Does anyone know of easy-to-use software that can be used
for scheduling - specifically, scheduling readers at
weekend church services? It would involve about 30 names,
10 assignments per weekend over 10 weeks, and 3 or 4
variables such as "no Saturdays," "no 8 a.m. service,"
"skip specific dates," etc. I'm using a Tandy 1000SX
and Deskmate 3. Any ideas gratefully received.

Sandlinj,
Tandy computers are excellent systems. What turns most people away, is the
high prices. I've had the T2000, 1400LT, and 1400HD. The T2000 was fine,
until I had the hard disk installed. Never had a problem with the other two
systems.
The unfortunate thing here is that I am on a fixed income: Federal
Disability. This doesn't allow the major expenditure required for a new
Tandy 100 percent compatible. I got a clone, instead. I still like the very
high quality of Tandy systems. I do not like their penchant for doing
proprietary things with the motherboards (1000TX).

Cstan,
Make sure the SIMMS are all the same speed (70ns) and installed correctly.
A speed mismatch will cause problems. Also, make sure that the SIMMS are
identical in a single memory bank. You can 256Ks in one bank and 1Ms in the
other, but you cannot mix types in the same bank. On the 16 bit bus systems
(286 and 386SX) the bank size is two (2) SIMMS.

Alex, I have the Tandy 2500 SX/25. Any 1meg x 9, 3 chip SIMMS (Single
Inline
Memory Modules) will work on the 2500. Current magazine prices show $30 to
$35 per megabite. Rumor has it that prices are going up 150% in the near
future. Better get some quick, before the price increase. I have added 2
meg to mine and am going to buy two more meg this week. Oh yes, 4 meg SIMMS
will also plug into the 2500, but you can't mix 1 and 4 meg SIMMS in the
same bank. It is explained pretty well in your 2500 manual. Four meg SIMMS
are about $150.

Instead of using HSECT and AUTOFMT, try the following.

Load up DEBUG and at the - prompt, type G=C800:5. Most of the old 8-bit HD
Controllers had a built-in low level formatting program in ROM on the card.
If you have one of these formatters, you should be able to plug in the

     From: DAIRYLADY To: ALLEGRETTO

Allegretto,

Coincidentally, someone else was questioning the 128K memory kit in
Letters to PCM. The following is a quote from the new issue, November 1992,
page 7:

"What you are witnessing is a sleight-of-hand trick used in the Tandy
1000-series. Most PC compatibles have 640K of memory between memory
addresses 00000h and 9FFFFh and up to 128K of video memory between A0000h
and BFFFFh. Tandy cheated in the design of the 1000-series by not including
the video memory in the A0000h to BFFFFh range - instead, video memory is
allocated as needed from DOS memory (the 640K chunk from 00000h to 9FFFFh).
When you boot the computer, you initially have 640K; but 16K is allocated
for the text screen, leaving you with 624K. If you switch to a graphics
screen, up to 128K is stolen, leaving you with as little as 512K of usable
memory. When you add the 128K upgrade, the video memory is moved out of DOS
memory so that you get 640K total usable memory."

Interesting, huh? I guess that finally solves the mystery we've all been
puzzling over! It's not expanded or extended anything - just putting back
what should have been there in the first place.

                                       Sue.

standard it was for. Does this sound familiar. I looked back over the
existing messages but I didn't see anything.

concerning an improved DOS (V 3.3) for the T2000. I think this is a noble
effort but like you said, probable of limited use. After 7 years of doing
battle with the incompatiblity of the T2000, I am planning to bail out soon.
Most of the time I got by with my own progamming for data analysis and
plotting, but at other times I found myself hacking away trying to get
something to run. With computer prices dropping even further, I can no longer
justify spending the extra time trying to make the 2000 work.
I may not give up on the 2000 entirely, I havn't decided yet what to do with
my old machine.
Thanks for any information you may have regarding the CM-1. I've compared
the pin connections for the monitor with those for VGA cards and they are
not pin compatible. One item I am not sure about though, there is a red,
green, and blue return connection for the monitor back to the VGA card. Is
is used? If not, a custom cable could be made?
Thanks again. Dave O'Neill.

     t1000SX and intel memory boards
     From: GLENTZ To: ALL

Just wanted to let people know that the INTEL Matched Memory Classic Memory
board and the INTEL Above Board ISA both work fine in a Tandy 1000SX(XT
compatible type) with VGA, 286 Express card, Hard drive and Serial/Parallel
board. Both boards are 8/16 b
it boards that can provide expanded and/or extended memory(extended memory
requires the board to be in a 16 bit slot). Expanded memory is hardware
compatible LIM 4.0. The Classic board works fine but you have to tell it that
it is installed in an IBM P
S/2 Model 30 not a regular PC/XT compatible. Intel says the only major
difference between the two settings is the bus timing. The IBM doesn't follow
normal timing for an 8 bit system so Intel made this special command line switch

for the memory manager
. Also the expanded memory checking program Intel supplies crashes with this
setup no matter what type of system you tell it.

I have tested both boards fairly extensively and highly recommend either one
over the MicroMainframe board(memory expansion limitations and only LIM 3.2
hardware compatible). I would also recommend the INTEL board over the INVISIBLE

EMS board mainly on
price(Inv. EMS=$200) but also because expanding the INV. EMS beyond 2Mb is very
expensive(you have to use 4x1Mb DRAM chips which are not easy to find nor cheap
+ you have to buy 18 of them all at once).

Other differences/observations

1. Classic=$140, Above Board=$180 but was shipping with PC-Tools 7.1 and
386Max.

2. Classic=8Mb max using 1Mb Simms(has to be 9 chip not 3 chip), AB=32Mb using

256, 1 or 4Mb Simms any combination of 2 at a time.

3. AB memory manager can map more of the uppper memory area so that pgms like
QRAM can load more things "high".

4. Both boards were able to supply conventional memory after I cut my system
memory to 384Kb. But the memory boards could only supply memory starting at
256Kb or 512Kb which isn't an option on the T1000SX so I had overlapping memory
areas which of cour
se caused problems. Being able to supply conventional memory is supposed to
help programs such as DESQVIEW.

when tandy first did it and didn't have a 128K upgrad~x(e
available(sorry for all the line noise) in their 1000's before the TX.

I guess most people who have had a T1000 series for quite some time just took
it for granted. Obviously some new owners of T1000's don't know about this
as well as some of the oldster's who never really looked into expansion.

For the record-DairyLady is right on with her quote. One additional thing
should be mentioned though. If you upgrade to EGA or VGA the onboard video
is disabled and all of the 640K is available whether you have the 128K video
upgrade or not. So basically the 128K upgrade is useless if you have EGA/VGA
system. If someone wanted to access the 128K they would have to figure out
how to program the onboard video controller and find a way to remap the 128K
so that it wouldn't interfere with normal video memory locations from EGA/VGA
card. I guess it would be like writing an expanded memory manager that could
map that 128K into other upper memory areas so that it could be used as upper
memory blocks by programs such as QRAM.

As an addition to message 21573

I have been able to create approx 160K of upper memory blocks/expanded memory
page frame. The UMB's were created by using a Shareware pgm called MEMKIT.
It allows you to use DOS=umb and devicehigh, loadhigh as long as you have a
pc/xt with Hardware LIM 4.0 expanded memory or an AT with the right Chip Set and

enough total memory(ie extended) or also lim 4.0 expanded memory.

I have been able to load everything high that I normally use on my system +
several new TSR's that I didn't use because they took too much conventional
memory.

MEMKIT essentially provides the same end result as QRAM, NETROOM etc.
Registration price is $45.

     From: THESTRANGER To: BUBBIE

The 1200 is a TRUE XT clone clear down to the switch settings on the
motherboard. As such, you don't need Tandy DOS for this machine, When I was
a Customer Service Rep for Tandy, we used to demo the compatibility of this
machine by booting from an IBM PC-DOS diskette.

There are several vendors in Computer Shopper and other magazines, that
carry the bootable version of DOS 5 (i.e. NOT the DOS 5 Upgrade, which
requires you to have a currently working version of DOS). This will work
just fine on the 1200.

One such source is CompuAbility: 1-800-558-0003. Ask for MS-DOS 5.0
w/Hologram. Price is $74.95 in their current catalog.

I think you can just pull the little connector that the speaker
wires run to off the board. If they are soldered to the board,
you could cut the wires (near the middle) and splice in a
polorized connector - then the disconnect isn't permanent.

I'm not sure what effect there would be on the speaker circuit
with out the speaker connected.

I would agree that Tandy makes good machines but somewhat overpriced.
I was willing to pay that premium for their highly touted service. I have
owned 6 Tandy machines up until when I bought a 1000tl. It was DOA
and I spent almost 5 months getting it replaced. After that I swore
never again. They run reliably when they run, but if you EVER have a

All the machines are still running and usable to this day but then
so are the other machines I have purchased since then (a Gateway

Hi Frank. I think SANDLINJ's `pull the plug' suggestion will work if you
want a long term, but reversible, silence. In case you want to hack, though,
I'll try to relate the volume mod I did on my old 1000SX about a year ago.

Assuming the black wire to the speaker to be the ground, I desoldered the
other (gray) wire from the speaker. Using additional light wire, I put a
5K ohm resistor pot (salvaged from some small appliance) between the gray
wire and its speaker connection. I used silicone rubber cement (both as glue
and insulation) to mount the pot on the metal inner face of the computer and
drilled a hole in the case for the volume knob and that was that. I might
have done better with a different resistor value, though. On your basic
scale of 1 to 10, 7 = silence, and 10 = full volume. This must be something
like your previous volume modification, eh? Hope this helps.

     Serial to PS/2 mouse conversion
     From: GSJENKINS To: ALL

I've got a minor problem that I'm sure someone out there can help with. I
ahve a Tandy 2500 SX/25 with a PS/2 style mouse port. I used the original
Tandy mouse with PS/2 connector until I realized there were many better
choices to choose from. I bought a Microsoft mouse with a serial connector,
because the store didn't have one with a PS/2 connector. I've now decided I
would like my serial port back, but keep my serial mouse, so I bought a
serial to PS/2 port adapter. Problem: It doesn't work. It won't work in
DOS or Windows. During boot up, my machine reports no mouse detected on the
system. Ouch! I can plug my old Tandy mouse into the PS/2 port, reboot and
everything works fine. Plug the serial mouse in the serial port, and
everything works fine there. I can't understand why an adapter would be
manufactured that will not adapt. I've tried different mouse drivers-- no
change. As long as I have the serial mouse plugged into the serial to PS/2
adapter, my system doesn't see a mouse. HELP!
I've had problems with adapter type devices before. Usually some wires
had to be swapped around to make it work. I assume that is the problem
here. Maybe someone knows which wires to switch, or maybe someone has a
schematic of a serial mouse and PS/2 mouse connections/pin arrangements.
Thanks in advance.

Stewart...

PS: My local Radio Shack is scratching their heads on this. Boy, they

I have had the 2500 SX/25 for about seven months. I LOVE IT--but, if I had
it to do over again, I would go with, at the minimum, a 386DX processor. I
love my system, but I already want to upgrade to a 486. There is nothing
wrong with the 2500 SX/25, I just know there is something better for not a
lot more money. The 85 meg hard drive is *very* quiet, and fast. The
program Accesstime shows a 16 ms average. If you have a decent monitor,
consider buying the Model 4825 SX. It has 4 megs total ram-- two more than
the 2500 SX/25, and you will need it if you are going to run Windows, two is
not enough; it has a 120 meg hard drive- you will need it if you take
advantage of Windows 3.1 which is included- I aleady have 80 megs on mine;
It will also be easier to upgrade to a full blown 486DX--Just plug in the
overdrive chip. After using the 1000SX, you will quickly see what power is
with the 2500, and you will want more. I probably won't upgrade my
motherboard, because I doubt if I can ever take advantage of all the
possibilities of the 386sx processor, but the thought of more power is
intriguing.
In summary, I love my system, no problems whatsoever, but the 486sx would
have been a better choice. I hope I haven't caused you more confusion.

Sorry for the bad news: the CM-1 is by all normal definitions a unique monitor
designed explicitly and exclusively for the Tandy 2000. It cannot be made
to work with any "normal" video card, even with special cabling, to my
knowledge. There WAS a special card put out by Tandy for a while when they
were trying to unload all their CM-1's that was a CGA+enhanced CM1 modes card
for PC compatibles. MAYBE (but I don't thinks so) some magic can be done
to come up with EGA card driving the monitor, but not VGA for sure.

I wanted to upgrade my Tandy so I used the DOS 5.0. To maintain

difficulty loading DOS high trying to figure out the right
line in the config.sys. This is what works: C:\dos\himem.sys/

If anyone else has had similar success, let me know.

the best fix, eh? ;) I just did the hack again! I picked up a newer Tandy
4033LX a few days ago and while inside setting up the cards I snipped the
speaker wires and ran them out of the case. They're currently alligator
clipped to the speakers in a dead portable radio (through another salvaged
volume control, of course) and awaiting a more permanent setup. Volume
control is a must for `middle of the night gamers' like me, and the better
sound of the larger speakers is a bonus, too. Well, I think I'm `blathering'
here so I'll stop now. Good luck with whichever mod you choose.

Since you HX has DESKMATE in ROM, you don't get all the files you
need when you copy the files to floppy for use on another system.
What you get are the drivers that look for the ROM (and
consequently will lockup any system that doesn't have the ROM).

I'm sorry to say you will need to buy the stand alone version for things
to work.
