     From: SANDYT To: DAVEGON (NR)

GT Powercom is my choice, it is only available at 15.50, never to be enhanced
for the 2000 again, although the IBM version is at least to version 17,
according to the developpers.
I use it in host mode (running a BBS), because it is easy to extend its
capabilities,
but it is not very elegant about some things. The developers will not support
us any more... they no longer have the source for 15.50, and will not share
any info about internals. The reason is that use must use the FOSSIL version,
and they stripped out the FOSSIL support for version 16.

     2000 DOS Upgrade Interest???
     From: SANDYT To: ALL

Anyone still interested in coming up with a DOS 3.31+ for the Tandy 2000, based
on DR-DOS version 3 and our existing MS-DOS 2.11.03 for the 2000?
I have much if not all the source, an assembler, and a BBS set up to exchange
information, ideas, and code. It would be a sizable investment in time
with little practical result (let's face it, we will not overcome the
hardware differences --- this will not become an IBM emulator), and I do not
have the time or experience to do it alone. Anybody want to get involved?
By the way, I have found that many of the external commands from DR-DOS 6.0
such as XDIR, XCOPY, work just fine on the existing DOS, so for licencing
I propose that a user would buy DR-DOS 6.0, and we would give them the
actual system files and whatever other utilities are needed to give them
a decent DOS. I have even considered a BIOS-level CGA emulator driver, and/or
a subset of EGA, for emulation on the CM-1. Let me know whether I should give
up, or can we get started???

I read that too - I've considered typing it in - though with some
modifications since my computer "wraps" farther than his seems to
have - infact it goes all the way around to 130!

With C I just accessed the port directly and read the full 8 bit
value (using "unsigned char"). Maybe with the routines listed in
PCM, I'll be able to use basic.

I am a non-programmer who decided to see if he was smart enough to learn.
I got Borland's Turbo C++ for DOS v3.0, which includes Turbo C. I'm running
it on a 486 but the box says it will run on a 286. It requires 1mb extended ram
and of course, a harddrive. It comes with a huge manual that I haven't opened
yet as I selected "Teach Yourself C" by Herbert Schildt, publ. by
Osborne/McGraw-Hill. I've had th
is a week and can already make simple (real simple... hehehe) programs that
work.

If you have the 1mb ram, you can set the program up to run as an IDE, as they
call it (looks like a standard Borland-type user interface to me) or as a
command-line program.

The interface is quite intuitive. It will make good use of a math coprocessor,
especially for floating-point math; the included VROOM technology will emulate
the chip if its not present.

A lot of people in the PC Compat. Forum have been recommending
POWER C (I forget by whom). It is inexpensive and works well.

I use Microsoft QuickC, which is about $100, and isn't
necessarily for beginning programmers. If you alread know a
language, or C in particular, it is pretty good, though.

My personal recommendation for learning programming, though, is
very cheap. Most computers come with BASIC, including the TL/3.
You just go out to the book store and find a book on programming
in BASIC for beginners (aimed at PC compatible users). So if you
want to learn programming, you could learn to program in BASIC,
as a "starter" language, as I did.

I don't know if it's in print still, but the book I learned from
is "BASIC AND THE PERSONAL COMPUTER" by Thomas A. Dwyer and
Margot Critchfield (published by: Addison-Wesley Publishing
Company). It may or may not be in print - mine is from 1978,
the first edition.

I have a Tandy 1000 SX with a up grade of a 640K, 3 1/2 & 5 1/4 disk drives
and a hard drive. Yesterday I booted up and my system would not recognize
my B drive. Everytime I tried to use it, it would try to read A drive.
When I looked at the internal connections I found that it showed I only
had one floppy drive. I was able to by pass this by assigning A=B in
order that I could use my B drive. After turning the system off several
times and then rebooting, each time I would have to re-assign. Tonight
when I booted up both drives worked again.

I am hoping someone out there can tell me what happened and whether it
is a sign I have internal problems. Any help would be appreciated.

I can't really explain it for you but I have endured almost identical
problems. My system (same as yours), after bootup, would give me a prompt
when I tried to call a floppy <Insert diskette in Drive (floppy letter) and
strike Enter>, and then always access drive A:. This didn't happen on every
boot, though, so I was able to note the instances and backtrack to a software
cause. It turned out to be a small, and VERY old, game program called
MOONBUGS. The game requires a reboot to exit and, it seems, a cold boot
(Reset or power down/up) always fried the floppies. A warm boot, however,
left them working fine. I still have no idea how a software glitch could
survive overnight in an SX and affect operations the next day. I guess my
point is THINK SOFTWARE as a possible cause of the problem. Maybe a new
program, TSR, or adjustment to CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT is the culprit.

Hope this is of some help.

     Tandy serial port
     From: MAWATERS To: ALL

Has anyone experienced problems with their serial ports? I am operating a BBS
here in Louisiana, and the BBS SIG hasn't been able to help me too much.

The problem is this:

I have my com port locked at 19,200 baud. For some strange reason, it will
lock my entire system up if a caller were to drop carrier while data is still
in the buffer waiting to be sent. I have to turn the modem off and on again to
get the board to reset. Could this be the fault of the serial port or the
modem itself? I have a Practical Peripherals PM9600SA external modem. There is

no way to control the buffer size of the modem, so I don't really know what the
problem could be. I'm thinking about trashing my Tandy or at least get a new
I/O card with the 16550 UART.

Also, if I DO get a new serial card, is there any way I can disable the internal

serial port so I can still use COM1?

Thanks for any help!

controls 128K of memory. This DRAM is shared by the CPU and the video.
Normally, the video requires only 16K or 64K for the video screen, and the
remainder of the 128K is available for system memory use." Therefore, even
though it can't be accessed by a memory manager, it still helps to have it

DCROYAL,

the middle of May when I bought it. It is a beautiful piece of engineering,
solid, reliable, and a pleasure to use. Aside from breaking my mouse (due to
a short temper and some troublesome shareware), I've had no major problems
with the hardware. I've installed a second floppy drive, a modem, and a
SoundBlaster card, and they're all working fine.
I am also a member of Prodigy, and I am unimpressed by the apparent level
of intellectual acuity of many of the people who post messages there, or to
put it bluntly, they're probably too stupid to appreciate a Tandy computer
anyway.

I think very highly of Tandy computers. I have two of them! I
don't yet have the newest technology, but what I do have has been
very reliable.

My Tandy 1000 SX was purchased in 1986. It is still running
strong.

Don't let anyone tell you that Tandy computers aren't good
machines. Even in 1986 when they weren't 100% compatible (though
I have yet to find software that doesn't like it) and you had to
buy Tandy 1000 specific parts, the maching was a good machine.

Today's Tandy computers (except the 1000 line) are 100%
compatible. And they are still good machines.

DCROYAL,

You've come to the right place! I'm not lucky enough to have anything so
up to date as the 4825 SX, but I've never been sorry I bought my Tandy 1000
TL over 3 years ago. My observation is there is a lot of false information
about Tandy computers circulating among non-Tandy-using people. When people
with some of these ideas come to my house, I just show them what can be done
with a Tandy. So far, every one of those people has been impressed, and some
have even apologized for making a smart remark or two beforehand. So you
don't need to second-guess your choice of a computer.

Now, about Prodigy: visit the PC Compatible Forum and follow an old
thread about Prodigy to see what people here think of it!

                                       Sue.

Prodigy's Computer Club is an excellent resource, and most of the regulars do
in fact know what they're talking about; just abouttonly area that's a bit out
of control on a regular basis is the Beginners topic, which is filled with kids
who fight with each
other. They seem to have a "let's patch things up" conversation about every 10
days. Other than that, you will find that for every hardware or software
product discussed, there's at least one or two people who seem to make a
lifestyle out of bashing the p
roduct. In the area where Tandy is discussed, there's really only one or two,
and one in particular, that seem to enjoy bashing. When things get out of
control, the bashers get bashed back.

The Computer Club is more a general users club and does not usually get a lot
of technical-type posts. For technical and more intricate usage questions --
software and hardware -- this, the PC and Tandy Sig, is the place to be.

As for Tandy, I have two... the 1000TL/2 and the 4850 EP. My computer, which
will probably be purchased next Spring and will be whatever is out then, will
also be a Tandy. Tandy's are sturdy and reliable... they're workhorses that
seem to stand up to a lot
of use and abuse. I work for myself and my computer represents the heart of my
business. When I turn it on, I need to know it will work. And keep on working.
If you'll notice, most of the user posts here, and on *P, for that matter, that
have to do with T
andy usually have to do with getting older models to accept this or that
peripheral... hardware upgrade questions. *Rare* is the post where a user is
crying that a major component has suddenly died... if you'll check the threads
on other computers on *P, y
ou'll find an amazing number of these kinds of failure posts. I can't afford
that happening on this side of the modem.

I've never had any difficulty loading any software into either machine with one
caveat... unlike some others, perhaps, if a software program says it needs 4mb
ram and a 386, I don't pretend it should run on the TL/2. I field user
questions on several syste
ms for a few software products and when it comes down to bizarre operating
problems, I never know what to say except 'I don't know, I have a Tandy, works
over here." Most of the time, I can't even duplicate the problem because things
are running so smoothl

I have a Tandy 2500SX/20 and wish to upgrade my Ram - will thsi machine supprot
4Meg Simms, or do I have to buy the expansion board from Radio Shack (that seems

It came with 1 meg of Ram, and I installed the Windows package which

installed that, but somehow nothing seems to recognize that it is in there.

Run (from DOS) SETUPSX and tell the machine it has that much memory.

See if that helps.

I was on Prodigy tooo for a while... And I also sensed the
complete Lack of mental power submiited on that service. Fortunatly,
I recieved the package free to test!!! anyway...
Ive had this old beast of a T1000 TX, and she's NEVER failed(knock

patches into other systems many times and I can only hope that whatever
( Tandy of Course!) that I upgrade to will be as "Bulllet-Proof" as
this little beast!
Ive also found, that due to "glitches" shall I say in compatability,
Tandy owners have always been a bit apart from IBM owners as a whole,
and a much tighter group. Hell, I suppose that It takes a bit more
intestinal fortitude to play with Tandy computers!
Hell.... anybody can go down to the computer shop and buy a

I also have the 2500SX/20 that I installed an additional 2MB of Ram.
After I ran the SetupSX program, I get 640K Base and 2432K Extended memory
upon turning the Tandy on. Are you getting the same thing on your screen?

As far as I know you can only go up to 5MB on the motherboard and up to
16MB if you install any memory expansion boards.

Look on page 22 of the Tandy 2500SX User's guide. It shows exactly how
much memory and what type Simms that the machine supports.

perhaps the controller chip is different.

I own a Tandy 2500 SX/25 and it is great. (386sx) No problems with the
machine. Well made, with the latest surface mount technology components on
the board. I, too, feel it is better made than the IBM's at work. I would
not hesitate recommending one to anyone. As to the level of expertise
behind the counter, I have nothing positive to say. The most computer
illiterate folks I have ever seen. If I didn't already know what I wanted
when I went in, I wouldn't get it. Unfortunately, it's become a joke to me.
I regularly stop in to ask a stupid question just to see what kind of reply
they can conjure up. I hope this is not indicative of the majority of the
Radio Shack stores. Maybe a Tandy computer center would have more
knowledgeable people.

Yes, the 2500sx/25 can accept 4 meg simms, I don't know about the /20.
Setupsx should fix your problem. It worked for me. You should probably
have shadow ram enabled, which will show less memory on bootup than you
expect. Probably about 384kb less.

Mike, that is just what I show; problem that I have is that I installed an
additional 2 megs (total of 5), but nothing that I can do will get it to
recognize
the last 2 megs. I have run 'setupsx' from the C: drive, I have run 'setupsx'
from the MS-DOS 5.0 floppy. Same results - as far as my system is concerned,
that last 2 megs simply doesn't exist. BTW, no help from the local RS people.<G>

I believe that you are right, the 2500SX/20 can accept 4, 1MB Simms on
the motherboard. Do you think that there is a chance that he got the wrong
type Simms and that is why it is not showing the proper amount?

Any chance it could be WINDOWS causing the problem?

Are the last 2MB Simms that you put in the same type, (1X9 70NS) as the
first ones that you installed? I don't know how true it is but I have heard
people on Delphi state that they have had problems when they MIX and MATCH
Simms types.

It doesn't supprise me that the local R.S. people weren't of any help.
It is very rare that you run into a regular salesman that actually has the
time to keep up on all the different models and versions of computers that
Tandy constantly spits out.

One of my 5 Tandy's happen to be the 2500SX/20. I also upgraded to the 4 Meg of

ram. The Simms are of different types. The second set I put in I was in a hurry

and put in backwards. It reacted the same as yours. When I reinstalled the se
second set it worked okay, with the exception on a cold boot, it only reports
2 meg. I reboot and then everything is fine. The other 2500 I have has a matche
