For a number of years, I used a Paradise Basic EGA Card with my XT and
a CGA monitor. It allowed Many EGA programs to be displayed on a CGA monitor
(by omitting some lines I believed). The CGA/EGA standards both use a 9 pin
connector, so that is not an issue. Display modes are set via dip switches
or via software (for after boot up changes). Selections included CGA, EGA,
EGA on a CGA monitor, and some mono types. I believe the card only costs
$30 something. Hope this helps. Mike V.

REading some past messages. Yours prompted me to look at the instructions for
my winchester RLL controller. I have a Tandy 1000A, and it required IRQ5 in-

specifically made for the 1000, I was out of luck. I didn't know of a bios

If you cannot find a copy of the manual, or get it from Paradise Systems:

I think my hard drive on 3000HD is RLL also. I was hoping it WAS MFM, but

Minimum Specifications for Multimedia PCs (MPC 1)

Processor: 10MHz 80286
RAM: 2MB
Storage: 30MB hard drive, 3-1/2" 1.44MB floppy drive, 150kB/sec CD-ROM
Input: 101-key keyboard, mouse, joystick, microphone
Video: VGA (640x480x256 preferred)
Audio: The following addressable under Windows:
CD audio (Red Book -audio CD)
  MIDI synthesis
  MIDI port in/out
  stereo 16-bit DAC's
digital mixer for CD audio, PCM waveform (.wav), and synthesizer
DOS: 3.3 w/CD-ROM extensions
GUI: Windows 3.0 w/Multimedia Extensions (equivalent to Win 3.1)

All in all, can't be done with a TX, and can't be done with a TL. (Which
at least has some sound support built in.) Most of the stuff can be
added, but the 2MB RAM and Windows are the biggies - lots of people run
"multimedia" programs without the other junk. Cheaper when all is said
and done to get a new computer. The MPC 2 spec is even more stringent.

You can do a lot of things with the TX with sound and video with the
right hardware/software, but 2MB RAM you probably can't get (though I'm
waiting for a library book that might shed some light on the subject).

Hi, Wes!

Well, to begin with the MPC spec calls for at least a 386 processor and
Windows 3 - which lets the 1000TX out. The 1000TX is an 80286 with 640K
memory. HOWEVER, it can still be upgraded to use VGA, a sound card and
speakers, and a CD-ROM drive, which would make it on.

Hi, again! (What's your real first name?)

Call DCS Industries at 800-537-3539. They have IDE drives mounted on a
card with a 16-bit to 8-bit conversion controller which works beautifully in
the 8-bit expansion slots in our Tandy 1000TXs and TLs. The drives come in a
variety of sizes. I bought 85 megs. The speed of the IDE drive, when
compared to the old Tandy MFM 20-megger that I first had, is unbelieveable.

This, combined with two other upgrades, will make you very satisfied with
your TX for a long time to come. Those two items are an 80287 math
coprocessor and a VGA monitor. I have a Tandy VGM-441, which is capable of
Super VGA modes (would require a 16-bit machine to take advantage of them),
but it is .28 dot pitch and very easy on the eyes. I think the current
equivalent model is something like VGM-450. The Radio Shack catalog number
for the math coprocessor 900-2585 and the DCS catalog number is DCS3270. Of
course, the VGA monitor is something you can use later if you ever do decide
to buy a new machine. VGA in the TL and TX require the 256K (that's all
you can use with 8-bit slots) VGA adaptor card. This takes all the video out
of your 640K base memory and makes it available for programs, thereby
speeding up the overall performance of the computer.

   Hope this helps. :-)

Why don't you just plan on doing it yourself? That's what most of us do.
PCs are not your usual "no user-serviceable parts inside" kind of electronic
equipment. Everybody quakes in their boots the first time they take the

Now, I didn't know you had hopes of using a hand scanner and OCR

mega-memory and mega-bucks with that :-( Is this going to be for
professional use? or hobby? I remember when I thought that would just be a
matter of plugging a little thing in the back of the machine - then I
started reading and checking around. Result: no hand scanner.

                         Info: 717-528-8493

They cater to Tandy PCs. I've bought virtually all of my upgrade hardware
for my 1000TX from them ever since they were located in Glen Burnie. Talk
to Dave, the tech support person. They'll give you good advice. They'll
gladly sell you upgrade hardware, but it's been my experience that they
won't sell you something you can't use or is of doubtful utility.

My 1000TX as purchased was a Floppy only system. To it I added: 32Mb hard
card, 2nd floppy drive, 2400 baud Modem, 2Mb EMS board, and lastly a VGA
combo. After a few years I could just about work on the innards blindfolded.
The 1000TX still gives good service. My daughter is using it at college.
Along with your Email message the other night I received a note from her
through her school's Internet connection.

Hope this helps.

Hi, Frank!

Re: drive partitions

No, not the limitation of the BIOS. It's the limitation of the DOS
version. Starting with DOS 4, one could have the entire hard drive in one
partition. Prior to DOS 4, the size limitation per partition was 32 megs. I
still run 3.30 on my Tandy 1000TL with an 85-meg hard drive. I have two
32-meg partitions and one of about 10 or 11 megs. With the ability to start
programs with batch files from the Desktop in DeskMate, I hardly notice that
different programs are in different partitions. In fact, there are *some*
advantages to partitions. You can optimize only one at a time, thereby
saving time. I group all my most frequently used programs in drive c: (of
course!) and that is the only drive that needs regular optimizing treatment.

ould still need to have it in 32 or so meg
chunks. I didn't understand why, but he seemed adamant that this was the case.

She wants to run Word Perfect 5.x or 6.x (can't remember).

Thanks for any help.

This may be a little late but I'll add my $.002 worth.
I WORK for Radio Schack so if you still need info let me know.
If you have a complaint about a store, every store has a display in it
with the regional manager's phone number. simply pick up his card and call.
He's your best bet to solve you situation.

BTW Not ALL Radio Schacks give that bad service

     Upgrading my 2500XL
     From: IOLE To: ALL

Hello, hello other Tandyites. A question for an answer.

I am the happy owner of a hand-me-down 2500xl (my father is very nice!) and I
am curious to if it is possible to upgrade this machine beyond it's blazzin'
10mhz. (i.e. swap out the motherboard, run nitro instead of electircity)

If anyone out there knows of such wonderful tricks, please drop a line...
.. my poor baby is choking!!!

You can do one of two things: (1) upgrade the processor, or (2) replace
the motherboard. (1) is easier and perhaps cheaper, (2) gives better
results. If you want to upgrade the processor, there are double-clocked
386 and 486 modules available (price: $179-299). The processor runs
internally at 20MHz, externally at 10MHz.

Depending on what kind of software you run, a math coprocessor may be
helpful (price: $49-79).

RE: What are the Tandy Usenet group name (Re: Msg 23374)
     From: TVDOG To: TMCDANEL

You have already posted to Usenet, so you know where it is, I should
think. On the off chance that you used one of the post-by-mail sites,
the Usenet groups are over in the Internet SIG. Type "go inter use use".

comp.sys.tandy is the only newsgroup specifically for Tandy computers.
It handles traffic for all Tandy models, PC-compatible and otherwise.
It is considered appropriate to post offers to buy or sell Tandy
equipment there. For PC-(semi)compatible Tandy's, check out the PC
newsgroups as well:
  comp.os.ms-dos.*
  comp.sys.ibm.pc.*
  misc.forsale.computers.pc-clone.*

All 1000-series models can have the RAM upgraded to at least 640k. It's
easier to upgrade some 1000's than others. All models can have expanded
RAM installed as well, though only the 1000RLX and 1000RSX can have
extended RAM.

You can get memory upgrades from Radio Shack, but you don't have to.
There are other sources, such as DCS Industries, Micro Systems, and PC
Enterprises, which may be cheaper.

I have a 1000TL with 640k conventional RAM, 2M expanded. I can run
Word Perfect 5.1 without difficulty.

If you tell us what 1000-series model your friend has, we can give you
more specific information. There are marked differences between the
various models in the 1000 line. Check to find out whether it is an
original 1000, 1000A, 1000EX, 1000HX, 1000HD, 1000AX, 1000SX, 1000TX,
or whatever (there are several more), and get back to us.

completely reformatting the drive?

     T2100 Processor Upgrade
     From: KEVIV To: ALL

Bought a 2100 and have been happy with it up to now. My husband just got
Wing Commander III which needs a 50Mhz processor to run well. Purchased
the new Intel Overdrive Chip only to learn that 2100's have a surface-mount
(non-removable) CPU and no Math Co-processor slot (bummer!). Wondering if
anyone knows if any vendor carries (or Tandy will be releasing in '95) a
(sorry hand slipped on the keyboard). Preferably these should be priced
for less than the cost of just buying a new motherboard and starting over.

You could do a: dir 1: since 1 november

and get a listing of all those since november 1. There really aren't that
many and to catch up rapidly on recent ones you could do a:

     read 1: since 1 december

to get all post since the first of the month brought to your screen.

I would like to install a math c0 in my 4000lx, does anyone one
know if you must have a specific 20mghz 387 ? or will a 33 or 40
clock down ok? My manual shows to put pin 1 in the right front
corner of the socket and the motherboard (1700351 rev c.1) is
silkscreened with pin 1 in the left front corner. The socket is
unmarked and symetrical. What function does jumper E3-E4 serve?

Hi Randy,
I am not very often on this forum. I couldn't help replying to your
post. I now have a Tandy 2100 486SX25 computer on line. I just gave my
grandson a Tandy 1000TX with a tandy monitor. I installed a 20 meg. hard
card in it about four years ago. It is not hard to open the case and put
the card into one of the expansion slots. The folks at DCS Industries will
work with you in any way they can to make things easier for you. Best of
luck with your upgrade. Take care.

Hello Greg,
This is Paul, username "Serapions". I finally got your message about
the CAD program that I'm trying to run in Windows. Thanks much for the
suggestion. It is really a nightmare when "windows" flashes as error
message. There are so many files, and creating a config.sys file is still
hard for me.

Well, I will keep trying and hopefully this semester it will run. The
only way I can use the software now is in the CAd Lab at school. Can you
suggest a good book for learning Dos6.22 and Windows.
                            thanks, Paul serapions

     My color has gone green!!!
     From: CHAZ37 To: ALL

        I got a 1000TX as a hand-me-down a few months ago. I'm using DOS
6.2 and at some point (Shortly after loading the deskmate V1.0 disk that
came with it, text and in most cases (except for CGA) all white colors
are now green and the blue backgrounds in some apps have turned black.
The problem corrects itself every now and then, but only for a few
agonizing moments. I have since downgraded to dos 3.20.22 - the version
included with the computer - and cleaned the motherboard - and installed
a modem and a sound card (it works, but it conflicts with the tandy sound
capabilities at times - another can of worms).
I have tried MODE to no avail.
I dunno what to do - it's really inconvenient when working with
color graphics.
If anyone can help, please do so quickly as I will feel compelled
to mail this trusty dinosaur to the Vatican for a prompt excorcism!!!

One more thing, can anyone describe the functions of the 4-pole DIP switch
block near the power supply?

Thank you,
CHAZ37 (Belvidere, IL.)

I have a Tandy 3000HD with internal 40 meg hard drive. A while back it crashed
and all it did was say "hard disk has no boot sector". After reformating, and
re-installing stuff, it worked just fine...until it did the EXACT same thing
with no warning whatsoever. Is this a sign that my hard drive is probably
going bad? (It's only 9 years old ;-))

Thanks!
