     Keyboard for Tandy 1000TX
     From: SHAGGER To: ALL

I have a Tandy1000tx that's about 5 years old. The keys are starting to
stick and squeak. I used to see ads in the "Computer Shopper" for compatible
keyboards that could be purchased from sources other than radio shack, even
101 keyboards and boards with built in calculators, etc. I haven't seen them
in a while though. The problem is that the TX is originally equipped with a
88 key board. To upgrade to the 101 kb you must first purchase the kb itself
at about $130. Additionally, you must buy an adaptor which is $100. This
seems a bit steep to me...does anyone know of a place where I can purchase an
extended (101+) keyboard that is compatible with the TX? Any and all help is
greatly appreciated. Squeakily I remain...Shagger

Dear JAX...
Hello, I am a Tandy 1000 Tx user. I have owned this system since Dec 1987,
when I first bought it. I am running a Maxtor 86 Mb hd w/ Seagate
controller. I have been having trouble with the hd. It works fine 80% of
the time, however, occasionally the controller refuses to recognize
anything! I don't know what it is, just a MAGNETIC ANOMOLY or what?

By the way, I have upgraded the memory on my 1000 Tx to 768K, but I really
can't see any big changes! Did I waste the $60 ???

JAX....
I have a Maxtor 86 Mb hd plugged into a 8 bit expansion slot on my Tandy
1000 Tx. I had to pull out my Sanyo 32 Mb hd, but both have a Seagate
controller. Is there any way I can put in the Sanyo to work with the
Maxtor? I thought I could "piggy-back" the two, but I've been told that it
is not possible on a 1000 Tx because the BIOS is not user-configurable!
Please clarify!

720K disks are NOT compatible with a 1.4K drive. 1.4K disks use much smaller
magnetic particles for storing data. Similarly, one shouldn't use 1.4K disks

In PCM magazine (the sponsor for this SIG) I just found an ADD
from DoDads Peripherals that has the DataDesk 101 Key Enhanced
Keyboard. They advertise it at $139.00 part number DD-KB02.
They have an 800 number: 1-800-962-0862. I believe the
keyboard is complete as purchased (no adapter is needed).

They have other TX stuff as well.

I don't know if the keyboard is worth $139.00. I've never dealt
with DoDads Peripherals. If you do get the keyboard from them,
let me know what you think - my wife uses a Tandy 1000 SX (with
the same keyboard as your TX). I've thought about upgrading it,
but the money and desire never came together.

Some one forgot to tell my 3.5" 1.44M floppy drive that it can't
handle 720K disks. It does it all the time. All the new
software I install, and all the data I exchange with my wife's PC
are on 3.5" 720K disks. I can format, write to, and read from
720K disks with my 1.44M drive. My wife's PC can read and write
to 3.5" 720K disks formatted on my PC (as long as they ARE 720K
media and not 1.44M).

Now, it doesn't work the other way around - the 720K drive won't
even start to recognize a 1.44M floppy - formatted to 1.44M or
720K.

does not boot at all. In order for me to run mode.com I would have to have
booted the sytem with DOS. But the system doesn't even initialize the floppy
when I turn it on. IMMEDIATELY when I turn on the computer it displays the
error I showed from the previous message. The system does not beep, access the
floppy, or anything, it simply displays the error message. I tried removing
the (2) memory cards installed to bring the system back down to the original
256K memory but there was no change, same error message. I'm beginning to
think the video chip may be bad or the portion of memory used the the video
may be bad since one of the error messages showed a read/write problem to
an address (refer to first message). We've got a CM-5 RGBI monitor laying
around here at work, I'll try that next to see if it changes anything. If
you have any more suggestions PLEASE let me know. Thanks for your input.

What word processor are you using. Some, like Q&A Write for DeskMate, allow
you to embed printer commands in the text. DeskMate's Text program will
easily allow boldface and underlining, but you will have to tell it what

I'm using word processor in Deskmate 3. Easy to select and produce boldface
and underlining on screen. But these features don't print on paper, using
DMP130A printer. The type simply appears without the bold and underlining. I
suspect the problem is the
printer needs more instruction - probably to accept non-ASCII text, since
Deskmate converts the text from ASCII to non-ASCII when tghe boldface and
underlining features are emoployed. But I don't understand how to give it this

DeskMate should be sending the commands to your printer with the text. There
could be a communication problem if the DIP switches on the printer have been
changed, or if you are inadvertently sending the wrong commands to the printer.
I'll try something with my printer (DMP-133, part of the same family) and get

may be loose or maybe one of the drive connections is loose. Check em' out.
You may also want to do a full backup and then redo the lowlevel format to
refresh the drive if it hasn't been done lately. The 128K upgrade is only
for the Tandy 16 color Graphics modes so the only increase in performance
you'll ever see is in the speed of the Tandy graphics modes. It wasn't a waste

doesn't seem to be enough third-party support for it. Back to the Windows
question, I was told by a Radioshack Sales person, that I could run Windows
but only in real-time mode. What is real-time mode? Thanks in advance.
Also if there are anyother Tandy 1000TX owners out there running Windows

You'll definately want both VGA and at LEAST 2Megs of Expanded Memory
before trying WINDOZE on the TX. I have it on my TL, but I use GeoWorks more
due to the Sluggish speed of Windows on my TL. It's likely to be even slower
on your machine. I'd reccommend you stick with GeoWorks unless you can afford
to throw away money on Windows. On you machine as well as mine, it's just not
worth the price with it's slow and unresponsive performance. If you want to
use Windows 3.0, you're better off buying a whole new PC with at least 4meg
of memory and at least a true 286 platform which the TX isn't.

I have a Tandy 1000 SL/2. I bought a NEC V30 chip from JDR Mircodevices for
$13.95 + shipping. I'm not going to open my machine but the invoice has
the following numbers.... NEC UPD70116 8mhz 4op My chip does have
V-30 stamped on it. Anyway, it works fine; though the speed increase was
not all that noticeable. There is a notch on the chip. On my machine the
notch faces to the right when I'm looking at the front-to-back view of
my computer. If you put the chip in the right slot and oriented the notch

Hi there! If you would like information on uploading, you can
look under Workspace and see either HELP or UPLOAD for more info.
You can find Workspace right here in the Tandy group menu
(by exiting from Forum).
If it is just a simple text message, you could probably
use a simple method like buffer capture.
I am not an expert at these things, but I think
you can probably do it without a special utility.

In one part of your message you said a Tandy 1000HX and then TX. I would
assume you mean the TX. Running Windows on any 286 will be a pain, but
it can be done. However, you need at absolute minimum 2 megs of memory,
and realistically 4 megs to do anything meaningful. I don't know off
hand if you can add that much memory to a TX or if it can be addressed

I bought Microsoft's DOS-5 upgrade as soon as it came out, and installed it
on a Tandy TL-2. When I booted up, the machine locked up. I didn't know
that, when starting up from ROM, the Tandy would not "see" the DOS-5...it
only recognizes the DOS 3.3 that it came with. By changing the setup to
start from the hard disk, the DOS 5 works fine; however, the Deskmate
program will not run because of the ROM problem. So, since I wanted to use
DOS 5, and since I rarely use Deskmate, I kept DOS 5 and routinely start up
from the hard disk. For those rare occasions when I want to go into the
Deskmate program, I made a DOS 3.3 systems disk with its own AUTOEXEC.BAT
and CONFIG.SYS files and boot from it. The Microsoft version of DOS 5 and
the Tandy ROM just will not geehaw. I saw a Tandy-licensed version of DOS 5
on the shelf at a Radio Shack recently, but I have no idea what it might or
might not do.

Static electricity, including a built-up charge on your body, can damage a
computer chip.
When you remove the chip from the package, place it on a metal surface (such as
the cover of your computer). Before handling and installing the chip, ground
yourself (simply by touching any object which would normally be a ground for
static electricity). And don't install it while standing on a carpet.

I too am running the fantastic combination of DR DOS 6.0 and Geoworks. I
would like to see TOMMCK try going back into the preferences menu of GW and
select "COMPUTER". Then try selecting IRQ 7 as your printing preference
INSTEAD of either BIOS or DOS. IRQ 7 (shown by Geo as just a plain 7) will
allow your printer to communicate directly with LPT1 instead of going through
the system BIOS. In fact, IRQ 7 should have been the Geoworks default when
you originally installed it. If you are LPT2 instead of LPT1 for some reason,
then you would want to select IRQ 5 instead of 7. I am sure that you will
find that your printing operation will work much faster.

     From: FOOTLOVER To: ALL

I love my little 1400HD! I do have a few questions though. I have contacted
the techies in Fort Worth but have gotten nowhere.

First, I took the cas off my computer to see who made the hard drive. It
was made by ALPS Electric. I am wondering if the heads are self-parking on
power down. If they are, then why does the DOS 3.3 diskette that came with
the computer include SHIPTRAK.COM? I have been using SHIPTRAK before every
power down just to be safe.

Also, do the heads park every time the drive "goes to sleep?" This happens
after three minutes of no disk access. I keep having nightmares of the heads
settling down on my data! Need I worry?

Next, when I attempted to use Norton's CALIBRAT.EXE, I was informed by the
program that it had detected a 'sector-translating' controller and therefore
the low-level format could not be performed. Norton's SYSINFO shows my
hard drive as an ARLL. Some people have told me that my drive is an IDE
but others have said that just because it's sector translating does not mean
it is an IDE. Who's right? I suspect that it is not an IDE because Tandy
included HSECT.COM with the 3.3 disk. I understand that running a low-level
formatter such as HSECT on an IDE can be fatal to the drive. But my
computer owner's manual even speaks of running HSECT! If Norton's CALIBRAT
can't do a low-level format then how can HSECT do one?

HEEEELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLP!!!!!!

As far as heads parking on your data, you don't have to worry. The heads on a

There is no serial port on a 1000HX. You need to obtain a serial port card
that is designed for the HX and EX that fits into the little slot. It would
help to already have the memory expansion card installed, though you could
of course use a serial card without it. I'd check with the third party re-
sellers of Tandy hardware and see who has one. I don't know if Tandy has
any, you should check, but all that EX-HX stuff is discontinued.

     From: RICHARDS49 To: ALL

I am having another quirk with my SL2. When I hit the F12 key which use to
bring up the deskmate interface from the hard drive C: now shows up with the
drive letter C: where it was on the top to indicate what drive I am in but
it also ask for a disk in the A: drive. When I hit the ESC key I get the
proper c: interface. When going out of programs that are run off the
interface I am hit with the same message and have to do the ESC key to get
the screen the way is use to be.
I have added a Sound Blaster this weekend and this may just be the cause of
my quirk. With the execption of the blaster and sound statement in the
autoexec file everything else is the same.
This is only a minor inconvience at best, yet I like the old way better. I
tried running straight from the directory and the same thing happens.
Any ideas.

RE: Tandy 1400HD (Re: Msg 20837)
     From: STEVEP To: ANTHONYKODIS

Tony,

The heads on a hard disk do in fact contact the surface
of the platters when the platters are not spinning. In fact,
the only thing that keeps the heads off the platters is what
is known as the Bernoulli effect, an effect resulting from
the interaction of the spinning platter, the head, and the
air trapped in between the two. It causes the head to be
lifted off the platter surface slightly (a few thousandths
of an inch!) by the air being spun underneath it. That's why
with older drives that did not park the heads when power was
removed, one executed a parking program. This pulled the head
assembly back to the "landing zone", a track that was
otherwise unused by the drive so that if it was damaged by
repeated head landings, it didn't matter. Modern drives

Doesn't that mean that the heads repeatedly land on the platters whenever the
drive is not being accessed, when the power is on? Or are the platters
constantly spinning even when I am not accessing my hard drive.
? From the sounds I hear, I would assume that the platters are not spinning when

the drive is not being accessed, although if they were spinning quietly, the
sounds produced by accessing the drive could be merely the movement of the
heads.
Since my computer is on 24 hours a day, the only time I park the heads is when
I power down for adding components or dust removal operations. Your
clarification makes sense, but raises a few additional questions.

Try changing the IRQ and DMA channels for the Sound Blaster. The default
looks like this in your AUTOEXEC.BAT:

SET BLASTER=A220 I7 D1 T2

The "I7" and "D1" are the two that you must "play with." You may try 2,5 or 10
for the "I" parameter (IRQ) and 0 or 3 for the "D" parameter (DMA).

The platters do spin constantly in hard drives, and most are very
quiet. The heads are the noisiest part of the drive (or rather
the stepper motor of for the heads). It is very important not to
move the computer while it's running because the heads may be
over a track with data, and due to inertia, the heads could
strike the media if the machine is bumped hard enough, the same
reason the heads must be parked when shutting the machine off.

If you've ever been a witness to a head crash on a running hard drive,
you won't soon forget it. It's very loud, and (in our case) you
can smell burning metal. The was on a large industrial type hard
drive for our voice mail system. It literally crashed and
burned!

If the software to low-level your IDE came with the drive -- then, by all
means low-level it. However, if you try and low-level an IDE drive without
the correct software, you will have to send it back to the manufacturer. The
IDE technology is *not* the same as MFM or ESDI -- actual information needed
by the IDE interface (and controller) is embedded on the drive tracks.

Thanks for the idea--I'll give that a shot. Quarterdeck thinks that if my
shadow ram is incompatible, my only option would be using an EMS board, i.e.,
extended memory cannot emulate expanded memory on the 286, regardless of the

options in SETUPXL are to REMAP SHADOW RAM AS EXTENDED MEMORY? (Y/N). I as-

It basically means that you would have the hard drive partitioned into three

the files on a particular partition. It is really no problem.

Yes, remapping the shadow ram as extended memory will effectively shut it off.
As for EMS -- a 286 can setup expanded memory page frames with a device
driver. The chipset (like NEAT) might need to have the parameters reset on
some machines, however..

Re motherboards -- most distributors of motherboards use "off-shore" stock.
These are fine, for the most part -- the one I would stay away from is a
DTK motherboard. I have found these to be incompatible with software and
hardware (mainly due to the BIOS).

DOS versions up to 3.3 would only allow a "logical" hard drive partition of
32 megabytes, maximum. This means that an 80 meg drive would need to be
"partitioned" as 32, 32 and 16 (or some other combination). You would then
have logical drive letters C, D and E. You could not serach the whole 80
meg drive without changing to the logical partitions (C,D,E) prior to the
search.

Starting with DOS 4.0, the 32 meg limit was lifted. This version allowed
partitioning very large drives. I suggest that you upgrade to Tandy's DOS 5.0
version.

Another little thing about partitions. JOEWHALEN pointed out once, in the
PC Sig, that partitions over 32 meg or under 16 meg use a minimum file size of
4K. Within the above range the minimum is just 1K. *I* know its true at the
lower end because I've got a 40Meg that was already partitioned at 32 and 8
when I bought the (used) computer, and the free space on the 8 meg side drops
4K every time I write a one line batch file :( This probably won't apply if
you upgrade your DOS but MISAL's size suggestions look perfect if you dont.

It should support a 50 Meg Hard drive. You need to use a program
called FDISK to set up the rest of the drive as a 20 Meg
partition, then FORMAT that partition.

Since I don't have the TL (or any of the 1000s with the ROM) I am
not sure which drive letter the new partition will get.
Hopefully someone else here will know, because you will need to

thinking that my 720K 3.5" is a 360K 5.25"! I fixed that problem by
using the DRIVER.SYS device driver.

I should point out that in order to use Norton's DISKTOOL that you need to
have a bootable floppy disk that has the DOS 5.0 system installed on it.
I had to format a floppy on a friends machine using the FORMAT /S switch.
Once this was done, I copied the DISKTOOL.EXE program off my friends
hard drive onto my floppy. Then I placed the floppy in my drive A: and
flipped the Big Red, typed "DISKTOOL" and proceeded.

Hope this helps! :)

I always understood that the heads are 'floating' over the platter on
a cushion of air that is created when the platter spins. I have read
articles that talk of the importance of having a current backup of your
hard drive (which I do) in case something bad happens. This something
bad that the article was referring to was a "brown-out," meaning a signi-
ficant decrease in voltage. This would cause the platter to lose some
of its speed and thus the cushion of air is lost. CRUNCH! The heads
lose their means of support and dig into your data! Maybe the author

     Modems
     From: FOOTLOVER To: ALL

I bought the 1200 baud internal modem that Radio Shack sells for the 1400HD.
Now here is my question: What is it about a modem that makes it strictly
1200 baud? Is it a chip? As far as I know, there are no internal modems
for my little Tandy that are faster than 1200. I know I could buy an ex-
ternal modem, but face it folks, this girl likes a challenge. Now DON'T
laugh at me but could I simply desolder the chip and replace it with a chip
that could make my same modem capable of 2400, 4800, 9600 or greater?
Even though I am "just" a lady, I am quite comfortable with a soldering
iron and I love that kind of work. Can it be done?

<JULIE>

P.S. For th
For Those of you that doubt me, remember those little Sinclair computer
kits that used to be sold? Well I built one and it worked the FIRST time I
plugged it in! HA!

I have a Star Micronics StarJet SJ-48. It is a clone of Canons BJ-10ex.
It's real little and cute and I love it. I have seen many ads in magazines
about saving money by buying what amounts to a hypodermic syringe filled with
ink for refilling ink-jet cartridges. Refilling seems to be a LOT less ex-
pensive than buying a new cartridge, but does it work? Has anyone ever tried
it? I wonder if the ink is really up to OEM spec?

The term you are looking for is "landing zone" (not address), Julie. This
"parking area" is simply the area on a drive where the armature can swing
the heads away from the tracks on the platters and lock it.

Unless you have an "old" MFM drive, you do not need to park the hard drive.
If one needed to park the hard drive on a laptop -- it would not be very
portable. You can tell if you hard drive head is "auto-parking" by the slight
"stepping" sound it makes at power-down.

Yes, the SL will support the 50 Meg drive, however, DOS 3.3 will not allow
a partition of more than 32 meg. Either you will have to divide the drive into
2 partitions or upgrade to dos 4.01 or 5.0 (NOTE: when you upgrade the dos, the
information on the ROM chip will not be able to be accessed! So if you use
deskMate, you will have to get the stand-alone version (ver. 3.05).

Yes, the MS DOS 5.0 version supports the larger partitions. But, no matter
which (Tandy or MS) if your hard drive is partitioned now -- you must
re-partition it and reformat it under the new DOS. Of course, this means that
you will need to back up all you current data.

Now, understand -- it is not *required* that you format the drive to its'
full capacity under 5.0. You could leave the partitions if you like. But,
I don't think this is why you wanted the new DOS <grin>.

The changes you'd have to make to the modem are extreme. It
would need a new bios, clocking, noise filtering, tone generation
and so on. Pretty much you'd just have the printed circuit board
left of the original materials (oh, and the RJ-11 type modular
connectors).

It's like trying to run a 33 MHz 386 chip on a motherboard
designed to run a 4.77 MHz 8088. You have to scrap everything
and start fresh.

I don't know if Panasonic made the 1400 or not, so I don't know
if their 2400 bps modems would work. Grid also makes Tandy
laptops.

All the Tandy programs have been moved to the CROSSFIRE section of the PC

SEA TANDY or SEA 1000 for Tandy 1000 stuff! As for the Tandy 1000 SX running

I haven't seen the TL in awhile, at least not as far as configuring goes,
but I seem to recall that FDISK will need to be run on C: and D:, but you
will end up with C and E drives--ROM should be D drive, and is easily ident-
ified as the drive showing 0 bytes free. Even if I remember incorrectly, as
I manage a Radio Shack, and models tend to blur a bit with time, you can ex-
pect a harmless error message if you pick the wrong drive. FDISK cannot
affect ROM.
********NOTE********** It is very IMPORTANT to realize that DOS version
5.0, (and probably 4.0 and up, too) will not recognize ROM. Before installing
the upgrade, run SETUPTL, and have the machine boot from disk, searching for
AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS on C: (normally on C:) If you do not, and the
machine is booting from ROM, it will now lock up. The only remedy will be for
you to power down, disconnect the data cable from the hard drive, and boot
from drive A: Run SETUPTL from your DOS disk(s), make the revision, power
down, reconnect the hard drive, and it should now boot up on DOS 5.0.
If you run deskmate, you should also copy any non-system files from ROM to
disk. DESK.COM (or perhaps DESK.EXE) is needed to load Deskmate. This file
was not included in the distribution disks, probably to discourage piracy, and
more importantly, because this file varies with each model and Deskmate cversion

Hopefully, this will be of help--if anyone has questions, I'll be glad to find
an answer to their questions.

Hate to be a spoil-sport, but RLL and ARLL have nothing what-so-ever to
do with the drive interface. The interfaces commonly used are:

        ST-506 and ST-412
        ESDI
        IDE
        SCSI

Add to that list the more common data-encoding methods:

        FM
        MFM
        NRZ

Add to the above two lists the common data-compression standards:

        None
        RLL
        ARLL
        ERLL

If you want to determine the interface used, just look at the cable. A drive
with one 34-pin and one 20-pin card-edge cables is either ST-506, ST-412
or ESDI. A drive with one 40-pin header connector is IDE. A drive with one
50-pin header connector is SCSI.
