As a rule, the hard drives are formatted when they arrive (especially an IDE

have no problem doing this for you.

Most likely they are 150 ns but they may be 120 ns. Most places don't even
sell 150 ns DRAM chips anymore. In fact they probably start at 100ns.
These chips will work fine in your TX if you're looking to add more memory.
Also on the chips themselves inside your computer there will be a number
like 41256-xx where xx will equal 15 for 150ns, 12 for 120ns, 10 for 100ns,
80 for 80ns etc. Your memory chips are located right in front of the
expansion slots.

The "OFFICIAL" word from tandy when DOS 5.0 first came out was no difference
except tandy included a mouse driver. There was no mention of graphics
changes or rom workarounds. In fact I even asked whether Tandy would be
supporting the TGA video capabilites through DOS 5.0 or QBASIC and they said
no. They said all we are doing is reselling the MS version with no changes.
This of course messed up a lot of people with DOS and DESKMATE in ROM as you
have seen throughout the forum for the last year or so. Tandy kind of
neglected to tell people their ROM drive would be unavailable using DOS 5.0

     NEW EMS/XTENDED MEMORY BD
     From: GLENTZ To: ALL

GOOD/BAD news story. A company called Acculogic has released a new memory
board that is really neat. It is called the RAMpAT!-Plus and costs around
$140(OK) from suppliers such as JDR Microdevices or BIZMART. It is a HALF
LENGTH 8/16 bit board that can hold from 2-16MB of ram via 1 or 4MB 80ns
SIMM modules. The board will work in 8088/80286/386 etc. If the board is
installed in an 8088 system or in an 8 bit slot in 80x86 systems it will
automatically configure all its memory as expanded. The board is hardware
LIM 4.0 for expanded memory. If the board is installed in a 16 bit slot the
memory can be configured as extended, expanded or both.

I have a 1000SX with VGA, harddrive, 286 express card and serial/parallel
card. When I first saw the advertisements for the board I thought I died
and went to heaven. So I called the company and they said yes it should
work in your system. They said they had tested it in a 1000TX (yes TX) and
it worked fine. So I figured it should work for me. Needless to say I
couldn't get it to work with my system even after extensive phone
conversations with Acculogic. It seems the expanded memory manager(licensed
from Quadtel) couldn't access the memory correctly and my system hung every
time during boot up. The board DID WORK FINE IN AN IBM XT that I had access
to. I was also able to test it in a stock 1000TX, which they said was ok,
but I couldn't get it to work in there either. The TX had the extra 128k
video memory and when I disabled it the TX behaved the same as my SX.
HOWEVER when the 128K was enabled the Memory Manager found the board and
the memory but all 2MB had supposed parity errors and you could tell the the
onboard video was messed up also. I even put in parameters that were
supposed to keep the memory manager from playing around in the normal video
memory address's but it didn't help. I told Acculogic about this and the
only thing they could say was their TX may have had a VGA card in it and
maybe that's why it worked. They think there is a timing mismatch between
the board and the computer. I think there is sometype of conflict between
the memory manager, EMS board and the onboard video controller even though
it is supposedly disabled with the addition of a video card(ie VGA card)
which I have.

In Summary, The board is great idea since it will work in any style system,
uses standard SIMM modules, hardware LIM 4.0 compatible etc. The only
problem is I couldn't get it to work in a TX or SX.

Maybe if ALL you other T1000 series owners who want a very flexible and
much better EMS board at the same price as the MICROMAINFRAME 5150 board
CALL ACCULOGIC at 1-800-234-7811, 1-714-454-2441, 1-714-454-8527(FAX) or
1-714-454-8124(BBS). Plead and beg with them to come up with a fix for us
T1000 series owners who want the best for their system without having to
spend an extra $300 for the DCS expansion box just to be able to use full
length cards etc.

If anyone has ideas or comments I would welcome them and maybe ACCULOGIC
would too. ASK for Curt(sic) in tech support at ACCULOGIC. I hope we can
convince them to look into the compatibility problem and solve it.

Hi Greg! I sneaked a peek into my little Tandy tonight and looked at my
cabling for my hard drive. My drive is in my 1400HD.
It is Alps Electric model DRPO2OA1OC. As I looked, I oriented my machine
so that the FRONT of the drive faced ME. At the rear, I saw two connectors.
The one on the left was a twelve pin connector. It was NOT a ribbon cable.
It was just twelve wires in a bunch of different colors. On the right side
was a twenty-six pin ribbon cable. I noticed very quickly that this wiring
configuration doesn't match any of the ones you mentioned. What does this
tell you? (besides the fact that Tandy is pretty proprietary)

Can you tell anything about my drive by this info?

     DESKMCRASH
     From: PETEW To: ALL

Just experienced a bad "crash" involving Tandy's "DESKMATE"
Graphic User Interface. I was adding some files to my DM
Directory when I suddenly lost the "shell" around which
everything operates.
On my Tandy 1000TL2 this "Shell" comes from a ROM which
is embedded on my hard drive in partition "D". This partition
is write protected. When I tried to call up DESKMATE using
either F-12 or the DOS Command "DESK", I got a blank screen
except for one short line, and the computer hung, locking
out the keyboard.
For me this is serious, because I have my checking account
on QUICKEN under DM, and all of my names and addresses are
stored there too.

I tried virtually every remedy I could think of to get
my DM shell back with no avail - and I am an experienced
user. So today I went to the local RAdio Shack and bought
a Standalone DESKMATE package, Version 3.02 I think. And
I was told by the salesman that DESKMATE will not run
under DOS 5.0 (which I was using!). I still bought it
for $49.95 because I need the portability to use it on
other computers, but apparently DOS 5.0 was the problem.

Is TANDY aware of this, and have they made it know to
their computer users?

The fact that deskmate won't run under DOS 5 is new to me - PLEASE don't tell
that to my computer!!!! I've been using Deskmate as the main shell on my
computer for about 2 years now first under DOS 4.01 and as soon as DOS 5 came
out under it. The problem with the Tandy computer's not running deskmate under
DOS 5 is that DOS 5 does not recognize the ROM chip that the Deskmate shell is
on... therefore deskmate won't start up (the F-12 Key doesn't work with it
either). However, you can use deskmate just like any other computer user who
doesn't have DOS or Deskmate on ROM, but does have it on the bootable hard
drive! One thing you can try is when you are at the C:\ prompt, change to the
Directory with Quicken in it and just start the quicken program (this should
work even if it is a Quicken for Deskmate program). Mary

I can only relate experience from DR DOS 6.0's taskswitching feature, but it
may have some relevance. On this system, it is usually recommended that one
have about 500k for each task one wants to taskswitch, so... how much memory do
you have?

Hi,
My Tandy RGB Color Monitor CM-5 is not giving me any colors most of the

Sometimes it even turns a bad shade of green or a light blue. At that time, I
can't read the screen. Sometimes tapping the side of the monitor helps. Also,
heat could be a problem cause turning monitor and coming back always works.

I paid the going rate at my local RS store. I think their units over the past
year have been priced competitively. I'm sure an off-brand or lesser-known
brand would have been more cost-effective on the front end, but I wasn't
interested in the prospects of
being left with a P.O. box number for back-end support. I'm going to be
running the unit with an NEC MultiSync 2A monitor. I'll be dabbling with
Windows, which comes installed, but my primary software is GeoWorks and
WordPerfect. I don't know whether I'll
stay with the loaded MS-DOS 5.0 or load DR DOS 6.0, which is what my 1000 TL/2
is currently running under.

Dos versions (meaning Tandy versions of Dos) which recognize the rom register
it as the D: drive. Any other hd partitions would jump to E:, etc.

Mary,
Tandy had it's own section in the IBM PC compatibles SIG which was
shut down due to the lack of files uploaded to it. It wasn't active enough
to keep open so all the files in it were moved to the CROSSFIRE topic in the
Database. If you wish to locate Tandy Specific Software, that's the Database
where it will be located in. Any and all future uploads which are Tandy
Specific will also likely be moved there too, once they've spent their 1st
month online in the new arrivals Database.

I'm apologizing in advance folks, but I'm afraid that I'm about to become the

from my lowly 1000SL: from 8088 to 486SX, from 640K RAM to 4meg, from DeskMate
to Windows, from MS-DOS 3.3 to 5.0, and to top it off I paid to ZD~ have all
this trouble. First thing I gotta do is take out the second 360K floppy drive
from my SL and install it in my SX (so I can read all the disks I presently
have) and transfer the mo
dem from the old machine to the new one. I hope any screw-ups are
covered by the warranty. I already got a new printer cable to connect it to my

You probably would not be able to boot from a high density floppy. As far as I
know the TL2 can only be set to start from drive a or drive c, and a high
density floppy drive with a separate controller would probably be drive e,
depending on how your hard d
rive is set up. Of course, the 720 k 3.5 floppy drive that came with the
computer would still be hooked up and you could boot from that.

around! Your new computer shouldn't have any trouble reading those diskettes!
The only trouble may be reading the 360's FORMATTED on the new machine by the
older Tandy 1000. The high density drives should read & write to those 360's
formatted on the 1000 without any trouble, but the 1000 may not be able to

Pete:

DeskMate 3.05 (the PC-compatibles version) works with practically all
MS-DOS compatibles and with DOS 3.30 and later (including DOS 4 and DOS 5).
It seems many Radio Shack employees are full of hot air (not all, of course).
The problem you run into is that the DOS included with Tandy 1000s (the RL,
SL and TL series) are specially designed to boot and recognize the ROM drive.
When you install any other version of DOS, you loose the ROM drive - and when
the ROM drive goes, so does DeskMate. This is because the bundled version of
DeskMate is also specially designed to run from the ROM drive.

The solution is as simple as upgrading to DeskMate 3.05 when you move to DOS 5.
I've been using DOS 5 and DeskMate 3.05 on my Tandy 1000 TX at home and on
the Tandy 4033 LX at work for the last year (or more) and it works fine.

Bill:

Do you understand how the ROM BIOS works? Basically the ROM BIOS is all of
the low-level code required to boot the computer and perform I/O burned into
a ROM chip. If you add a VGA card, it includes a ROM that has all of the video
routines burned into it.

When Tandy designed the RL, SL and TL, it burned the DeskMate and DOS kernel
into another ROM and included that ROM on the motherboard. Also included in
that ROM are the code for RESTART.COM, AUTOMEM.COM, and a few others. Tandy
then created a directory to point to these files in the ROM and stored the
directory in battery-backed memory. What you see when you do a directory of
drive D: (the ROM) are the embedded files - this is about a third of the
entire ROM - you don't see the other two thirds.

From a 386DX you can actually upgrade the processor to a 486, and from there
eventually to a 586 (allegedly). A 386SX is 32-bit internal and 16-bit external.

A 386DX, 486SX, 486DX, or the yet to be released 586 (or P5) and 686 (or P6)
are all 32-bit external and therefore interchangeable.

FYI, in the May issue of PC World there is an article which starts,
" Cyrix reportedly plans an announcement in April of an equivalent to the
486SX processor that will plug into 386SX sockets." As you may already know
Cyrix currently makes math co-processors compatible with Intel's models. So
you will be able to upgrade a 386SX to a 486Sx with a simple chip swap in
the near future.

However, a person computing at home, whether for business or personal reasons,

(i.e. 4000LX, 4025, 4033, etc.) Also, if you mean that a 386DX can be upgraded

It appears that I may have been misinformed (by RS sales personnel) concerning
the availability of a Tandy 386DX. The upgrading from a 386DX to a 486, while
not a simple chip swap, is a simple board addition. Zeos and several other
companies are selling upgradable systems, but you gotta start at bottom with a
386DX, no chance of upgrading from SX. I hate it when I give out information and

indeed, have a 286 in it.
Thing is, that 286 chip is no bargain, either. I was going to drop a bit of
money on one, but finally have decided to wait and go 386DX--prices are coming
down to reasonable levels and the fact is, you can't find 286s in the shops any
more. THe local Wal
mart has two on their shelf, both priced at less than $700, no monitors. One
has 1M RAM/40M HD and the other has 2M RAM/85M HD. But if I can get a 386DX
for $1500, there's no reason to be crippled.

     DRDOS on a TL2
     From: GMORIN To: ALL

To all,
This reply may be late, but someone might benefit.

DRDOS 6.0 will not recognize Drive B: on any TL2. This how I got around
the problem, but not without a small glitch.

 Type SETUPTL2/A from the dos prompt;
set up just as I have it here........ for a 360K 5.25 drive,

DISKETTE DRIVE A DESIGNATION TOP BOTTOM
 NUMBER OF FLOPPY DRIVES 2
 DRIVE 0 3-1/2 INCH
 DRIVE 1 NONE
 DRIVE 2 NONE

I know it seems odd but it is the * * ONLY * * way drdos 6.0 will see
drive b:.....in config.sys add;

 DRIVPARM=/D:1 /F:0 /H:2 /N /S:9 /T:40

The /n tells drdos that the drive is for permanent media. the clitch
is that you cannot format a disk in that drive. I never used drive B:
much, so when I needed to format disks I used to boot from a DOS 3.3
disk, then format a whole box.

Also I have Deskmate runtime files that allow you to use the programs
like LOTUS-DM, Deskmate Q&A Write, Form Finisher, Instant Pages etc.
with all of the DOS upgrades, MSDOS 5, DRDOS 6. But they will not allow
you to run deskmate programs, ie, text.pdm, worksheet.pdm, filer.pdm etc.

If the need is there for them let me know, I will upload them to the
Crossfire Database.

Well, DOS 5.0 and all the various memory managers help you put
that memory to good use (on 80286 or better computers). On my
T3000 NL, I have 2 MB of RAM. Between 640 and 1024 is Video
Memory, System ROM Shadowed in RAM, and lots and lots of UMB
(Upper Memory Blocks).

It's the UMB that the memory managers create. I put Terminate
and Stay Resident (or POP UP) software [ MOUSE.SYS, ANSI.SYS,
PRINT.COM (resident part), and some other stuff ] in the UMB,
which frees up the space those programs would have used in the
conventional 640K.

Now, the handfull of PCs Tandy made that go to 768K of memory are
the ones that have useless memory! (The extra 128K is used for
Extended Tandy Graphics modes - so it isn't a complete waste if
you still use the ETGA).

legal vendors at the Dallas Sidewalk sale on the fingers of one _foot_.

Look... anyone can sell a motherboard. It's not regulated. It's a
component of a system that is supposed to be tested and certified.

Even if you build it at home.

Even if you build twenty a month in your garage.

So, you can buy a motherboard from some folks? You can buy one
from any compnay's parts department!

Not certified... and certainly not warranteed unless you put it
in the machine it was designed for. But you can do it.

If anyone has experienced problems with DrDos 6 not recognizing your floppy
drives for what they are, so have I. I contacted DRI and was told by their
techies that the reason is that their DOS is far more thourough in checking
interrupts, etc during the boot procedures than MS DOS is. They also said
that Tandy has done some pretty proprietary thing in configuring their
machines. With that in mind, I proudly deleted DR DOS 6.0 into oblivion.
I then installed MS-DOS 5.0 and now my little Tandy purrs like a kitten!
Basically, running DR DOS on a Tandy is not unlike running diesel fuel in
a gasoline engine. It will run, but not as smoothly as it should.
