Tandy computers not being able to do certain things. People bash Tandy
computers for various reasons. From what I have heard; most of the
of the time they are trying to get their computer to do something it can't do
without extensive changes.......
I don't have a 47 foot boat, though, I sure wish I did.....
Anyway, my message was meant tongue-in-cheek and as a point to ponder....

I use Telix, will try to help: adding linefeeds may be correctable on the
terminal option menu. First load Telix, then do "alt O" and then scroll down
to terminal options, letter F. There is a line feed after carriage return,
on or off. try changing it. As to the situation of everything scrolling by
too fast, doesn't your Tandy (assume you have a Tandy) keyboard h a
"hold" button somewhere? I have a 1000SX and it is just to the right of
the enter key. An alternative while on line, would be to do an "alt B"
which allows you to scroll back. You can set how much of a buffer by
modifying it on the alt O process. I don't know what the default buffer is,
but mine is set at 4K, more than enough I would think. Hope this helps

You might want to consider trying DR DOS 6 anyway. By now, you may know that
GeoWorks Pro completely supports TaskMax, and there's a DR DOS fix/utility
upgrade which will allow cut/paste between dos apps and GeoWorks. GeoWorks does
not "shut down" under th

As far as I remember, Deskmate 3.3 needed the rom chip to start up... there is
not executable file in the distribution diskettes!!!
Regular Dos 5.0 cannot "see" the D: rom drive, hence, Deskmate will not
start-up! Tandy was supposed to be developing it's own version of DOS 5.0.

DeskMate 3.5 has an executable file AND *does not* operate off the 3.3 ROM. I
understand a limited production run of 3.5 ROM chips was made.

1. Copied Mouse.Com and Mouse.Sys from my original DOS 3.3 disk into my C:\

2. Added the following to my config.sys file:

DEVICE=C:\MOUSE.SYS

I have found that with the mouse driver loaded like this my mouse works in
every piece of software that supports a mouse. You may also further need to
tell Windows where to look for your mouse, as well.

     From: VINCEGORDON To: NEAL1530

          Neil,

I also run a 1000 TL/2 and have asked the same question. My
          setup has 1-3 1/2 720K, 1-5 1/4 320K floppies and 1-20 meg
          Smartcard.

I called Tandy support services in Fort Worth, Tx and was
told that I could not add additional Smartcard or hard drive
in my existing set up for two major reasons:

                    A) Not enough power requirements

                    B) Not enough physical space in housing to locate
device under existing setup. If I wanted to
drop one floppy (5 1/4) an additional smartcard
could be installed, but not recommended. They
said second smartcard could cause other
problems, of which they did not explain.

They only recommended swapping 20 meg for 40 meg Smartcard,
which would double hard drive space.

If what I have found out from other messages this forum and
PC forum and information in PCM magazine on "THE SLOT BOX"
from DCI Industries, it seems possible to ad up to 210 meg
hard drive plus a host of other nice expansion items for use
          with many 1000 series Tandys.

In the Dec 91 issue of PCM was a write up on "THE SLOT BOX",
pages 24 & 25 plus ads thru out the issue. The one they did
the review on was setup for 1000 TL/2, "Maxed out" with all
the goodies (extras :-) ). The only problem I see is the
extras are not cheap :-(. For the $$$'s needed could
probably buy newer higher speed system for less bucks and
have what I would want. But as an alternative "THE SLOT BOX"
will probably be the answer for many Tandy 1000 series
          owners.

If you find another way to add additional hard drive space
in the existing cpu setup, keep me in mind. My next addition
will be to upgrade from CGA :-( to SVGA, hopefully something
          similar to your setup.

When I brought up the issue of running two internal harddrives in my TL/2
almost a year ago, there was not support to be had... no onewanted to take
responsibility for it, including Tandy, which cited possible power limitations.
At any rate, this is what t
he December 1991 PCM Magazine says, in response to a letter on the very same
subject:

1. The IDE controller in the TL/2 can support two separate drives, both
connected on the same cable, in "daisy-chain" fashion.

2. It mentions that the floppy drive cable is set up this way.

3. "Daisy-chaining" lets signals flow in "serially," from the controller to one
disk, then to the other.

I'm not sure what the correct configuration for a serial connection is:

My two floppy drives are set up like this:

[A]Drive-----------------[Controller Socket]-------------[B]Drive

If I were going to hookup two harddrives, "common sense" would have me hook
theem up like this:

[Controller Socket]---------40mb Drive--------------20mb Drive

If I followed my floppy setup, it would look like this:

40mb-----------------[Controller Socket]------------20mb Drive

Maybe both would work; I don't know.

You mentioned you have a hard "card." There are differences between cards and
drives... I've been told you can't mix a card with a drive, and maybe there are
still power concerns in running two "cards," or maybe there is still a power
concern on Tandy's pa
rt, period.

The PCM response does mentions that they found out not all drives sold by Tandy
can operate in a master/slave relationship. Both of mine are from Western
Digital, so they would either work or wouldn't work.

From this point, it all still seems like an experiment. I wouldn't really be
able to afford major repairs right now, but at the same am hankering on
scooting on down to Radio Shack and buying some cable! <grin>

Anyone else have any thoughts on this.... *please* jump in!

Consider: With a 40mb and 20mb you hav 60mb... using something like SuperStor,
you have up to 120mb. Sounds mighty interesting to me!

Neal :)

I have an ancient system. It includes a tandy plus board modem.
The printers are not hooked up with tandy cables. I have not had
any printer problems, and did not have this problem with the 300
baud modem. I have no problems with the Daisy wheel and modem
working in tandom. I have no problem with the modem if I turn the
Dot matrix on after the computer.. The modem problem occurs only
when the DMP is turned on before the computer. In this case, the
modem looks at me, like an ugly duckling, and won't respond to
any commands. If I run modem doctor, (when I turn the printer on
first) it says the the uart apears correct, but that I have an
incompatable modem. (otherwise modem doctor likes my modem). Now
that I have found what causes the problem, I can work around it,
but it does seem strange to me.

Yes there are problems. Anybody with a 286 Express Card may not be able to
use the slot box. DCS says the 286 Card causes problems and they haven't
been able to fix it because the problem happens randomly and is not
isolated to a specific model/lot of the 286 card of which there were several
versions made which Tandy sold.

Thanks for the information. On the the T1000SX we have, it
probably wouldn't be very time effective to use the Task Swapper
anyway, it has only 640K of RAM and a very, very slow 30 meg hard
drive. Might as well save and quit, then boot the other program!

I can Task Swap on the T3000NL the I usually use. But again, the
usefulness is limited, it is pretty slow. (In fact the DOSSHELL
is pretty slow any way I look at it!).

Are you saying that the slot box doesn't work if you have a 286 card in it,
or that it doesn't work if you have the card in your Tandy? Does it work
on the 1000TX or 1000TL's? They have the 286 processor! Is it the board or

Help! I recently gave my 1000TL/2 to my daugher, who lives across town.

tried to print, nothing happened, No printing. I ran the self test on the

printer makes the mormal noise. On a print scrn the cursor moves as it
should and when trying to print from deskmate or other prgm . The screen

I assumed that the DMP was hooked to the TL/2 before. If this is an
incorrect assumption -- then yes, the cable could be the problem. A
"standrad" parallel printer cable will not work on the older DMP printers.

The older DMP's use Centronics pin # 33 as an 'INIT' line, and many
'standard' DB-25 to Centronics cables tie that line to ground, putting the
printer in a permanent INIT state.

DOn't quote me on any of this, but I'll give this a shot. If the ST225 is a IDE
drive you need to hook it up to the interface
of the SL/2 motherboard or use a special controler from Western-Digital or DCS.
I konw the TL/2 had an IDE interface on the motherboard, and it was the only
upgrade from the TL, I think the same applies
to the SL series. If the drive isn't a IDE drive, I have no idea if it will
work or not with the IDE interface on the moterboard.
Check the drive, is it a ST225A? Also, is it a card drive, if not, describe the
interface card. Finally, who did you buy it from? Am I correct in stateing it's
a 225Meg drive? Best of luck, mabey someone else can be of more help than I've
been. Anyone?

You have an echo problem, on setup in your telecommunications program select
Echo, echo on, echo - yes, or something to that effect.
If that doesn't work, do the same under your profile on Delphi, under the using
delphi menu. If you get really desprete, and this message doesn't help, call
delphi.
Oh, one other thing, did you hit the Backspace in Tymnet? If you did, your echo

I only payed $69.00 for it and it was brand new, still in the box and sealed.
I figured that I would have to buy a new controller board for it to hook it to

een several adds in the shopper for MFM controllers for the SL/2 and I had
figured on ordering one after checking here. The same place that sold me the
ST-225 also sold me 2 ST-225N external drives for $79.00 each. They were
originally for Apples but I h
ave hooked them up at work to one of our systems that has a SCSI controller
and the work fine. Will just have to low level format them when I can afford
the SCSI controller for my other system. These will be going on my 386 for a

I figured the enclosures were worth $79.00 when I brought them.

using the 5150 board in the original TL and the only way to loadhi on it is
to get a memory manager like QRAM to turn some of that EMS into UMB memory.
As it is, the 5150 board is not LIM 4.0 hardware compatible so it's not the
best buy in my book. I myself am looking into finding a different EMS board
for my TL that is both Soft & Hardware LIM 4.0 compatible. If you're determined
to use the 5150 board, run out and get yourself a copy of QRAM at your
local software store. It'll give you a maximum of 64K UMB (Upper Memory Block)
memory into which you can load maybe 4 TSR's HI. Chat at ya later...Jax...

difference cuz I don't myself. I'm just repeating what little I've been told.
I still haven't figured out why the extra 128K on my TL can't be used for

Hmmm... are you using your video memory as extra memory? If so, is it degrading
video performance?

I don't know a thing about ms dos 5.0... I'm using DR dos 6.0 on a TL/2 with
640k. Amazingly, it all works, including TaskMAX, the task switcher. DRI
advised me to forget about adding the extra 128k and just go for the good stuff.

I believe that in order for memory to be UMB, XMS, etc. It must have an address
of A20? Tandy only supports memory addressing up to A19, or so I'm told. I
just wonder if there is a way to fool the TL into recognizing that memory as
upper memory. Make's

If it is the GUI version (3.01 or something like that) and not
the text based DESKMATE II (that I got on my T1000SX) then the
way to download is the Control-C (for Command mode) and select
the OPTIONS box you'll see the transfer commands listed (upload

I am remembering this off the top of my head . . . I haven't had
Deskmate (either version) loaded on my computer for several

I've heard that the phone system is "going digital." I thought it al-

need modems--just a direct connection to the phone line from the computer,
and you should be able to transmit text or graphics at whatever speed
your computer is capable of using. Think of that!

About parts of messages missing..... could be line noise. A single character
(I forget which character) can erase the line currently in the line buffer,
although you can still see it on your screen. Before I press [control] Z, I

     From: DLINDERMAN To: GOGEBIC

Glad to see you are aware of the excellent article in Sept 90 PCM. I would
think the Packard bell monitor would work fine. Just be sure to read the
fine print on the "dot pitch" . Just repeating what I have read, I guess
anything higher than .31 is to be avoided. Some likelihood that if the
ad copy does not specify, it probably is worse than .31, but check it out
to be sure. I bought a CTX multisync monitor and svga card from DCS and
have been very pleased with it. I was worried at first, when I was installing
the graphics board, as you really have to carefully push it into the slot.
I think I am stating this correctly....the card they supplied was a 16/8
bit card and as such has some of it's connectors not plugging into anything
on my 1000SX.

And oh yes, the vga fix that the same PCM article mentions---had to be done
in my instance. After installing the vga board and the new monitor, some
of the programs would not recognize the card. Some programs you can enter
something "extra, like vga right after the executable filename". Otherwise
what was happening with me on some programs, was that the program would bail
out to the dos prompt or leave me staring at a black screen. just use a
word processor to type in the basic commands provided, run the program which
creates a COM file that you will want to put in your autoexec.bat file,
probably on the first line or two, and you will not have any problems with
programs not recognizing that you have a vga card installed.

hope this helps Regards, Dave

     hx serial card problem
     From: BRADSNYDER To: ALL

OK, I just got an rs232 card for my T1000HX from DCS. It is a tiny RS232 card
with an adapter cable so that it fits the HX. Jumpers are set for COM1 and
IRQ4. I plug it into the computer and my Zoom Hayes compatable modem. So far,
so good.

Now, how do I tell the Deskmate Telcom program that I don't have a touch tone
line? The modem tries to use tones instead of pulses, and I can't find an
option to change the dial command anywhere.

Problem #2: I figure hey, I'll just go into terminal mode and enter the AT
command to dial using pulses from the keyboard. That works great. The modem
dials, and when I get a carrier the status line on the screen changes from "off
line" to "on line". I figure this is going great. The only problem is that
nothing appears on the screen. I can send character to the modem, but anything
comming back is not printed on the screen. I can tell by the RD light on the
modem that somthing is being sent to me, but nothing on the screen. I even put
an RS232 mini tester on the line right next to the serial card to see if the
signal is getting back to the computer. It is. Could I have a bad serial card,
or am I doing something wrong with Telcom? Please don't tell me to download
another Telcom! I can't, yet. Oh yes, I normally use the modem with a different
computer (am using it now) and it works fine.

I take it that the computer you are currently using either isn't
PC compatible or uses a different floppy type from the HX. There
is a program called mini-tel (or something like that) that is a
hex dump, and a basic program for converting it to a *.com. You
might as a last resort download those (I forget which database
they are in - now - leave another post if you decide to use the
last resort and I'll find them) as ASCII text - then you would
type them in on the HX and run the basic program. A lot of work.

Telecom should have an option (in the opening screen unless your
version of Telecom is different from the one I used) box where
you can tell it you have a pulse mode line. Even the ancient
Deskmate II telecom could set that! I may have to dig out my
deskmate disks to see where to set that option. Should be the
same menu you used to set the phone number.

No, the computer that I use now isn't PC compatable, or I would download
a different term program with it. I'm not ready yet to try typing in that
program that you were talking about, sounds like too much work! For now I am
still tinkering around with Deskmate.

To verify that I have a good RS232 card, I tried it on our Zenith PC at work,
(removed the HX adapter first) and the card works fine, up to 9600 bps.

I am using the ancient Deskmate II telcom, as it's all that came with the
computer when I bought it. I still cannot find any option to change how the
number is dialed. To fool the program into dialing pulse, I entered the
following number: 1P8210469. That caused the first digit (1) to be dialed as a
tone, which my phone co. ignored, and then the (P) switches the modem to pulse
dialing. Now that works, but the term program still does not show any
characters on the screen, or even save them into the buffer. (I turned the
buffer on to see what would happen - it is blank.)

Do you (or anyone) know why the telcom program refuses to display any
characters received by the RS232 card. I tried switching the IRQ from 4 to 3,
but everything worked just the same. I don't have the memory expansion card,
could that have anything to do with it? (There is no DMA chip in the HX, but
there is one on a HX memory expansion.)

Thanks for your help!

That is the DESKMATE that came with my 1000SX. Deskmate II, that
is. I'll have to dig out my manuals and floppies. I was mostly
disappointed with it because it had not terminal emulation, and
was clumsy to use (I have to send a break sequence to alert the
system when I want some things done ... (the system at work) and
it was not easy to do!).

I'll be glad to help. I should be able to come up with something
by tomorrow (maybe). I don't remember if it had XMODEM, so you
may end up having to download those programs (using Deskmate
Telecom) as ASCII files, and hope they don't have any errors!

I'll get back to you.

BTW - good trick, imbedding that P that way! :)

     From: VINCEGORDON To: MISAL

Mike,

I was reading one of the question and reply columns in a past issue
of PCM magazine and there was a reference to a 286 Express Board.

Could you educate me as to what the use of this type board does?

I get the feeling that it has to do with the performance of ones
system but to what degree. Is is used in older machines to increase
the speed ie 80888 or like machine? Would it be of use in a 1000

The @*^ Express card referred to was made by PC TECHNOLOGIES ACCELERATION
(now defunct) and was designed for the TANDY 1000/A/SX series of computers.
It was an accelerator card with an 8 MHz80286 chip and an 8K cache built in
the card. I currently use one in my EX and has worked for over 4 yrs I think.
The manual only refers to those three models of Tandy's for installation so
I'm not sure it would work in your TL/2. Isn't the TL/2 '286 based anyhow?
I get a Norton SI rating of 6.9 with the cache active (slow by today's stan-

amenities, like 100Meg drive, 1024x726 non-interlaced

Finally, the ad's in you paper sound right, add on 100 meg drive, video, a 1.44

It wouldn't do you a bit of good since your TL/2 is already a 286 based PC.
It was meant for the older 1000's such as the 1000(A) & SX to give them the
added speed of a 286 CPU over the 8088 that was in them.

One thing Joel -- some monitor manufacturers have begun measuring the

dot-pitch of the monitor is .21?

My personal opinion -- stay away from Packard Bell.

The Paradise VGA card needs to be 8 bit and should have at least 512K of
memory onboard. This is a "standard" model -- so look for the best price.

(Your TX only has 8 bit expansion slots, as I recall. If this is wrong, opt
for the 16 bit card with 512K)

     From: BRADSNYDER To: SANDLINJ

John, the Deskmate Telcom does have ASCII and Xmodem transfers, but even ASCII
is no good to me because the program (or hardware) refuses to receive any
characters from the RS232 port.

I've called DCS about this problem, and they are very helpful, but have no
answers about why this is happening, especially since I can take the RS232 card
and modem and plug it into a different computer and it all works. But then I'm
not running Deskmate on that system. So their suggestion is to try a different
Telcom program. They also mentioned something about the expansion bus on the HX
not being "middle of the road IBM compatable". Something about buffering or
timing. They suggested that maybe I have a marginal RS232 card, but first to
try another program.

I have a friend who has a nice shiny new 2500 model tandy, so I'm going to go
to his place tomorrow and download a telcom program from here. Do you have any
suggestons? If the other telcom doesn't work, I'll have to send the card back
to DCS. I still don't understand why it wouldn't work with Deskmate though.
Unless Deskmate was designed to work with Tandy's internal modem?

Thanks. . . . . . . . Brad

If your version of Deskmat has XModem it is different from what
came with my SX. Yes, try another telecom program - seems to me
that the Telix program is small enough to run from a floppy,
unless the HX has a hard drive on it, then I think the QModem 4.5
test drive version would be a good choice ('cause it's Freeware).

I use Procomm Plus v. 2.01 and love it. But I've used the
Procomm versions since 2.4 (shareware) and stuck with what I knew
best. I've tried QModem, Telix and GTPowerComm. I don't recall
having tried Telemate, but I've heard good things about it.

Well, I see you took my advice . . . before I gave it! <Grin>

Good to see the RS-232 works! Looks like Deskmate was looking at
the wrong port or something <?> since the Telix program works
just fine.

BTW, I pulled out the disks for Deskmate II. I can't use it on
my T3000! It requires the old Tandy 1000 Keyboard (not the new
extended keyboard they use now). I looked in the manual for the
old Deskmate. It doesn't really even have a ASCII download, per
se, you have to Capture the text as it scrolls down the screen,
and that is your download!

<< Fortunately, when I bought my first modem, it had a Freeware
comm package (PC-Talk III, I believe) bundled with it. I used
that to download Telix, QModem and Procomm. So I didn't have to
deal with Deskmate very much - just enough to decide it wasn't
worth the effort! >>

Yeah, that's where the after-market people are a real help to the Tandy
1000 owner. Since the machine does have all non-standard connections,
the best hope is to find someone like DCS who makes a business of filling
the need for dependable add-ons for it. When I was still using the CoCo
with OS9, I toyed with the idea of upgrading RAM to the 1 Meg limit it
had at the time. Someone out in after-market country was manufacturing
a board that, with proper jumpers and software, would give 1 Meg of RAM
to the machine--but with so little commercial software available in OS9,a
   it hardly merited the expense.
I have an HX connector in my junkbox. At the time I ordered it, I was
going to go into some experiments with interfacing; that's been put on

Yes, I agree with you about Deskmate being
a good menu program. I have a friend with
a 2500/sx20 and everything works great on
there, but the telecom program is very basic.
He is now switching to Telix. Unfortunately,
I don't have a hard drive. Just the basic
HX with it's single disk drive. I bought
it for $75.00 and added a $50.00 serial
card just so I could get on-line and play
around with a PC compatable.

The problems are sporadic, Art. The quality of the components vary -- you may
never see a problem. From what I have heard -- it is certain "lots" that
cause problems. Chances are good that if you have not had a problem, you
won't.

How much memory do you have on your HX? Until you get a hard drive, I would
put the DEskmate away. I think that it is more trouble swapping disks all
of the time than it is worth. Mary

I have a friend that just got an old 2000... He cannot get it to work
on anything other than MS-DOS 2.11.02.
Will this computer work under the higher versions?

I have heard Tandy clones need a special Tandy version of MS-DOS. Would
he need to get such a version for it to work.
Niether mydelf nor my friend has much knowledge of the MS-DOS world, so
any responses should be simple so's us dummies will understand.

help.

The T2000 was not an "IBM compatible" -- the Tandy DOS will have to do, I am
afraid.

No need to whisper Mike. Although I have never had a problem with my PB
when I bought my newest monitor I got a Panasonic 1381. I would be interested
in what may be lurking around in there as it is still only a few months old.

As home-computing is more of a hobby than anything for me, I need to consider
what is available for a hobbyist budget rather than a business deduction.
So far Packard Bell and Panasonic have made the cut for features per dollar.

For right now I have put away Deskmate. I am gradually having some luck getting
different programs running. There is only 256K in the HX, which I am quickly
finding out, can be somewhat limiting.
