     Tandy 1000HX
     From: BILLER To: ALL

Just bought a 1000HX in clearance at Radio Shack. No manual of course!
Anyway, I was told I could use my Gold Star model 1210a A monochrome monitor
with it. 1000HX has a 9-pin plug in. My monitor has 9-pin also with row of 5
being used & 1 of row of 4
being used. When I connect monitor, the picture enlarges, shrinks, and at
times blinks off and on. Is there a problem of compatability or is there
something I have to do in configuration. With no manual I am helpless. Thanks
in advance

Configuration (software) will not help. It sounds as though your monitor
cable may have a bad connection or the monitor itself is faulty.

bought a cpy of Commo. It works beautifully, but has no protocols except Ascii

no the program is not graphics intensive. does not use Tandy graphics either.

The program is just QBasic or the dos Edit program.

DOS 5.0 does not recognize the rom chips period. Even if you bought the
upgrade from RS, they didn't modify it to recognize the ROM chips in the newer
1000's. RS put out news bulletins about this situation. Your solutions are
1. Switch back to Tandy MS-DOS
2. Buy an off the shelf version of deskmate and forget about your ROM chips.
3. Forget about your ROM and Deskmate.

The problem, Glen, is that I can't talk to the media on the drive. I can
perform successful `seek' tests, and talk to the controller, but when I try to
do read/write routines, each and every cylinder/head pair is fubar. I tried
doing a low-level through
`debug' with the params suggested by another SIG member (g=c800:5) or was it
(g=c800:s?), but no go. Didn't even bring up the menu, just sat and stared at
me til I warm-booted. Believed the problem was my antique BIOS (01.01.0), and
so did Tandy service
here in Tacoma, but since have upgraded to 1.3.2, and same-o same-o... I've
tried using SpeedStor's utilities to LLformat, with all failures, tried the
debug, as above, and fdisk gives me a drive failure. Tried two different
drives, the first being the Se
agate (I watched a local area sysop plug it into his machine and read
everything on it), and a known good antiwhmmm antique 20 meg circa 1983 with a
different (COMPEQ) fd/hd controller... ditto on everything. Seems to be
narrowing down to purchasing an A
MI 386sx someone's upgrading from, and a new power supply, and moving away from
Tandy entirely. Tried everything else (waah). Haven't given up hope, yet.
Someone told me that it MIGHT be the DOS version (3.3 and 4.01) I'm using. He's
sending me his DOS disks so I can give 3.1 a shot, but I don't have a real
warm, fuzzy that that's going to help. Any other suggestions? Thanks, Randy

If your modem is internal and at the default switch setting of COM1, it
will grab COM1 for itself.

Your mouse driver can be set for COM2 by using the switch (usually /2) after
loading it from your CONFIG.SYS file.

If GEOS "insists" that you use COM1 for the mouse, reconfigure your modem
switches or jumpers (in the modem board) for COM2.

that I need a mouse driver written by Microsoft. One of the Logitect mice that
I looked at - Logitech First Mouse- claims to be 100% Microsoft Compatible.
Megahaus which advertises in PCM has a Logitech 3 button serial and a GVC 3
button serial. Is there a 3rd party brand that is better than the other? Do
I have to watch for compatability problems with the Tandy? Is the Microsoft
compatability with Moneycounts a potential problem?

Also, and I know this is a really stupid question, what is the difference
between a 3 button and a 2 button, other than a 3 button has one more button?
In other words, what does the 3rd button do?

Thanks for any help. I realize we are probably the last people on the

is a mouse really worth the puchase, we have a CAD program that supports a

very limited use on Apple computers. I first learn, all self taught, to work
on an Apple IIe. They are very idiot proof, sorry I couldn't think of a
better term and I was a complete idiot when I first turned on an Apple. They
did give me the computer knowledge and urge to learn more to allow me to go
to an IBM (Tandy) compatible. But I have to admit, I spent more time the
first few months reading than actually doing because the IBM compatible didn't
do any thing for itself. But know I love the flexibility and the ability to
be able, sometimes with a little study, to know what's going on or change what
I want or need to change. But as you said, I think, I can see where Bill might

have some trouble if he is used to an Apple (mac) computer. I also agree that

Thanks for the support, Debbi!

Sometimes I catch myself sounding a bit snooty (uppity, snotty,
unpleasant, whatever!) and have to find a better way to say what I am
trying for. Sometimes I don't catch myself until I get the reply and
reread my original! (and don't that make me feel bad!)

I got my first start on an Apple II (back on the old cassette
version!) and kind of evolved my way to the MS-DOS family.
Fortunately for me, I am a techno-freak. If it requires technology,
then I want to know it!

Now a-days, though, I am beginning to believe there is no reason for
machines that are not intuitive. Plenty of power, plenty of practice
(for the programmers), and lots of ergonomics studies, they should be
able to build and easy to use but flexible computer.

Just my opinion, anyhow.

Hi, Debbi.

Mouse hunting, eh?

From what I understand, the Logitech Mouse is popular. What the third
button does depends on the software you are using (some programs don't
use the button, others depend on it). Mostly, the third button is
another way to accomplish something you'd normally *Have* to do from
the keyboard.

The Microsoft mouse is, by definition, Microsoft compatible, of
course, so you *Should* never have compatibility problems like you
could have even if the manufacturer says they are 100% compatible.
The big problem with the MS mouse is the cost. They like their
product so much, the put a premium price on it (I have one, I like it
better than any other I have ever tried, but it only has, and will
always have, just two buttons.)

Some of the third party mouse products are a pain to use. Even the
IBM and Tandy Mouse are a pain. The buttons require relatively high
effort to push the buttons, and they don't seem to move well on normal
surfaces (desktops, books, or notebooks). Even on the special mouse
pads, they leave a lot to be desired.

"Is a mouse worth buying?" - If you use a mouse a lot, then the
Microsoft mouse's high price (it usually come bundled with windows
though, so the price is ofset some) is worth the smooth action, and
fine, precision key clicks. The logitech mouse is among those I have
*NOT* tried, so I have no opinion, though the price is usually good.
The other cheap mouse products often leave too much to be desired to
even be worth the time, or the cost, to buy.

__________________________________ the bottom line _________________
Your only regrets with the Microsoft mouse will be cost (you may
decide this is not a regret worth regretting (does that make sense?))
and the lack of a third button (on some programs it really would be
handy to have three buttons, on others it is only O.K.)

Does this help?

Any one else have another opinion? Let's hear it?

If I could get 132 columns, I probably couldn't read it! It'd be too

I believe the other lines option is 28.

being hard to click. I have two boys, 6 and 8 that use the computer and so
it needs to be fairly easy to click.

Yes, I would like to hear other comments. Especially info on the Logitech.
Right now that seems to be the one we are leaning towards. But we aren't
making the purchase for at least a couple more weeks. It is a birthday

Hi, I've just joined the Tandy SIG. I purchased a Tandy 2500 XL with a CD-

this particular Tandy computer in PCM. Was the model I bought a lemon? So
far it has worked pretty well, except that I can't get the CD-ROM to work.
I add the software for the CD-ROM drive and add the necessary lines in AUTO-
EXEC BAT and CONFIG SYS, but the drive the CD-ROM is supposed to work on
(E) just doesn't appear. Also, I've asked the Radio Shack fellow here in
Davis about the possibility of getting a 386 CPU for my 2500 XL, and he
mutters something about it being very, very expensive, etc., etc. Do any
of you have recommendations of a place to contact where I can get a good
deal on a 386?

Buzzby,

The 2500 XL looks like a fine computer as far as I can tell. PCM
usually prints articles for the 1000 series, since it is the most
popular. I believe that PCM does do articles for the other models as
well. The 2500 will probably start seeing more press soon, as more
people by into it. Certainly, the 2500 is better than the 1000
series.

As for a 386 CPU, most of the ADD-ONs I've seen cost as much as a new
motherboard!

As for the CD-ROM, check all the letters from D to Z (I assume you
have a hard drive.) The SONY drive at work uses drive M (don't ask me
why).

Anybody knows how to get a new diskette or where to get help?

If the last line in the listing, "bytes high DOS memory can be created", is
not 0, then HRAM can create and/or manage high DOS memory on your PC.

The last line shows me the 282,624. But I can't seem to access that area.
When I try to run the EMS40 driver it gives me a "not enough memory" error
message.
The Himem.sys in DOS 5.0 says that I have to have a 80x86 CPU. I have tried
the EMM386 and it just locks the computer up.I am pprobably not using the right
info when I try to install the drive, but have tried all the different entries
that are in the doc's
 for EMS40.
I am wondering if Tandy didn't let the 8088 go to Himem,as another fellow and
I talked about this problem.
I figured that the EMS40 prog would work better on this HX,but haven't been
able to get it installed yet.
If the upper memory is accessable,I would like to use it.
Any other information is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You MAY be able to take your original disks to your local Radio Shack
and have them re-format the disks, and then copy all the original files
from disks they have in the store. I have done such a thing with my local
store with no problems. Take note, that it will be upto the whim of your

Changing bios should help. g=c880:5 is correct for debug if the controller
card is a Western Digital. I don't know for other cards. Which 1000 do you
have? You may need to get a new hard drive controller card bios that can
handle its own low level formating through the debug routine. If you have a
WD card the bios chip should say something about being a "super bios". Also
if your 1000 is an older model make sure the card can use interrupt 2 instead
of the normal interrupt 5. Mistake above in debug address should say
g=c800:5.  Good Luck.

If your trying to do what I think your trying you're out of luck. The 8088
is not capable of accessing himemory. Himem.sys will only work on 80286
chips and higher. EMM386 is only for 80386 chips and higher. I'm not familar
with memkit but nothing will give you high memory with an 8088 machine unless
you get expanded memory and do some fancy footwork with software like QRAM or
NETROOM etc. That can use expanded memory to store "SOME" things that would
normally be in the normal 640K of memory.

What MEMKIT is suppose to do is access the memory between 640k and 1024k.

This program says it will work on a 8086,8088 & 80286. It is calling this area
upper memory. It has a Chkmem prog to tell you if
there is any available memory in this area.

When I run the Chkmem prog it tells me that I have 282,624 bytes a
High DOS can be ceated in. It also says I need an EMM.SYS prog to get into
this upper memory which DOS 5.0 doesn't have.

I found this EMS40.sys prog in the Data files but have been unable to get it
to load from the config.sys. It gives me a "not enough memory" listing.
This program is to emulate the EMM.sys like the ones in Lotus,Intel,Microsoft
Expanded Memory specifaction ver 4.0.

Also when I run the Chkmem it shows that there are four addresses that are not
being used, and that corresponds to the addresses this program accesses.
The addresses that are being used in this upper memory are used for Video mem,
ROM,RAM & another ROM address.
There is a total of 276K that is not used in this area as of now, and that is
what I am trying to get to.
I hope that I have clerified these a little better.

I have tried the Himem & EMM386 sys from Dos but to no avail.

Thanks for the reply,am stilltrying to get the access.

First, you need a driver that will setup your HMA as Expanded Memory that is
LIM 4.0 compatible. DOS 5.0 will not help you at all when using and XT
because an XT does not have the A20 address line needed (it only uses A0-A19
to address memory).

Without the HAM previously set as Expanded Memory -- MemKit will not be able
to help you.

What we need to ask (hopefully some on here will know): Has ANYONE found a
LIM 4.0 compatible device driver that works with the HX????

If you have an 8-bit XT-type contoller with its own BIOS you have to tell
SETUP that harddrive C: is not installed and then do the low-level format
with debug g=c800:5 (if that doesn't work, try cc00:5).

If you have an AT-type controller, it won't have its own BIOS. You have to tell
SETUP that drive C: C: is installed and what its type is. Then you low-level
with
HSECT (parameters should be defined in your dos manual).

My recommendations are get a Paradise VGA (the 8-bit version, although the
16-bit will work). It is identical to what RS sells except for the price.
I happen to find a 16-bit adapter for $69, so I am not complaining.
A low-end VGA color monitor should do the trick.
Just plug the VGA card into a slot (the leftmost is the best and is the only
slot that will take the 16-bit VGA card. All video will now go to the VGA card.

As for your keyboard, there is an advertiser in PCM that advertises a directly
compatable keyboard for your TX. If you want more info about VGA, see the
article a few months back in PCM that tells yopu how to do it.

Howdy, CHERIE NELMS

Actually, the keyboard problem sounds like... the keyboard! On
my old Tandy 1000 SX, I could remove the keycaps and clean out
the keyboard (I have all the key positions memorized but you
should be careful to note where the keys came from if you try
it). It's very possible that some dirt, or packing material got
down under the keys, and is wreaking havoc.

The Monitor probably needs professional work. The term degauss
may not mean any thing to you, so I'll explain what probable
needs doing (and you'll see why a pro should do it). Most of
todays monitors have a grid just behind the phosphore coating on
the front glass. The grid is there to help the electrons hit the
right point on the glass to make the correct color glow. During
the move some magnetic source may have come close to the face of
the monitor and warped the grid. Re aligning the grid will
probably clear up the display, but it is not something you can do
yourself.

My recommendation, get the VGA but make sure you can return the
VGA board if it doesn't work in your 1000 (not all of them do).
You can use any of the good VGA monitors with the VGA card.

I hope this helps.

Your T1000 is a fine machine. However, you will not be able to add VGA or
too much of anything else. Most new programs are geared toward the 386SX and
the 808x and 80286 are going the way of the TI99-4A.

The crux of the matter here is "what you think." If your T1000 does the
things you need it to do, it is the computer for you.

installed it as Com 2, but Telix would not recognize it. Next he put it

to use the autodialer feature of deskmate.

I know that I can check com ports under d-bug. I have misplaced the info on

RE: old basic programs (Re: Msg 19594)
     From: SANDLINJ To: MIKE6201

One note first. Depending on which version of basic you are using,
you may not be able to program for better than CGA! And the best
GW-BASIC I have played with, only does as good as EGA. Any how, here
is a list of the associated screens and numbers:
Screen MODE Resolution Colors Requires
----------- ---------- -------- --------
     0 * Text only 2 of 16 CGA
     1 320 x 200 4 of 16 CGA
     2 640 x 200 2 of 16 CGA
     3 ** 160 x 200 16 of 16 TGA
     4 ** 320 x 200 4 of 16 TGA
     5 ** 320 x 200 16 of 16 TGA
     6 ** 640 x 200 4 of 16 TGA
     7 320 x 200 16 of 16 EGA
     8 640 x 200 16 of 16 EGA
     9 640 x 350 16 of 64 EGA
    10 640 x 350 4 of 8 EGA
----------- ---------- -------- --------
* Mode 0 requires CGA for COLOR attributes.
**Modes 3, 4, 5 and 6 available only on Tandy 1000's.
Text on 160 x 200 is 20 Characters per line
Text on 320 x 200 is 40 Characters per line
Text on 640 x ... is 80 Characters per line

So you would try to match the resolution and colors from the T1000
mode SCREEN command to that of the EGA or CGA SCREEN command.

Hope this helps.

If your T1000 is the VERY first model of 1000's then NO VGA ALLOWED!
If you have the T1000A, you might be able to find a BIOS upgrade that
would allow VGA, but I'm not sure. The T1000SX and later can except
VGA cards. The sales staff of Radio Shack stores usually has a fairly
high turnover rate, and the ones you talked to may not be familiar
with the Early T1000's.

Remember this though, you got a heck of a machine for when it was
made, and most of what you have added can be moved to new machines
(except, I believe, a hard drive.) So you decide, how badly do you
want to spend the money. You can still do a lot of computing on the
T1000.

(My wife is using my T1000SX, I moved the modem, mouse and serial I/O
to my T3000NL).

If you have the "original" 1000 then you probably shouldn't invest too much
more in it. My originial 1000 began acting up just in the last few weeks.
To my unpleasant surprise I've learned that some of the parts are NO
longer available, apparently from any regular channel. I had tried non-
Tandy sources first, figuring to save money. For the most part I struck
out. Finally I contacted Tandy in Fort Worth and was informed that the ICs
I wanted were no longer available. Tandy had exhuasted their supply and would
not be restocking, even though they supposedly have a commitment to stock parts
for all of their computers for at least seven years after a model is
discontinued, or so I was told back in 1985. It's a solid machine, but with
the above news it might not be prudent to invest much in it. As to VGA,
apparently that is not possible due
to the BIOS which Tandy refused to upgrade to allow for VGA.
You can get some good 386SX systems for a pretty low price. ...Jay.

If you have a Tandy 1000 or 1000A, it will not support VGA. There are third
party sources that make an EGA video adaptor for the 1000, however.

As for spending your money (a grand for a new system) -- that is up to you.

The SCSI drive interface copies its ROM to high memory when the computer
boots. You must tell the 5150 that area of high memory is reserved for the
SCSI ROM code. Look in the manual and see if this is explained. If not,
get hold of the 5150 manufacturer and ask them about SCSI compatibility.

     TL1000 Floppys
     From: FREDBERNEY To: GREGSHULTZ (NR)

I have a Tandy 1000 TL. It came with one 3 1/2" drive. I added a 5 1/4" drive
several years ago and it worked fine. Then last year
I added a second 3 1/2" drive. I also have a 40meg hard drive and upgraded to
MSDOS 5.0. My original two floppy drives work but the new 3 1/2" dirve has
never worked properly.

The computer is set up as follows:
DRIVE DISCRIPTION
A 3 1/2" FLOPPY
B 3 1/2" FLOPPY
C HARD DRIVE
D HARD DRIVE
E 5 1/4" FLOPPY

When I try to format a disk in the B drive, I get a disk eror, although I can
put
the same disk in the A drive and it formats. I have gone into SETUPTL and set
as much as I could. The setup program does not have three floppys as an option.

When I run PCTOOLS, it does not recognize the second 3 1/2" drive.

After reading your "Answer Service" column in PCM, I have a hunch that I need
to give some kind of identification of the drives in my config. sys file. Am
I correct and if so what?

Thanks for your help.

If you 3.5 drive is "internal" you ned to use DRIVPARM, if it is "external"
you need DRIVER. Let's take an external 3.5 - 1.44 meg drive first. You would
add to your CONFIG.SYS file, this line:

DEVICE=C:\DOS\DRIVER.SYS /d:2 /f:7

If it is an internal 3.5 - 1.44 meg drive, you add:

DRIVPARM=/d:2 /f:7

Ok -- let's take the DRIVPARM approach. In your CONFIG.SYS, add this line:

DRIVPARM = /d:1 /c /f:7

Change the "/f:7" to "/f:2" if the drive is a 720K

This will define the drive parameters for DR DOS. I *think* that DR DOS is
expecting either a 720K or 1.44M floppy and is being fooled when it finds
the opposite. I am not sure why this is happening -- maybe because of the
Tandy BIOS. In any event, see if this will make a difference. We could have
used DRIVER.SYS, but you said that DR DOS "does see" the drive, so DRIVPARM
is the logical approach.

I have low-level formated, run fdisk, & re-formatted the drive on numerous

Does MLITE handle the front end automatically or do I need to do something
else?
Just thought of something. The phone number I was given by DELPHI must not
be a direct number, but one through another network. I probable need to
select something besides direct dial. I'll give that a try.
Thanks again for your help.

Anyone know why a Tandy SL/2 won't write to a hard drive? This exact same card

And if so, can it be disabled? I heard that it may have something to do with a
jumper on the SL/2 mother board marked "E", but I thought that was to change
the interupt. I can't find anymore details about that.

RE: T2500 and modem (Re: Msg 19644)
     From: MISAL To: CDRDS

If the modem is internal it "grabs" COM1, even if your external port is also
configured for COM1. Generally what confuses people is that a mouse driver
being loaded that points to the mouse being on COM1 will not allow an
external modem (set for COM1, also) to respond.

The modem, itself can be set up for at least COM1 or COM2 (usually 3 and 4,
also). If you place the modem on COM2, you must set the modem *for* COM2
usage. Messing with the IRQ is not necessary in most cases. What you are
doing is re-routing the interrupt addresses without regard to the actual
physical port.

The key here is to make sure that the COM port you select for the modem is
not in use and set the modem to the COM port that is open (the default
setting for modems is COM1 -- if something is using COM2, set the modem
*and* your communications software for COM2).

If by formatting, you mean the DOS FORMAT, you may need to have the drive
"low-level" formatted. Some IDE drives need special software to do this.
Check with the distributor where you bought the drive about a low-level
format -- don't attempt to low-level the IDE drive unless you *know* the
procdeure. If you do it wrong, the drive will not read/write at all!

On the front of the drive is 3 square things, one is a light that lights
up and has the word ACTIVE below it, the other one is a switch that has
PROTECT written on it, and the other one is a power button.
Like I said, we got it so we could read from it just perfectly, but any
attempt to write to the hard drive causes a complete system lockup.
The activate light comes on and stays on, if this is the write-fault
jumper, where would it be located at on the Winchester Hard Drive

system, but not the one we want to use it on. This computer does NOT
have a CMOS either. Thanks for your help. Jeff

The modem origionaly would not operate on com 1 or 2, so the installer set it
for 3, and it worked. Then I came into the picture. I ran modem doctor, as
you sugested, and found that them modem was reconized as com3. Deskmate would
not work, because, according to tandy, it will only pick com1 or 2. (the
auto dialer feature on deskmate , that is) . I then set the modem for com 2,
since the 2500 has a ps2 mouse, (which is not supose to be a com port user)
and a serial port (not used) for com 1. The modem would not respond, so I
change the interupt toIRQ3 from 4. The modem responded. Now the problem is
that the modem's speaker don't work. My friend says that he can live with
that, but I am not comfortable with it. The modem can be set for com 1 thru 4
, and I believe there are 4 posible irq settings also.

One thing that I have noticed is that the program hangs up after retreving

like that. It then issues another prompt and MLITE just stops. I then have
to manually enter a command to get things going. Not being that familiar

quirky with that modem. Look at the manual -- there is a way to turn on the

What he needs to know is how to use his external modem with it!!!! He has
the original parellel port and the serial port. He bought a DB25 to DB9
adapter from the shack to connect his modem to the serial port. He is
unable to communicate with his modem. He is using the Procomm program.
Is he making the right connections?? If so, what does he need to tell
Procomm in the way of settings etc., to make it work with the modem? If he
needs another card, what type does he need and where is the best bargain
for one?? He is using a 1200 baud hayes compatible modem. Avetex 1200E I
think is the modem he is using.

He would like to get set-up so that he can download some files from BBS'S.
He is not a user of Delphi yet. I keep telling him tto join, but he will get
around to it sometime. Meanwhile he needs your help!!! I'll be back on here
this evening to read your replies.

Danny,

Beyond the obvious (perhaps it's only obvious to us technicians) of
making sure the connector is good (YES, they can come from the store
already bad.) and that the com ports and the com program agree, I can
only suggest trying a Null modem connector.

A Null modem is simply a connector with the wiring rearranged on the
inside (no electronic parts, just wires). Theoretically, the external
modem was designed to plug directly to a computer with out a null
modem. However, we are dealing with a Tandy here!

Make sure to borrow the null modem (unless you want one for your tool
kit).

I will presume that the TX is still set to the factory specs. That
should mean the the serial port is COM1:. So that is what Procomm
should be set to. If you haven't already, you could try COM2, since
it won't hurt anything to try.

the Tandy Sig and also the marker for cataloging. This stopped the program
from giving a DA GENERAL command. I also created a SIG for PC and then ran
the program with both SIG turned on.

MLITE went to the TANDY sig searched for messages and then left that forum
and went onto the PC forum. There is seemed to do all the things it should
have. From there is logged off. So to answer your question, yes your idea
worked.

The modem must be set from COM1. Procomm must also be set for COM1. If

I don't know what area you're in, but you can get a lot of
computer for much less than $2000. A 40 MHz 386 runs about
$750 with one floppy, 64 K cache, IDE controlller, 1 MB RAM,
and 101 key keyboard. Add $300 for a mid-range VGA monitor
& card and $200 for a 40 MB hard disk, and you're up to about
$1250. I'll bet Tandy can't come close to that - I wish they
could. Maybe my Tandy stock would go up!

All hardware and software for my hard drive are from RS, for RS, right down

price for what is basically an XT w/a 286 processor upgrade, as opposed to
spending the same amount for a 486/33 w/more RAM, more HD space, VGA card

closed the doors and emptied the building one weekend, leaving no notice or

Dear Sir:
I have tried all suggestions, and I am sorry to report that DR DOS 6.0
and B: drives on 1000-TL computers are in-compatable. Neither DRIVPARM, nor
DRIVER.SYS, nor all the king's, nor his men will make them compatable, with
out a bug fix to DR-DOS or perhaps the Tandy BIOS. If you have any other
thoughts on this matter or influence with TANDY or DR, please let me know.
My machine is all Tandy. I am going back to Tandy MS-DOS 3.3, and everyone
with two drives on their 1000-TL can save the cost of buying DR DOS 6.0.

Cool down on DR DOS, It is far superior tha anything Bill Gates & Co.

Go to your MS DOS disk and copy Setuptl2.com to your DR DOS directory.
Run SETUPTL2/A and set your drives, press F1 to reset the EPROM registers

     From: NYMAN To: ALL

Since entering the world of PCs I find I am more confused than ever.

I bought a used AT mother board that I want to put in my XT computer.

Could someone please tell if there is a differance in boards for the
XT & At mother board. I bought my XT used and don't have any manuals
for the boards. In otherwords, do I have to buy new boards?

I have the following boards: VGA, Floppy, comb. Serial/Par/hard drive.

I also have a Seagate 225 and a MiniScribe 6053 which I believe to be
MFM drives and which I believe could be chained. Correct? I have subst.
the 6053 for the 225 without sucess so maybe it has problems, but I may
be overlooking something.

I saw a ribbon cable for two floppies where 7 wires are twisted, but on
mine there are not. What does the twist do?

One thing I have found is that there is not as much interest in hardware
modifing in the PC world as in the CoCo. Almost all mag. articles deal
with software.

Thanks -- jim

Yes, I also have DOS 5.0, However, I was told that the MS-DOS version doesn't
work right onthe Tandys, and that you need the tandy version of 5.0 to run
on the older Tandys like the TX. Thank you Mary

Mary, according to the "horse's mouth" at Tandy, Ed Juge, MS-DOS 5.0 runs just
fine on all the Tandy machines. On some of the 1000 series, the jumpers had to
be set different on the drives than from the standard IBM set
tings. Mike cprobably be more specific. I can't remeber the details off hand.
The interupts are different on the earlier 1000 models. I thought that the TX
had that fixed though to conform with the standard.
I'm also not familiar with specific drive numbers, but I'm assuming you
don't have a IDE drive, but either a RLL orMML, or whatever. I believe doing a
low level format on a IDE drive can cause
problems. Again, I should leave this answer to the more knowledgeable. Jay

Tandy sells the MS-DOS version of MS-DOS 5.0! The cavet is that they
don't include all the drivers that come with the "Other" version of
MS-DOS (that is to say, you won't get the whole package from Radio
Shack . . . BUT it doesn't contain ANY Tandy modifications).

According to all sources I have found, MS-DOS 5.0 should run just fine
on ANY, and I repeat ANY, Tandy MS-DOS computer. Even the T-1000EX!

Please note - you will not have access to the ROM-Deskmate on the
T-1000TX, in fact you will have to disable "Boot from ROM" before you
can get MS-DOS 5.0 to boot on the machine. (Or did the TX even have
the Deskmate in ROM? I can't remember!)

You will gain no memory advantage with DOS 5.0 unless you are now running
DOS 4.01 (DOS 5.0 takes up less conventional memory). You will not be able to
take advantage of HMA or UMB (memory above 640K).

You might find the new commands, like DOSKEY, helpful -- this would be your
