Hi Stan. I too used to have a 1000TX... now I have a 3000NL. I purchased the
Smartwatch chip, too, installed it myself, and used the software provided. I
did experience the complete loss of time and/or date upon boot many times.
Fortunately for me, i d
idn't experience any catastrophic software problems as a result, but I sure had
a lot of strange file creation dates! I never found a cure even though I
talked to many Tandy service people. Best advice.... keep a good backup of
your data, and live with o
it. It probably happened about once a month in my case, which was too often in
my opinion. I'm sure we are not the only ones..

Fireline,

It'll cost you a little more to get it as a back issue, but you can order
a December issue from PCM. It would probably be worth it if you are
considering buying a new motherboard.

I am under the impression that the Slot Box can be used for computers
other than Tandys, but maybe a phone call to DCS would be best. Their number

Stan,

It's taken me a long time to answer this, I know, but I've been thinking
over any similarities that might exist between your clock/time problem and
my computer. My TL came with the clock/time chip either already installed or
as an integral part of the CPU. It requires a lithium battery for power when
the computer is off. When the time started sort of "drifting off," I
naturally thought the battery was needing to be replaced, and R.S. agreed
that it had been longer than the rated life (I forgot how long that is now).
However, replacing the battery did not solve the problem, and every week or
two, I have to go into F10 Setup and reset the correct time. It has never
interfered with booting up, though, so there is probably no relation to what
you described. I hope you can figure it out, because bootup problems are
certainly a lot more worrisome than the time just drifting.

                                        Sue.

     From: STANB To: CHRISA

That's roughly how often it happens to me --- about once a month, more or
less. The only problem it causes is that upon reboot if the date comes up as
some date in the future, my REMINDER utility would dump all of its events. I
learned to work around the problem. If the boot process hangs up I promptly
insert a special bootable disk in Drive A: and turn off the power. Then when
I turn the power on again to reboot I reset the date and time (via SMWCLOCK).
At that point I reboot from the hard drive, and everything is allright.

In this way my EVENTS file doesn't get dumped. That's a lot of work to go
through, buts it's better than having to reconstruct my list of upcoming
reminder EVENTS.

You know, some time ago I asked Mike Salisbury (MISAL) about this problem
and he referred to the TANDY SmartWatch chip as the DUMBWATCH!!! Go Figure.
I'm beginning to think he's right.

I recently received a response from CHRISA who used to have a 1000TX also and
installed a SmartWatch chip in it. The same problem with about the same
frequency was described. I've devised a work-around for my problem, but
it's a drag nevertheless.

As I said in my earlier message, it's only a problem with my programs which
need the correct date for proper action --- like an automatic reminder
utility. If it sees a date far in the future, it spills its guts and I have
to reconstruct my reminder file (unless I catch the problem and exercise the
work-around that I've devised).

Now, to get back to your problem of time drift. I know that while you're
using your PC, its DOS TIME can drift from the time kept by your CLOCK-
CALENDAR chip. Whenever you reboot, that discrepancy corrects itself
automatically. However, your CLOCK/CALENDAR chip can get offtime itself.
Every so often I run a program called CALLTIME. It uses the MODEM to dialup
the Naval Observatory in Washington, DC, grabs the time & date off the
ATOMIC CLOCK, and resets the CLOCK/CALENDAR chip. Where I'm located, the
call only costs me 29 cents at most. (I've seen similar programs that
access an observatory in Colorado.) I then use the time mark feature of the
program to correct the time on my incredibly elegant $10 Casio watch <GRIN>.

Seriously, who really needs time accurate to within fractions of a second,
but it's just such a NEAT program.

Could be. It will have the effect of raising prices for the various
components (boards, etc.). Being both an Amateur Radio Operator, and a

of Class B standards. I started in MS-DOS with the Tandy 2000. It was Class
B certified, but generated RFI that made some things very difficult.
Currently, I have a 386DX-25 clone (no name) and it generates RFI. I can't
afford a good system like Tandy. Most of the problem seems to be the cabling.

Sounds like Big Brother is trying to screw up something else!!! They already
have screwed up the general aviation industry to a point that it may not
survive! Everything has dramatically increased in price (and in mandatory
equipment needed just to operate the planes). They are trying to make it
imposible for people to be able to upgrade their systems without paying for
an entire new system all at once. And not let anyone add anything to their
system once they have purchased it. What a way to increase the price.

this "Notice of Proposed Rule Making"? They ARE sometimes defeated in making
the proposed rule! Especially if they receive a LOT of mail against it. With
as many people that will be affected by this rule, we should be able to send
them so much mail against it that they will reconsider it. This isn't like the
general aviation population, (their are very few pilots) there are millions of

Yes, you need an add-on board to take you system up to 384K or higher. I

to accept more memory than the others. And it can use the higher memory for
DOS, which the others can't. I think it runs for about $149.

You might note that the way things look, as long as you assembled an approved

better than the current practice, where you are illegal aby time you

after loading about 4 of the new generation of games, you would need a new

Look for Vuimage and Cshow in the Graphics Database here or over in the

Most files on Delphi use .zip compression. The newest PKUNZIP is required to

Hi Giz. ;) If you have an empty card slot and a few hundred bucks you should
have no problems switching to VGA. I'd recommend a VGA card with 1 Meg of
memory and a monitor capable of displaying 1024x768 pixels. Interlaced
monitors show a bit of flicker in the 800x600 and 1024x768 modes but are much
cheaper than non-interlaced or multi-sync monitors. I've been using a bottom
of the line Aamazing card (Trident 8900 chipset) and interlaced monitor (same
brand) with a .39 dot pitch for about a year and I like it just fine.

Switching to VGA should give you back a good chunk of ram memory that 1000s
use for Tandy graphics, too.

What other 90s upgrades did you have in mind?

upgrade the Tandy's (ALL OF THEM). Yes you can upgrade to VGA, get a memory
upgrade card, a faster modem (internal or external, but for an external you
may need a serial card if you have a mouse), or any of several other types
of upgrades that are available. PC Enterprises one of their advertizers has
recently come out with several cards for the Tandys. DCS Industries, another
one of the advertizers has a little book called "Upgrading you Tandy". You

Gizmo,

Yes, you can upgrade to VGA. But unless you want to buy a card with more
than 256K of video memory so that you can move it to another computer later,
don't spend money to buy more than 256K for the TL/2, because it has 8-bit
slots. When you choose a monitor, you will only be able to use the
"standard" VGA modes. However, a smaller dot pitch of .28, found in the
fancier monitors *capable* of displaying SVGA, will really smooth things out
so that you won't mind not having more VGA memory available. It will make
the most of the fanciest software the TL/2 is able to run. A cheap way to
speed things up is to add the 80287 math coprocessor, too.

The next thing would be a faster modem. 1200 baud was OK at the time the
TL/2 was sold, but 2400 is the bottom now. Unless you sign onto local BBSes
that have really fast data transfer rates, 2400 will get you by on any
service you have to access through Sprintnet or Tymnet, in most places.

Other than the low resolution monitor you got with it, it looks to me
like you got a pretty nice system, and you can't beat the price! The TLs
were a good series of 1000 models. I still like my 1000 TL very much. Even
if I should get a more powerful computer in the next few years, I'll
definitely keep the TL. It does everything I need my computer to do -
anything more will be pure luxury. Have fun!

S.T.,

I played around with Tree View after reading your post, just to refresh
my memory, and remembered why I never use it: too slow. It's so much easier
just to escape to DOS and pull directories when I need to. However, to
answer your question, the Tree view is set from the View F5 menu. Set the
check mark to Tree. When you run a program from the Tree view, then exit, it
will go back to the Tree view. If you exit DeskMate from the Files F2 menu,
then turn the computer off, it *will* "stick" for the next time you boot.
It'll only go back to the regular Desktop when you again pull down the View
F5 menu and change the check mark to Menus. Remember, the boxes shown on the
Tree are only the drives and directories. The files in the directories come
up when you click on one of the directory boxes (or Tab and press Enter).

Unless there are some radical differences in VGA cards from different
manufacturers, you have been misinformed. Perhaps some old cards were
limited by an 8 bit interface but my cheap clone card autodetects what type
of slot it is in and responds accordingly. I used it in a 1000SX and it
displayed all modes up to 1024x768x256 colours just fine. The only
difference in using a 16 bit slot is a 30 to 40% increase in display speed.

Hello! I'm new on this forum, I finally got up the nerve to use this modem.
I've been using a TL-3 for almost a year, got it on a close out sale. I
upgraded to VGA with an Oak 512k card, and a goldstar 1460 monitor, and they
both work fine together. I had
typed in a number of PCM programs in GW-Basic, and now they wonpwon't run on
VGA, and I haven't learned enough programming skill

to convert them, one in particular is Questing for Adventure. If anybody could
help, I would be grateful to hear from you.
I put in the (now useless) 128k chips, and read with interest the messages from
almost a year ago on this forum about possibly rewriting a memory manager
program for a Tandy 1400 that seemed to recognize that extra memory. Has
anybody heard of any progress
on that line? I'm having trouble with this editor, keep getting unwanted cr
and lf. I'm using Deskmate 3.05 and telecom, didn't have much trouble figuring
out telecom. Any other users out there with TL-3s who would like to reply with
e-mail and share expa

my 1000 TL. It can handle up to 1024x768x16 colors, or 640x480x256 colors.
Sorry, not 1024x768x256 colors in the 8-bit slot. That mode would require it

Don,

I have a 1000 TL (came before TL/2 and TL/3). I'm always glad to share
experiences, but I prefer the SIG rather than E-mail most of the time
because that's where we all learn from each other. I, too, like to type in
GW-BASIC programs and I had a lot of them before upgrading to VGA. I've been
able to convert some on my own and some with the help of others, and some
not at all (or not *yet*). Also, I have the 128K video chip. I recommend
leaving it in even with the VGA upgrade. (You can find the reasons in old
posts here on the forum). It's not *quite* "useless."

About DeskMate Telecom: That's what I started out with, and it's a good
way to learn. I didn't have any problems with it, and it certainly got me
onto Delphi lots of times. But I have to worry about the long distance
charges while being online interactively, so I was glad to find out about
the program I (and many, many others here) use now, called Messenger Lite (or
MLite, for short), because it allows offline preparation and reading of forum
messages and mail. Then you can log on, quickly zip through Mail and SIGs,
download automatically from the databases, and so forth. It has its own text
editing screens, sparing you the aggravation of Delphi's editors. You can
download it from the PC SIG database. It's shareware. The documentation is
short, and you should print it out, lay it across your lap, then proceed to
read and try things out. The author is online here, but he gets to answer a
lot of questions that are answered in the documentation! (Right, folks?!)

Now, with regard to Questing for Adventure: The fixes were obtained from
the author and published in a Letter to PCM in June, 1992. Take the CLEAR
,,,32768! command out of line 50, and change SCREEN 5 to SCREEN 7. Change the
DIM statements in lines 8830, 8840 and 8910 from 45 to 69; in lines 8860,
8920 and 8930 from 38 and 27 to 69. This is not a complete fix - the figure
is too uncontrollable - but at least you can see the graphics. Maybe *you*
will be the one to figure out what else will help this program. The value of
making the changes to this program is that it gives some clues to fixing
other programs as well. Take a look at DIM statements that affect GET/PUT
statements in programs that don't want to run in VGA.

You'll have to wait for replies from other members for information on the
1400 LT, OK?

                                            Sue.

DOBUTL> skill to convert them, one in particular is Questing for Adventure.

The problem on the PCM program not running is probably a SCREEN
command, and certain DIMension statements. It's been a while
since I messed with them, but I believe you need to change from
SCREEN 5 to SCREEN 7 and then you will need to test run the
program a bunch of times to see which variables don't have enough
resources available and then change the numbers in the DIM
statements to a larger value.

If you have captured all the messages from this forum, I think
you see some programming examples of how to do screen saves in
BASIC for VGA.

DOBUTL> I'm having trouble with this editor, keep getting unwanted cr and
DOBUTL> lf.

The problem with the extra CR/LF is from the way the editor
works. It can handle lines up to a certain size, then it inserts
it's own CR/LF and continues on. The way to avoid that is to put
your own CR/LF at the end of each screen line (just hit enter)
(that is, press enter before the end of 80 characters).

Another way around the proble is to write your posts offline and
upload them (ASCII transfer) to the forum. You can use a program
called MLITE to do that (PC SIG database).

My VGA experience is pretty much limited to my Aamazing 1 Meg card with

Hello, Sue, thanks for your reply. I had not done anything with questing for
adventure as yet, but used that as an example because it was the largest and
most elegant of the GW-Basic programs that I had typed in. One that I had tried
to modify was L-Scapes which generated simulated landscape pictures that were
very pretty in tga, I had made the changes to screen 7 but was still getting
an illegal function call (in which line I don't remember). Lately I have been
doing other things with this TL-3 to occupy my time. I just made the change to
DOS 5.0 and discovered that I did not have the stand alone version of Deskmate.
I had thought that I did (3.05) but Desk.exe is only 6144 bytes which should
have been a tipoff because Deskmate 3.00 which I have on my old 1000SX is over
25k for its desk.exe file. I solved the problem of getting Deskmate back to
get online with Telecom by the expedient of booting with a floppy formatted
with DOS 3.3 . I have also just downloaded Mlite so I will sit down for a while
with it and maybe see if I can use the telecommunications program in PCTools to
get online next time. (I really don't want to spend $50 at RS just for the full
length version of Desk.exe). Anyway, I appreciate hearing from you and just
wishI had warmed up this modem a long time ago.

Hi Don. Getting programs from mail files is pretty straightforward. At the
mail prompt, begin to read the message that contains the file. A binary file
will, of course, look like gibberish on the screen. Then, at the first
`Press return to continue reading mail' prompt, type `extract /noh
filename.ext' and after you press <ENTER>, the file will be copied to your
workspace. The filename can be anything you wish, like NEWPROG.ZIP (or exe.,
com., whatever's applicable). Then go to workspace and download the file.
Don't forget to go back and delete both the workspace and mail files after
you've verified that the file you downloaded works OK.

Maybe that should be `extract filename.ext /noh' but I think either one
works. Hope this helps.

To get that file that Stan is sending you by E-mail using DM Telecom,
first type EXT/NOH [filename.zip] at the MAIL> prompt. This transfers the
file to your Workspace on Delphi. Then go to your Workspace and type XDOWN
[filename.zip]. You will get an "Ok, receive!" prompt. Next, in DeskMate
Telecom, return to the Command Screen by pressing Alt+C. Then pull down the
Options menu and select Transfer file... Type the name of the file in the
dialog box. Next select Receive and Xmodem and click on OK. After a small
delay, transfer starts.

Welcome to the Tandy SIG! :)

time, I know you *not* to be a rude person. And I obviously wasn't *fully*
informed about the capabilities of my card. I call exchanges like this
"comparing notes," and that, after all, is what the Forum is all about :)
See, now it's got you thinking you have a use for that Tandy card, and we
have both benefitted! Thank you again for your input.

                                            Sue.

Hi Ben, Thanks for your help
I have just completed downloading the ems32 driver file that StanB
sent me. I also just configured and used Mlite that I downloaded a few days
ago. The default configuration for mlite ignored old mail, however , so I went
back manually with Telecom and downloaded that driver file per your instruc-
tions. Worked fine. Is there any way to download old forum messages so that I
could reread them offline? I think my 20 hours are about up. Talk to you later.

One thing that is true, now that support for the TRS-80 is limited, through CN80

several TRS-80 users have come together and found new ways do do things on
their old trusty TRS. For example, Tandy/Radio Shack had no idea what their
'new' (TRS) machines were capable of. Today, I can upgrade my M4 to 16mb
of memory when the original highest amount it was believed the computer could
have was 256k! I can use a mouse, and a scanner on my Model 4 - none
of this was thought possible!

It would be my intention to show the user just what he has sitting on his desk.
Z80 is a very powerful processor - Tandy didn't know it when they installed it.

Don,

There's no way I know of to download forum messages, new or old, except to
open your capture file and let them pour in. The easiest way that I know to
capture older messages is to specify a numerical range with the read command.
The command `rea 21800:21900 ns ft' will read the messages in that range
NonStop and Following Threads. Then close your capture file and they're
yours for as long as you want them. :) The read command also has a `since
mm/dd/yy' qualifier. Typing `rea since 2/9 ns ft' will get you everything
since Feb.9 of the current year. That's safe in this forum but be careful
with the `since' qualifier over in the PC forum (unless you have a REALLY BIG
hard drive <G>).

I've never used Telcom, and don't even have DeskMate on my newer Tandy, so
I'm not sure if it supports capture files. I have DeskMate II on an old SX
and its manual mentions only RAM buffer capture, which can be saved to disk
later. Haven't used Mlite, either, but would hope it allows you to log on
manually and operate it like a normal terminal program (including capture
file handling).

Don,

Most terminal programs, even DeskMate's Telecom, support some form of capture
buffer or file. If it is buffer, as in old DeskMate like my SX, then data
coming in through your modem is stored in memory. After you're offline, you
can read and/or save this data to a disk file. A capture *file* operates by
sending received data straight to a disk file which can be viewed later.

Your message can serve as an example. While online, I read your post. While
it was onscreen I pressed a key combination which opened my capture file and
then pressed it again to close the file. Your message was then on my hard
disk. Then I logged off Delphi, pressed another key combination in my
terminal program to start a text editor and automatically load the capture
file into it. Now I'm composing this reply beneath your message. After I
clip and save the reply (including a `rep 21916' as the first line and a
blank second line which means `accept the default recipient <you> and
subject), I'll exit from the editor back to the term program. Then I'll use
the Dialing Directory to call Delphi again, hop over to the forum, and use
yet another key combination to ASCII upload the reply. Whew! Are you as
confused yet as I am?

There are many good shareware terminal programs over in the PC Sig's Telecom
Database. I use a two program combination. My main program is Commo, and,
as it doesn't have internal zmodem, I have it call GSZ for uploading and
downloading. Registration costs about $70.00 for that combination, but there
are other programs with zmodem which may cost less. I'm not sure if
DeskMate's Telecom is up to the task these days and would recommend that you
try some of the shareware. Even an older version of Commo (I still use 5.1)
should work fine on your machine and zmodem is not really necessary (just a
bit faster and more automatic). I'm sure Mlite will do most of what you'd
like to do on Delphi but perhaps a little experience with a more `manual'
term program would make it more understandable.

Oh yeah, my `newer' Tandy is a 1991 model called 4033LX which is a 386DX.
Hope some of this helps and you just keep asking questions around here until
you get the right answers! ;>

Several months back DAIRYLADY and her cousin LESLIEJACOBY looked into setting
up a genealogy forum, but it seems that the DELPHI economics are not very
favorable for it.

Once in a while I spot an interesting shareware or freeware genealogy utility
on the SimTel20 database located at the White Sands Missile Range, New
Mexico, thru the Internet and I upload it to the PC COMPATIBLES database
here. That's about the best we can all do for the present. Those members
here who might also subscribe to CompuServe could do likewise, because
CompuServe does have a large and active Genealogy Forum.

Genealogy is very interesting, in a personal way. In my recent research I
discovered that a former grade school classmate and I are distant cousins.
Her son, an Air Force pilot of an EF-111 Raven, was killed in Desert Storm
when his aircraft was hit by ground fire while on a recon mission. Sad to
say, like most casualties of war, he left a wife and two very young children.

Don,

If you want to go back and get older Forum messages from before
installing MLite, you can select the SIG menu and find the last item on the
list, which is "Options, Defaults & Controls." A submenu comes up, from
which you should go to "Select Message Download Method." Another submenu
will come up, which gives you some choices. Probably one of the first three
would be the best choice, but anything you choose is going to be arbitrary.
The Tandy SIG won't be a problem, but if you go back very far in the PC SIG,
you are going to capture an unwieldy volume of messages. After you do this
once, you should reset to the default method.

Yes, Central Standard Time, in south-central Missouri. Where 'bouts
are you on the West Coast?

Sue, you can also get old messages with mlite by logging on manuely (press
F2) and going to each forum where you want old messages and change the HIGH
pointer. Just type "high xxxx" (without the quotes) and then exit the forum.
You can do this with as many forums as you want. Then log off, and log on
again automaticly (F2). Now mlite will capture all the messages back to
where you set the HIGH pointer.

there is a shareware program called SETBPB35. when used in your autoexec.bat
file it will fix your drive to work as 720K. Also can use the DRIVPARM
parameter in you config.sys. This will accomplish the same thing. TANDY
doctored their versions of MS-DOS to work correctly when a 3.5 in drive was
installed as the A drive. Other versions of MS-DOS including DOS 5.0 do not
have the fix. Is your dos 3.3 from Tandy, I don't think they made a version
3.3 designed for the HX. Tandy ROM BIOS doesn't correctly recognize 3.5 drive.
