Is the keyboard an AT keyboard? If it's made for an XT it won't work. Look for
a switch to select XT or At & make sure it's set for AT.. A 3000 should take a
standard keyboard (non-Tandy) no sweat. |Steve|

Yep, most of the major boards seem to have seperate numbers for 2400 baud, and
Delphi is one of them. You can check the USING-DELPHI from the Main menu to try
to find one in your area. If they don't list one for Tymnet, you can also call
Tymnet @ 1-800-336-0149(voice) and their computer will check for one (this is
what I had to do to get the number for Raleigh that wasn't listed here on Delphi
yet).

When you first send your Mail message you should also use CC_TO DONNADELANEY,
after the member you are sending to. This sends a copy "back" to you, which you
may then "Forward" to anyone.

If you only sent one copy of the Mail message and it was not uploaded to your

DSZ is in the Telecomm. topic, however, to use the MobyTurbo option of DSZ
you have to register the program. The registration is $20, and it's for life,
he sends you a program to stamp your serial number into all future versions of

     From: KGRIMM To: ALL

I have a 1000SX that I want to improve some. I went to RS a few weeks ago and
asked for a 286 Express Board, and was informed I was a day late and a dollar
short as RS dosn't routinely carry it anymore. I have seen ads, however, for an
Orchid Tiny Turbo 286 Board. Is this the same type of board? If not, is there a
board available that will upgrade to 286 capabilities? Question 2. For me to
bring work home with me, which I need to do if I want to quit spending 12 hours
a day at the office, I need a 1.44 drive. Am I correct in assuming that this
would not be as simple as replacing the floppy in drive require a new controller

Hi Randy and thanks for your reply. These model numbers confuse me, but in all
the corispondance I had with different companies n alll the info I have gotten
from the different companies, including Tandy, there seems to be no way out for
me. The One company that said the scanner would work was "SCAN-MAN" which has a
model number like "3000" with a plus also available. The catch is of course it
dosen't fit the case. The next question I have now put to them is..How about I
modify my case to accomadate the card. Will they honor their (Scan-Man)
warrenty? They are as yet to give me an answer the answer I'm looking for. I
don't know if the cases on a 1000TL are the same as the 1000 TX. BTW is the
scanner you have worth having. Does it do what you expected it to do? Do you
know of anyone else with one that is also satisfied? Thanks again, -----Jim J

In the Feb. '91 issue of PCM the company called COMPUTER PLUS advertises the 286
Express board for $179. I far as I know there the only company that carries this
product besides RS. That's where I bought mine. Orchid Techno- logies does not
guarantee compatibility with the 1000's and I know personally that DAC Easy's 12
mhz 286 card does not work in the 1000 series. Microway claims to have the most
compatible 286 accelerator cards but I'm not sure if they work in the Tandy
1000. One of their support techs said if it's IBM compatible their cards should
work. You can call MICROWAY at 508-746-7341. You'll definitely need a separate
controller for the 1.44MB drive. The COMPATI-CARD controller works with
computers with built-in floppy controllers and supports all floppy types. You
might consider it.

memory chips to take my TL/2 to 768K. Shortly thereafter I was forced to
reformat my HD due to my own stupidity. Since then I have not been in a hurry to
re-install all the programs that I had on it before. Today, I tried to replace a
couple of progs to my e: drive and after using their install prog I couldn't
make out the screens. ( I forgot to mention that my video was changed to 128K.)
So, I went into setup and changed the video back to 64K, and the graphics were
fine!
I thought the extra video memory was to allow better use of the Tandy
graphics, and if so, why wouldn't these progs accept the higher #? In case it
matters, the games were 2 sierra(hoyle card games), and Simcity.
As always, thanks to ALL in advance!
                                                   GOODIEG

Funny, all the people I chat with on Delphi are friendly, outgoing and more than
willing to help others. But then, some need very special attention. Those
sessions are much more expensive than Delphi or PC-Link, however.

There are times when messages "go by" without the proper people seeing them. If
this is the reason for your being upset -- calm down -- post the message again.
The chances are good that it will be answered.

There is also the chance that someone is "testing" your problem prior to
answering. That "does" happen -- I know -- I do it!

If you "don't" have the 128K video memory expansion, the system uses a good deal
of your base RAM. Keep in mind that the 128K above 640K does other things beside
just holding the video images.

I am afraid that PCM's Software Shopper is a bit removed from the PCM
sponsorship of the Tandy/PC SIG's. The programs that are listed in Shopper are
more than likely here in the PC Databases. They may not be the same "name" as
listed in the Shopper, however.

This subject has been brought up by the SYSOP's here and to no avail, sorry.

     128K Video Exp.
     From: BRUTIS To: ALL

In reference to the previous question by GOODIEG concerning the 128k exp. I am
very confused as to the configuraton of the machine after installing these
chips. I also have a TL/2 with the extra 128k. I noticed approx. an increase
of about 40K of available mem after installation.(I was hoping for more).
Acouple questions.. 1) what is the 128k video expansion. and 2) what's this
about a selection thru setuptl2 that allows you to select 64 or 128 for video.
I just ran setuptl2 and so no such option. And one more.. How much of this 128
is actually used.

                 Thanks, AL

Glad I could help Jim. Logitech makes the ScanMan hand scanner. I have had no
contact with their scanner. DFI makes the HS-3000+. It will fit a tandy 1000
series case. I am fairly well satisfied with mine. I use it primarily to scan
lineart for a newsletter that I produce. I also purchased the OCR software with
it but I have never used it. The only other people I know with scanners have
full-page scanners with Macintosh systems so I can't offer opinions from anyone
else. My one complaint with the scanner is that altho it is supposed to be
capable of grey scaling (limited i think to 16 shades) and dithering, the
editing software (PC Paintbrush, PC Paintbrush IV+) don't always recognize the
saved image as legit.

DO you read PCM? I believe they did a review of hand-scanners about 18mos ago.
I know that PC Magazine did, but they didn't address any of the special needs of
Tandy users (but then when do they ever?). I will dig thru my 'stacks' and see
if I can find the proper issue for you. Sorry about the time lapse in getting
back to you, but I hope you can find a scanner that works for you soon. Another
one to consider (I haven't used it myself but it is reputedly excellent for
grey-scale) is the Martek (or Marstek?) GS. Good luck , Randy.

Brutis, If you type SETUPTL2/A you will get to a group of screens that
apparently are for Tandy service people to use in diagnosing your comp- uter.
I'm not certain, but I think if you PG DN, you will see the video memory block
and using the left and right arrow keys you can change this from 16 to 128k. The
memory expansion in this case consists of 4 chips which will allow you to
increase your memory to 768k, but all over 640k is usuable by video only in
Tandys. As for how much is used, sorry, I can't tell you that. All I know is
that after I installed the chips, I then got a msg of 768 system memory on
bootup, and after changing the video to 128k, several of my games were
unreadable until I changed it back to 64 or 32k. At this point it seems I'm not
getting the extra use of these chips that I thought I would. If your interested,
lv me a note and I'll give you the chip #s. Thanks everyone for your replies!

I thought so. Thanks Mike. The Advertiser was Computer Perhipherals Direct. I
was also going to buy the EMS board from them, til the saleswoman informed me
that it would take from 1 to 2 weeks to get it from them. This didn't set right
with me personally so I declined the purchase from them and called Micro Systems
instead since I'd had great next day service from them in the past when buying
my second HD. I'm expecting my New EMS board tomorrow and I'm quite sure it'll
be here. Also, when I talked to the saleswoman at CPD, she was quite insistant
that I try to buy something from them since I was using their 1 800 number. She
also mentioned that the computers were all downa and that she would be writting
my order down. This sounds quite fishy to me from a place that deals in computer
equipement. If I was a new user, I'd not want to buy from someone who seems to
be going out of business or so finacially strapped that they try pressuring
buyers who use their 1 800 number to buy so the company doesn't loose money on
it. Well, sorry this got long winded but I just thought it was info that could
be useful by others considering a purchase from this company. Buyer beware. Well

You may not be aware that the PC-SIG is a sister_SIG to the Tandy, Mike. Very
much of the Tandy conversations now take place in that SIG. As the Tandy
machines became more PC-compatible, the crowd moved from here to the PC-SIG
Forum. Give it a try.

I would like to know who was discourteous and/or rude to you. This is very
unusual behavior on Delphi. Many times, as you cannot see the "facial
expression" (body language) of the person sending a message -- it may seem like
a slam. However, if you could see the grin, it would not seem so at all. This is
and has been a slight problem on all BBS type services.

To ALL,
I recently purchased a VIP 200 AT computer from Computer Direct. I'm
pleased with it's performance, especially with the addition of a 40M HD. There
is one thing that has me puzzled though. Upon boot-up I get the following
message: "Display Switch Not Proper. Press <F1> to RESUME". I have checked the
documentation on the CGP card installed and even tried all the optional jumper
settings. The message comes up every time. After I hit <F1> I have no problems
with the display. If I warm boot the video display does explode somewhat into
large crosshatches. On a cold boot I get what looks like driving rain or sleet
accross the screen. It goes away in a second and I am experiencing no video
problems with any programs. My monitor is a Goldstar 1410 Plus, 640 x 200 CGA.
Has anyone else experienced this error message and tell me what it means. I will
be calling Computer Direct but thought some of you might be interested in
troubleshooting. Thanx, Sean................

the EMS board with LIM 3.2. Til I get the hang of it, and the extra cash, I will
be waiting a while on the LIM 4.0 drivers. I don't know a thing about QRam or
even how it works so, be patient, someone here who has it will surely jump in
and help out. You also might consider posting a request for help in the Tandy
Topic of the PC SIG Forum. There are lot's more people there who don't always
drop in on the Tandy SIG anymore. Someone's bound to have the answers to both
our questions (Well, I'm sure I'll have some too once I get the MMF board. GRIN)

Well first off Franklin, the extra chips that you added to the TX are strictly
for Tandy Graphics usage. That extra 128K can't be used by any other program
including VDISK.SYS. As to why VDISK.SYS gave you errors, well, I'm assuming you
used the command trailer options telling it to use Extended or Expanded memory
and it tried using that Video Memory but failed. You can still use VDISK but it
will have to be used in your regular DOS memory til you get an EMS board. Sorry

Computer store the other day and asked them the same questions I've been asking
all the others. I get the same answers, but for one of the salesmen I got a
sly...got to a discount house and see what they have to offer. Right.. is that
Tandy back up or what?? I did find out the difference between a TX and
TL/2...The cards are mounted differently. The TX are straight up, and the TL/2
are horrizontal. The TX takes a half card...the confusion to me lies in which
way they are halfed. The Scanman Scanner card is a full card but only misses
being fit by a scant 1/4", but I don't know which way. But I am soon to find
out. I called Commuadd, and asked them if they would honor warranties as long as
their card wasn't altered in any way, and it was used in accordance with the
included directions. They answer was yes...with an unconditonal return policy in
the first 30 days. I will now buy the Scanman, see if it can be installed by
altering my computer only. I have read thet it will work in The 1000 TX. I'll
let you know how I make out. I do recieve the PCM mag. I also remember the
article you mentioned. I got PC for a time too.. but can't remember which mag. I
read it in. Thanks again for you help. I'll keep you posted as to my findings.

alternative speed measurement to Mhz. The higher the mips the better.

Yeah, a MIP is a Million Instructions Per Second (actually, MIPS). It is used to
compare similar types of computers, & I believe it refers to assembler-type
instructions, not lines of code in a program. For example, at work we have a IBM
3090 mainframe that runs at around 9 MIPS; my XT runs around .3, I think.

     Modem problem
     From: WTHEILACKER To: ALL

I am hoping someone can help me with a problem. I recently purchased a I/O aon
on card to supply my TL/2 with a RS-232 port for my plotter. After installing
this card I attempted to use my modem and all appeared to be running smoothly.
However, after the host computer came on-line my modem would not show a "connect
2400" but would sit there until timeout occured and redial the number. My
communications software is Procomm+ ver.1.1b. The I/O card is located in slot
#1 and the modem is right next to it in slot #2. Upon removing the I/O card the
modem operates without a hitch. Any suggestions? Any help would be greatly

Can't help you convert your extended to expanded -- but, I can make a suggestion
-- take a look at BACK & FORTH under the PC-SIG Utilities Topic. This will take
advantage of your extended memory to swap programs in and out of memory -- so
that you can run more than one program (actually swap between).

Well you seem to know what MOUSE.SYS is since you've asked for it's
parameters. It's a Mouse driver. The only parameter you need for it that I know
is the /1 or /2 to tell it which COM port your Mouse is on. CPANEL on the
otherhand is a TSR which you can load to change mouse settings for speed and
sensitivity. I believe it's hot key activated once you load it. If it doesn't
say what the hot key is when you load it, let me know and I'll get back to you
with the answer. I'd have to check my docs for it and their ZIPped up somewhere

Tom,
The reason your lines break in the editor is because Delphi doesn't have
wordwrap in it's editor (At least I've never found it to be so. Anyone who knows
different, feel free to correct me). You need to hit your return key at the end
of each line. As for UserNames...as long as you fill out your Profile off
Delphi's Main menu so we can know who you really are, you can call yourself
anything you want. To fill out your user profile, do the following at the main
Delphi menu: Type "PEOPLE" [Enter]
                   "MEMBER" [Enter]
                   "I-Am" [Enter]

This'll take you to where you can fill out your profile which can be accessed
by other users with the /WHOIS SCARPIA command. Hope this helps...Jax...

CD DESKMATE , CD stands for change directory, and it does the same thing as the
pull down menu does for changing directories. You might want to consider picking
up a book on DOS that is writen in a tutorial style. But of course youu can
always ask here too, we're glad to help. The reason that I sugest a tutorial on
DOS is that batch files can be a powerfull timesaver, once you learn to use
them. The autoexec.bat is a batch file that executes automaticly on start up. in
there simple form, a batch file can hold a list of DOS commands, to be executed
in sequence, with just one command. For example , you could have a batch file to
change directories before running deskmate, run deskmate, then switch back to
the origional directory, automaticaly. I hope this helps.

     From: SCARPIA To: MISAL

I took the first set of chips back to the store, where they reluctantly replaced
them. The results are the same with the second set. The problem is definitely
video related, as what happens is that the screen flickers and/or gets out of
sync with the game action, like two sequences try to run at the same time.
Except in Police Quest II which looks fine, but then] suddenly locks up after 3
or 4 minutes.

I'm not a tech-type, but I thought I understood that the 128K would go to run
the video system and leave 640K to use. I just wanted to be able to run
everything through PCTools, but that was using too much RAM. My Tandy 1000
manual says something about "some programs may not run...to correct this
reconnect the jumper", but that's a little crazy to do all the time, and my
dealer said that really applied only to older 1000's.

As for the name stuff, when I entered the SIG for the first time, wasn't there
something about not using user names because we were all friends here and didn't
need to be secretive? Anyway, I have no problem with that, I'm just feeling my
way here. Can't wait til I don't feel like a "new guy."

Didn't mean to write a novel. Thanks for the comeback.

No you didn't have a profile last night. I used /ENT SCARPIA. It tells when

I use it in the Forum editor quite often to find out just who exactly it is that
I'm talking to when sending a message. Just type /ENT USERNAME on the first
blamk line and it gives you a User's real name and the last time they were
online in your current area. IE: If you're in the Tandy SIG and they've only
ever been in the PC SIG you'll get a message saying no such user or something to
that effect. It's a handy thing to know when replying to messages though. It
gives me the ability to be more personal with the people online on Delphi when
writing to them. Well, This has been a long winded reply for such a simple

OK, So don't boot thru ROM, use the hard drive. Use setuptl to rename the boot
device, and to look for autoexec.bat and config.sys on c: . I believe that you
can even look for those files and still boot from ROM, but I'm not sure. In
either instance, you can still use the files on ROM, just refference them as E:
Filename. The ROM does make an easier boot for the novice, but I see no real
advantage to those that "Know" computers, since the hard drive will do the same
thing, and only minutely slower. (at least for the access of a couple of files)

The hard card is presently installed in a Panasonic 1650 Business Partner
system. What I was referring to, was to take it out and install it into an AT
compatible. The drive is an IDE type for the XT bus. I have used them on many
XT's with no problem, including my Magnavox XT which has the built in IDE 40 pin
buss on the mother board, but the question remains if the AT type bus will see
the XT type bus host card it is mounted to. There are interrupt vector jumpers
on the host card. Will this allow it to be setup asan AT type bus card or is
this another thing entirely?

I have 3 Tandy 2000 systems sitting here in need of some use.. but only one of
them has a functioning hard drive system. I have a second hard drive controller
card for one of the systems, but it is not functioning.. just sits there at
bootup. I am selling all 3 systems because they will not run anything I have
here for my PC's that I normally use.. like word processors, graphics and sound
programs. I hear tell of a programmer that has burned a new BIOS chip that makes
it fully hardware and software compatible with IBM.. is this a possibility? From
a local Tandy computer center representative came the word about the BIOS chip
upgrade.. so I tried to obtain his address/phone number.. no luck so far. By the
way, is it possible to use the 720k floppies from the 2000 in a regular IBM
compatible? If so, maybe you could tell me which jumpers on the drives to reset,
since it gives me the old "Bios does not support this drive" warning at bootup
when I installed it in the compatible.. It sure would be helpful to get some of
this information out for others to use since there are so many newly aquired
Tandy 2000 systems out there now that people are taking apart for the goodies.
I will sell my systems in whole or in part if the need arises..or will upgrade
one to make it useable with a newer version of dos..which also brings to mind
the fact that I have been waiting for 4 months for a Tandy Dos upgrade to
whatever the newest version of the 2000 DOS it was to have been.. Is it worth it
to have these beasts or am I better off selling em in pieces?

you would need some sort of a load connected to it.. possibly a large sand cast

a load source since it is a switching power supply.

Most wordprocessors can only handle files up to a certain size like 64K
unless they have EMS capability or are specifically written to access larger
files. I myself use QEDIT which can use all the memory on my system for large

The missing memory is taken up by DOS. Even though you have 640K, DOS uses some
of it (even Tandy's with built-in DOS on a chip require *some* memory, and any
TSR's you load use up some space too, like MODE.COM is also a TSR). Not to
worry... If you have software that requires 640K, it almost always is including
DOS in that estimate. Also, Tandy's make use of some of the 640K for video
memory to allow the 16-color graphics. Hope this helps!

TO: All MSG # 69, Mar-12-91 11:42am
SUBJECT: Good News!

I just finished talking to the manager of Computer Mechanix (1-800-448-1436).
They are providing many of us who have slooooooowwwww Tandys (T1KA, T1KSX,) an
opportunity to upgrade to a 286/386 machine. They call this little jewel the
SHELL. It is nothing but a 286 or a 386SX motherboard and a case; however, you
can put _all_ your original Tandy hardware in this case and _immediately_
see/feel the increase in speed! Later, you can replace your controller (if it's
an 8 bit controller), and add the 'extras' that you want: 1.2meg/1.44 meg floppy
drives, EGA/VGA graphics card, etc. You can obtain the case/motherboard with a
standard 250 watt power supply and 5 expansion bays for the regular case and 8
expansion bays for the tower unit.
This company has tested these units for over a year, attempting to put together
the most compatible motherboard possible to Tandy so that you can just install
what you have now on your computer and upgrade the controller, graphics cards
later on. Price for this 'shell" is around $600.
*******************************************************************************

I called them yesterday and they're sending me a catalog. It sounds
pretty good, though. I may go for it if I can't find a better deal
on a case and a '386 motherboard. The $600.00 is for a '286
motherboard and case...a '386 motherboard and case is around $900.

for programs that require a 286 or the Tandy specific graphics modes. As a true

RE: Deskmate 3.5 (Re: Msg 18404)
     From: JIMREED To: KESPA

  Mary and Ken,

  I have DeskMate 3.05 (the newest version) . . .

                    . . . which includes DESK.EXE Version 68.19 (can you believe
that!). Anyway, I've been using DeskMate since my days using the Tandy 2000
and it's come a long way, but I see no major changes in the new version. It
has a screen saver and some fonts for Draw and a lot more printer drivers.
As evidenced by the Version number (changing from 3.03 to 3.05, as I recall),
it's much like the previous version.

The main difference, for me, is that it seems to run a little quicker, for
some reason, on my Tandy 1000 TL. Also, it may just be my imagination, but the
screen seems crisper, that is, somewhat improved in resolution and definition.

The previous version of DeskMate gave me trouble on my VGA monitor. That is, I
had color dropout and some generally weird color changes occur, particularly
when using PC Link and the Text application. I never did figure out what was
causing the trouble, but just breathed a sigh of relief when that minor
annoyance disappeared when I installed the newest version.

The manuals are an improvement over the last version, but I still believe that
the white manual for 3.0 was the best of the series -- except, of course, for
the big manual that came with Professional DeskMate (that's an older program
  and no longer available).

One of my gripes is that the default color set is so comic book-like, using
those primary colors. I wish it had a more professional-looking "DeskTop."
Having said that, I find it easier and quicker to navigate than Windows. For
all its promotion, Windows 3.0 is klutzy on my poor old 286 XT-class machine.
The latest version of Windows seems to run slower than ever on my TL, while
the latest DeskMate performs better than previous version. So, that's a plus
  in my book.

  John,

  I used to have a 2000 and I really liked it . . .

. . . but compatibility is a real headache. If you have
programs written for the 2000, then it is a great machine and its CGA graphics
compares with EGA, if not better, due to its oddball configuration.

The 2000 will do everything it did when it came out, and for many people, that
is quite enough -- provided you can find the programs. There used to be an
"orphan newletter" called Whimper, which was written especially for the Tandy
2000. I do not know if it still exists or not, but the last address I have
  for it is:

    WHIMPER
    387 Main Street
    Westport, CT 06880

Even if it is no longer publishing (and it may be!), I'd bet that back issues
of the newsletter are available, for a fee.

I remember that one issue of Whimper had a list of more than 500 programs that
were known to work on a 2000!

I'd not put any more money into a 2000, though, since today's programs make no
attempt to cater to the 2000's graphics capabilties.

Lastly, the Radio Shack in Goodlettsville, Tennessee (is there more than one
in that city?) bought up all the 2000 leftovers from Radio Shacks all over the
country when the machine was discntinued, so you might place a call to them.
Seems like manager's name was Bob Friend.

  Hope this helps.

s who are supposed to be the store's "computer specialist". One guy told me
that I couldn't upgrade the BIOS because it was in the software, but it was
different in every game, and I probably had bad BIOS's on my disks. Oh well...

Anyway, I did find out that there have been no BIOS upgrades since mine,
according to Tandy customer service. I have Version 1.03.00. They also said
they have never heard of a problem like mine. Someone else must have had this
happen, don't you think? They suggested contacting the software publishers,
which I guess I will try, but I'm pretty disappointed with Tandy's lack of help.
Actually, I've been upset ever since I found out about the 8 bit bus. They
advertise the 1000 as a 286 machine, and never tell you (at least me) about the
bus, and when I bought the machine my knowledge was even more limited than now.

Well, that's enough sour grapes. I'm still stuck with 128K of memory that
I can't use. For now I'm just keeping the pin jumper on, but I'm tired of
having to use a DOS disk to boot Word Perfect 5.0 and I don't want to give up
PCTools. Any other suggestions?

     hard drive/partition
     From: GLENTZ To: ALL

Help!!! I have a 1000SX with 65meg HD that I set up using RS Dos 3.20.22 I did
low level directly from debug to set all the parameters correctly. then I
partioned using fdisk which could only do the primary dos partition, Then I used
MLpart to create a "DOS2" partition which I guess is equivalent to an extended
partition for IBM DOS. Then I have to use MLPART.sys to assign "DOS2" partition
a logical drive letter. All this was ok for a long time but now I have a
program that won't recognize this "DOS2" partition.

What I found out is if I delete that partition and then use IBM DOS 3.30 fdisk
to make it an "extended DOS" partition everything is fine.

My Questions are

1. Is there a fdisk type shareware program compatible with 1000sx running
Radio shack dos 3.20.22 that is more IBM-Compatible than MLPART that RS
    supplies.?

2. If no to #1 then is there a newer dos I can switch to that will make the
partition work properly as well as provide the enhancements that RS added
such as MODE SLOW/FAST etc? RS, last I heard was only supporting DOS 3.20
for the 1000sx and nothing newer.

Please help. Maybe one of the third party HD companies would have more compat
ible partitioning software. Any ideas.

Hello, Sorry about the delay but I don't get on as often as I used to. Can't
help you out much with a color scanner for the 1000. The only ones that I know
are full size (no reliable color hand scanners that I have tried . The new
NiScan is supposed to be fairly good but I have never used it). I know of no
full size scanners that work acceptably in a 1000, usually because of processor
speed and lack of memory. It takes a LOT of memory to scan a color image. A lot
of the color GIF scans I have seen were done on Amiga or AT class machines and
then converted to GIF. Hewlette Packard makes a good (but pricey) color scanner
but I believe it requires a full size slot and 2MB memory. (Not positive about
that - going from memory). If you are really interested I'll check around with
some DTP people I know. Randy T.

Hi Mike - just a comment about the LIM 4.0. I believe LIM 4.0 is a combo
hardware and software specification. The motherboard itself must be designed to
support 4.0 as well as having special drivers. How well a program can use a
software only 4.0 is mora function of the software program than the driver and
board combination. If the application tries to use all the registrs and
features of the LIM 4.0 spec it will not function properly with a software only
emulation. The 1000 series are capable of 4.0 emulation only irrespective of
the board. The Invisiboard driver may provide a better emulation of 4.0 than
MicroMainframe - but I would still expect to find some programs that are 'too
picky' to accept software emulation only. Unfortunately, I have heard that a lot
of the Quarterdeck programs are just that picky. I think this is another
unfortunate side effect of the new 1000t? series being promoted as a 286
computer and most people think that 286=AT class. We GRANDERS know that this is
not always the case. Hope I didn't rain on your parade. Randy T.

     TL/2 "locking up"
     From: WTHEILACKER To: MISAL

I do not know if you recall my message #18381 regarding DOS 4.x, but I am still
having problems with my TL/2. I took your advice and installed the keyboard
driber with no apparent results. I am no longer sure if it is a problem with
DOS 4.x. Let me explain my situation.

I recently ran out of space on my internal 20 meg HD and replaced it with a 65
meg HD (a Toshiba MK-134 to be exact). In addition I decided that I would like
to use all 65 megs as one drive. After setting up the HD I installed DOS 4.x
and restored my files to the new drive. After finding some spare time to
explore how my TL/2 was operating with its new HD I discovered the following:
1- The TL/2 no longer recognizes the ROM drive (D:).

2- The Tandy mouse is now inoperable. In fact the serial port for the mouse
does not exist when I ran the system information utility from Peter Norton.

3- The computer "freezes" if nothing is entered on the keyboard within 1 to
2 minutes. I have also noticed the computer "freeze" while scrolling through
messages on BBSes. When such a freeze occurs the computer can be rebooted by
using CTRL-ALT-DEL. Although on occasion the keyboard is totally locked out and
it can only be rebooted by the main power switch.

I realized that the problem did not lie with DOS 4.x when I set up the
system with DOS 3.3 and the same problem occured. Hopefully you or someone else
can help me out with this problem. Thanks for your help.

    Bill

You're not going to be able to move TSR's into high memory without a hardware

in functionality only it works great on 8088, slow AT's etc. It's called
GEOWORKS ENSEMBLE and uses PCGEOS which is an adaptation of the MOTIF interface.

Question. What is Randy-dos?

Question. How did you configure your hard drive at the low-level format. Did
you tell the controller to low-level format as one disk, or did you tell it to
split the disk.

In reference to Randy dos is it 3.2, 3.3 or what?

Jax,
Thought I would butt in here and make a comment on color scanning. I have
been fooling around with it a bit and have spent quite a bit of time on the
"other" service hanging around their graphics forum. First of all, if you get
into COLOR scanning you need lots of memory and lots of hard disk space. A
single VGA 640 x 480 x 24 byte color scan can take 1 to 2 Megs of memory
depending on the size. This will copress down into about 90K to 120K 640 x 480
x 256 color GIF file. A few of these can fill up a hard disk fast! Most of the
GURUs over there have 100MB harddisks + and are moaning for more disk space!!
The best current buy is full size color scanners is the Epson EC-300. Cost is
about $1300 plus $400 for the interface board that goes in your computer. The
most basic color scanner is a JX-100, which can be hooked up to a serial port.
Most of the Gurus say this is a good deal, with the only disadvantage being the
4" X 6" scanning area. Have to do some cut & pasting for a full page picture.
They laugh at other "color" scanners that you may see advertised. The cost of
the JX-100 is about $600 that includes some good software - usually COLORIX, I
think. Every body has at least VGA, and many have the latest in SVGA. The
whole mess reminds me of when I got into HI-FI during my early youth when I was
"filthy poor". <Grin> There is a constant pressure to "upgrade" to the latest &
greatest hardware & software. Now that I am aproaching retirement and have
talked my wife into going back to work so I can live in the style that I would
like to become acustomed to... I may get into it a bit deeper. The color scans
ARE very nice and there is something gratifying about looking at a good color
pix that you just created.

DRIVEPARM was disconnected with PC DOS V3.x and MS-DOS V3.3. It was reactivated
in some later versions, or so I'm told. Anyway, I had some recognition
probllems when I added a 3.5 to my SX also. I discovered DRIVEPARM can be used
with PC DOS V3.x and MS -DOS V3.3 by using the command DRIVEPARM^A^A^A/D:ddd.
What this does is trick the CONFIG.SYS parser by using a triple Ctrl-A sequence
rather than an equal sign. The triple Ctrl-A gets thrown away and DOS uses
DRIVEPARM. So, to set drive B: as a 720K dri ve, include the line DRIVEPARM
^A^A^A /D:1 /C in your CONFIG.SYS. The ^A is a Ctrl-A and not a caret followed
by an A. You will get a smiling face character for each ^A. Do not use the
equal sign as the ^A^A^A sequence substitutes for the = sign. Works
fine on my SX. Have had no recognition problems since. Be mindful of the
spaces - there should be one between the M in DRIVEPARM and the first ^A; one
before the first / and one before the second /.

QRAM will work with the Micro Mainframe IF you are willing to give up using your
expanded memory for anything else. In order for QRAM to work the entire page
frame must be used. This means only a small amount of your expanded memory will
be used and you will not be able to use your additional memory for such mundane
things as RAM Drives. Personally, I went with the RAM Drives. Also, the Micro
Mainframe is hardware LIM3.2, not 4.0. The company does have a software LIM4.0
driver available but it does not
 help with QRAM.

Has anyone experienced a video prob with Telemate that I seem to have?

When there is any screen activity, the top 2 inches of the display will flicker.
This happen when making a mouse selection or any type of write to the screen
(Real annoying when Text is scrolling).. This appears to occur whether I,m in
terminal mode or viewing anyother window..

I,m running a TL/2 with a CM-11 monitor. I've gone thruouh the install prg
several times to make sure all is set up properly (video=color,, height=25)..
tried changing colors..tried starting over from scratch but same results..

Have no problem with any other program such a wordstar or Telix which I'm
currently using but would like the additional features Telemate offers.

A friend of mine has the 1400. He has a communications program called "veralix".
this program is for calling a database for attorneys. I could not get it to
respond to the modem, or the modem to respon to it. The modem is a Tandy modem,
made specificly for the 1400LT, already set for com2. We called Veralix, and
they had us run dos's Dbug to check the modem configuration. Dbug reported a
conflict. I loaded in procomm, set for com2, and it worked just fine. We have
not yet called Tandy suport. I am glad to hear that this is realy a problem, and
that I am not "loosing it", at least not yet.

file, but really does a great job on my 286 here..lets you spped the sound up,
slow it down, increase/decrease the filtering, allows multiple plays from one
command etc.. I can upload it if you want it.. It's called VocSound.zip and
comes with a skimpy doc file..I have been downloading alot of sounds to play
with it. will run from a batch file at bootup to greet you with your favorite
sound file. This file and many more available on my BBS.

Without being there to test, Tom -- it is difficult to try and isolate your
problem. It "could" be that one of your memory chips is causing the problem (
base memory).

By any chance are you using a Hard drive utility like Disk Manager, by ON Track?
This is a memory resident program that was installed when the hard drive was
formatted. Older version so this Disk Manager caused many problems.

The fact that you have to use a DOS disk to get WP 5.0 running troubles me. It
sounds like there is a TSR being loaded when your hard drive boots.

Breifly Norton dsk cache tries to think ahead on what the CPU will ask for next
and already have it in memory instead of having to access the disk drive when it
is asked for.It also stores reads and writes for one time useage. It will to some
extent give y ou courser control while it is still reading or writing
also.curser not courser! You can use it for one or more disk drives. For
example, you havea 720k disk cache, you can have all of floppy drive A: in
expanded memory;instant access! But it is better to let t he cache spread itself
over all drives for about a 70% hit ratio.Ther is more but you need to read it
in the Norton manual. This is for you too Skyline. Now the bad part is it takes up
about 15k of valuable DOS memory. Now I hope you see why I'm trying so des partly
to find a way to gain back some of my lost RAM.It might be about 10k though I'm
not sure without looking it up.If you find a way for me to gain some lost RAM

Hi Mike-
I don't think the chips are the problem, they were replaced once, but a TSR
is a possibility. I called Electronic Arts, they publish 688 Attack Sub and
Abrams Battle Tank, and explained the problem. They suggested booting from a
DOS disk to avoid any TSR problem, but when I tried, it still did not work. As
for the Word Perfect, that runs fine with the extra 128K, I only have to boot it
from a DOS disk when I have the 128K disabled and I am running PCTools, which
takes up quite a lot of RAM if you run it with a 64K Cache and keep it resident.
But it is a great program which is most useful when kept resident. Anyway, like
I said, even when I boot a DOS disk there is a problem with these games if I try
to use the memory upgrade. But I will search my files for anything I don't
recognize, and check the manual for the hard drive as well. Thanks

                      Still trying,

     ROM vs Hard Drive boot
     From: KCS_MILW To: MISAL

Mike, I have a 1000TL with Tandy 20 Meg hardcard, which I have had for about two
years. Have it setup to use ROM boot and load AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS file
from drive a: This seems to me to be the most foolproof way to start-up a
system. I have read that if the hard drive won't boot, starting with a system
disk in drive a: will work. I assume that SETUP has to specify disk boot for
this to work. My friend has a non Tandy PC clone. If he starts with a non system
disk in drive a: he will get a message , "please insert system disk." If I try
this no such message is displayed, which I suspect is because I use ROM boot.
The point of all this is that when I told him I don't trust hard drive boots, he
told me of a utility he has that allows a person to rei nstall the hidden system
files from dive a: if the hard dive fails. Is this utility available from the
Delphi database? If it is it would seem like a good thing to have for people
that boot from the hard drive. He got this program when he bought his syst em
used so he doesn't know if it is commercial or sharpener.

In fact, I like that feature of a 1000. I feel confident that if they did

complain of the waste by duplication.

I do think it is a bit petty to not include the EGA and VGA drivers, assuming,

There must be some reason they select that one particular file and hide

The QRAM command you refer to does not work on my machine. However, there is a
program put out by Above Software, 714-851-2283, called Above Disc+ which
includes a program called Above640. If you have VGA this program will increase
your memory from 640K to 736K on EGA and VGA 256K boards. You will only be able
to use this in text mode but when you switch to a graphics program it senses it
and returns you to graphics mode. The QRAM program causes my machine to lock
up. Above640 works beautifully on my 3 000NL. Never tried it on my SX as I do
not have an EGA or VGA board. On the SX the EGA/VGA boards let the machine
reclaim that 16K of video memory the 16 color tandy CGA uses so Above640 should
work. It is not a very spendy package and does much the sam e thing as QRAM.
Hope this info helps. Your only other choice would to be to download MARK and
RELEASE so you could remove your TSR's from memory when you need to.

That makes sense. I guess the upgrade route is the only route. Thanks for the
info.

HAVE USED SPINRITE WITH A 32 MEG ZUCKERBOARD ON A TANDY SX. IT DID NOT ALLOW A
LOW LEVEL FORMAT FORMAT BECAUSE THE ZUCKERBOARD USESERLL INSTEAD OF RLL. I HAVE
TO CHECK TO SEE IF IT USES THE WESTERN DIGITAL CONTROLLER CHIP. IF IT DOES I MAY
HAVE TO CHANGE A
JUMPER. I WOULD LIKE TO DO A LOW LEVEL FORMAT TO CHANGE MY INTERLEAVING BUT AM
UNABLE. IF YOU FIND OUT ANYTHING I WOULD APPRECIATE THE INFO.

There are programs that will let you copy stuff with the hidden/system
attributes set. I think xtree will, for instance.

The SetupXX# will allow you to make changes in the machines set up, ie boot from
disk. There is a switch that will allow you to look at the bianary program that
is on the ROM. You may be able to change this, I haven't had the guts to, since
I know almost nothing about the machine level. The switch is /b

Of course there's more and of course they're all not documented by Tandy in any
of their manuals. There's also SETUPTL/f which resets the EEPROM to all it's
original factory settings. This is good to know when you've set up the wrong
kind of video settings and lost you screen disply.

I was given a game sold by Radio Shack called "The Ancient Art of War at Sea".
It had 2 disks, 1 marked Tandy and the other for IBM and compatibles. They are
not before me at the moment, so I do not remember if it said "1000" (I don't
think so). My guess is that the Tandy version of the program makes use o f the
16 color graphics. David
