Greg,

I'm sorry to take so long in replying to thank you for the little batch
file. I've been painting and redecorating a room in anticipation of my
mother's visit for her 80th birthday in October. Since I've never learned
how to use the FOR command, I could see that I'd have to spend a little
learning time, so I put it on the back burner for a while. All the same, I
should have acknowledged your message. So, even though I haven't studied it
yet, I want to thank you anyway.

     IBM disk in Tandy
     From: THERMOS To: ANYONE (NR)

At work we have IBM 286 PC's. I own a Tandy 425SX. I usually carry a
formatted disk from home to save my work and to complete it at home. This
week, I used 4 disks which belonged to my office. When I tried to finish my
work at home, I placed the disk into the computer using Windows 3.1 and I got
the message that the disks were not formatted. I went to DOS and got the
message Error reading drive A Abort, Retry, Fail. I thought there was a
major problem. When I went back to the office, the disks worked fine. A
coworker tried to explain to me that although my Tandy is IBM compatable,
IBM is not Tandy compatable and that I would have to save my work on the
IBM's on Tandy formatted disks in order to use them. Can this be? Is there
another way to access those disks? Has anyone else had this problem????

I am uploading a TRS-80 model 1 emulator.  It is pretty good;
comes complete with floppy disk emulation and everything. You will
need to get a copy of the ROM's (which can also be had off the
internet... see the documentation.) They can also be xfer'd
from your model 1 to your MS-DOS machine. Galaxy Invasion evens

     From: MISAL To: THERMOS

The format of diskettes on the Tandy and IBM *is* compatible. There are two
possibilities that would cause your problem.

One of the drives is not "aligned correctly." The head may not "write" to
the track as it should -- causing the other drive to miss the information
when it tries to read it.

Take a good look at the diskettes you are using. Is there a square hole in
"each" top corner? If not, this could also cause a problem. Some disk drives,
called smart drives, will not read the disk unless it has "both" of these
square holes in the corners.

     From: ANTHONYKODIS To: THERMOS

Thermos,
Let's see here (thinking in ASCII)... The 425sx has high density drives,
right? The 286 at work has inferior double density drives, presumably. To
read the disk on a high density drive it will have to be formatted in a high
density drive.
The problem isn't that IBM isn't Tandy compatible, but that IBM isn't
IBM compatible.

So yes, it appears that if you want to read your disks on your home
computer, you will have to format them on your home computer.

No problem at all, Sue. The general syntax of the FOR command is:

        FOR <environment variable> IN (file list) DO <command line>

Thus in a batch file you could use something like:

        FOR %TEMP IN (1 2 3 4 5) DO ECHO %TEMP

and it would echo 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 on separate lines. It's fairly simple
once you've discovered its little nuances. Oh, and the file list enclosed
in parantheses obviously don't have to be files. If you do use wildcards,
the wildcards are expanded to individual files before interpretation.

Also, keep in mind that many of the Model II and IV programs will run on the

Tom,

I dug out the two oldest Tandy catalogs I happen to have, a 1987 software
catalog and a 1989 computer catalog. The 1989 catalog lists the Model 4D
(26-1070) as having a 4MHz Z-80A processor, 14K ROM, and 64K RAM "expandable
to 128K." It included DeskMate (not the same DeskMate you may know from
later-model Tandy computers), Microsoft 5.0 BASIC, and ran "most TRSDOS and
LDOS software designed for the Model 4 and 4P." According to the 1987
catalog, the Model 4 was capable of running the CP/M or TRSDOS 6 operating
systems. This computer was a descendant of a family of Tandy computers that
originated long before the IBM PC was introduced (my husband and I
considered buying a Model III in April 1982). So, while you might have some
fun with it, you probably will not find it very versatile now, unless she
bought it with some of the old software that ran on it. There might also be
some stuff you can download from the Crossfire topic of the PC SIG database
here that will run on it, but you'd have to just browse the database to find
out. I hope this is the kind of information you were looking for. Maybe
somebody else has had some first-hand experience with the Model 4.

Hi again, Greg!

OK, now that I've got it, I figured out that I'd rather use it as a batch
*command* than as a batch file - otherwise I'd be continually editing the
batch file to insert the date/time parameters. The command goes like this:

   FOR %P IN (*.DOC) DO STAMP %P 04-01-93 20:00:00
or
   FOR %P IN (0993DHI?.RPT) DO STAMP %P 09-22-93 14:00:00

or whatever. Works just the way I wanted it to. I read the part about the
FOR command in Lien's and Wolverton's books, along with your instructions,
and it finally gelled. Thanks again.

Hi, Stan,

I typed in another PCM program a few evenings ago - MATH.BAS, from the
current issue. For some reason, QuickBASIC code always seems to be faster
and easier to type than GW-BASIC. On the other hand, most of the programmers
submitting code for QuickBASIC don't seem to take advantage of the really
good graphics screen modes the way the fellows who used to write programs in
the GW-BASIC "Tandy modes" did. (ATLANTIS.BAS was the one exception I can
think of). Anyway, I'm sure glad PCM plans to emphasize program listings
more in coming issues.

Sue,

Speaking of the current issue of PCM, did you see ad from Micro Systems on
page 15? I've bought a lot of stuff from them over the years for my 1000TX
and I've always been very pleased with their service. Now, I swore I wasn't
going to put any more money into this old 1000TX, but after seeing the '386
and '486 CPU modules in their latest ad I feel myself backsliding :-) I'm
not ready to upgrade my PC just yet, and I kinda like my Tandy so I just
might go for the '486 module. I'm giving it some serious thought. A thread
has started on these modules. I'm going to follow it for some feedback on
these things.

Stan,

No, I really hadn't paid any attention to the ad until I read your note.
After DCS came out with the motherboard swap and PCM listed the pros and
cons of such a swap, I kind of decided I wasn't ready to deal with the cons.
Seemed to do away with all the things that make Tandy computers unique. And
the price was halfway to a new computer. But these Micro Systems modules
look interesting, don't they? I wonder what you have to give up that makes a
Tandy a Tandy... I'd like to see a review on those, too. Also that book of
tech notes looks worthwhile. Like you, I thought I'd "maxxed out" this TL,
and wasn't planning to spend any more money on it - although I'd never part
with it, even if I got a new computer. Now here's something else to
consider! What fun <BG>.

MISAL has advised me against those modules. He has an acquaintance who tried
one and was disappointed with it in terms of the money paid for the module in
view of the little performance improvement. So, I guess I'll just have to be
satisfied with what I've got.

Besides, in about a year my daughter will be going off to college. So, I
might give her this 1000TX and buy myself a '486 machine (if I've got any
money left after paying her tuition).

A few other alternatives you might consider:

DCS Industries can swap the existing motherboard in your Tandy 1000 with a
386 or 486 motherboard. You keep the existing case, power supply and
peripherals.

Computer Mechanix has a trade-in offer for Tandy computer owners. You send
your Tandy to Computer Mechanix, and the put all of your peripherals into
a 386 or 486 box.

The nice advantage with the Computer Mechanix deal is that you practically
get a new computer with more slots, more drive bays, etc. and you can get
either a desktop, mini tower, or full tower case.

HD Controller for Tandy 1000 SL
     From: WESF To: ALL

I have a Tandy 1000 SL, and want to add a hard disk drive. After looking
through the latest Computer Shopper, I found a Seagate HD, model ST-351A/X.
This seems to be a good possibility, but my problem is finding a controller
for a reasonable price. I know I can get one from Tandy for $99.95 (on sale),
but I would like to find one for less. Does anyone know where I can find one?
I would appreciate the help, as I have very few possibilities as to where to
get one.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Stan,

If all goes according to the way things usually do, she'll make off with
the 486 and you'll still have the TX <BG>. Aren't you glad you're comfortable
with it?

VB-Pro 3.0 is my choice. I own it. It is much easier to build interfaces
with VB than TurboPascal.
