Hi, Ben
Well, I've played a little bit with Mlite and sort of stumbled on to its
method for downloading and replying to forum messages. It seems to work
pretty good, I was just online for 2 minutes and grabbed 14 forum messages
and 2 new mail messages. I think I'll register this copy ($55). I downloaded
it from the PC SIG on Delphi. It even has a word processor to compose
replies with that sure beats the Delphi editor.

Hi, Bill
I'm kind of learning as I go here. I am pretty happy with the way Mlite

that in 2 minutes using it I can get what would take an hour to do manually.
Thanks for your reply and I'll talk to you later.

Hi, Sue
Thanks for your suggestions on old forum messages. I'll try that next time,
but I think I'll have to clear out some disk space first, my 40M is just
about full.

I made the changes you outlined for L-scapes and loadpic. L-scapes worked,
but loadpic did not. I just get a blank screen and the machine has to be
rebooted. Maybe later I will have more time to work it out, right now I have
too many things going at once. We just bought an old house that I am
remodeling before we can move in, my wife is 7 months pregnant with our
first baby, (going to have a BOY!) and I am working full time. We are living
in the Sacramento, CA area. I have some personal info available in who-is.

Glad you got Mlite going, Don. It's a popular choice around here for mail
and message handling. Most terminal programs will do the things that Mlite
does, but you have to write (and debug, and debug some more <grin>) script
files to do the job. I get by with script files and a text editor for
reading and replying, using some tricks learned around here to bundle replies
into one file for faster uploading. Almost any offline setup beats spending
time and money in Delphi's editor! Good luck.

Don,

Oops, incomplete fix. I'll work on it some more. (I've already got a
partial answer.) BTW, you don't need to reboot when faced with the blank
screen - do a Ctrl+Break (the Pause key up by the Scroll Lock key). You will
be back in the BASIC editor with the Ok prompt.

Congratulations ahead of time on the coming BOY! We have two adult sons,

You expect to have that house remodeled by the time the baby arrives?
We've been in this place over 15 years, and we're still working on it!

Mlite gathers, compresses and downloads messages with a binary protocol,
like, say, Zmodem? It was my understanding that Mlite just hops from Sig to
Sig and READs NEW just like a script does, in which case it would definitely
not approach the efficiency of a QWK door. I realize that Mlite is likely
the best messaging program for Delphi. I just don't read that many Forums or
post that many messages to justify its purchase. At Canadian rates I don't
usually spend more than 10 hours a month on Delphi anyway. My terminal
program serves me well on the local boards, where I do most of my d/ls. I'm
glad Mlite works well for you and the many others who sing its praises! ;)

Mlite not only has downloading, but you can keep database offerings in a
list for each sig, and it will catalogue them according to type. It can
be periodicly updated. Then you may automaticaly download by just picking
from the list. You can set mlite to download at a low usage time unattended.

It's easy. You can pick a file from the database mlite keeps, or type in the
name of a file, and set mlite to sign on automaticly while you are sleeping.
When you wake up, your file will be waiting for you.

Wow, the message threads can really do some U-turns around here, eh? ;) I
think, without looking back, that my first appearance in this one was to help
someone capture specific blocks of message numbers. Since then I've learned
of QWK on Delphi (sort of), and that Mlite works as well as a QWK door (I'm
not sure about that), and also that Mlite can help manage database listings
and downloading. Thanks anyway for the information but I get by quite
nicely, for now, without Mlite. Perhaps if I were busier around here it
might be a significant time saver but right now I read only a few forums and
download major programs locally. That's due to the *tripled* cost for
calling Delphi from Canada (Tymnet costs $1.80/hr over and above 20/20) *and*
the 25% saving in download time (Tymnet is slow!).

Thanks again and I *will* try Mlite sometime.

It's not a critical problem when the date comes up wrong. If the date comes
up 1/1/1980 reminder utility pukes its database. But, as I've said, I've
established a work-around to alleviate the problem. It's just that it has
always mystified me.

Other than that one little quirk my 1000TX has always worked fine, except for
self induced problems which have at times required a low-level reformat of
my hardcard. Like the time I tried Ross Greenberg's PCMANAGE & COMPRES
utility for compressing files on the hard drive and uncompressing them for
use. In that one case I neglected to _except_ the command processor from
compression and major, MAJOR problems resulted, calling for a hasty,
unscheduled low-level reformat. That wasn't exactly the dumbest thing I ever
did, but it sure wasn't the smartest!

Perhaps you missed some of the earlier posts in this thread. In recent
messages, we were comparing Mlite to a QWK door which gathers posts from many
BBS message areas and delivers them in a compressed binary format (eg. zip).
Mlite reads forums just like any good script in any good comm program and
doesn't really download them. It just READ NEWs them in whatever manner the
user sets up. That's what KC8HN was verifying in his post. Anyway, I'm glad
to meet so many satisfied Mlite users around here!

Hmm, Ben, we may be dealing with semantics here. As far as I see it,
MLITE does download the forum messages, they just don't happen to be zipped.
The posts are up there in Delphi, MLITE collects them for me, and puts them
on my HD. And unless there are a lot of very long messages MLITE doesn't
take any longer than an OLR on a BBS. I have just started using an OLR
which delivers QWK packets to me, it takes me 11 minutes to get 200
messages.

Ok, Bill, no argument here. I was defining a download as a more or less
invisible to the eye transfer but in the true sense, READing messages into a
capture file is an ASCII download that you can see as it happens.

For the record, I don't find capturing Delphi messages terribly slow either,
and that part of this thread only developed after someone mentioned a QWK
program for Delphi. Tonight's capture yielded 68 messages (yes, I counted
'em <g>), a couple of Sig main screens and the top 25 entries in the New DB,
and took 5 minutes. I use QUOTE 3 and LIMIT 15 so a few messages might have
been truncated.

Eleven minutes for a 200 message packet? Must have been some talkative folks
in there! ;) My favourite local board usually has 150-200 messages per day
in the areas I read and the downloads average from 6 to 8 minutes.

There might be an IRQ conflict. I'm no Comm port expert but I'd suggest
looking for IRQ jumpers on your serial card and fax card and ensuring that
they are set to different IRQs. If your modem is internal, I *think* most
internals are permanently set to whatever IRQ is standard to Comm 2. Your
modem and fax software might provide some clues and/or need reconfiguring,
too.

Just found some old paperwork from my serial card. It says Comm 1-IRQ4, Comm
2-IRQ3, Comm 3-IRQ2, and Comm 4-IRQ5.

Hope this is of some use.

     Diskcopy from 720K to 1.44M...How?
     From: DAIRYLADY To: ALL

   I just had a phone call from a friend who has a 1000 RLX/HD with DOS 5.0.
She has only had the computer a short time and has just bought her first
program that didn't come with it. I told her to be sure to make a backup
copy and work from that. It seems the original diskette is 720K, her (only)
floppy drive is 1.44M, and she has a box of high density diskettes for it.
After using the Diskcopy command from the F4 Disk menu, everything seemed to
be proceeding normally as the original diskette was being read, but then when
she inserted the target diskette, she got a message about the diskettes
being incompatible. I had her try to look up in the manual how to copy
across the two formats, but there is no DOS manual per se (only a little
summary card), and she couldn't find anything in the index of the DeskMate
manual. Since I'm using a TL with DOS 3.3, I wasn't much help. Can somebody
explain this to us? Should she keep some 720K diskettes on hand for this
type of thing? Or is there a way for her to reformat one of her diskettes to
720K? Or is there a command switch to allow copying 720K diskettes to 1.44M?
Thank you for any help.

Stan,

I believe it was you, as well as some other members, who have mentioned
a "BASIC Reference Manual" that came with your 1000 SX or TX computer. I
always wondered why I didn't get such a manual with mine - I got a thin book
that really only summarizes DOS and BASIC commands, along with other
information about the computer. Well, I got lucky last week! My favorite
Radio Shack salesperson spotted a dusty, cigarette-smoke smelling box on a
shelf in the back of one of the other RS stores in town and suddenly
realized what she was looking at...*a complete set of the manuals*, including
MS-DOS, BASIC, and Enhancements. Remembering that I'd asked about them
several times in the past, she snapped them up and took them back to her
store, and called me. She sold them to me for $9.98. I've already learned
more from them in one week than I'd learned in a year before that. Tandy
stopped publishing these manuals at the same time they introduced the
1000 TL. Just thought you'd be interested. I expect to have some fun with
these :)

Between the two things, I now understand what you were trying to explain to

Hi Sue. I just tried formatting a 1.44M disk to 720K and it was `no go' so
it would probably be handy to have a few 720s around. They format in 1.44M
drives with the /f:720 parameter but may not read correctly in older 720K
drives as the 1.44 will format them with `skinny' tracks. They'll be fine as
backups for the same computer.

The solution probably lies with Xcopy or plain ol' Copy. I've never used
Xcopy but the manual says that with the /s and /e parameters it will copy
everything from the directory it starts in on down through all full and empty
directories. `Xcopy a: a: /s /e' should do what your friend needs done. I
don't think Xcopy will be bothered by the change in disk capacity, whereas
Diskcopy is made for track by track copying of identical media. If there are
no subdirectories involved, a plain `Copy a:\*.* a:\*.*' should do the job.

If she plans to install this software on the hard drive, a `swapless' method
would be to copy everything to its permanent directory and then Xcopy it out
onto a 1.44M floppy. Well, that's several ways to skin a cat. I hope one of
them works!

All were written by David A. Lien and each was on sale when I picked them up.

Are these among the books you recently got? The Tandy MS-DOS Reference
Manual cost about $30 at the local, friendly RS. I never bought it, although
there were several times when I wished I'd had it.

I'm relating the following because I think you might find it amusing:

Today my son brought home from school the results of a test called "The
Differential Aptitude Tests & Career Interest Inventory". The "Individual
Report" states that his highest interest lies in the areas of:
1) Farming or Livestock Care and 2) Fine Arts ????

Huh!!! For a kid of thirteen??? Living in a crowded suburban development
consisting of 1/4-acre lots???

Ross is a pretty good student, but his all-consuming interests at this time
are: BASEBALL, BASEBALL, and BASEBALL CARDS.

Sue,
Diskcopy only works when copying to identical format diskettes (720k to
720k, or 1.44M to 1.44M). Xcopy (or Copy) will copy files across different
format diskettes.

Would seem as though the simpliest solution would be to copy from the 720K
to the Hard Drive first, and then to the 1.44K. That should work fine
anyway, and you don't have to worry about cross formatting.

Ben,

Now why didn't I think of those things?! I guess I was just too surprised
that no provision was made for the 720K format when so many programs come
that way and the computer, after all, only has *one* disk drive, the 1.44M.
There are no subdirectories on her original diskette, so the copy command
should work just fine. I've used xcopy with switches to copy between
different size diskettes (5 1/4" to 3 1/2") when I bought a program without
noticing that it only came with 5 1/4". I had to go to another friend who
had both size drives to do that one. But I don't know if xcopy is available
in DOS 5.0.

I really want her to get in the habit of working from backups and keeping
write protect windows open on original diskettes. Already today, she would
have mistakenly formatted that diskette if I hadn't opened the window on it
when she brought it by here. She called me later to ask about the message on
screen - that's how I know! (I'm not making fun of her - I'm really
recalling with pain some of my own big blunders soon after getting my
computer.) <sheepish grin>

Baseball definitely pays more, if you can get into it, than either
farming or the fine arts <G>. I always told our sons to pursue careers that
would support them well enough so that they could *afford* to have hobbies
that cost a lot and return little or nothing. I don't want to discount the
value of aptitude testing altogether, but my tests (way back when) showed
that I was not cut out to be a nurse. That, together with the influence
of an old book called Arrowsmith, caused my parents to try to discourage me
from becoming a nurse. The result was several years' delay in getting
started in nursing. Well, I've loved nursing for almost 25 years now. Give
Ross my regards, and keep emphasizing that whatever *he* wants to do, you'll
support it. But always let it be known that you *expect* him to do something
worthwhile. Anyway, that's what worked in our family.

I have all those books, too, but the ones I'm talking about are a
boxed set of three called Tandy 1000 MS-DOS/GW-BASIC Reference Manuals &
Enhancements (Cat. No. 25-1508). If you ever run across any leftovers in a

I made the list, but it's a little different than you requested. It lists
all the programs I can get to load. That's because some of them have changes
other than VGA, such as graceful exits (usually the ESC key or the Q key),
centering of text, or functional changes. Because of this, I couldn't be
sure I would remember just which were changed just for VGA. Besides, if you
see which ones I've typed that still have problems, you might have already
fixed some of them, and share your changes with me, too.

It's a long list, with notes, and some people might not appreciate having
it show up on the Forum, so I'm E-mailing it to you as an ASCII file,
zipped. If anyone else wants it, I'll send it them also. Or, if there is
enough interest, *then* I'll put it on the Forum. If you find a program on
the list for which you'd like the changes, I'll list only the changes for
you, since it might be some kind of copyright violation to send the whole
file.

In the meantime, she has gone off to buy a box of 720K diskettes. That
will be cheaper than tying up more expensive 1.44M diskettes for safety

I seem to remember that if you only have one floppy drive, you can type
copy a:*.* b:*.* and DOS will prompt you to swap diskettes. The same goes
for the xcopy command. (I can no longer test this on my machine, because I
now have two 3 1/2" floppy drives).

directory where the file is that you want copied to the floppy then:

         copy filename.ext a:\filename.ext

or if you want to copy everything out of the directory:

The concensus of opinion on Deskmate with Dos 5.0 is that you need the
Stand alone deskmate program, with the DESK.EXE file. I just went through
that whole process also...for couldn't get the original Deskmate disks

UNLESS....the Basic Deskmate via ROM comes up. In which case, install

think the Deskmate ROM will be available. There are two versions of the RLX.

Driscoll,

As I said, perhaps not too clearly as I'm usually here in the middle of the
night <g>, the *standard* IRQs for those ports are Com2-IRQ3 and Com4-IRQ5.
Those IRQs should go with those Comm ports unless hardware or software is
setup differently. It could be that your fax modem/software tries to use
Com4-IRQ3 and finds IRQ3 in use by the serial board. Both your terminal and
fax software should have changeable IRQ settings in their startup files and
they should match the physical setting of the IRQs. From what I've read,
mostly here, many Com port problems are actually IRQ conflicts.

I don't know if any brands of serial cards or fax modems have hardware IRQ
jumpers. If so, perhaps one of them is set up for the wrong IRQ. My serial
card has no such jumpers, though. Only the Comm port selection is done by
switches on mine, so I guess that also selects those standard physical IRQ
settings. I have seen only one card (Soundblaster) with hardware IRQ
jumpers. You don't, perchance, have a Soundblaster jumpered to IRQ5, do you?

So, if your serial card and term software agree that they're using Com2 and
IRQ3, and your fax modem and its software are set up to use Com4 and IRQ5,
*and* you have no other card that might be using IRQ5, then I think I'm out
of ideas. :( I hope this is a bit clearer, and that it helps.

Hi! Yes, you can format a high density disk to 720K, but you might as well
just buy a box or two of 720 K floppies for this purpose. If the low density
disk is in drive A the command would be FORMAT A: /t:80 /N:9 . DISKCOPY only
works with disks of ide
ntical formats. DOS 5 compounds the problem by automatically checking the
existing disk format before proceding with a new format. For this situation I
find the /U switch (unconditional format) helpful, but as always caution is
needed with the FORMAT com
mand! By the way, one of DOS 5's best features is the online help. If you
can't remember those obscure switches, just type HELP FORMAT at the prompt, and
you get a full listing of options and syntax. Hope this helps.

I just checked my receipt from my original purchase. The DOS manuals
came with MS-DOS 3.3 for which I paid $99 extra. Maybe I wasn't so
lucky! <grin>

Chrisa,

I'm printing out your message and a few of the others in this exchange
for Joan to read. When I give them to her, I know what she's going to do (I
think). She will speed back down to Radio Shack and have a modem installed
in her RLX. She's been fascinated watching the uploads of the dairy reports
to Raleigh (she's our DHIA tester, and became a friend through that), and
asks lots of questions about the Forums here. When she first started asking
a lot of questions about the computer itself, it didn't take too long before
she announced that she had just bought one. I think she's hooked <g>. I
guess I'm going to learn a little about DOS 5.0 through her.

Jax,

You just got it if you are using M-Lite. It will show as SAV00001.BIN on
the **Binary File** screen. I called it PCMBASX.ZIP, but you can give it any
[filename].ZIP you like. Once unzipped, it is pure ASCII, so you can use any
of the usual methods to read it.

Let me know if you find anything you are interested in.

Thanks, now the next question, How about the 3 voice sound, are there any
routines out there for that. I have been a bit more daring lately and I am
willing to try getting at it myself, through machine language routines. But if
I can find one already written, I would use those routines instead.

Are there any routines for tandy sound?

I'm not entirely sure if this is what you're looking for in regard to
three-voice sound, but checkout "POLYPHONIC MUSIC VERSION 1.20" in the
GRAPHICS & SOUND topic here in the databases. It will produce 3-voice music
on PC-Compatibles that, unlike the Tandys, would not ordinarily have that
capability.

No one knows what TE stands for! It does _not_ have "Tandy" in it.

We were all (TE employees) told we would have NO connection with Tandy, other
than as
a vendor to them, and a tenant in their building, after the split. Which
the SEC must still approve.

However, TE starts out in a very good position, with none of Tandy's debt, and
a customer that will still be buying ourproducts for some time to come.

The difference is that we will now be able to sell to other brands.

There is a utility in the Database and I cannot think of the name of
it off hand because I use it on my computer at my office (it has
2 floppy drives whereas my comp. and home only has one.) The utility
will copy a 3.5 HD to 5.25 HD and a 720K to a 360K by reformatting
the latter to conform with the former. So far it has worked well. I
have had to reboot after using it because it leaves my computer thinking
that one drive is the type of the other but that is a minor
inconvenience for the job it performs. Of course xcopy would work
fine if you are going from 5.25 HD to 3.5 HD etc... If I remember to
look tomorrow I will try and post a note with the filename or write
me EMAIL. Good luck!

Have you tried using the setuprlx and reverting back to the bios ROM
for booting... be sure everything is backed up and that you have the setuprlx
ccommand copied to a floppy.. When you revert to the biso bios ROM a boot
floppy is no good. In the setuprlx indicate DESKMATE upon startup. In
the deskmate facade that will come up use the install item under.. one
of the menu bar items at the top.. I can't recall which F# it is with
out going there. See if that solves your problem. I have a 1000RLX HD.
Also, if you get a hold of a non-Tandy DOS 5.0 and want to load DOS high
configure the command to indicate that the machine is a PS2. I know it
works. DOS 5.0 does not have mouse support included but the generic
MOUSE.COM that came with the DOS 3.2 from Tandy works fine. I just copied
the file to my DOS 5.0 directory. Good luck. Let me know how it
turns out!

Better yet... do what I did. I bought a Double Density Disk Converter
for 29.95. It punches the little square hole in the corner of the diskette
which allows your computer to format the diskette to 1.44. It has worked
like a charm everytime. If you are interested write me EMAIL and I will
give you the information as to where I ordered it . Good luck!

You need to copy from the DOS version you received from Tandy or from
Deskmate the setuprlx. I copied that file from Tandy DOS 3.2 to the
generic DOS 5.0 that came from with my Leading Tech Computer. I also
copied the mouse.com from the 3.2 as DOS 5.0 does not come with mouse
support. I know this works because I have done it. The DOS 5.0 does not
access the DESKMATE ROM.. the SETUPRLX command does. It is necessary for
you to have the setuprlx on a floppy because when the computer boots from
ROM you have no way of changing it back with out the setuprlx to access
the setup in the bios rom. Once you have installed the Deskmate.. you can
return to booting from an autoexec.bat file (and config.sys) on your C:
drive. Deskmate comes with a Desk.com which you can use to load deskmate
either by copying the command or by writing a simple batch file which
changes to the Deskmate directory and loads the Desk.com. I have both
versions of Deskmate, the Tandy for the BIOS ROM and the stand alone. You
can work the Deskmate like I have said. Back up your hard drive and
give it a try. Again it is important to have a bootable floppy and a floppy
(can be the same one) with the SETUPRLX on it. That way you don't get
locked out of your computer. I had it happen and it is no fun!
Good luck!
