Is it impossible to use a standard IBM compatible keyboard with a Tandy1000?

into the back of the computer, but the keyboard still
will not work? Only Tandy keyboard work on Tandy computers?
Grateful for any advice.

Hello, I have a 1000tl, which is similar to your machine. I've read
that the 286 (8mhz) machines can't manaage a hard drive bigger than 40 meg.
However one of the systems operator at Delpphi told me that you can
employ a 300mb HD if you run Dos 5.
Let me know if your hard drive works! thanks, Serapions

     From: DAIRYLADY To: KENJO

Kenjo,

You *can* use your IDE drive in your TL/2, but you probably need a
different controller, because of the "architecture" of the computer.
Basically, the problem is something like this: IDE drives are usually
16-bit, whereas the TLs are 8-bit. This means you need a special controller
card that makes the conversion from 16-bits to 8-bits, and - you wanted good
news - they do exist, because I have one. It is called the ADP50, made by
Silicon Valley Computer, and sold by DCS Industries (maybe others, but DCS
is where I got mine, and they are Tandy experts). Call them and explain the
what you have and what you want to do. I'm sure you'll end up with the right
combination of stuff *and* the right instructions on how to do it. Their
number is 800-537-3539, located in Athens, OH.

And yes, the TL/2 can use a drive larger than 40 meg. It's just that
Tandy never marketed one larger than 40 for the TLs. If you have DOS 3.3,
you have to partition the drive into several smaller "logical" drives, each
not more than 32 meg, but that's no big deal - at least I don't think so
(I'm sure you'll hear others say it's just terrible). If you use DOS 5 or 6,
you can leave it all as one big drive.

When you get your new hard drive properly installed, you should have your
floppy drives back as A: and B: (if you have two floppies, that is), and C:
as your first hard drive partition, plus however many letters it takes to
name any other partitions. If you have only one floppy drive, it will be A:
and there won't be any B: drive. The hard drive will start at C:

Happy New Year! and Happy Computing!

                                            Sue

I have a Tandy 1000 SL (very similar to the TL/2). I have connected it to a
friend's computer via a null modem cable (from RS), and all works well. The
way we transfered some files was using standard communications software (like
what you use to connect to Delphi). Set up your program on the TL/2 with the
COM port set up for COM1 (or whatever it is). Your best bet is to use a
communications program on the TL/2 that has a host mode so you can use the 486
to control what you download from the TL/2. Then set up the 486 with the COM
port that the null modem cable is connected to, and then set up both programs
to the same speed (the faster the better), and the same parity, etc. Then
access the TL/2 through the 486 as though the TL/2 was at the other end of the
phone line. This should work. Just make sure the cable is a null modem cable
and not a standard DB-9 cable (Mine is a standard cable with a null modem
adapter connected to one end). Good Luck!

Just a guess, but it appears the Longshine card you have should work if you
jumper it for secondary floppy and set the ROM address to an unused area.
Offhand, a ROM address anywhere in the D000 to E800 range should work.

Check the keyboard to make sure you've flipped the switch from AT to XT. I
suspect the keyboard defaults to AT mode, which won't work, so flip that switch.

The keyboard that comes with the RL, by the way, is an autoswitching XT/AT
keyboard that will work on most clones if you have the right adapter.

I am using DeskMate 3.69 and tried to install the Outliner companion program.
The manual says the program must be installed through the Desktop menu. I've
tried that method as well as selecting its INSTALL.PDM from the Files view

few seconds and I'm returned to the Desktop or Files view, whatever was on
screen last. I have installed another program (Macros) through its installer
and that worked OK.

The system is a 2500SX/25. I install DM apps as well as DM itself under DR-

I only paid $1 for Outliner but it looks like a program I can really use. Any

     HELP!
     From: WESF To: ALL

Help! I have a Tandy 1000 SL. About 2 years ago, I pruchased a memory upgrade
for my computer. About 2 days after I got it, one of the chips went bad. The
company sent me a replacement chip (which later went bad, and turned out to be
a different speed than the rest). After that chip went bad, the company did
not have a proper speed replacement chip, so they sent me a whole new set.
My problem now is, that I am constantly getting an error message on boot-up
of the computer. Sometimes, resetting the computer or turning it off and back
on again will solve the problem, but the solution that always works is to open
the case, touch each one of the chips firmly, and all is well. At least until
it happens again. My best guess is that the sockets have loosened enough to
cause a connection problem. If this is or is not the case, can you give me any
suggestion as to what will solve my problem? It is a real nuisance to have to
take off the computer cover just to get the computer going. Sometimes, it will
crash during operation, requiring a reboot. If you could suggest a remedy, I
would be most greatful.

Power Basic offers very nearly everything found in QuickBASIC and the BASIC
Professional Development System (PDS) plus much more. The main thing you
don't get is an overlay manager and the ability to compile to p-code.

Here are just a few things you gain. 1) You can perform a true compile to
memory, and the program will behave exactly as it would as a .EXE. 2) New
data types including floating point BCD which eliminates round-off errors once
and for all. 3) Inline assembler. 4) All programs will use a x87 chip if
present or will emmulate a x87. 5) Unions, like those used in C. 6) Tools for
writing TSR's. 7) Many new keywords. 8) Extend the Power Basic help system
using your own text. 9) Optimized array sorting -- no need to write your own
algorithm. 10) Each string variable can be 32Kb long. 11) The IDE will use EMS
or XMS if present. 12) Flex strings whose length can be determined at runtime.
13) Other new data types include byte, word, double word, long integer, quad
integer. 14) Compiler directive optimizes for size or speed. 15) Compiler
directive to generate 286 or 386-specific code. 16) Bug fixes from Power Basic
Inc.

Still interested? I think I recall seeing a demo copy in the PC SIG.

Found a key combination ALT+SHIFT+CTRL+F that makes the machine reboot, and it
then shows BOOT FAILURE. Maybe this is it. Took his MS-DOS disk, stuck it in

Ok, I give up, how do I get this thing to boot from a floppy?

Did you find the PB demo?

As I was reading the Power Basic manuals after getting the language (a year
ago today), about every two or three pages I'd say "I can actually do ____
now?!" And PB gave me the push I needed to really begin understanding ASM,
something I had only dreamed of foreleven years; my first ASM program soon
followed.

I've only encountered two major problems. One is with the statement that
gives you a string constant of the specified width equal to the binary
representation of the byte you give it. Give it $FF and out comes "11111111".
That's fine. Put in $00 and get back "0", but I (usually) want "00000000". I
am using a function to rather clumsily get around this. The other is that I
put a lot of effort into customizing the colors in v3.00a and the color config
file was ignored by the 3.00c upgrade (I never got 3.00b). So far I have yet
to expend the effort to do it all again. The other config file did carry up
to the upgrade.

Another problem I frequently run into and cannot solve is dealing with 80x28
text screens (the mode I usually work in). The conspirators are the compiler,
my code, the VGA font loader, the ROM, and DOS. I just don't know what role
each one plays, if any. It's not PB alone because I have these problems with
other programs, but more severely with ones I write.

But overall I am a happy camper (g)

To steer a bit back toward the topic of this thread, I'm getting CA-Realizer
and will soon be able to add OS/2 and Windows versions to the DOS versions of
programs I write under Power Basic. About all that's left is DeskMate....

I think I can do better than $299.99 for an Intel chip. I guess I'm wondering
about compatibility between parts. Thanks.

I wish it was an expansion board, but it is not. It is on the Motherboard,
somewhere in the upper range between 512 and 640K range of memory. Any ideas
as to what I can do to maybe try to enhance the connection between the sockets
and the chips? That's my only thought as to what I could do.

Thanks for your suggestion,

From what you have told us, I *think* that you have a bad solder connection
on one of the RAM socket pins. If you know how to solder, using a low-wattage
soldering iron (not a soldering gun), you can "re-melt" the existing solder
around the
socket pins on the back of the board. Be sure to remove the RAM chips first.

I'm not too fimiliar with soldering, and I wouldn't be ready to try to do
that on my computer's motherboard. Any other suggestions? Anyone?

You could try placing something (non-conductive; wood, paper) under the
area. This *may* push the pin contact point to the trace pad. I don't hold
out much hope for this, though -- soldering is the answer.

Where do you mean for me to place it? I don't understand where you mean.
Do you mean under the socket, or where? Sorry, I don't understand.

Under the board near the socket.

     New Tandy 2100 User
     From: JGOBLE To: ALL

Hi. I've just started using a Tandy 2100----Windows 3.1, MS-DOS 6.0 and
all that good stuff. Have had two problems that I don't understand how
to resolve.

First, I'm using a DMP-133 printer. I've tried both IBM Graphics and IBM
Proprinter drivers, but I still get unwanted linefeeds
sometimes half a page or so---with no apparent prompt. If anyone could advise
how to stop this, I'd appreciate it.

Second, mycommunication software is Windows Terminal. I've been able to
download binary files, but not text files. I'm also not clear as to how
to print out buffer contents, or whether that's even possible.

When trying to download, I've hit "Receive Text File" and entered the
filename in the dialogue box, but nothing happens.

Any ideas, anyone?

Check your DMP-133 manual. Flipping one of the DIP switches might solve
the unwanted linefeeds problem.

Jim,

I dug out the manual for my old DMP-130A. Maybe the DIP switches and their
functions. Here's hoping anyway. It's worth a try.

Here's what my manual says for switches two and three:

   Sw. Symbol ON OFF
   --- ------ -- ---
2 CR Carriage Return Only Carriage Return And
                        (CR=CR) Line Feed (CR=NL)

3 LF Line Feed and Carriage Line Feed Only
                        Return (LF=NL) (LF=LF)

Hope this helps.

Sorry to be so long getting back to you. I've been learning how to be a

find it. Who would have thought to look in NEW ARRIVALS. :) I haven't had a
chance to look at it but I hope to soon. Thanks for your interest.

Hi Jim -

I'm running a DMP-132 which may have similar dip switches to your 133. I can
give you the information as it pertains to the 132.

There are 8 switches in this order:

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

Any switch that is up is considered "on".

#1 determines printer codes Off is Tandy codes, On is IBM codes
#2 determines cr & lf Off = cr & lf, On = cr only
#3 determines lf & cr Off = lf only, On = lf & cr
#4 determines form length Off = 11", On = 12"
#5 determines perforation skip Off is not valid, On = valid perforation
#6 determines line spacing Off = 1/6", On = 1/8"
#7 in Tandy mode Off = Tandy character set, On = IBM character set
in IBM mode Off = IBM character set 2, On = IBM character set 1
#8 in Tandy mode Off = dp mode, On = wp mode
in IBM mode Off = cr & lf when buffer full, On = cr only when buffer full

There's also another set of 2 switches but these are just used for
determining whether the printer is parallel or serial and you shouldn't have
to use them. I hope this helps.

I own a 1400FD which I should have never bought. I should have bought the HD
but I need it to have a hard drive. In the past I called Merrymac, the vendor
who sold me the unit and was told that they couldn't provide me with a hard
drive. Does anyone kno
w where I could find a hard drive for this unit and what i could expect to pay
for it. Any help or leads you could give would be greatly appreciated.
