     tl/2 and 20mb & 52mb IDE drives
     From: MROGERS To: ALL

A friend of mine has a TL/2 with a 20 mb IDE drive. Recently he came upon
a Quantum LPS 52A 52 mb HD and an 8-bit controller. We've been unable to get
the TL/2 to recognize either drive or controller. I believe that somehow the
on board HD controller must be disabled, but I don't know how. The 20 mb is
ck as 25-1047 or 25-1048. I
set the jumpers on the 20mb as the master drive and the 52mb as the slave.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

     From: GSJENKINS To: UMP

I have a Tandy 2500 SX/25, and can recommend their new systems, but
equivalent, or better, systems can be had for less. The processor is
average - 486 SX 25 mhx - the CD-ROM drive is below what is becomming
standard - it is really not the best for multimedia - it has a built in
voice mail/fax/data modem limited to 2400 bps data. You won't be happy with
that speed for long. The monitor is acceptable, the hard drive is
acceptable, but you can get more HD for the price. Check computer shopper
and see what you can get for the $2000 Tandy Sensation price. You may be
able to get a better price than that, too. I love my Tandy, but if I were
doing it again, I would shop around A LOT MORE! Good luck on your
decision-- Tandy does make a fine quality computer.

Stewart...

PS. The MTBF rating (Mean Time Between Failure) of the Tandy CD-ROM drive
is 10, yes TEN hours. Most new CD-ROM drives today are rated at 25,000 to
50,000 hours. Something to think about!

Jim,

From what I've read, the Sensation is a fine piece of equipment. It was
designed for CD-ROM. The only real complaint I've noticed is the size of the
harddrive(106 MB). That is small by today's standards. Many CD programs use
quite a bit of harddrive space when they install all the files necessary to
run the CD-ROM applications... Some dealers will upgrade to a larger
harddrive, others won't.

Driscoll.... I just got back on an was reviewing the old forums and
ran across your port conflics .... Did ya solve it?
I ran into the same type of problem last year. I have a 386 at work
that I use as a "terminal " for a triad mini computer. Unfortunatly,
the terminal uses the serial port, and with the internal modem, there
was no space for the mouse. When I questioned a techhie about adding
another serial board, He stated that although the interrupts were
seperate ... IRQ1-3 and 2-4 are "locked together" so to speak
and that I couldnt use a mouse/terminal/modem combination.

After 3 tries .. I wound up with the final versoin of a switch
to Physicall swap between the terminal and mouse... with 9 sub-relays
to switch between them.

My buddy wasn't very clear about the why of the IRQ conflicts ..
so if anyone has further inf ... I'd like to know more.

Just what did you delete? Were you booting from ROM or the hard drive.
Sounds like you reset your SETUPSL2 to boot from ROM. Make sure that
you IBMBIO.COM, IBMDOS.COM (both hidden files) and Command.Com
in you root directory. Then using SETUPSL2 change to where you boot
from disk versus rom....you may have also deleted all your newer

Hi Stewart,
I am new to this sig. I have been wanting to ask if anyone out there has
installed Dos 6 on an 1000rlx hd besides me? As to your question of why
not to install 6 I can give you several reasons that apply to my Tandy.
First you will loose deskmate 6 will not work with the Rom. No big deal
for me since I was only using the adress pgm and the text files...I had a
seperate word processing pgm and I just switched the files over. I don't mind
having lost deskmate, I just wish I was prepaired for it.
I am having other little problems also. If anyone else out there wants to com-
paire notes I am willing:). I have a lot of questions . I can also say you
MUST read the read.me file before starting as the install.pgm that comes with
dos6 won't work unless you disable the Rom first.

Re: 1000RLX's...

Well, Nanc..we have the same computer, but Having a tough decision
to make regarding Dos 6.0 and DrDos 6.0, I chose to go the DrDos
route, and at the moment, have a compressed drive working with no
problems (after an initial compression disaster which had to be
redone slightly differently).

The loss of the Deskmate Rom is pretty standard following a 5.0
installation, with the easiest solution to get the standalone
deskmate with DESK.EXE. What I had to do.

CAn't really swap notes on the Dos 6.0, but if you have continued
problems with it, and decide to give up, can guarantee DrDos on
the RLX [at least here :)], and it will nearly double your drive.

Part of your message was cut off. Could you tell me if you had to get the

deskmate?
I must say that while I like the parts of Dos6 I have used, the help
screens are great:), I am limited to what I can use. No memmaker, no dos
high(it least I don't seem to be able to ). I have been afraid to try the
double space... people have been complaining about it and I haven't had the
time to back up the drive and fiddle with it. I have also not had time to
try defrag.
I have no plains to install the stand alone deskmate. I can now boot
using the origional 3.whaterver dos disk. This will get me to the
address.pgm which I had been using. The rest of it I won't miss. I am in
fact learning Dos for the first time:) I don't know about you, but I
am learning much more about how the computer really works by having to work
with Dos, then I ever learned using deskmate.

Re: Dos/DrDos and Deskmate ...

One thing about having problems with computers...you learn a lot more
about them in the process.

Not positive about DrDos and the Deskmate Rom. What happened was that
I put Dos 5.0 on a while ago, and then lost the Deskmate Rom. 5.0 gave
me a C and a D drive. Well, I then upgraded to DrDos, which kept the
C and D drives, and so I haven't really found a way to tell if I would
have had the original D-ROM Drive where Deskmate was...IF 5.0 hadn't
made it go poof. Follow that?? :).

Or...would the D / Rom be there if I had installed the DrDos prior to
the 5.0? Don't know. Just know I can't acces the D/Rom now, since a
Regular drive is there.

Surprised you can't get a Dos loaded High with 6.0. Was able to do that
here with 5.0, with no problem. How much memory do you have, and what
are you instructions in your Config statement? Would think it would
be possible.

Like thou, I only use a few features of the Deskmate, now with the DESK.EXE.
Primarily have it for the Sound Files, which is nice. And it's shuts
off the screen and drive well, when it's not in use. I think that's my
MAIN use for it now. :).

At the moment, things are working extremely well with the DrDos, including
the Compression, the Defrag, and the Disk Optimizer, which resulted in a
notable increase in speed. Did learn, however, that can have much
better results by removing everything from the drive, then reformat,
THEN compress it (taking care of Defragging there), instead of compressing
a full disk and defragging, which was disasterous at first here.

I'm sure opinions on this will vary, but you might wish to consider that
option when and if you compress there. :).

I believe the DMP series of printers had one pin out of spec with the
rest of the IBM compatible Centronix port based printers. In other
words, you may need a cable specially for the DMP.

I don't know if Tandy still sells the cable you need, though, since I
think their new printers work properly.

     1000TX Doesn't Like Volume Labels
     From: STANB To: ALL

All,

I've just discovered that my Tandy 1000TX doesn't like having a volume label
on the hard drive!

Approximately once a year a like to freshen the format on my 32Mb Kalok
hardcard with a Seagate controller. I do a full backup of the drive,
followed by a reformat, and a restore from the backup set. This time, when I
got to the high-level format stage of the process, I decided to assign a
volume label to the hardcard. Everything went along fine: I finished the
reformat, did the restore without any hint of a problem.

Just when I had everything buttoned up is when the trouble began --- namely,
I couldn't boot from the hardcard! Every time I tried to boot up my 1000TX
gave me the message:

Bad or Non-System Disk In Drive A:
Replace And Press Any Key When Ready

But there was no diskette in the drive!!! So, out comes the trusty old
EMERGENCY BOOT DISK. I reformatted the hardcard again, starting with the
high-level format, and assigning no volume label. Now, everything works
fine! I can now boot from the hard card, just like a good 1000TX should.

Who would've ever thought that assigning a volume label to a hard drive
would lead to such a seemingly unrelated problem! Has anyone else here
experienced such spooky behavior with their Tandy machines? I'd be
interested in hearing about such experiences.

Stan

That's really unusual. I have a Tandy 1000SX that has a miniscribe hard
card. It has a volume label and boots just fine.

Weirdness!

     From: STANB To: SWITCHTECH

Weirdness is right. If I responded to the "Bad or Non-System Disk" message
by inserting a regular formatted diskette, it repeated the message just as
one would expect. When I inserted my handy, dandy Emergency Boot Disk, it
booted up fine (from the boot disk in Drive A:, of course). Consequently, i
made up another boot disk, copied my AUTOEXEC.bat & CONFIG.sys files from
Drive C: to it, and my family and I have been using that for the several
days while I tracked down the source of the problem.

I bought a can of compressed air at RS and blew the dust out of the drive.
Then I opened up the CPU and reseated the floppy drive cables. All this
was to no avail. I had just about concluded that I'd have to buy a new
floppy drive, when I connected the occurrence of the problem with the
assigning a volume label to the hardcard. I really didn't think there could
be any possible causal relationship between the two, but I figured I'd
reformat the hardcard again, this time without the volume label, and see
what happens. And, as I said in my first message, it solved the problem.

WEIRD IS DEFINITELY THE WORD. These "kinda-compatible" Tandys definitely
are a puzzlement at times!

Re: Tandy Salesmen...

Don't know if they go out of their way to mislead, or they simply don't
know any better. :).

What I'm rather sure of is that it's not too often you discover a
salesman with the "Miracle on 34th Street" Santa CLaus spirit, of sending
people to other stores for products.

And like so many other sales people of technical products, it's rare
to find one with good technical expertise. I think they're taught to
sell the products, not to understand them. :).

M.

Noting an exception to the above...one name/unmentioned salesman at the
Shack did suggest I buy a Zoom 14.4 Modem at a different store for about
200 bucks, instead of theirs for considerably higher price. I think if
they made their prices more competive, the increased sales might actually
increase their profit margin in the long run...but maybe they don't
want increased sales. It's a business philosophy.

"Fire,"

I don't think there is a compatibility problem with the DMP-132 and
IBM-type cables. I recently bought an A/B data switch so I could connect two
Tandy printers to my 1000 TL. I have IBM-type cables running from the data
switch to each printer, one of which is a DMP-132. The card-edge connector
to IBM-connector cable runs from the computer to the data switch. The
IBM-to-IBM cables were not purchased from Radio Shack and they work just
fine.

I wonder if you might have the DMP-132's DIP switches set in Tandy mode
and now need to change to IBM mode. The DIP switches, as you are looking at
the back of the printer should be set as follows: _ _ - - _ _ _ _ - _
(Actually, 1-7 can be set either up or down; see page 23 in the printer
manual, if you have it).

Sure hope this is all that's needed.

Stan,

That is really strange. What happens if you try to assign a volume label
later - i.e., not during the reformatting procedure? My 1000 TL shouldn't be
so different from your TX, and I have assigned, deleted, and reassigned,
volume labels on several different drives - and with two different hard
cards - at will without problems. I like volume labels because they add a
layer of protection between stupid-operator error and the dreaded format c:

Mark,
I tried what you suggested the other night and it worked!!!!! Thank you
so much. After we talked I went back to the ____ _____ dos Manual and
started looking again. Sure enough it was there. machine:2 The config.sys
looks like this now C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS /A20:ON /CPUCLOCK:ON /MACHINE:2 /V
                      DOS=HIGH
                      DEVICE=C:\DOS\SMARTDRV.EXE
FOLLOWED BY THE REST OF THE MOUSE ECT. COMMANDS
I must admit that when I looked at the help screens that the info I needed
was there. I think the problem was that Tandy was not spacifically on their
list. To my way of thinking that means I don't need to do what ever they
are talking about. I figured this would be so since the manual spacifically
says that the install process is supposed to set it up automatically:).
Psst...never trust that line in the manual:)
I also now have a D: drive listed (8K) no files listed as being in it.
I must say that I am very pleased I now have dos high the executable pgm
size is up to 602K which is better then before when it was at 557K. I am
still not sure I understand this. The mem comand is giving me the list
saying that there is 384K total.... 64K used ... .320K free. Yet it is
saying that the largest executable program size is 602K which is the amount
of conventional memory. SO what is it going to do with that 320 K that is
free in extended memory?
I haven't had a chance to list that program we were talking about in the
autoexec.bat to see if it will work, but i think it might it meeds 512K of
ram I will have to check and see how much the word processing pgm needs. It
would be nice if they could be used together:) as they are supposed to be.
I will let you know if it works...thanks again.

You will get that msg anytime you attempt to boot from a disk that
doesn't have the system installed, even a hard drive. It sounds as if when
you used the FORMAT command you used the /V switch for the volume label but
forgot the /S switch to install the system. The proper command should be

Do you understand DOS systems. Pgms for DOS are written to work in base
memory. Only specific programs that have capability of utilizing XMS will
use that memory. Even if you have 3 meg RAM XMS but don't have enough base
RAM DOS pgms will not work... LOL.

Ya...I had a feeling that /machine = 2 instruction would work there,
considering we have the same machines. :). Actually that was the first
time I've seen the /A20=ON parameter...which seems to work by default
anyway. But then, I never had a DOS 5.0 documentation manual anyway, or
a 6.0.

The "automatic" Config/setup that you were talking about I would assume is
about the same that this DrDos has...but it doesn't put some of those
defaults into the Config.sys. Apparently, it doesn't do a 100% job of
detecting what kind of machine we have here. I learned about the Machine/2
from someone else on Forum.

Your 602K looks about right for that setup of Dos 6.0 high. Your
puzzlement over the extended memory available of 320K means your about
to discover basically the same thing that I did. You can use that memory
for just about nothing, from what I've seen. I know the Video memory
goes up there, but there's apparently no way to get the Mouse or any
other program up there, due to the machine's limitations. Karijackson
has posted numerous messages about this on the PC/COM forum.

Can get a few buffers up there, I believe, but if you manage to use
that memory for anything else, lemme know, K???? :). Basically you're
gonna get Dos up there, and that's about it, and I eagerly await a
correction on that statement. I realize you're wondering WHY you can't
use the total 1 MEG...but at least 250K of it is for Video Ram, so you
actually are using much of it, if I understand this correctly.

Due to the Chip in this machine, and our lack of what's called "Shadow
Ram", this is the best we can do, I believe, although some programs
may actually use that memory, if they program says it will use Extended
Memory. Depends on the program.

Ok, here's my plea. Right now I only have the COMM driver on this model 4 and
it's not good for d/l'ing software. What I'm looking for is either:

a) If someone has a terminal program that does either VT100 or ANSI emulation
for the Model 4 I'd appreciate if you could snail it to me.

b) I remember that on the Model 1 & 3 the video was memory mapped
and the RS232 was adrr'd via OUT commands. The Model 4 seems to take a
different approach so I'd need to know:

Where is the video driver?

Where is the RS232 Port?

That's about it really. The Z80 part I can handle. But I'll be damned,
they've locked just about everything down on the Model 4.

BTW, I'd prefer method "a" since it'd be lots faster (this is a

I just thought I'd share with anybody who is interested...

I bought a copy of Print Chief the last time I was in town. It is a very
small printer control program that works with all models of Tandy dot matrix
printers. During installation, it is tailored to your model. It works both
in and out of DeskMate, too. I found the documentation rather convoluted,
making it seem harder than it is, and they completely overlooked one of the
easier methods of setting up the program, but it really works great! I
chased some pretty fancy fonts out of both my DMP-240 and my old DMP-132 (in
fact, you wouldn't guess a 132 did it) with this program. Then I scrunched a
printout from a Lotus Spreadsheet for DeskMate file onto two sheets of
paper, where it used to take 3 1/2 widths of 8 1/2 x 11 paper and spill onto
extra sheets at the bottom.

If you have a Tandy printer, this one is worth the money, I think.

No. I don't think it's as simple as that. On my 1000TX I'm running DOS3.2.
If after formatting my hard drive without the /V parameter everything is
fine. And, I can add the volume label, after formatting, successfully using
the DOS LABEL command. This causes no problem. HOWEVER, if I then use a
file sort utility like Nortons or Professional Master Keys (PMK) and move the
volume label above (or before) the two system hidden files, then the problem
also arises (C: drive won't boot; gives error message "Bad Or Non-System
Disk, ... Etc.). If I then move the label below the two system hidden files,
everything is fine.

In short, I now know how to avoid the trouble, but I don't fully understand
why. Maybe I'll do some more experimenting this weekend, but I'm not sure I
really want to try. I think that by using the command

             FORMAT C: /S/V

my Tandy DOS3.2 may be putting the volume label where the one or both two
system hidden files _MUST_ be placed, physically, on the Hard Drive for a
successful boot, and that the error message, "Bad or Non-System ... "
message is a somewhat random consequence.

volume label follows the two boot files: IO.SYS and MSDOS.SYS. I'm not

According to a book that I have you can load mouse High using the

parameter is and have not had a chance to try this without the /y yet but I
intend to do so. I will let you know what happens:) The book also talks
about loading memory-resident programs into the upper memory area. It gives
the following syntax : LH DRIVE:\DIRECTORY\FILENAME.EXT /PARAMETER
I have not tried this with anything either. The book is a dos 6 book so I
couldn't say if this will work for Dr Dos.
If these thing do not work, I wonder about using the RamDrive and trying

John,

I don't have Norton's. Instead, I've been using Professional Master Keys
(the poor man's Norton) File Sort (FS.EXE) utility.

Try something! Make sure you have an Emergency Boot Disk at hand, and use
Norton's Directory Sort utility, or whatever it's called, to move the
Volume Label above the two system hidden files. Reboot, and let me know what
happens. Please --- I would be very interested in the result? I asked our
PC wizard at work to try the same thing, but he respectfully refused.

*Is there no one with a sense of adventure in the PC world? Come on --- it
only hurts for a little while if your system gets messed up! You can always
set things straight if you have your boot floppy handy.* <GRIN>

Nanc, the /y parameter for loading the mouse high is specific to version 6.0
of the Microsoft Mouse Driver, I think. Dos 6.0 comes with version 8.20a of

I tried to Directory Sort the files, but they remain hidden from view
even after UnHiding them and UnSysteming them. Weird that Norton
wouldn't rearrange them. One more thing to try - renaming them!

Yup, sure enough, move the files around and... "the diska, she won'ta

Very interesting. I always thought that the system just looked at the
boot sector of the drive and booted. I guess it looks into the Root
Directory first, to make sure the files are there, before bothering to
check the Boot sector.

Re: RamDrive...

Although I do have the DrDos system, was quite succesfully in setting
up a RamDrive, (called basically an F: drive), which uses the Extended
Memory on this system. Can put any files up to about 250 K in there,
which basically operates as a separate Drive in Memory. Useful for
increasing speed for accessing whatever's in there, since it's already
in Memory.

So far, this is the best use I've found for our above 640K memory. I
would think that it may also work on your Dos 6.0 there, as well.

Just not sure what I'm gonna do with that F Drive of 250K yet, but it's
about 250 more K that I had before using the RamDisk. :).

Mark,
Ok, glad to know it was not a silly idea. Only 250k ...hmmm... not much
there, well my main concern is this programI have called writers tool kit.
It has been giving me fits. It uses 512K of Ram and 7.3MB of disk
space when fully loaded. It also uses 10 K of Ram for the memory resident
protion regardless of the units installed. I also have a work processing
program this tool kit is suposed to work within. It requires 640K.
I finally, after much juggling, got the tool kit to work within the word
processor. Though it runs as sloggy as baked beans. I have to press hot key
combo's 2 or 3 times to get them to work. The pgm will still not work with
dos edit or within mlite editor, even if the tool kit is loaded. Neither
program seems to reconize the hot key combo's I need to call the screens.
My main interest in the high memory area was to get these programs
working together as they should. Neither mlite or dos edit has a spell
checker, the tool kit and my word processor both do. Right now if I want to
spell check something before I send it I have to save it to a file, send it
to the word processor, spell check it, write it to ascii and send it
back.urrrrrrrrrrrrrrr The tool kit is supposed to work within any word
processing pgm. or from any where for that matter once loaded. The question
here is do you think it will be able to work within either of these editors,
or am I waisting my time? Could I find a way to use that 250K, with or
without the ram drive to speed up the tool kit or make these programs work
better together? Is it possible that the hot key combo of the various pgm
are in conflict and that is why they will not work? Could dos key be loaded
high and could I then use it to re-write all the key combo's so they are
consistant? Could the 10K memory resident protion of the tool kit be loaded
high along with any of the word processor portions which are resident when
it is in use . If any of this could be done would it help? Remember I know
next to nothing about how any of this stuff really works. All I want to do
is write and get at what I need when I need it without having to go through
contortions:)

Any advice you could give would be appreciated.

RE: DrDos...

There is a parallel to the PS2 switch in DrDos (or so I learned from
someone here on PC/Forum).

Don't know if you're using a compressed drive, or not, and if so, you
can put this in your DConfig.sys file, otherwise, put in in your Config.
sys:

     DEVICE = HIDOS.SYS /GATEA20=PS2 /B=AUTO
     HIDOS=ON

Actually, don't think the HIDOS matters, since it's gonna default to
that I believe, and /B=FFFF will probably have the same result. Using
that, it will put the Dos Kernal of about 38K in High Memory, leaving
about 60-80 of DrDos in main memory. This isn't as effective as Dos 5.0
was, but I think it's the best that can be done, from what I've discovered
so far.

Far better than not having that 38K up there, and can make the difference
between some programs running or not running.

You should be able to get at least 550K of usable Conv. mem, depending
how how many buffers you have, etc., and what kind of Optimatiztion
features you're using.

Lemme know what happens with that. :).

Re: Writer's Tool Kit...

Sounds like your trying to really stretch the machine to the limit here
with that program. I gather what you're trying to do is use it as a
TSR, so that it will pop up and Spell check any program in the world.

Nifty idea. :). Never actually tried that myself.

First, the questions about loading various programs in that Expanded
memory. Dos isn't going to be able to do it...so unless the program
itself specifically implements the usage of this expanded memory, the
memory won't do any good, and none of the Loadhigh instructions will
function on this machine, from what I've seen. (Again, gladly await
corrections on that).

The Ram Disk can be used to put whatever you want up to 250K right onto
say, an "F" disk, which is in memory. Doesn't seem to be any restrictions
on this. If there's a case where you're continually loading the same
program or data from a Drive, it would be expedient to put it on the
Ram Disk. (Just found out about this Disk myself...so not an expert
on it...but that's where it seems practical. I think it would be great
for anyone with a 2MEG or above system...could really speed up a few
programs).

Whether your WRiter's Tool Kit could make use of it...well...:)...it
sounds too sophisticated for me to attempt an answer having never run
the program, but you can put any part of it less that 250 K on the
Ram Disk...and that may speed something up. :). But keep in mind that
on a RamDisk...to execute it...it still has to COPY from the Ram Disk
directly to Conventional Memory....so you're NOT getting more executable
area...just STORAGE in Expanded memory.

Have noticed a certain Flakiness on occasion with Hot Keys with this
machine also. Most programs give an option of altering the Keys, so if
the specified one doesn't work, you might wish to try another one, until
you get a Bingo there (when and if). Then again, when running some
applications Hot Keys simply won't function whatsoever, so it's trial
and error. (Don't think many Hot Keys will work on Geoworks, for
instance, but have only tried a few).

You probably don't want to give up that Writer's tool kit, but if you
can't get it to do what you want with this "spell checking anything in
the world" goal, what probably would work is a Task Switching program,
which will let you say copy whatever you want from Mlite, or whatever,
suspend the task, copy the data into a word processor, spell check it,
and bring it back to the original program modified.

I think I'd be able to do that here now..but that's a lot tougher going
than your Pop Up Spell Checker...but it was just a silly observation
on my part that would probably work. :).

Re: Hidos...

Hm. First thing to check is that you've got the Syntax right there on
the parameter. It definately reads:

    DEVICE = HIDOS.SYS /GATEA20=PS2 /B=AUTO

with a ZERO after the 2, and not an "OH", correct?

There are different versions of the RLX, (at least 2), but I've seen
the PS2 switch on Dos 5.0 work on either machine, and even if yours is
different than mine, think this would work on that basis.

Also might want to post the exact error message, or is it saying nothing
more than Lousy Parameter?

Also, did you let the Setup program put the Hidos instruction in, or
did you place it there yourself, in case the location of the instruction
may be causing a conflict with some other one.

Could always post the first few instructions of your Config.sys up
to that point, if you wish.

This should work. :).

Regarding the pending sale to AST, Tandy is getting out of the computer
business completely. The following is offered for more detail:
Radio Shack owner Tandy Corp says it is selling its personal
computer division to AST Research Inc--marking the end of Tandy's long
effort to compete in the business.

Tandy says it is abandoning its earlier-announced plans to create a
spinoff from its PC manufacturing units and will instead sell them off.

Pretty definite.

users of those computers). Many of our readers are first-time computer
owners of brands ranging from A to Z, and from low- to high-end (which
must be nice, we -- who started out with machines that didn't even have
hard drives -- think!), and they want to know what in the world they can
 *do* with these things.
On the other hand, we have no plans to simply drop our support for
Tandy owners, either -- we still have a lot of Tandy 1000 and DeskMate
users among our readership, too. Our Q&A columns will continue to answer
their questions, for instance, and we're working right now on a "Focus On"
featuring programs that take advantage of the 1000's 16-color graphics
 capabilities.
So don't worry, we're staying right here!

Carriage returns might not have fixed your message, Doug. Delphi's editor
does its own word wrapping, ignoring your linefeeds, unless you use dot
commands (.lt &.el) or start each line with a space. When you want text to
look the same here as it does in your editor, just put .lt on a line of its
own above the text in question and .el, also on a line of its own, after said
text. The .el returns formatting control to Delphi's editor and is not
strictly necessary, as the .lt (literal) ends when you exit that message.

A space at the start of
 each line works, too!

Kevin,

Yes --- I believe PCM Magazine could drop the "Tandy" from the front cover
and we'd never spot the difference. At least, I hope that that's all this
change will mean to Falsoft.

Sue,

Thank you for filling us in, without waiting to do it while we bite our
nails down to nubbins <g>. Now that we know PCM won't forget Tandy owners,
we'd sure appreciate it if you'd share any word about the direction this AST
Research plans to take, as you might hear it.

Hi, Sue -- I sure will. (So fear not for future nubbins! (-: )
I suspect none of this will take place overnight, in any case, and AST

        Stay tuned . . . . ----- (the other) Sue

     Look what I did, now!
     From: DBOULEY To: ALL

 Uh, oh...
 I did a baaad thing...
I was messing with my 1000rlx and got stuck.

I have DRDOS 6.0 loaded with SSTOR 2.0, and attempted to load
Deskmate with the ROM option in SETUPRLX, and then run it
from floppies (I don't really know why). This actually worked
before, but this time, maybe because I shrunk the physical disk
space, the ROM DOS said "NOT".

It appears that the ROM chip can't find what it needs, and the
DRDOS stuff on the physical drive can't find itself, either. I get
a slew of "unrecognized command in config.sys" errors and a
"bad or missing command interpreter" error.

I am unable to run a boot floppy from the A drive, cause the
1000 isn't reading it, as far as I can tell. I assume that it
is only attempting to boot from ROM, and is ignoring anything
 in the A drive.

 My questions:
        1. Can I turn off the ROM boot option somehow, even though
I can't get to SETUPRLX to run it. -or-
        2. Can I force a boot from A somehow? At this point, I'd even
consider starting from a reformat, except that I can't do
           that either.
        3. Why do I do this stuff to myself? Oh, well, somebody
remarked that you learn so much more by messing things up.
I should be a pro someday soon! ;-(

At least I know how to format my messages now, thanks to Ben...

DAIRYLADY,

At work our branch has an AST LapTop. It's for use by individuals while on
Travel Duty, or for use while observing field tests. During the short time
that I've been its custodian it's been no trouble. Seems like a very nice
little '386!

On the other hand, the division I left two years ago has two Grid LapTops.
One of them, I understand, just died. To be fair, though, it could've been
the result of mis-handling.

Re: 1000RLX...

Sorry about the delay in replying to your config.sys posting. Was out of
town for 5 days (Chicago), and just got back. Printed out your message,
and take a look at it a bit later....but just wanted to let ya know
why the delay.

I see you used multiple Configurations there. Was thinking about
implementing the same thing here to get an option of Maximum memory
available, etc, so at worse case, even if we can't get that Hidos working
there, I'll have a nice framework on implementing multiple configs, eh???
:).

I've made the same mistake in the past with those carriage returns. I'll
give it a shot to see if I can figure it out without you reposting there.
