I don't know what is causing your problem. However, I have Lemmings and I
am running DOS 5.0 on a Packard Bell 386SX/16 with an STB video card and 1 MEG
of
video memory. The program works; however, I get a lot of screen flicker and
unpredictable mouse movement. I would say the problem is either the video card
ormaybe it is DOS 5.0. I may try running under DOS 4.0 and see if it still
occurs. If it does, I'
ll post another message.

P.S. I can't run it on my SL2 or I could test it under DOS 3.3.

SETUPTL, not some other setup for another Tandy, a quick call to RS confermed
that they have had simmilar problems once
with no adverse affects, so I went ahead and changed my boot up from ROM to

The first time it didn't work right, so I went into SETUPTL (With message) and

Hi Bill.

Most comm packages have an option to turn off sound. I saw a program once
that silenced the speaker, but I can't remember what it was called ( I know,
that isn't very helpful).

BTW, doesn't the 1000RL have a volume control? (or is that just for the
headphones?)

You could splice in a "switch" to *one* of your speaker wires, Bill. This
would allow you to turn the speaker on and off. You could route the wires
and switch to the back of the computer where it could be afixed.

..or, you could disconnect one of the speaker wires permanently (permanent
unless you open the computer and reconnect it).

Does anyone know if the motherboard on my 1000 TL can be upgraded, I'm not

just so I can get a 16-bit bus.
To me I think it's kind of stupid, I have a 286 computer with only 8-bit slots,
which as many of you know
makes upgrades hard and expensive. I'm not concerned with keeping all of the
integrated features Tandy has on their motherboards,
like drive controllers, video and sound since these are the things I'm most
interested in upgrading. Thanks in advance.

First, the 8513 monitor was recalled by IBM because it was defective. If
you are planning on purchasing one -- becareful.

I know that any SVGA card that is comptible with the Western Digital
(Paradise) card, will work in you system. I am not familiar with Zymos.
Maybe someone else can help us here.

The VGA card is really the only compatibility issue. If it works in your
Tandy, it will drive any multisync monitor.

Your computer has a 286 processor but, only 8 'bus lines' -- you cannot
force the machine to 16 bus lines by an upgrade. To be honest, I could
*never* understand Tandy's logic with this system.

Your cheapest option -- replace the motherboard with a "real" 16 bit

The new "baby At" motherboards will fit, John. The "rear-ports" for the

must align with the rear of the case. Even a 1/8 inch offset will give one
fits when trying to plug in a cable connector!

The RL BOIS will also be useless to you and likely interfer with these new

It sounds like the you may have some type of "interrupt conflict" within

If you have to reboot your system to get keyboard control, it is definitely

     RE: mouse (Re: Msg 19771)
     From: SANDLINJ To: PATLOF

I believe your problem may be due to the fact that Deskmate has
its own Mouse driver built in.

You will need to install a mouse driver in your CONFIG.SYS by
adding a line like this:

DEVICE=C:\DOS\MOUSE.SYS

That assumes that the mouse driver is in the DOS directory on the
C: drive. If you don't have the MOUSE.SYS, then most programs
won't recognize the mouse. Even if you do have the MOUSE.SYS
loaded, there are many programs that just do not recognize a
mouse!

NOTE: An alternate to the MOUSE.SYS is MOUSE.COM which is loaded
from the AUTOEXEC.BAT file (instead of CONFIG.SYS). You would
add the line:

C:\DOS\MOUSE

to the AUTOEXEC.BAT.

I hope this is understandable, and helpful.

I had a similar problem problem on my T-1000 SX. It was a 5 1/4
inch drive. On the 3.5 inch drives, it may be the little silver
door (of the diskette) getting hung up on the mechanism of the
drive. In that case, I can only suggest a new diskette. If that
isn't the problem, you may need the drive worked on.

I got rid of the problem on the 5 1/4 inch drive by selling it
and installing a 3.5 inch in its place (so I could use the 720K
floppies that were becomming popular).

would be YModem <batch version>. XModem is old, and it is slow,
although Kermit is the slowest.

I don't quite understand what you are saying. I am using Microsoft Windows
now to get me on Delphi, Genie and several BBS's but as for downloading
that is a different story.

I am not sure if this 2500 sx.20 Tandy is a 386 or 8086, do not know whether
to use binary or ASCII. Binary seems to work but it will download, or at least
I get an indication that something is being downloaded, but when I go to

     PC Fax/Modem Problems.
     From: JAMESCARRIER To: ALL

I've recently installed a ZOOM/Telephonics Fax/Modem in my Tandy 1000SL.
I'm using Procomm 2.4 and BitFax/SR software. Naturally, I'm really new at
this sort of thing, but I have two specific problems that I wonder if any
body can help me solve. 1) I can't seem to log-on Delphi at anything but
300 baud (My modem is a 2400 baud modem). I am successful at using 2400 baud
nd several BBS, but not on Delphi. What's happening?
2) When I send a Fax, my BitFax allows me to preview my Fax. However, when
I use this preview feature the tops of some lines are cut off, and the bottoms
of other lines are cut off. The Fax is probably transmitted though. I'mm
wondering if this is something peculiar to Tandy 16 color moniter software. Any
ideas? Any hints? Any encouragement?

Go to your TERMINAL screen and select SETTINGS, then BINARY TRANSFERS. Set
the Dialog Box to XModem/CRC. Under COMMUNICATIONS PARAMETERS, set Flow
Control to Xon/Xoff, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, Partity to None.

If you are using Tymnet, after CONNECT, enter an "O" (letter O, not zero)
instead of "A."

When you start a download *from Delphi* use "XM" -- that should do it!

When you see the RECEIVE BINARY FILE dialog box, notice the "Directory." This
is where you download is going to be placed. So, this is where you go to
get it.

Gary,

Here is what I found:

To reach the PC-Sig from the Tandy MAIN prompt (one EX from the
forum) type: PC C
<to access the PC Compatibles>

Now enter: DA TAN
<for Tandy specific Database>

Now enter: SEA 2000
<to search for T2000 programs>

Now enter: NAR COMM
<to narrow search to comm programs>

<These are the files you will access>
GTKERM (2000 FOSSIL DRIVER) PROG NOV-88 MERRYWEATHER
T2000 FOSSIL DRIVER (REV) PROG APR-88 DOSWIZZ
GTPOWERCOMM (T2000) PROG JAN-88 JPROCTOR

Type: READ

The first file you can skip, just enter: NEXT

The next two files are the ones you want. T2FOSSIL.ARC
and GTOF1300.ARC. To download enter: DOW and start your download
protocol.

If you haven't previously specified a download protocol you
should make sure you are using one available on both Delphi, and
your comm program (This assumes you are using a comm program that
has Binary Download protocols.)

Once the first file is done just press enter, then DOW again to
download the next file.

Name: T2000 FOSSIL DRIVER (REV)
This file should be called "T2FOSSIL.ARC"

Name: GTPOWERCOMM (T2000)
This file should be called "GTOF1300.ARC"

Hope this helps (I listed each step since I don't know how
familiar you are with Delphi. If you are not a beginner, don't
feel insulted if I underestimated your ability!)

sometimes will work...the other day, *every* disk I put in, I had to

mean my alignment is off? If not, what can it be? If it is, what do I

whenever I tried to print anything in GeoWorks. I think that the Tandy version
of MSDOS 3.3 that came with the machine could talk to the printer better.

My 20M drive is now a 39M drive thanks to SSTOR compression which came with the
DR which while it has cost me some memory (down to 512K) cost less than Stacker.

Cost less money that is.Hope this helps someone!...tom

What SIMMs are in a 2500SX?
     From: JIMREED To: MISAL

  Mike,

  I have one of the new Tandy 2500SX-20s . . .

. . . that are the Christmas special this year, and I
  do
love it. The price is right, too.

However, I did not think the price was particularly attractive for the 2Meg
memory upgrade kit for $270. I see 1Meg SIMMs going for around $50, but I
  cannot tell from the manual
  if I need 1Megx8 80ns SIMMs or 1Megx9 80ns SIMMS. The "x8" and "x9" throws
me. The permanent memory on the motherboard is in the form of four 256K
SIMMs, so I cannot look at it to see whether there are nine chips or eight.
Do you know which is correct for the Tandy 2500SX-20?

                                     Thanks,

Tandy has used the "8 chip bank" for some time, Jim. Most other
manufacturer's use the "9 chip bank" for memory parity. To be honest, I am
not sure which the 2500 SX uses but, I know where you can find out.

Call MARYMAC at 800-231-3680 (Mon-Fri 8-6 CST). They are an experienced
Tandy outlet and offer both 2500 SX machine and memory upgrades. Their
prices are much less than those of Tandy Computer Centers.

ACK! Just read your message again. The 256K SIMMS will tell you if the memory
needed is 1 x 8 or 1 x 9. On *one* of the SIMM modules, count the number of
chips. The answer will be either 8 or 9. *If* the SIMMS should be 256K x 4
chips (2 256k x 4 chips on a module), look for *one more* 256K x 1 chip on
the SIMM module. If it is there, the *are* using parity, which indicates a
1 x 9 configuration -- if not, 1 x 8.

Are you confused yet <grin>?

From the PC-SIG Main Menu (not the Tandy SIG), type DA {press enter}. Then
choose the TELECOM Topic from the menu listing. For this you would
type TEL {press enter}. Next type READ TELIX {press enter}. At the
"...Action>"
prompt type XD and get Deskmate ready to download using Xmodem.

TELIX is much, much better than the Deskmate telecom program -- I am sure
you will like it.

1024x768.The TX will used for games and limited home use. Will a 8 bit 800
x600 256k video card be sufficient for their use? Do I need to buy a 16 bit
card that supports the 1024x768 to operate this monitor? If an 8 bit card
will work what is a good inexpensive brand that is compatible with the TX?
Also have a TL/2 with 640k memory.I was given some mem.chips to upgrade to
768k.After installing them I have no indication that they are there or
working. Is there something I need to change in the tl/2 to make use of the e

First the bad news, the TX can't handle 16 bit cards (normally).
Now the good news - 8 Bit VGA should be good enough. (Some 16 bit
VGA cards can be used in 8 bit slots by detecting what they're
installed in and compensating).

All the slots for expansion in the 1000tx are 8 bit slots,
despite the fact that it uses an 80286 CPU. :(

The extra memory in the TL/2 works with the onboard video to give
you more graphics space (for 640x200x16 I would guess). Other
than for video, I don't think you can use the extra RAM for much.

From time to time I've seen messages posted here about some poor soul who

128K in question is that used by the onboard Tandy video. So if you have
upgraded to VGA as I have then suddenly you have 128K that is totally
useless. What can you do?

Surely there must be some way to fool the cpu into putting that 128K to some
use once you've upgraded. Are there any software geniuses out there (at Tandy
perhaps?) who are working on this? It just seems a shame to shell out the
bucks for the extra memory and not be able to use it once you upgrade the video.

Any ideas out there? Is Tandy listening?

But, as I said, I don't know anyway to use the memory! :( !

I have 128K worth of chips in my desk drawer, since when I
upgraded to 1 Meg on my 3000NL, I had to remove the 128K since
the BIOS doesn't recognize 1.128 Meg! And I'll never reinstall

Hi I am familier with a couple of telecomm programs, might be able to help
you if you mention which one you are using. I am using Telix, but in a college
telecommunications class, they taught us on Procomm.

First thing you probably should do is set up your user default protecol choice
on the USING DELPHI menu. If your software supports Zmodem then set it up for
that. Also, depending upon your telecom software, you probably have a set up
option on it to tell it where you want your downloaded files to go (path and
filename). Some people like to download to floppies out of fear for virus's.
I have only normal density 5 1/4 in disks along with my hard drive. I download
right to my hard drive since many programs you may want to download might be
larger than your floppy disk capacity.

An advantage to using Zmodem is that it can be configered to start up "auto-
matically" right after you select the downloading option once you within an
area where there is software. Another advantage to Zmodem is for some readon
reason you opt to abort the download, you can later restart the download right
where you left off...really nice if it is long download.

While I can't state for sure, the communications network that serves DELPHI
which is INCLUDED as part of your hourly charge from DELPHI...it seems to
always be a little noisy. My telix program usually tries to estimate the
downloading time, and it almost always guesses short of what it usually takes.
this is because during the downloading process it has to retransmit "blocks"
in it's error checking process.

I say a message on the initial sign in menu the last day or so that said
in the "using Delphi" in the "what's New" sub menu, there is a downloading
tutor you can select about of maybe 10 help choices.

Hope this is of some help.

     From: DLINDERMAN To: GOGEBIC

Tandy 1000SX and went thru this process about a year ago. I highly
recommend you locate the Sept '90 issue of PCM. It had a very meatie article
on upgrading to VGA in that issue. I see that PCM has some extra cost services
on DELPHI (I am new to DELPHI) --you might look there to see if per chance they
offer some of their articles online maybe.

Anyway, stay out of your local Radio Shack store if you don't want to pay more
than you need to. Like they say, Tandy is dandy until you want more. I ended
up buying from DCS, somewhere in Ohio I think--they have an extensive mail order

service. Besides the issue of selecting a graphics card, there is a lot of
monitors out there to wade thru. I ended up with a SVGA Paradise board and a
multisync CTX monitor. ]

there are two important things besides chosing the graphics card and monitor
(which many times are packaged together): one is you should probably put a
simple/short VGA BIOS bug fix unique to Tandy. This same issue of PCM has the
program listed line by line. Use your favorite word processor to type it in
and just save it in ascii format. It is a basic program that after you run it
once it creates a com file that you should put it your autoexec bat file so
that every time you boot up, it resides in memory. If you dont do this, you will

have some problems running VGA programs. What happens is some programs "think"
you still have Tandy 1000 16 color graphics so they won't run or recognize your
VGA card. Some programs can be "forced" to go into VGA by typing VGA after
the exe filename, but many will not. So, find that issue and read the article
on upgrading and the VGA BIOS fix program.

Finally, there is a tiny video interupt switch on the motherboard you have to
switch that will tell the computer to recognize the new vga board and not
the internal Tandy graphics.

so hope this helps get you started. You will love VGA.

Anyway I have gotten a Tandy 2500SX, 386 Computer now. I now can access the
uper memory with no problems.
Thanks again for the reply. This is a GOOD forum.

     Dumping TSR's
     From: MRATHGEBER To: ALL

I have a 1000 TL. Usually, I have the EEPROM set to read autoexec.bat and
config.sys whenever the machine boots. Some games (e.g. Red Storm Rising) run
much better whenever these files aren't read. About the only thing I have on
autoexec.bat is the mous
e.com and whatever ProComm 2.0 wanted, and the config.sys is mainly for the
ProComm 2.0 also. Can the TSR's be dumped somehow without resetting the EEPROM
and rebooting. Also, I tried to compose this message offline and upload using
the "PageUp" button,
but nothing happened. Any suggestions regarding either of these irritations
(grrrrr) will be GREATLY appreciated. -- Mark

If your modems can function with out dial tone you might be able
to connect them! (I've done it before, it has to do with telling
one to originate (ATD) (has to be able to ignore that fact that you
don't have dial tone) and have the other answer (ATA). Of course
you should make sure both are set to 300 baud. BTW: The ATD and
ATD are for Hayes compatable modems, I don't know if the modem on
the Model 4P would be that way (may be you just throw a DATA/TALK
switch).

If you have spare serial ports on each machine you could go the
route of a null modem. Essential all that does is connect pin 2
(transmit) to pin 3 (recieve) of the other machine and
visa-versa, pin 4(machine one) to pin 5 (machine two) and ties 6
- 8 and 20 (machine one) to 6 - 8 and 20 (machine two). And that
should work also (also you would have a better that 300 baud
connection).

Ok Mark, let me try to give you some help.

You could set up a second batch file to load your TSRs for you,
and rename the file to LOADTSRS.TMP when you want to load the
games. (You could even make a batch file to rename the second
file.) Here is an example of what I mean:

[AUTOEXEC.BAT]
PATH=<what ever you have now for a path>
SET PCPLUS=<whatever you have that set to>
. . . <any other comands that don't affect the games>
IF EXISTS LOADTSRS.BAT LOADTSRS

[CONFIG.SYS]
FILES=25
DEVICE=C:\MOUSE.SYS <or whatever you set it to>

[LOADTSRS.BAT]
<put the commands from your autoexec in here that
you use to load the TSRs you use>

[TSRBOOT.BAT]
REN C:\LOADTSRS.TMP LOADTSRS.BAT

[NOTSRS.BAT]
REN C:\LOADTSRS.BAT LOADTSRS.TMP

Of course these can be modified in whatever way it takes to make your system run

they way you want it to. I assumed for this demo that you load the Mouse driver

from the CONFIG.SYS. If you load it from the AUTOEXEC.BAT then of course make
the appropriate change.

You cannot in any possible way transfer programs between those two computers
You can transfer data files through their serial ports using a null modem, or
you could uupload them to a BBS which has a private file system such as mine
and then
download with the other computer. I have a node set up for small computers
and it also has lots of TRS-80 and other orphan files. Call 414-277-0131.

The file you downloaded was part of a Group, Bill. This means that more than
one file exists. The one you downloaded is only a description of the new
features in this version. To get the others, you must READ the Telix
description again and then type "XD 2" to get the "second" file in the Group
and if need be, "XD 3" for the third.

The files that you download are "compressed." This saves you money as it
takes less time to complete the tranfer. After you get the file on your
computer, it must be "DE-compressed" (or unpacked). The normal compressed
file will have a ZIP extension. This indicates that it was compressed using
PkWare's archive utility. Under the Utility Topic, download PKZIP-PKUNZIP.
This comes with instructions on how to "unzip" the files.

Afraid that you cannot run the program(s) without disabling the ROM, Mark.
You are aware of SETUPTL /A?

If you are not, try setting your editor (here on Delphi) to "Oldie". This is
a very easy editor to use. It will also allow you to upload directly to
Forum. From the Main PC-SIG Menu, type: SET EDIT and then if your "current"
editor is set to EDT, answer <Y>es to change it (to Oldie).

Once this is done, prepare your Forum messages using any ASCII editor (on
your computer system). Enter Forum and use ADD/EDIT (to add a message) or
REP/EDIT (to reply to an existing message). You will then enter the Editor
directly, while still in Forum. Now, at the first line of the Editor, type
start your upload in ASCII format from your communications program.

When the upload has finished, type /EXIT and your message be saved.

You might want to look at MLITE (PC-SIG Telecom Topic). This automatically
takes care of most Delphi functions -- I use it for Forum, Mail, File
Transfers and almost all my Delphi activities.

You need to start DRIVER.SYS from your CONFIG.SYS file. If you have a hard
drive then the 360K (external) drive will be the "E: drive (or drive # 3, 0
is A: drive)". You would then use this line:

DEVICE=DRIVER.SYS /d:3 /f:0

Where, d:3 is drive number 3 and f:0 is the switch to tell the BIOS that the
drive is a 360K.

There should be some appropriate games in the PC-SIG Home & Games
database (GO COM PC DA HO). You could search, but at the moment
I'm not sure what you'd search for. Also in the PC-SIG is an
EDUCATION Database (GO COM PC DA ED) that is likely to have the
files you are looking for.
From the Tandy Forum:
>EX
>PC C
>DA ED

To browse through the descriptions, enter: READ. To get a
listing of the filenames, enter: DIR. If you find a name you
like you can enter: READ <filename you like> and you will get
the description of that file.

I don't know what Telecom program you are using, but I'm sure you
have at least Xmodem (slow, slow, slow!). You could enter XD at
the end of the file description to begin a download (and tell
your telecom to begin downloading.

If the file description ends with a list of several filenames,
you would issue the XD command with a number (of the file to
download): for example, XD 1 would download the first of the
listed filenames.

I haven't looked at any of the games, so I don't have any
specific suggestions. Good luck! and Welcom to Delphi!

If your terminal program has "File logging" or "Buffer capture" use this to

If you are talking about the software device driver, it goes into your

     Modem
     From: CDRDS To: MISAL

I have an interesting problem. My modem would not respond to Procomm, and
modem doctor reported a non compatable modem. I have been using this modem for
a while, and have run modem doctor before. I am learning more about computers
on a daily basis, enough to be dangerous. I was playing with D-Bug before my
problems started. The machine had been turned off, and I thought that this
would clear all parameters that can be software set. I also thought that only
swithches on the modem afected anything that can have a permanent setting.

Anyway, after many tries with procomm, modem doctor, and cold boots, and
d-bug again, I decided to retrace my steps. I then went into procomm, and
tried to get a response, any response. I heard the speaker chirp with one
setup that I used, but it still would not pick up the phone line. Then I
sent modem setup strings, starting with self test, then I started building
toward what I had used on line before. The modem came to life, and modem
doctor reported an "all's well".

My question, did I screw things up in D-bug, or do I have a flakey modem,
with an intermittent problem. It is still under warenty, so I want to send
it back soon, If I have a problem.
