You should see a CONNECT 2400 when you get the carrier, Joel. If you see CONNECT

should look close to 1200 bps, to you! Something is wrong. What Service are you

     From: ZEZHIAN To: ALL

Greetings!
Since I'm relitively new to this, I'll get right to the point. I've recently
received a Tandy 2K with colour monitor, 2 floppies (720K, 5.25") and 10Meg
external Hard Drive. Memory is 384K (or something like that). For my own
reasons, I would like to locate a decent BBS prog that will run on the above
system. I've heard that Opus 1.0 will work (with the appropriate FOSSIL) and an
early version of Spitfire will too. I am not affluent (so Spitfire is right
out), so I am looking for a share-, freeware or PD BBS. I've read the docs for
Opus and it looks pretty good. Although the BBS in mind would probably be a
Message base system, I would like to have at least ZModem for any file Xfers
that I may decide to add.
I'm sorry for rambling, but I'm rather tired. Any help will be greatly
appreciated (not for my rambling, for a BBS prog).

     Peace;

Hi Z. I picked up the same deal a few months ago and I have been having a lot
of fun with the old T2000. Really a pretty impressive machine. I have run
several comm programs on it, but my favorite is GT-Powercomm - it has a BBS host
mode too. I sent a few bucks to the author and got his latest "Fossil" version
and it runs very well. I have not tried Opus, so I can't tell you anything
about that. BTW, if your machine is like mine (old Tandy store S.O.S. system)
it has an extended memory board with 18 empty sockets in it. Just plug in 18
64k drams and you will have 512k. Check out the Tandy 2000 files in the database
(PC Compatibles- tandy specific section - search keyword 2000). Also browse
through the old messages here on that subject - there are some people on here
who know a lot about it.

Mike, your comments about attempting to disable the built in graphics of the
original 1000 would appear to be right, but perhaps not for the reason you
stated. I talked with a few folks about disabling the built-in graphics on the
original Tandy 1000 and I was told that the problem isn't so much in disabling
the Tandy graphics. That I'm told would not be all that difficult. The problem
lies in the BIOS of the 1000 (including the 1.01 upgrade). I was also told that
Tandy could have included the necessary changes with the 1.01 BIOS upgrade, but
chose not to do so. A "third party" had also worked on the problem, but drop it
as the later versions of the 1000 series were made with the option of turning
off the built-in graphics. Perhaps Tandy's brass felt they'd sell more
computers if they didn't allow for the older models to be upgraded to VGA, or
whatever standard came along.? Although, in many ways the original 1000 was a
poorly designed unit (placing the memory chips under the drive cages, line feed
problems, limited slots, limited slot size, nonconventional parallel and game
ports, non-standard keyboard, etc., etc., etc...), the original 1000 was a very
well built machine that runs and runs and should have many years of life left in
them and it is a shame that the upgrade can't be made. I may look into the EGA
upgrade, but will probably pass on that expense.Again, thanks for the advice and
comments. --- Jay.

          1 C: 0 487 20.2

          2 -- 488 974 20.2

This is assuming that you are using Dos 3.3 that came with the TL/2, also that
the drive is a "XT" type, as in using a 8 bit data path as opposed to the 16 bit
a regular AT machine uses.

Hope that helps

The "real" problem with the original 1000 series was that the video was built
into the motherboard, Jay. This 'integration' meant that one could not defeat
the video without defeating other necessary circuitry. This (as you stated) was
simply poor design -- or greed on Tandy's part.

I to use GT PowerCom version 15.5 and while they do have a later version 16.?
they have not written a T2k Fossil version this time as well. The repsonse was
that they will not be writting any further support for the T2k as the interest
has not been there. Too bas since Tandy has so recently dumped all of their
store machines. T2k IBM does work and there is a program over on Compuserve
which will allow a Logitech mouse (serial) to run on the T2k instead of the
DigiMOuse which is extinct. I gave mine to my Father with the system I gave to
them at Christmas. The software is somewhat extinct but sometimes they have
some old software at the Tandy Clearance Centre here in Toronto. I shall give
them a call to see what they have at the moment if anything. Good-Luck Cameron
Atkison P.S. we are working on an upgrade of the Dos to D.R. Dos 3.3 for the T2k
although it will be more like a T2k Dos with some of tgthe ideas from DR Dos 5.0
and soon to come out DR Dos 6.0 incorporated into it. At least the interest
here on Delphi has picked up for the T2k. Compuserve may be far more active in
this repsect but Delphi being cheaper makes logging in more rational. Cameron

I recently added a BOCA SVGA video card and an EMS-5150 expanded memory board to
my T1000 TL/2. Ever since then my PC has had no sound (with few exceptions). It
seems that if I reboot the system about 5/6 times (sometimes more) I may get the
sound back.

I was wondering if any one out td experienced this problem and if anyone might
know of a solution.

Thanks, Larry

This was the only joystick that Radio Shack had. Would someplace like Megahaus
or one of the other suppliers that advertise in PCM have a better joystick?
Right now we really need one that can use the built in joystick ports and not
one that needs a game card. I'm not sure what that means I've just heard that
with Tandy's you sometimes need a game card to use some joysticks. Thanks for

No, I have not heard of such a new BIOS. The latest available (or ever to b
available) simply supports a second hard disk. It would not be possible for a
simple BIOS upgrade to provide complete IBM compatibility... the hardware is too
radically different. Itw would have been ok if all PC programmers stuck by the
software rules and only called up hardware functions via BIOS or DOS calls, but
soon as they go for the hardware via ports or memory-mapped addresses, game over
as far as portability. ASlmost all games, and most things with any graphics fall
into this category. Sorry. (The program T2KIBM does allow a kludge for
converting text-mode hardware accesses to be handled by the T2K, but you need a
fully expanded T2K for that).

Select Joystick from the menu bar On the joystick calibration menu
select joystick A and/or Joystick B the "+" next to the selection number

When Adjusting the sensitivity of the joystick the higher the number the more
sensitivity you have. 4-5 is best for experienced (real) pilots.

  Mike,

I talked to folks at Forth Worth . . .

. . . just last week and they called engineering and
got back to me with the message that that long-awaited TL ROM upgrade would
not be out until the end of August.

From my experience with Tandy, I would not expect it to be out even a day
  earlier than end of August.

IN fact, it would not surprise me if the new Radio Shack catalog has a
notation on the ROM upgrade entry saying something akin to: "Available later
in the year," or some such phrasing. This is just a guess on my part, but
even when it does come out (supposedly for $99.95) it will have DOS 3.3 and
DeskMate 3.03, on it, I think.

I've been waiting on that ROM upgrade for so long, that now I am not sure I
even want it, since DOS 5.0 is pretty neat.

. . . at this moment. Since it is only a floppy-based machine,
I have not even tried 4.01 or 5.0 on it, but on my 1000TL in the other room, I
am using MD-DOS 5.0 with no problems -- except that I can no longer "see" the
  built-in ROM. No big deal.

The 5.0 I am using is the standard version; I have not yet seen the Tandy
version (which is pretty much the same DOS with a few extra files). The Tandy
4.01 worked fine on my TL, too, but, even with it, I still could not see the
  ROM.

Tandy told me that they have no plans to provide support for any of the 1000
series with any DOS beyond 3.3 -- but, as I said, 4.01 and 5.0 wortk just fine
on my TL. THey are just too big for a floppy-based machine, though.

The files that you download from most all BBS's are compressed for download,
Diane. This is done so that the time of transfer is shortend (saving you money).
If the files you downloaded have a ZIP or ARC extension, this means that they
are "compressed for download."

Go to the PC-SIG (Tandy's sister SIG) and enter the database (type DA). Choose
the Utility Topic and then type READ PKZIP-PKUNZIP. Download this utility. It
will "unpack" the "compressed" files for you (instructions are included). For
ARC files download PKX361. You will only need to download these files once --
and, you will use them always for BBS downloads.

My SX has a 286 Express Board, a 2 Meg expanded memory board - 5150 - with
software LIM 4.0 driver and a Video-7 VGA with 256K. Switch S1 is set to off on
my motherboard. Using QRAM I have been able to access 32K of UMB's for TSR's
and still retain use o f my ramdrive and smartdrive cache. You can do this by
NOT FOLLOWING QUARTERDECK'S INSTRUCTIONS. Do NOT place QRAM.SYS after your EMS
driver in your config.sys file. Instead, put the EMS Ramdisk and Smartdrive
BEFORE QRAM.SYS. The line in config.sys fo r Qram should read QRAM.SYS FL=2
FEMS. Presto, 32K of UMB's, Ramdrive and Cache.

I found that the ramdrive supplied with MS-DOS will work but not very well with
a limited page frame. Smartdrive works very well and continues to allow
reasonably fast use of Windows 3.0. The ramdrive that came with my EMS Board
works perfectly. Optimiz e does not work and you will have to place TSR's in
upper memory by hand, so to speak. Hope you can use this info.

     NEAT C & T Set in the 3000 NL
     From: TAHITI To: ALL

Recently replaced the BIOS in my 3000 with an AMI C & T BIOS. This allowed me
to have full access to the C & T set Tandy built into the 3000 but did not
activate. The new BIOS gives me access to 192K of UMB's but does have a fatal
flaw - if I write an au toexec.bat of more that 8 lines A and B drive access
takes at least 6 seconds - then another 6 seconds for a DIR, etc. I called
upgrades and told them the problem. They told me I should have been sent the
Phoenix C & T BIOS for the 286, a new product not
listed in their catalog. It is on its way.

Now for the strange part. I removed the AMI BIOS and put my original Phoenix
BIOS back in my machine. I reset the necessary jumper. I turned on my machine
and guess what - it still accesses the NEAT chip set. I have no clue why but I
still have 192K of
UMB's. It makes no sense. Could it be that somehow the AMI CMOS setup remains
in memory and is being accessed by the Phoenix BIOS??? I never heard of such a
thing.

In addition, with the AMI BIOS my 3000 was running at about 10.47mhz. Now it
runs at 13.87mhz, the speed it ran at before the AMI BIOS was added.

Think I'll run a lottery program. This machine may be magic.

  Yes, Wayne!

You can, indeed, change or add a username . . .

. . . by simply addng an associate account, but I *think*
this member was merely wanting to change the name under which he joined this
particular SIG. You see, each Sig, upon your first entry, asks you to join
and asks your real first and last name. If I understand correctly, he had
answered that without realizing that someone could then come along and do a
command like /ENT USERNAME and see what his name was.

He wants to be anonymous, for whatever reason.

If you type /ENT JIMREED <enter> you will see my name is Jim Reed and the
last time I logged on. I think this is where he wants the name change.

But, as you say, you can also add an associate account, which is billed to
your main username, but has its own separate mail and password, etc. This is
useful to families, where dad perhaps pays all the bills, but wants mom and
the kids to have their own usernames -- and stay away from his.

In either case, it can be done.

RE: Dos 5.0 for 1000sx (Re: Msg 19100)
     From: JIMREED To: KATELEM

  Kate,

  The Tandy 1000TL has a built-in ROM . . .

. . . which holds enough files to boot DOS 3.3 and start
deskmate without your having to even insert a diskette. That is a nice
feature; I much prefer it to waiting (even with a hard drive) for the system
  to boot from disk.

That built-in ROM is not accessible or usable with DOS 5.0. If you use the
DOS that came with the Tandy 1000TL, you can both use the ROM and "see it." By
"see," I mean that the ROM appears to be another Drive; that is, if you have
no hard drive, I believe it will show if you log to Drive C (even though you
do not have a Drive C). On my early 1000TL, the ROM shows up as Drive E,
because I have the hard drive partitioned into two drives (C and D). That is,
I can log to it (if I am running DOS 3.3) and do a DIR and see the files that
are on this apparent Drive E (even though they are "read-only" and I cannot
  change them).

So, on my machine, the ROM *appears* to be another drive, and is the next
letter of the alphabet higher than my hard drive. So, if I had only a Drive
C, the ROM would appear to be Drive D. Now, I have heard that on later
machines, the ROM always shows up as Drive D, regardless of how many
partitions you have. (This, I realize, you probably don't care about.)

The important thing is that if you use DOS 5.0 on a Tandy 1000, you will no
longer be able to use that "instant" power up and startup of DeskMate. But,
you will probably be able to power up and go to DeskMate in a few seconds,
even with DOS 5.0, so you might say I am nitpicking. But, really, I did like
that quick boot-up, available by using the ROM.

I hope I have not confused the issue here.

  Sure, Kate,

Anyway, it works fine, though I see little in the way of new and novel
  commands, compared with DOS 4.01.

Those with 386 machines and extra memory will find more, but that doesn't help
me with my 768K 1000TL. Still, I like to stay current and it has yet to cause
me any problems -- even if it has not really solved any, either.

Well, I *do prefer* the new editor, which has been added in addition to EDLIN,

referring to for the backfill capability? Is it from Quarterdeck,
Micromainframe or somewhere else? Also, a product called Netroom is supposed

According to Officials at Tandy via a PC-Link message the only differences
between MS-DOS 5.0 and Tandy's version are the following.

1. Logitech Mouse driver in tandy version

2. Some drivers for backward compatibility with hard drive configuration.

3. A program to save the necessary boot files if you want to switch back to
    your previous version.

I assume 2 is needed for some computers that have hard drives that were set up
using some or all of tandy's partitioning software.

I have heard that versions of DISK MANAGER software prior to the release of MS-
MS-DOS 5.0 may cause problems. I don't know if this is rumor or truth.

The EMS driver that came with your memory board should have the capability to
backfill the area between 640 and 1024K. This means that the system will then
see this memory as being "on the motherboard." If QRAM does not intefer with the
calls that the EMS driver makes, then it will work (some drivers can be used
with QRAM, sucessfully).

Netroom is also a program that I want to try. The advertisement makes it look
like a winner (and PC Mag stated it was better than Quarterdeck's products).
This may be just the program for you. Give them a call and tell them what you
want to accomplish.

all of the 2 megs on the MicroMainfram to smartdrive.sys (1024k) and the
ramdrive that came with the MI croMainframe(992k) EXCEPT<<<<<<<32k, which I do
not allocate. Apparently that is where the 32k is coming from. If I allocate
more, and I have experimented quite a bit, I can still only get 32 usable K. I
can get more k by shrinking the pageframe even mo re, but then smartdrive is not
usable-ramdrive still works, sort of, but not the way I like it. If I max out
at FL=0, I can get 64k but waste all the rest of the expanded memory.

To all!!

I installed DOS5 on my uncompatable Tandy TL2 last nite. Everything went well,
but I decided to remove it in favor of DOS 3.3 & 4Dos. I only have a 20mg HD so
I saw no real need to change OS on this machine. Granted I don't use deskmate
much, but there was no way for me to access any of it on the HD, only on a
runtime disk.

But, when I tried to do uninstall it told me it was TO LATE to do it. I know
you all are sayiny that I did something wrong, and I guess I did, so I had to
reformat and restore my backups.

After that is all said, the problem is now [SETUPTL2] no longer sees my HD as a
drive, so it won't boot from the drive [C]. Once booted I can switch to C: and
use it (even call up setuptl2), but it won't boot from it. I have been sitting
here for three hours trying everything, ie checking all the connections on the
cables etc. I did come up with some intriguing autoexec.bat and config.sys files
though. I can now boot from disk drive A: call a renamed autoexec.bat file on C:
and load all my TSR'S, but I don't want to spend the rest of my life booting
from A:.

Believe me I have tried all the easy things, like finding the original DOS 3.3
disk and using the orig setupTL2.com file in case of corruption of the one on my
HD. I ran CHECKIT and everything is on the money, just as it was a week ago.

I am trying to find out what would be the best drive controller to use with a
40Meg Internal drive. I am using a Tandy 1000hx w/640Mem,3.5 & 5.25 floppy
drives and 1200 baud modem. I was told that an IDE controller would not
work, would an SCSI,Rll or MFM controllers work.
Would appreciate any advice on this subject from anyone.

This will be a long one. First, my config.sys file:

  DEVICE=C:\D5\DR\EMS4.BIN /Q
  DEVICE=C:\D5\DR\EMSRAMDK.BIN /B=16
  DEVICE=C:\D5\DR\EMSRAMDK.BIN /B=46

  DEVICE=D:\QR\LOADHI.SYS /R:1 C:\D5\DR\MOUSE.SYS
  SHELL=C:\COMMAND.COM /E:512 /P

 My autoexec.bat reads:

When I boot I get the following messages:

Things that make you go "Hmmmmm..."! Well Greg, you say you Re-Formatted, but
was that Low-Level or regular DOS format. DOS 3.3 probably won't recognise the
Hard Drive as a SYSTEM Bootable drive unless it's been low level formatted using
DOS 3.3 again. There are other options of course. Since you're using DOS 3.3
just BOOT from ROM but have the system check C: for it's Autoexec and Config.Sys
files. You can do this with SetupTl2.Com if you don't want to do a whole
low-level reformatting. When DOS 5.0 installs itself it changes format
information in the drives System area which can only be undone by a low-level
format. A regular format will not fix it to my knowledge. Hope this
helps...Jax...

Don,
There are RLL controllers made for the 1000 HX advertised in PCM Magazine.
One of them will be what you need. As for them running your 40Meg internal
drive, well you'll have to be more specific on what the Drive type is. Is it an
RLL drive? Scsi?!? MFM?!? Please be more specific for better advice. Chat at ya
later...Jax...

The older tandy modems were not "Hayes compatible" -- that is a real problem
when configuring. Do you have the modem manual?

I've found it.. Just looking at it here the other night.. seems like a small

socketed chips and they are fine. Do you have the cables for the card or will
you be needing them also?

I think the EMS board you are referring to is the "Invisible EMS board for PC
/XT/AT". It's made by Invisible Software, Inc., 1142 Chess Drive, Foster City,
CA 94404. Phone: (415) 570-5967.

The info sheet they sent me lists many of the features needed for memory back &
front fill. It also features full LIM EMS 4.0 haHARDWARE compatibility! Call
them for more info if needed. Last price I got was under $300 for 0K. Hope this
helps. Staccato.
