CM-1 "is" an EGA monitor. The problem here is that the video card for the
T2000 (if you can find one) EGA mode is about $250. Given the "reduced" prices
that the T2000 has been recently sold for -- this is far too much money for an
outdated video mode. However, if you like, you could check with your local R.S.
outlet and see if they can find you one.

To read the messages about this, here in the Tandy Forum, type READ 17655. After
you have read that message, type FOL (for Follow Thread). Now, all you need do
is keep hitting the Enter key after you read each message in this Thread.

Oh -- I wasn't in on that CM-1 conversation until now <grin>. BUT -----------
"don't EVER" let that stop you from asking me a question!

Mike,

Oh, well, I think I've tried every combo and parameter with the MODE command
possible now. Some return "invalid parameters" responses while others return
the c:> prompt to the screen with no apparent change. None, however, change the
video output to be readable by the monochrome monitor.

Also, I cannot create the video test screen with the [,t] switch. MODE.COM is
in a pathed subdirectory so I know I am accessing it or else I'd receive a "bad

If you are looking for a way to simulate keystrokes in your batch file, you
might want to try the 4DOS command processor. Not only does it have a driver
(keystack.sys) to simulate keystrokes, it also has an enhanced batch commands
and enhancements that surpass DOS 4.0. You can get it here.

I believe that CDRDS was refering to the CM-1 as being used with an XT machine
as an EGA monitor.. That was exactly what I was trying to get it to do here.. I
do have 2 of them and the sync rate is off compared to a regular EGA monitor on
an XT machin's video card. Given the fact that everyone is hee-hawing around
this subject on here fok of facts, we should ask someone with technical
knowledge on the subject and not second guess the info. If connected wrong, it
could cause irreversible damage to both the card and monitor's circuitry.

     DeskMate3/1000TX compatability
     From: MRATHGEBER To: ALL

FIRST MESSAGE EVER, hope all goes well!
Where I work, we have a 1000TX, which uses DeskMate 2, and DOS 3.2. At
home, I have a TL, which has DeskMate 3.02, and DOS 3.3. Whenever I tried to
take something to work that I had been working on at home with the TEXT from
DM3, the TX would lockup whenever I would try to open a TEXT file. So, I made a
system disk using DOS 3.3, put on it all the files from DM 3 that I thought that
TEXT would require, and then tried to boot the TX at work using the system disk
with DOS 3.3 and DM3. The system would boot properly, and I would get a prompt,
but when I would try to start DeskMate, it would lockup again. I couldn't find
any kind of "setupTX" file, etc., and I can't find that the TX has any kind of
EEPROM. From what I can tell, it's a machine with a 286 chip and 640K. I would
much rather be able to use a wordprocessor that works as well at home and work.
I prefer the DM3. Anyone got any suggestions on how I can make the TEXT on DM3
work on a TX?
Also, could someone tell me what a good and inexpensive dearchive program is
that I can use to dearchive downloads? One of the reasons I got a modem and got
on DELPHI was to easily get shareware, etc., but I don't know which program to
get. Since I like DeskMate, is Sierra's On-Line as good as an article in PCM a
year ago said it was?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can offer any suggestions.

The TX had no eprom. The boss can upgrade to deskmate 3.5 by going to the Shack
store with either his origional dekmate disk, or the manual ( front cover is all
they need) and upgrade for half price. There are some good public domain word
processors right here that you can try out before purchasing also. You may like
one of them beter than deskmate. Deskmate 3 and greater is better than deskmat
2, but still not as nice as some other programs. You can downloan PKUNZIP right
here, in the database. (go to PC compatables databases) It is self unziping and
will work on most (I think all ) the files here in the databases.
 have fun and good luck.
ps I will try a deskmate 2 file on 3 and see what I can do.

On the text in both deskmates, there is a ASCII save option. I have never used
it ( this tells you how much I use deskmate ), but it should cure your transfer
problem. In deskmate 2 you will also tell the computer to read ASCII files, but
3 (I think) automaticly recognizes the difference.

     monitor for HX
     From: JAYSTEIN To: ALL

A friend of mine has a Tandy 1000HX and his monitor recently went up in smoke
(literally) and he's wanting some advice in purchasing a new monitor. He
doesn't want to spend much. The computer is used on a limited basis. Mostly he
writes short one or two page letters and keeps track of various personal records
such as magazine articles, books, record collections, etc. He had an old Tandy
VM2 monitor, but he's been eyeing down at the local wholesale club a Magnavox
CM8762 RGB 80 column monitor priced at $159.91. The monitor has both RGB and
composite connectors.

Is this monitor similar to, say the Tandy CM5? Also, knowing Tandy's seemingly
has a propensity for making their computers, especially the HX/EX series and
1000's in general, incompatible in some of the most unusual ways, is this a
monitor he can just hook up to the HX. I didn't see any problem in that area,
but I've learned the hard way never to assume anything if dealing with Tandy
computers.

Again, he wishes to keep the expenditures to the minimum. (He bought the HX
only because he already had the VM2 monitor and the $299 price for the computer
seemed a good deal at the time. He has since regretted that decision and wishes
to invest further as little as possible. However, if he can move up to color
he would find that of much value as he has found Deskmate2 to be very poor from
a visual standpoint on the monochrome screen of the VM2. Any help would be
greatly appreciated.

optimistic as least... The chips has some internal improvements that will make
it work faster than an 8088 or 8086...but how much of an improvement is related
to the application you are running...Incidently, $39.00 is an absurdly inflated
price for this chip... look in computer shopper rather than PCM... you'll find a
better deal.

The Magnavox will work fine... with no modification, and will in fact blow the
pants off of the CM5 aka "The monitor from hell." If your friend is most
concerned with saving money.. he might want to look into a mono composite
monitor... there is a GOldstar available for about $75.00. The definition from
a mono monitor will virtually always be superior to a color monitor....NB a
hercules standard TTL mono monitor WILL NOT WORK on an HX.

My name is Jason Bucata, and I'm just joining this SIG. I'm running a Tandy
Color Computer 3 with OS-9 Level II.

I know Pascal, and I'm familiar with C, C++, and 6809 and 68000 machine language
(tho I can't say that I've programmed in any of those yet :( ).

I'm here for two reasons, mostly:

1. Even tho I don't have a PC, I'd like to get to know more about them.
Particularly about C++. I'm crazy about those classes! There's not too much
that many of the people in the CoCo and OS-9 SIG's would know about them--not
enough for me anyway! :)

2. I have a friend who has a Tandy 1000, and who might like some of the programs
you have in the databases.

Second, a question for all of you: What is Objective-C? How is it different
from C++?

The fix was relatively simple - add the following line to CONFIG.SYS:

drivparm /d:0 /f:2

This is if the 3-1/2 is drive A. If it's B:, change the 0 to 1.

Tandy 1000? Since I'm using a DOS that supports Higher than 32Meg Hard drive
partitions (IE: Not booting from ROM) I have to use the stand alone version of
Deskmate and now that I've switched to VGA It's not recognising the Monitor type
at all. I've Used DMVID to set the Video from CGA all the way up to VGA and it
doesn't seem to work. Can anybody help me out please? Thanks...Jax...

read your message about VGA. You can get perfectly good cards for <$150 Mine
was $90 and is a standard VGA card made by BOCA. Try to get one that has
expandable memory. Mine is limited to 256k and I'm beginning to regret it.

If you are talking about CM-11 monitor best resolution is 640x200. The number
of colors at that resolution depends on what model 1000 you have.

The newer 1000's can display 16 colors while the older ones(TL not TL/2, or SX
and earlier) are limited to 4. Even 4 colors is still better than IBM's which is
2 colors for 640X200 CGA.

RE: VGA Tandy 1000 TL (Re: Msg 17895)
     From: GLENTZ To: JAXOMSTEVE

The easiest answer is to pull the card. Your TL most likely disables its
internal graphics and makes the memory available to DOS. I did find with my VGA
Card that insulating the connecting pin that handles the interupt (My card is
built to use interrupt 2 on the bus) disabled the card. If I were brave enough
to cut that trace on the VGA board and wire in a simple on off switch then I
could use that switch and a computer reboot to toggle video modes.

NO, VGA or other VIDEO STDS(ie EGA) will bomb out if you try to invoke the
special tandy graphics modes.

I believe that Video Mode 7 in GWBASIC has the same resolution/colors as video
mode 5 for tandy graphics. GWBAIC 3.20.21 for 1000 series is needed for EGA/VGA
support. It comes with DOS 3.20.22.

e same res/colors but not compatible programing wise.

Probably you need to use the bios fix pgm listed in the Sept 90 PCM magazine
This fix tells your computer that you have a VGA card installed. Most 1000's do
not correctly identify the card at boot time so some programs won't know it's
their and cause exactly the problem your describing. The pgm is also in the
DAtabase but I don't remember the name. I think it had keywords paradise, vga,
1000 etc. I use this pgm and it helps a lot.

People tell me that the only advantage that they really see in the wireless

there is a "monitoring" company that will receive the alarm. Is there a
system that I can install and then contract a monitoring company. Also, the

Your message is a little garbled, Terry -- but, who told you that you needed a
16550 UART to suppoprt a modem on your TL? The 16550 is a higher performance
UART than say an 8250 or a 16450 but, the computer sees them all the same.

The UART's function is to transform parallel signals (inside the computer) to
serial pulses. If you have a serial card -- you must have one of the above
mentioned UARTS on board.

transpose alot of parts numbers in articles before. I traced the number he gave
as opposed to the one you have and it looks as though yours is correct. This was
going back to the old catalogs I kept here from the early 80's thru 1990. One of
them lists an EGA card with a part number of 25-3048 which lists for $249 in the

Just an idea...have you tried compressing your EXE and COM files with PKLite or
LZEXE? I've tried both. They will "archive" the files in an executable format
and both programs achieve almost the same results (PKLite is a little more
compact but takes a LONG time to compress the files). The best part is that you
don't have to unARCHIVE the files. They will still take up the same amount of
memory (plus a little overhead for the built-in un-archiver) but some EXE files
will compress down 75% or more. You can find both in the Utilities downloads.

    Terry,

You can try the modem with your current serial port. But from prior
experience I doubt your transfer rates will be above 1000 CPS. The HST is
capable of 1700+ CPS when talking to another HST. Give it a try, and if you
want to get the 16550 after that, here's the info.

If the chip is socketed, yes you can simply exchange the current UART on
your motherboard with the 16550AFN You are looking for 40 pin chip with one of
the following numbers on it:

    8250
    16450
    82450

If it soldered to the board, you will need a seperate serial card. I
haven't as yet found a supplier for cards with the chip on board, I typically
order a card and the chip from seperate vendors:

    DALCO Electronics
    223 Pioneer Blvd.
    Springboard OH 45066
    800-445-5342
    Item # 80140 - 1 port serial card	$19.00

    For the chip:
    JDR Microdevices
    2233 Branham Lane
    San Jose CA 95124
    800-538-5000
    NS16550AFN

Make sure that you tell them NO SUBSTITUTIONS!!! If not told, they will
substitute the National chip with another brand, some of the other brands do
have problems.

You didn't mention if you were using IDE drives or not. I too, have a TL/2 which
I purchased with a 20 megger installed (IDE). This soon turned out to be much
too small for my needs also, so I purchased a 40 megger (IDE) from a 3rd party
vendor. In the hunt for some extra cabling, I was told that IDE drives can be
daisy chained together, to act as two seperate drives. I managed to get detailed
info from Western Digital on how to accomplish this. Before I bore you any
further, it doesn't seem to be possible to do on our tl/2's. I spent much time
on the phone with WD and Tandy trying to get this done and finally gave up.
Possibly it's because of the small power supply, but I don't have the time nor
patience to try anything else for awhile.

8 jumpers on the controller. W1-W8. What jumpers to I need to set for my
computer? Also can this drive be power from the card slot. I had to unplug the
power cable from my 5 1/4 drive to get it running. What dip switchs on the
computer or hard drive need to be set so I wont have any problems in the future.
Also I would like to power my 5 1/4 drive and hard drive both.

I seem to be able to acces it right now but want to be sure on the settings so I
can transfer my files to the hard drive and have no problem later when its full.

Also since I'm buying this hd used. What is a good price I should pay for it?
I get to try it out before I buy it to make sure everything works.

Thanks in advance. Steve

     HARD DISK SPACE
     From: WTHEILACKER To: ALL

Wow! Thanks for all the quick feedback. Sorry I wasn't complete in my HD
description. My drive is a 20MB IDE which was purchased with the system. I
believe that it is manufactured by Western Digital (almost positive). It semms
that I would be best off by buying a new hard drive capable of 60+ MB and simply
hanging on to or maybe selling my HD. I noticed the message from JAXOMSTEVE
stating that he has a HD and a hard card chained together. It was my
understanding that a hard drive and a hard card could not be operated at the
same time. Do those to drives operate properly when chained as oposed to being
individual drive. If this is feasible how do I go about seting up my unit for
such a configuration? About PKLite, I do possess a download of this program,
but I still do not have the space I need to add some programs which I have
recently gotten such as Harvard Graphics, which alone requires around 4MB with
drawings. Again thanks for all the help!!

Bill,
What you heard was probably concerning not having a HardCard and a Hard
Drive with 2 seperate controllers in a Tandy 1000. I believe having two
controllers is too much of a drain on the power supply. I myself have had this
HardCard for nearly 6 years and added the 40Meg Hard drive to it after 2 years.
This was all done in my T andy 1000(A) and ported over to my new Tandy 1000 TL
when I bought it in July. I've never had any problems with it whatsoever. Radio
Shack of course will not guarantee their equipment with such a configuration,

Bill,
I was reading in on some of your messages and maybe I can be of some help. I
run a T1KTL/2 with AutoCad v.10. Although the program runs fine with my CGA
Tandy CM-5 monitor I run it in Hercules mode on an amber Samsung monochrome
monitor for the better resolution. When running some of the intricate sample
drawings which come with the program the speed of execution seems negligible. I
did have to purchase and install a 80287 math co-processor chip. The cost was
under $200 (Computer Shopper) and installation took all of ten minutes. The co-
processor also aids other math oriented programs so I think it's a good
investment.
I was told when I bought my TL/2 that I could not run a hard card along with
my 20M hard drive because of the small size of the units power supply (67
Watts). I am going to check with JAXOMSTEVE to see if I was misled. Hopefully I
was because I am also running low on HD space and am already running PKLITE to
compress my executable files. I am impressed with this program although it did
not free up all that much space.
  I hope this helps.

JAXOMSTEVE,
In a reply you gave to WTHEILACKER about HD space you thought it was possible
to add a hard card in addition to a hard disk in a TL/2. I was told when I
bought my TL/2 that because of the small power supply (67 watts) this was not
possible. I would like to believe that I was misinformed because I would also
like to expand without replacing the drive with a larger unit. I believe two
units makes more sense in case of drive failure. What is the power capacity of
the TL's supply? Any input would be appreciated.

John,
I believe that you can add a HardCard to a TL/2, but I'm not sure it can run
in conjunction with the TL/2's IDE hard Drive. I have an original TL and have a
32Meg HardCard with a 48Meg Hard Drive Daisy Chained to it. I do know that you
can go that route as well on the TL/2 but I don't know about mixing regular
HardCards or controllers with an Existing IDE drive. As for power supplies in
the TL's, I think your correct about it being only 67 Watts. This is still
sufficient for two HardDrives (IE: HardCard Plus extra HD chained to it). Now
I've been told here by someone that you can daisy chain IDE's, but someone else
has said it's not possible on the TL/2. Frankly, I just don't know since I don't
have one. Sorry I can't be more help for you. Someone else here will surely have
the definitive answer though so stick around. Chat at ya later...Jax...

I have also used it successfully on an AST Premium 286, HP Vectra CS, and IBM

30Mb drive on the 1000A. The same size drive on the Vectra was approx 16 hrs,
but a 65Mb on the 1000tl was only 13 hrs. Hope this helps.

It is my understanding that SpinRite II has trouble (or causes trouble) with
SCSI and IDE drives. Your hardcard "should be" an MFM drive (check to make sure)
. If this is the case, you should be able to use the "low-level" feature of
SpinRite II.

Suggest that you perform a CHKDSK /F before using SpinRite's low-level. I did
not use this on my 40 meg MFM and SpinRite locked my machine. My personal
opinion of SpinRite (sorry Steve Gibson) is rather low. It caused more trouble
than it was worth, on "my" system.

disk will not install 'cause they look for the program in drive A and don't seem
to be able to look for it in drive B. Is it safe to use the Assign function,
after boot-up, to indicate "Assign A=B" in order to have the system look in
drive B as drive A?

Thanks.

have little experience of that kind of thing so it will have to be an external.
I have in mind a 40 MB drive from Megahaus or Aerocomp but would much appreciate

Randy, thanks for the info on SpinRite. I don't think I would have the patience

     1000TX and MSWINDOWS3.0

I have some questions on using MS Windows 3.0 with a 1000TX. The TX has the
128K VIDRAM expansion, a recently installed MicroMainframe 1MB expansion w/
LIM4.0, a 20MB hard drive and is running IBMDOS 3.3. I seem to have no problems
running either internal Windows applications (accessories) or any other app for
that matter (PageMaker for 3.0, specifically). However, I do get an error on
startup that I don't follow. When the system comes to the line C:\HIMEM.sys in
config.sys, I get a screen message like this:
     Loading A20 Handler...
Can't find A20 handler, XMS not loaded.

Then the rest of the boot just continues on normally. BTW, this error has been
there since before the EMS, so that's not it (also I pulled out the EMS just to
make sure). In the WIN 'Program Manager' utility, the Info file shows
conventional memory, Smartdrv in EMS and 0K EMS (even though I have 1MB of EMS
and only 512K dedicated to smartdrv). Oh, Windows locks up when I set smartdrv
to 1024 256.

Any comments, suggestions? Thanks, Dan.

This ASSIGN command will usually not work as the INSTALL program overrides the
DOS setting.

Many times, you can copy the files to a directory on your hard drive and run the
program from there without installation.

If the INSTALL insists on a certain drive, try a utility like PC-TOOLS to search
for and replace the drive parameter in the INSTALL program.

the exe alone is 320K+. Oooops. I have talked to several people, and most say
that it would take an external memory board to get 640K. But, one person claims
that the 1200_HD_ is different and can be upgraded just by replacing two banks
of 64K chips with 256K chips. If this is true, what chips are required? I assume
41256s (is there any others?), but what speed? Any jumpers that need moving? How
about DOS itself (v2.11)? As you can tell, I'm not too up on DOS, and my boss is
strictly a user. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The 1200hd is a true IBM XT compatible. As for replaceing the 64's with 256's
I'm not sure that it's possible, but if it is, you want 150ns or 120ns at the
most. You might want to get the catalog number off the back of the machine, go
down to the local RS store and tell them you want to place a National Parts
order. Give them the catalog number and tell them you want the Service Manual.
That will answer any questions you have about the machine, and RS's service
manuals are well worth the $30 or so you'll pay for them.

Hi! I know of something that might help your problem. I believe the program
you refered to is called KEYCNVRT.SYS. It came on my DOS 2.11 disk that came
with my HX. You should have it too. The program changes the keyboard codes so
that it is more like an IBM compatible keyboard. It will help some.

It is installed using your CONFIG.SYS file. It must be in your parent directory
or a path must be supplied for it. A line in your CONFIG.SYS file must look
like this:
  DEVICE=KEYCNVRT.SYS
or
  DEVICE=A:\DOS\KEYCNVRT.SYS

I hope this solves your problems, if not all then some {GRIN}. By the way I
have an HX with two internal 3 1/2 drives and one 5 1/4 external and a 32 meg
hard drive (with a lot of headaches.)

The only way to run RL software on your computer is by getting the 3.5 upgrade.
The regular RL software (that which comes with RL computer) is specially written
for that computer ONLY. The upgrade, which is half price right now at Radio
Shack is written to run with previous versions of Deskmate. See ya later...

for good buys on memory upgrades also on your Tandy's try Megahaus in Houston.
They have very good prices (almost 1/2 of Radio Shack's) and they have a 1-800
number.

don't know if your friend is interested but...The HX can be hooked up to a TV
set, small or large. Through a standard TV, you can hook the HX up through the
VCR. Through a small TV, using a TV with A/V jacks.

with procomm I have found that X modem works best. Also you need to be in slow
mo slow mode (Alt S) for it to work properly.

some of the shacks have a discontinued wireless security system. You program it
yourself. You can hook up, I'm told, an automatic dialer also. The wireless is
around $230.00. The 4 loop system is a bit more but you buy inexpensive
switches instead of expensive transmitters. The wireless requires a transmitter
(34.95) for each door and/or window and it only comes with 1 transmitter. the 4
loop system can be purchased and added on to, an auto dialer, an internal
/external alarm, etc.

I have a chance to buy a T2000 with hard drive. I want to be sure there is
enough software available to make it worthwhile. What is out there? Is the
machine a dead end? I am a little puzzled by the 720k disk drives. Will they
read and write other Pc disks? David

I can't tell you too much about software, just having purchased a 2000 recently
myself. It can earn its keep, if you're willing to do a bit of legwork.

The 720K drives will read and write standard MS-DOS _360K_ diskettes, but not
the high density 5.25" 1.44 meg ones. Some enterprising hackers have added a
720K 3.5" drive, and have had good results; if any of them want to tell us how
they did it, I'll certainly be listening.

If the system is a Radio Shack store operating system (or even if it isn't)
don't pay more than $230.00 for a system with the following:

384K RAM (256K on motherboard, 128K on expansion RAM card in back)
20 Mb (10 Mb in some cases) external hard drive with _controller_
High resolution graphics card with color option
    2 720K 5.25" floppies
    CM-1 color monitor

If this is a store operating system, and the manager tries to be a scrooge with
any of this stuff, just try another Radio Shack. It seems that the 2000s aren't
exactly moving like hotcakes (around here anyway) even at these prices.

Insist on seeing the system work before purchasing, since the normal warranties
most likely won't apply in the case of a store operating system.

Phew but I'm long winded! Hope some of this helps. For a sampling of what's on
Delphi for the 2000, go to the PC compatibles group (gr pc from MAIN) and select
the Tandy specific database (da tan) and do a "SEARCH 2000" to show 30 or so
files on the 2000. I believe that SKYLINE made a few posts there recently, too.

Mike

HI! I have a silly little question...HOW do you know that the F3 key will swap
drives on booting? I've looked in the "Practical Guide" to the TL and all they
say is F3 will display the last typed command line, F6 is the cntrl-z or end of
file marker, etc. Is there a "technical" manual that explains this other stuff?
-Just wondering... thanks, kate

Hi! I noticed someone else mentioned about letting SpinRite do its stuff
overnight, but you can also interupt it in the middle and pick up where you left
off at a later time. No need to have 13-20 straight hours to let it do its
stuff. kate
