 Hey Ben,
I did an interesting fix on my T100TX.. and it was quite simple. From
the "Old radioshack" days, I have in my coolection of old spare
parts, a "Stereo simulator." Has on in and 2 RCA out. Simple little box,
and on the 1000TX there is an audio out (or the headphone Jack worked
also) So I ran a cable out of the TX and into the simulator, then into the
AUX in on an old stereo the I have here in the office. Now all the kids
games talk in simulated stereo ( actually in simulated surround sound -
I have 4 speakers hanging!) and they love it. No cuttin orr splicing
involved. A simple Adllib, if I may......
Night.

Very elegantly done, Zeke (says Ben, nursing several soldering iron-singed
fingers). ;) My older 1000SX does have RCA audio (I hacked in volume control
anyway) out but the newer 386 definitely required a bit of old fashioned
sonic surgery.

   Chipe,

When you are in the setup program try hitting the spacebar to toggle the
option that you want instead of the enter key. In one of your previous
messages you said that Deskmate wouldn't see your hard drive. Did you mean
that you had no files listed in the list boxes? Make sure that you have a
line in your autoexec.bat file that looks something like:

  SET DMCONFIG=C:\DESKMATE

This tells Deskmate where to store and find your data files that it needs.

     HELP!!!!
     From: JANETTOO To: ALL

I have a 1000RL. I went on vacation last week, and when I returned,
something was wrong. Usually, when I turn the computer on, it automatically
goes to the Deskmate menu thing, but this time, it remained at the DOS C:
prompt. I typed "desk" which will automatically go to Deskmate from any
directory, but kept getting the message "bad command or file name" or
something like that. I looked at the autoconfig file and found that it began
with D: and then a whole string of commands. Now for one, I don't have a D
drive. I have a floppy (A) and a hard drive (C) and I've never done anything
to it to indicate a D drive. I turned the computer off when I left town and
when I turned it on, this is the way it was. After fiddling with it a bit, I
found that if I typed "D:desk" at the C: prompt, it would go to Deskmate and
everything works fine. But I never had to type that "D:" before and I don't
know why that started. To fix it, I changed the autoconfig file to begin
with "C:" and then the whole bunch of commands, but after I type the
"Prompt: Desk" command, I get the message "bad command or file name" again.

Does anyone know what the problem can be and more importantly, how to solve
it? It's really not a catastrophe because I can still get into the Deskmate
menus, but it aggravates me because I don't know why or how it happened.

Thanks in advance!!!

I don't know how it happened either, but you probably do have a pseudo D:
drive. Deskmate is probably loaded into ROM, which is given a drive
designation of D:. Run a DIR on drive D: and it should show you the
contents of your "ROM Drive". I know, that still doesn't tell you what
happened, only provides a little insight. You might check your autoexec.bat
file to see if your path statement has been altered. There should be a
statement similar to "PATH=D:\;C:\;C:\DOS" --no quotes. You can alter the
file with the edit command from the DOS prompt, ie. < DOS>:EDIT
C:\autoexec.bat >. I hope this helps some.

If you have a Tandy RL1000 then you surely have a D drive. That is where
the files that run Deskmate are hiding.
I have no idea what caused your computer to behave as it now is
but I just checked my autoexec.bat and I think you should have the following
lines:
       set dmconfig=c:\deskmate
       path=c:\;c:\dos;c:\deskmate

This is just a wild guess, but maybe you had a battery go bad.
Most PCs today have a small battery that keeps power going to the
CMOS (a type of memory - it holds your system settings).

Many of the little batteries recharge while the PC is on. I
don't know about the T1000RL. You could try running the setup
program (the user's guide should tell you how to do that) to tell
it how it should be setup.

     RE: HELP!!!! (Re: Msg 21642)
     From: DAIRYLADY To: JANETTOO

Janet,

There are a number of things to check, so I will list them step by step:

1. From the C: prompt, type DIR/P <Enter> and look for the following files
in
the list: AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS.

2. Type TYPE AUTOEXEC.BAT <Enter>. You should see the following lines as a
minimum: @echo off
         path=c:\;c:\dos;c:\desk
         prompt=$p$g
         set dmconfig=c:\desk
         desk

If anything is missing, you can fix that after you are finished checking
things.

3. Now type CD\DESK <Enter> (or CD\DESKMATE, if this is the name of the
directory for DeskMate files on the RL), and again type DIR/P <Enter>. Look
for the file DESK.BAT. If it is there, go on to the next step; if not, you
have found one problem, which we can fix in a minute.

4. Now go back to the C: prompt by typing CD\ <Enter> again.

5. Now type SETUPRL <Enter>. A screen will appear with some choices. Where
it says PRIMARY STARTUP DEVICE, select DISK. Where it says INITIAL START-UP
PROGRAM, select DESKMATE. Now press F1. That will save your settings and
exit back to DOS.

6. Now, if anything was missing from the AUTOEXEC.BAT file, or the DESK.BAT
file was missing from the DESKMATE directory, press F12 to get to the
Desktop, then open TEXT. When the screen appears, pull down the F2 Files
menu and select Open.. In the File to Open box, type C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT and
press Enter. The contents of the AUTOEXEC.BAT file will appear on the
screen. You may now edit it so all the lines in item 1 above are there and
in the proper order. If you don't need to make a new DESK.BAT file, you can
now press Esc, and answer Yes to Save Changes? If you need to make a new
DESK.BAT file, you should press F2 again, and select New. Answer Yes to Save
Changes? and you will then be at a fresh work screen. Type the following:
     @echo off
cd\deskmate\xxxx (the xxxx is the name of your optional data directory)
     d:desk.com
     cd\
Now press Esc, type C:\DESKMATE\DESK.BAT in the Save As.. filename box, and
press Enter.

7. When you get back to the Desktop, press Esc one more time to exit to DOS,
then press the red Reset button on the front of the CPU. This will reboot
the computer and all the changes you have made will go into effect. Now,
does it work right? I hope so.

                                        Sue.

Janet,

I'm glad it worked, and I'm glad I could be of help to somebody after all
the help I've gotten from people around here. (When I typed my reply, I kept
forgetting that later versions of DeskMate than I have - v3.00.00 - all use
DESKMATE where mine is DESK in files and directories, so I hope that wasn't
confusing you - apparently not, since it worked).

I learned about the DESK.BAT file the hard way when I crashed my hard disk
in late August. That file isn't on the original diskettes, because it wasn't
needed on the 1000 series computers that didn't have hard drives. When you
added a hard drive, Radio Shack would copy it into your DESKMATE directory,
and alter the AUTOEXEC.BAT file to call it, as part of the installation
process. If I were you, I'd copy it onto your original DeskMate diskette
and/or the backup copy.

While frustrating, some of my best learning has come from my biggest
mistakes!

                                        Sue.

P.S. From the Can-You-Believe-This?-Department: a friend of mine bought a
complete 1000RLX/HD-VGM441-DMP240 outfit on sale last spring and *hasn't
even taken it out of the box yet*!!!! Just keeps saying she is too busy! And
that she wants to "fix up the room" before she sets it up! I said, "What if

She said, "I guess I'll just have to pay for it." Oh, well...

With the Sensation, you should have Windows 3.1, and with 3.1 you should
have the DOS program MSD (Microsoft System Diagnostics). Run this program
from the DOS prompt. It will list the available IRQs and how the ones in
use are being used. I suspect you have an interrupt problem caused by the
pre-installed data/fax modem and/or sound board. You should be able to sort
out the interrupt conflicts and set jumpers on your various installed boards
to get everything sorted out. I hope this is detailed enough. I don't know
how experienced you are, so good luck and let us know how it turns out.

Stewart...

PS. An afterthought: The data/ fax modem in the Sensation is probably the
culprit. There may be a scanner interface on the card. I'm sure you
realize this card is not in one of the standard expansion slots, but
installed on the motherboard.

The TX only has room for 10" cards *inside* the case. Inside the

is for the FCC EMI standards so that the machine rates as class
B (for Home Use). The TX is very similar to the SX, which I
have. I can only use 10" cards in my SX due to the internal

new Tandy 4860 HD being on sale for $2299 with a catalog price of $3499.
That is one heckuva lot of savings off the normal price and wondered if
any of you knew about the 'puter.

The specs show that it has an i486DX running at 33MHz with a 60MB HD,
4MB of RAM and an 8K RAM cache. The HD is preloaded with MS-DOS 5.0
and Windows 3.1 so it is all ready to run. What I need to know, even
though the salesman reassured me, is if I can run an external VGA
display AND the LCD display at the same time. Also, I need to know
if there are 3rd party supplies of extra memory and modems for this
particular series of machines.

I might just pick it up tomorrow and see what works for me and, if it
is not satisfactory, take advantage of their 30 day return guarantee.
However, any response would be appreciated, if it might save me the

If it doesn't fit in the TL, it won't fit in the TX either. All of the

Boot from a floppy disk and remove the reference for ANSI.SYS and reboot
from the hard drive. A couple of things to check after he gets the system
working normally. . . make sure the line:

        DEVICE=C:\DOS\ANSI.SYS

is in the CONFIG.SYS file (not the AUTOEXEC.BAT file). If this is what
he did and it caused the computer to hang, check the ANSI.SYS file to
make sure it isn't corrupted. The easiest way to do this is to just copy
ANSI.SYS from the master DOS disks. Do not however that if he's using DOS 5,
the files on the DOS disks are compressed. To expand the ANSI.SYS file from
the floppy, type this:

        EXPAND A:ANSI.SY_ C:\DOS\ANSI.SYS

If none of this helps, something in the CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT file
is conflicting with it -- it is also remotely possible the file on the
master disks is corrupted.

Cheap.

Some peripherals and cards are also available.

Oh, IMPROTANT: Do NOT contact the store until AFTER Christmas.

The drives you have mentioned part number 25-1041 came from a Tandy 2000 system.

I have one of them myself left over from ripping a few apart. The drives are
Seagate drives in my cases..ST-225 MFM drives.. useable on most IBM compatibles.

The controller card sounds like one from an old early Tandy 1000.. I used to
have
an old Tandy catalog here with all the numbers of old equiptment in them but I
threw the whole mess away and kept the drives..the cases are good for an
external

The CM-1 monitor is not usable with CGA cards because of differences in
the frequency of the sync signals. As I recall, the Tandy 2000 uses a sync
signal set to a frequency somewhere between CGA and EGA. You might as

finding the serial port the mouse is on. Did you verify that the

mouse on COM3 or COM4.

I think you can force the port with /n - where n is the number of
the comm port. For COM1: it's: MOUSE /1

And for COM2: it's: MOUSE /2

What you need is a program that finds and verifies what you have
on your system (I'm sure there's such a program in the Database -
I'll take a look). That way you can verify that the Serial ports
are working

I think a SIMM is a SIMM as far as fitting the socket correctly, and the
make/manufacturer is irrelevant. What's ON the SIMM, of course, must match
the mother/expansion board specs. My Tandy 4033LX requires SIMMs that are
1MB(or 256KB) x 9 at 100 or 80ns. Your machine very likely requires similar
chips, though perhaps at a 70ns speed. Hope this is correct, and that

I recently bought a VGM-340 monitor and SVGA adaptor boerd from Radio Shack

Installing it was easy, and it seemed to work fine at first, but after a
while I found that some programs do not recognize it as vga, and other times
the programs will run, but the screen is all screwed up. Example: I go into
DESKMATE, do whatever I want to do, and return to DOS
But when I get back to DOS, the screen is garbage, unreadable, flashing, or
just plain blank.Other programs do similar, if not worse things. I have tried
moving the jumpers on the vga board, to no avail. The CTRL-ALT-DEL reboot
doesn't work either, it reboots, but the screen is not restored to normal.
If anyone has had similar problems, I would like to hear from them, I have a
ideas of my own on this, as follows;
1: running too hot. I installed a cooling fan, because some of the chips
on the vga board were getting VERY warm.
2: power supply not big enough. I have more 'extras' than Tandy recommends-
(2 floppys, harddrive, extra memory, smartclock, svga, second serial port)
3: EMI. maybe shielding the vga board would help?
4: Static electricity. This seems farfetched, but this acts so wierd, I guess
it's possible.
If you have any comments, I'd appreciate E-mail, as I don't check this board
very often. thank you. PETERD2

Don,

I'm not quite sure where to start answering your question. I have a
1000TL with a CD-ROM drive that I added later. There were some problems
initially, but I finally got them straightened out and it works OK. First of
all, did the computer come with the CD-ROM or was it added later? If it came
with the CD-ROM, it presumably would be hardware-compatible with the
computer, so we could look elsewhere for the problem. If it was added later,
what kind is it and is there a manual? Exactly what *is* the problem?

With regard to the software, there should be some drivers for the CD-ROM
itself, and also some support software just for the particular program.
There will also be some lines in the config.sys and autoexec.bat files that
are for the CD-ROM drive.

I am not an expert on this, but if you can provide more information and
it turns out to touch on an area I experienced with my own CD-ROM drive
installation, I'll be glad to share what I learned.

Was the computer running OK before you changed the SETUPTL2/A program?
Was there a problem you were trying to solve by changing the video memory?
If so, what kind of problem? Also, did you change both the jumper settings
and the video settings in SETUPTL2 at the same time? Without knowing more
details, I'd be inclined to change everything back to the original settings
and see if you can then boot up that way. Then you can work on your reasons
for making a change in the first place.

Another thing you might try is hitting one of the F-keys, possibly the
F-10 key as soon as you hear the beep when you boot up. Someone told me that
on certain Tandy models this will restore everything back to the original
Factory Default Settings.

                          Hope this helps,

                                 Mike

Sue,

Thanks for the response. The problem is that he cannot get sound from the
SBPRO on all of his games/programs. I think the drive came with the system and
it may be a Hitachi. If so, is this the type CD that will also read and play
audio CD's? Also, shou
ld the Compton's directory be on the HD? The computer was a gift and he may
not have the software or manuals, I don't know. Could you U/L your config &
autoexec's for comparrison?
I have noticed a "bad Command" comment in booting, but do not remember if it
refers to the CD or SBPRO.

Thanks,

Don

I still suspect file corruption.

Thanks - and you may have noted a problem I may run into in due course! But
right now the problem is loading mouse.com.
The file is in there, but
DOS says it can't find it. In the past, I found it gave that response
when the file was corrupted. That may be the case this time. Meanwhile,
waiting for Radio

Shack to get back to normal, I'll follow your further suggestion and
poke around in the Database

Don,

Not all games/programs are compatible with SBPRO. This is not uncommon.
You may also find a "switch" which will allow your friend to have the SBPRO
emulate ADLIB or others. Is there a menu program or special CD-ROM
interface or launcher?

In order for the CD-ROM drive to play audio cassettes, you'll need
another driver. Seems like I saw some here on Delphi. Any software store
will also have them.

Most CD-ROM programs are initiated from the harddrive and will have at
least an .EXE file in a directory somewhere. My machine came configured
with several of them in one directory but as I've installed new CD
applications the programs have automatically created directories for
themselves. Normally the only CD-ROM programs which require no files on the
harddrive are those which store only ASCII text and can be read by LIST or
an ASCII editor.

I hope this helps you to some degree.

Walt

You're right. It was a parameter setting in telix, which keeps the setting in
two different locations. The settingswere different in the two locations.

The error message you are getting is not from DOS but from MOUSE.COM. MOUSE.COM
is loading and it is looking for your mouse and not finding it. Are you sure
that
your mouse is on COM1? If you type "mouse" by itself it assumes COM1. Try "mouse

/2. Also, are you sure that your mouse is MICROSOFT compatible? If it is not
MOUSE.COM will not work.

     RE: (Re: Msg 21717)

Don,

I am not sure who makes the CD-ROM drive for Tandy, but it is some
Japanese company, possibly Hitachi. If we have the same kind, there is a
jack on the front of the drive labelled PHONES, and a pair of output jacks
on the back of the interface card for the drive. The easy way to listen to
audio CDs or to CD-ROM programs with sound is to plug earphones or a pair of
small amplified speakers into the PHONES jack on the front. In order to get
SB-Pro going for games on the CD-ROM, you need to connect the CD-ROM drive
to the SB-Pro card with a Y-cable, which should have come with SB-Pro. In
this case, plug the single end of the Y-cable into the LINE IN jack on the
back of SB-Pro, and the double end into the back of the CD-ROM controller.
(If a microphone is plugged into the SB-Pro card, take it out while the
CD-ROM is plugged in because they can't both be plugged in at the same
time). Plug a pair of amplified speakers into to AUDIO OUTPUT jack on the
back of SB-Pro. This should take care of getting sound from Compton's and
other CD-ROM programs. Disc-based games will only use SB if they are written
to recognize it's presence, and that should be automatic or taken care of
through the INSTALL program with the game.

Now, for audio CDs: There should be a directory on the hard drive called
\DISC or something like that. Look for a file called TCDP.EXE, which
presumably stands for Tandy Compact Disc Player <g>. Have a stereo headset
or amplified speakers plugged into the PHONES jack, load a disc, and type
TCDP. The "control panel" will come up on the screen. Start the disc
playing, press ESC, and go on to do something else with the computer while
listening to music!

With regard to the "bad command" message, just ignore it. I think it's
because of the LASTDRIVE=Z inserted into AUTOEXEC.BAT by the CD-ROM
installation process. It is kind of a generic command used to cover all
drive letter combinations a computer might have and still be sure to catch
the letter of the CD-ROM drive on bootup. He can look at AUTOEXEC.BAT and
see if that, indeed, is the command that's been used. BTW, the device drivers
are MTMCDD.SYS or MTMCDS.SYS (probably MTMCDD.SYS is the one used in his
system) in CONFIG.SYS, and MSCDEX.EXE in AUTOEXEC.BAT. The default directory
names where these files are located are \DEV and \BIN respectively.

I can't tell you if the directory for Compton's should reside on the hard
drive permanently because I don't have Compton's. But if he is logged onto
the CD-ROM drive, has the Compton's disc in the player, and types DIR, he
should definitely see the directory.

If all this checks out, and he can now play things as described, I don't
think he has a problem. A lack of manuals was just making things difficult
to figure out. :) If, OTOH, it still doesn't work, I'll send you my CONFIG
and AUTOEXECs for comparison, OK? (I am getting the impression that you are
not getting a firsthand look at his system, right?)

It is easy to start all these programs from the DeskMate "desktop" by
writing batch files, locating them in a directory for that purpose, and
defining a list box pointing to the directory using the F7 menu.

                                        Sue.
