You can actually assign where the file will be stored. When prompted for the
filename (by Deskmate) type A:MYFILE.ZIP or C:\MYFILE.ZIP. If you have not
assigned a download directory the files *should* for to C:\DESK.

the Seagate configuration is NOT a member. Using a program called SSTOR, I can

Have you low-level formatted the hard drive, Randy? It sounds like the
low-level on the drive is for another computer type. You can call the
low-level format from the WD controller's ROM using Debug. Start Debug
and at the prompt type: g=c800:5 {and press Enter}. This will start the
format. You must then partition the drive with FDISK and do a DOS FORMAT.

If Debug calls the controller ROM routine and the computer locks -- then you
need a BIOS upgrade. But, as I recall (vague recollection) the 3000 should
be able to handle the low-level routine.

Yes Bill, you need to make sure that lines 2 and 3 (send, receive)
on the 100 are the same as the standard PC serial I/O. If I recall
correctly, they are.

The null modem adaptor swaps these lines (2 from the 100 goes to 3 on the

Just thought you would like to know that I finally solved my "Invalid
Command.com, Cannot Load Command.com, System Halted" problem (message 18604).

It turns out that I had a very fussy Direct Memory Access chip. The extra heat
from adding the hard card was enough to cause problems with the DMA chip after
the computer warmed up. This caused problems in high memory, which is where
the DOS checksum is stored. Thus, whenever DOS needed to reload Command.com,
it would incorrectly read the checksum from high memory. Since this checksum
didn't agree with the one calculated when Command.com was reloaded, the
computer would tell me that it had reloaded an invalid version and stop.

Changing out this $3 chip has solved my problem. And I thought I finally had a
good excuse to pitch my old 1000 and upgrade to a newer computer!!

My question is, "What is you used, say, 128K X 4 DRAM chips.
Will the computer be able to use this extra memory?" Or will it just be lost

Procomm Plus works with a mouse. It DOES require a mouse driver to be loaded
first. If typing MOUSE before running Procomm Plus is too advance for you,
or modifying your CONFIG.SYS (use the TEXT program in Deskmate ((I think
that is the name, I don't use Deskmate)) and add the line DEVICE = MOUSE.SYS)
you need to learn more about your system. The more you do with a computer,
the more call you will have to modify both CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT.

typing "mouse" before using ProComm does not implement the mouse in procomm.
there is no reason to make any changes in the config.sys or autoexec.bat if
ProComm states that it supports a mouse and one has an operating mouse.
It is this sort of attitude that you have to modify your system to accomodate
software that says it does something but doesn't which is holding back micros

A mouse driver does have to be installed. Most people that I know that use a
mouse, load the driver with the configeration file. Without a mouse, how is
e driver, how is a program to know which port to look at, (the serial, the ps
style etc.) Deskmate does things a bit diferently than most. This make first
time use of the computer easier, but unless one writes their own config.sys
and changes setup, they are stuck with tandys simple stuff. Typeing mouse
will run mouse.sys and cause a temporary and easy fix. The problem is that
one does not have an operating mouse untill it is implemented.

the mouse.com and mouse.sys are in "c:\" and the installation program for
ProCommPlus puts it in a separate subdirectory; so typing mouse if one chooses

It's not his wanting help that bothered me, I will tell him how to do what
he wants to do. It is his saying that Procomm wasn't a good program and
people shouldn't buy it because it says it supports a mouse and he feels that
it doesn't because you have to load a mouse driver. Changing your CONFIG.SYS
or AUTOEXEC.BAT are not advanced procedures, all/most computer users should
know how to change these two files. I might have come down a little hard on
him, but I know Procomm supports a mouse (like they advertise they do) and
certainly fell he is out of line saying they don't.

If each drive only has settings for device 0 or device 1 then you're out of luck

What is happening is that the drives that are set the same are conflicting and
locking the system. Setting 0 designates that drive as drive A while setting
1 designates as drive B. Most floppy drives have settings 0,1,2,3. The other
jumpers should be okay. They just control various aspects of the in use light
and motor control plus a couple of other things. You need a drive that can be
set something other than 0(A) or 1(B).

THrowing in my two cents. What you say may be true but IBM type machines were
never designed to use a mouse like the MacIntosh's so you have to LOAD a
program that connects the computer with the mouse. Then most programs will
work with the mouse if they were designed to. One thing you need to do though
maybe, is tell procomm what port your mouse is connected too. Only recently
are IBM type programs such as Deskmate and Windows 3.0 and Geoworks being
written to directly support a mouse without HAVING to LOAD a separate program
to run the mouse.

Procomm is not being deceptive in its advertising. Maybe you didn't read the
manual completely to figure out how to make the mouse work with Procomm. Almost

every non-graphical program (ie Procomm, Lotus 123 etc) needs the mouse program
loaded for the mouse to work within that program.

[message #330 from BBS SIG posted by user SVEIT, 9/11/91]

This is to alert all BBS operators. Your hobby is in great danger AGAIN! New
York State has just put into effect a new tax on ALL BBS downloads. This
applies to shareware AND public domain software downloads. The BBS is expected
to put a "value" on all software downloaded and pay a tax to the state for each
download. In addition, each BBS has to register as a "business." The law took
effect on September 1, 1991 as New York State Senate Bill #6078 and Assembly
Bill #8491. The law covers all BBS's as well as commercial services such as
this one! New York BBS SYSOPS meeting with members of the Assembly were told
that they might be exempted if they accepted no donations or had no
requirements to join before downloading! This is not acceptable to NY Sysops.
Many of the local boards have shut down downloading until this is repealed.
Please tell all NY SYSOPS about this as it was a sleeper and no one knew it was
even in the works!

[and this message was posted by TICTOC, 9/12/91]

I just heard this on the radio tonight. An interview with the folks who run
the Dorsai Diplomatic Mission BBS in NYC. The bill was attached to an
environmental bill in a very sneaky fashion. For those out-of-staters, if this
bill succeeds here it is sure to spread to other states. We should all write
to the legislators in Albany. This is likely to shutdown Delphi too. No one
knows the name of the individual slimebucket who wrote this bill. If I find
out, I will let all know......scared and mad..... <<<JGR>>>

As I see it the problem is the low-level format. Now, there is software
specially for low-leveling the Miniscribe IDE drive. Without this software
you will not be able to format the drive *under* the Tandy system.

High-level format (or FDISK) will not help as the drive may have been high
leveled on another system -- which the Tandy does not understand.

Suggest you call Minscribe and get information about low-leveling the drive.

Ok Mike.. we have the host card from Miniscribe to access the implanted low
level
format routine in the card's BIOS..and we actually went thru that route..now
though,
we are getting the problems stated earlier about the incorrect amounts of data
free
and also a new one !! the data integrity, it seems is not reliable !! in fact
all that
boots from it is dos..so we are having fun..the drive is supposed to handle 805
cylinders, 4 heads and 26 sectors per track... but when it displays the info it
tells
us that 27 megs are free after formatting c:/s and then we dir the drive and
only
get 18 megs free.. weird !!
When we try running a file from the drive we saved to it, we get lockups due to
the
data not all being read by the drive.. maybe someone else has run into this ??

Well.. we are still plugging away on the Miniscribe drive to Tandy TL/2
implant..
One thing we figured out was that by taking another Miniscribe (from my working
IBM system)
and plugging it into the TL/2, it worked fine !
So the conclusion we came to was that either the drive was faulty right out of
the box, or we botched it when we used debug to low level format it.
Now we have to return that drive to the discount house we picked it up from and
exchange it for another drive kit, in hopes that the second drive will work as
it
should without any divine intervention needed !!
Sorry to plague all thecallers here with the drive problems but it is indeed
very frustrating to say the least when Tandy is unwilling to help because it is
not a drive they sell for the system.

Results later after the second drive will be in order !!

Oops, Bill,

Let's not get a rumor started here . . .

. . . by just having the decimal in the wrong place.
The latest version of DeskMate is 3.05. There is no version 3.5. The
confusion arises when people simply refer to 3.05 as 3.5. This is just a bit
of "shorthand," so to speak, and one that had led to much confusion.

Even the people at Tandy call the latest version 3.5, but if you press the
issue with them, they'll say "Oh well, I mean 3.05; I just left out the zero."

I help out with the DeskMate Forum on another network and I am quite sure
of what I am reporting here. When there is a DeskMate 3.5, I'll be one of
the first to be sent a copy. The very latest version is 3.05.

  Just sticking in a third message . . .

. . . in an effort at rumor control. DeskMate 3.05
is the latest version. See my Message 19432.

Leaving out that zero has caused a lot of confusion.

Even among "versions," there are variances. For instance, the DeskMate on
the Tandy 1500HD I am using at the moment is not exactly like the DeskMate on
other machines in that my version has Power and Setup modules that are used
  only on this portable.

Furthermore, some versions of Version 3.05 have a Fonts application, while
earlier versions of this version do not have the Fonts application. No wonder
  people get confused.

You need to tell DOS that the drive is present. Look on your DOS disk for a
file called DRIVPARM or DRIVER. Then, look these up in your DOS manual for
the correct switches to use and the syntax to add it to your CONFIG.SYS boot
file.

Hi Bill,

I don't check this forum often ('bout once a month, though I may
change that), so this is a bit late.

Please don't take offense of messages that seem to have an
unpleasant attitude. Most of us understand what its like not
being a power user on a PC. At some time or another, we were
that way as well.

Your point about the MAC is very good. But remember the MAC was
designed around the Mouse and the Graphic interface, using
rodents on IBM machines is a differenct story.

One advantage of MS-DOS computers is their extreme flexibility.
Unfortunately, that flexibility has a cost: They're hard to use!
Most of the components used on a MS-DOS type computer are
actually add-ons. The naked PC is only intelligent enought to
understand its keyboard and possible the floppy drive. From
there everything must be supported by software, or controller
card or both.

Video, Hard drives, Modems, Midi, Sound boards,
Game (Joystick) Port, Parallel and Serial I/O, Hand Scanners,
Digitizers, Tape backup, Scientific Data Acquisition devices,
Voice Recognition, Voice synthesis, Optical Character
recognition, Laser Printers, Hetrogenous LAN, Fax, CD-ROM,
Uninteruptible Power suppy, and mouse support are all add-in.
But they all can be done on a PC.

On the Older Macs, you only had one choice for a mouse port, and
only one choice for video, and only one choice for sound, and
only one type of floppy drive, and only one choice for your
keyboard. So of course, that means its easy to write software
that uses those items. On the MS-DOS PC, however, not only are
there multiple types of devices, there are several options for
installing them.

I have a CMS-401, Midi card, a Sound Blaster Sound Card, Virtual Graphic
Adapter, Microsoft Mouse, SR2000 printer, 1.44 M 3.5" floppy,
1.2 M 5 1/4 " floppy, 50 Meg Hard drive, and of course my 2400
bps modem. The software to run all of those Items have to know:
Where to find the device, what kind of device it is, and which
interrupt the device uses. If I had an (older) MAC I might not
have been able to put some of those devices on the computer at
the same time, because the allocations are static, and often
overlap. Of course the common devices are carefully
predetermined so as not to overlap, and the problem seldom
actually ever comes up!

Actually, only the software for the modem had to be configured!
The IBM PC has several "standard" locations for modems, and mine
wasn't where the Manufacturer expected it (because my mouse was
there!) so I had to tailer my setup to handle that.

Most newer software does try to find the resources on the
machine, but not all the devices can be identified. The mouse
and the Modem look the same to the software (they both use a
serial port). The Midi and the Sound card look much alike. Only
devices like the Hard drive, and the Video adapter are readily
apparent to the software.

These sort comings / advantages (strange, but true they are both
at the same time) can be a royal pain to work with. Sometimes it
isn't worth the effort to learn, sometimes it is.

Computers are supposed to make our work easier, make us work
better, not make us work more, not make us work harder! If you
can afford a MAC, go for it. I haven't seen more power, and user
friendlyness wrapped up in one package anywhere else. Apple is
really proud of their product. And they price it accordingly.

So those of us on meager budgets make do by learning the innard
of our toys.

Hope I didn't get to boring!

RE: This is getting frustrating... (Re: Msg 19450)
     From: ZAZOU To: RANDYBARRON

Well, there's more to do than a mere DRIVPARM in the CONFIG.SYS file to let DOS
gives you the C: prompt!

Beside, I doubt that you need the drivparm statement in the first place.
/D:nn means the drive #. 0=A, 1=B, etc... Propably 2 in your case, I guess...

/F:nn is the media type. The 2 you use is really for 720K 3-inch floppy disk
drive. Put 5 for hard disk.
drop the /C, it indicates that the device provides door-lock status support.
By definition, your harddisk isn't removable like floppies...

/N indicates that the device is not removable.
then you have to figure out numbers for /H:nnn /S:nnn and /T:nnn ,
respectively the number of read/write heads, the number of sectors per track
and the number of tracks per side.

That's the info for DRIVPARM.

I would rather wonder if there is ever an active DOS partition on your drive or
even formatted for that matter, that would be the things I would check first,
and my feeling is that DRIVPARM isn't the medicine you're looking for.

Last, a 300ms hard-disk sounds terrible by today's standard (and probably I'll
win the understatement-of-the-month award for that). Even the cheapest and
slowest drives of todays do perform a lot better.

Last-last, I question the reliability of such an antique drive. Will still
work months ahead, without too many bad sectors reducing your useable disk
storage?

I think you should check about both type of formats, and if it is partitionned
as an active DOS partition. Hope this rings a bell....

The 8450XT drive has to be used with the controller card made for the drive.
We had tried it without the card and could not get it to work properly.
The 8225XT drive however will work fine but is only a 20 meg, but it worked
by plugging it directly into the motherboard IDE socket !
So you see, there is money to be saved by not buying Tandy Smartdrives...
Especially note that these drives were all new and selling for less than half of

CMOS is memory that holds the "set-up parameters" -- it is held in memory by
a battery within your computer. I *think* that the 3000 had CMOS memory. If
change a floppy, hard drive or video, you must reset these parameters.

Usually you are asked at boot-up if you want to change the CMOS set-up. Or,
sometimes you must run a "set-up program." If you have the manual, it should
tell you.

SETUPNL.COM. I have a 3000NL myself. I imagine the others in
the 3000 line have the same program. It came on a separate disk
called UTILITIES (mine is a 720Kb 3.5" floppy).

The CMOS contains information like what kind of floppies you have
installed, what kind of Hard drive (to a degree, anyway), how
much memory you have installed, the Time and Date, whether you
have enhanced graphics, and a couple of other Items.

The CMOS is backed up by a battery. If the battery ever dies,
you'll get a message when you boot telling you the configuration
is invalid, and tells you to run the setup program.

Make sure you have the SETUPNL.COM program in your path (or
simply available so that if you type DIR you can see its name,
size, date, and time). If you have an Older 3000, the setup
program may have a different name, But it should be on the
UTILITIES disk.

Type: SETUPNL [press ENTER]

You get a message about how the program is used to change the
CMOS settings, and to press [ENTER] to continue.

Next it asks if the time and date are correct. Press Y and
[ENTER]. The next should be a list of the configuration. Mine
looks like this:

+-------------------------------------+

The following information is required
for correct operation of your computer.

The current settings of your options :

Diskette Drive A: is 1.44M
Diskette Drive B: is 1.2M
Diskette Drive Swap Flag is OFF
Fixed Disk Drive C: is TYPE 12
Fixed Disk Drive D: is NOT INSTALLED
System Base Memory is 640K
Expansion Memory is 384K
Prime Video Adapter is EGA
CPU Speed is 10MHz
BUS Speed is 8MHz

Are these options correct
(Reply Y or N then <enter>)

?

+-------------------------------------+

Note that TYPE 12 is the closest for the hard drive in MY
machine. A 52M IDE (Quantum). And EGA is the highest video card
recognized by the CMOS setup (I actually have VGA).

I run my BUS at 8 MHz rather than 10 MHz for compatibility with
my option boards. The thing locks up at a BUS speed of 10 MHz (I
never bothered to figure out which board, since I am going to
keep them all anyhow.)

After you run the SETUP program the system will reboot. That
makes the new setup take effect.

If you are worried about running the SETUP program, you can try
calling a local Tandy Computer Center (if there is still one
around! They are shutting them down in favor of the normal
showroom stores).

I'm afraid a full tutorial may be beyond the scope of an online
session. But feel free to ask **ANY** question you have. If I
can't answer your question, I'll try to get an answer, or someone
else online may be able to help.

Yes, there are external hard drives that connect to the parallel port.
However, there is another way to expand your computer. Both DCS Industries
(1-800-537-3539) and Computer Mechanix (1-800-448-1436) have a "Slot Box"
200 watt power supply and 7 additional expansion slots (there
are even 2 - 5 1/4" drive bays and 1 - 3 1/2" bay. All you need is one
empty slot in your computer and you GAIN seven more slots! I haven't used
it yet, but I am considering getting one for my T1000 EX (yes, they even have e
the adapter for the EX/HX computers. I hope this helps, Both companies have
been advertising in PCM Magazine for quite awhile. Mary D.
